Footnote Out of Sequence

2009-02-02 Thread Christopher Seal
Jim,

I had an instance where I had to replicate a published report, and that
report had Tables with footnotes as part of the regular footnote sequence.
In FM this was not possible so I faked it as follows. I created a real
footnote in the anchor paragraph for the table, and coloured the in-text
footnote number white so it wouldn't show. Then I added a superscript number
(same as the footnote number) in the table to make the reader think this was
the real reference.

Automating the import of multi-page PDFs

2009-01-26 Thread Christopher Seal
A project requires that FM is used to publish a collection of reports that
were created in WordPerfect. The reports in the collection must look like
the original reports - this is a condition.

I can either copy text from the WordPerfect file and paste into the FM
document (then format), or I can import sequential pages from the PDF
version of each report.

The report collection will be published as PDF.

As there are hundreds of PDF pages to be imported (if I go that route), I
was wondering if there is an automated method of doing this. Any suggestions
would be welcome.

I am using FM7.2/WP11

OT: capturing graphical user interfaces on LCD panels

2010-05-06 Thread Christopher Seal

When writing user guides for PC or Mac software applications I can capture
screen shots with no problem.

I have to write user guides for stand-alone terminals that use a pair of
Samsung 4.8-in LCD 1024x600 panels p/n LMS480JC01 for their MMI.

Any suggestions on how to capture the user interface?

Some thoughts:

Photography? cannot because cameras are forbidden where I work.

Redraw in Visio? Lots of screens, would take a long time.

Add-on device, like a box with an input connector that can be clipped on to the
LCD connector, a USB output to a computer, and a software application. I've
done lots of searching and haven't found such as beast.

Making PDF of a FrameMaker document that contains PDF graphics

2008-12-05 Thread Christopher Seal
FrameMaker 7.2
Windows XP Pro

I have a FrameMaker document that incorporates PDF graphics within anchored
frames. When trying to make a PDF of this document the process stops once
the first PDF page is encountered.

What do I need to do to create a PDF from a FrameMaker document that
contains referenced PDF pages? The document displays OK and prints OK.

BTW. The referenced PDFs are a sequence of pages from a PDF document. They
are inserted by reference.

Making PDF of a FrameMaker document that contains PDF graphics

2008-12-05 Thread Christopher Seal
Thank you to those who responded.

I found there is a problem with one of the PDF pages. The error message I
got was:
-
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[Page: 1]%%
%%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: definefont; ErrorInfo: .notdef
--nostringval-- ]%%

Stack:
/Font
-dict-
/Garamond-BookCondensedItalic

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

Now I have to find out how to fix this issue in the PDF.

Finding a font

2008-12-08 Thread Christopher Seal
FM7.2
WinXPPro

A 700-page document I've been given indicates in the console that the

How do I find where in the book (22 components) where Times is specified?

The Find>Character Format... does not list Times as a Family to search for
(of course).

Section TOCs

2008-11-13 Thread Christopher Seal
As the question relates to a document with continuous numbering I think that
the overall book should be updated first in order to get the page numbers
correct. Then the section TOCs can be updated. If a section is done first
how can it take into account page count changes in front of it?

Section TOCs

2008-11-13 Thread Christopher Seal
However, as the originator wants to have an overall TOC as well as section
TOCs, surely the parent book would have to be updated to make the overall
TOC correct?

I am in a similar situation, but trying to fix a document made by another.
In my case the section TOCs are created and inserted into a section page by
reference. The section TOC does not form a component of any book.

Footnote placement

FrameMaker 7.2 on WinXP

A document I am working on has many footnotes.

Sometimes a footnote reference in text is on one page but the footnote is on

If not OK, how do I get FrameMaker to ensure the footnote is on the same

missing menu items in Acrobat X Pro

2011-06-20 Thread Christopher Seal

Jon,

I had a similar problem recently.

A PDF that was from a scanned document opened but I had no major tools
available and the following message was displayed beneath the toolbar:
'You are viewing this document in PDF/A mode.'

When I changed my viewing mode (Edit > Preferences > Documents > PDF/A View
Mode > View documents in PDF/A mode: never) I got all my tools back.

Regards...Chris

Everyone,

I?m using Acrobat X Pro (not the reader) to view PDFs. I want to enable
document rights. I have instructions that tell me that I to go to the Comments
or Advanced menu to do so. There is no Advanced item on the main menu. On
further investigation, I find that my main menu is missing several items:
Document, Comments, Forms, Tools, Advanced.

However, I do have File, Edit, View, Window, Help.

How do I get all the menu items in Acrobat X Pro to appear in Adobe Acrobat
Pro?

OT: Scary responsibility in job ad

2011-10-06 Thread Christopher Seal

The real danger, and I'm writing from experience, is that once the engineers
get the skills and tools to create documents the writers could be let go.

In that type of firm, the engineer's customer-facing documents would then be
reviewed for format and style by the in-house editor, whose main job is the
CEO's assistant.

RE: What free Windows text editor should I use to look at MIF files?

2014-10-06 Thread Christopher Seal
I have to say that I do not remember seeing in this discussion that in the
context of FrameMaker MIF stands for Maker Interchange Format (i.e. Maker, not
Model).
When I used FrameMaker (last time was with 7.2) I used MIF to clean FM files,
and also for FUN! For example, by editing MIF files (which are/were pure ascii
text) in MSWord (Yes I did), I could cause formatting changes that could not be
done through the FM menus (and were likely not supported).

Re: Section TOCs

2008-11-13 Thread Christopher Seal
As the question relates to a document with continuous numbering I think that
the overall book should be updated first in order to get the page numbers
correct. Then the section TOCs can be updated. If a section is done first
how can it take into account page count changes in front of it?

Create small additional books containing the component files for each
section.

Set up your section TOC and generate it.

In your parent book, add the section TOC in the appropriate spot.

When you update, remember that you have to update the section
"booklets" first so the TOC will be accurate.
You could automate this with FrameScript if you have it.

Good question.

The numbering properties in the Section books need to be set to use
the existing value in the component files, a value that is set by the
parent book. But the parent book doesn't require an update action
because the page / figure / table numbers are dynamic in the component
files. The parent book would only require an update to refresh chapter
/ volume numbers if files are added or deleted.

If not OK, how do I get FrameMaker to ensure the footnote is on the same

Thank you to those who responded.

I found there is a problem with one of the PDF pages. The error message I

RE: Making PDF of a FrameMaker document that contains PDF graphics

2008-12-05 Thread Christopher Seal
My work around is to type the offending page in FrameMaker and use available
fonts.

The other PDF pages are OK.

Finding a font

2008-12-08 Thread Christopher Seal
FM7.2
WinXPPro

A 700-page document I've been given indicates in the console that the
'Times' font is not available.

How do I find where in the book (22 components) where Times is specified?

The Find>Character Format... does not list Times as a Family to search for
(of course).

Regards...Chris

RE: Footnote Out of Sequence

2009-02-02 Thread Christopher Seal
Jim,

I had an instance where I had to replicate a published report, and that
report had Tables with footnotes as part of the regular footnote sequence.
In FM this was not possible so I faked it as follows. I created a real
footnote in the anchor paragraph for the table, and coloured the in-text
footnote number white so it wouldn't show. Then I added a superscript number
(same as the footnote number) in the table to make the reader think this was
the real reference.
