PowerPoint to Framemaker

2011-10-07 Thread Flato, Gillian
Anyone know a utility for converting PowerPoint slides with lots of graphics to
FrameMaker, or something that can be imported into Frame?

RE: Conditional build question

2011-09-22 Thread Flato, Gillian
Sharon,

I never used Frame 9, but in Frame 10, if you select all of the files in the
book, and then build the conditional text settings, they set for the book
level. If you build the expression on a chapter level, it's only for the
chapter.

I'm in Frame 9, fully patched.

I have a set of client files for 4 books. Some of the chapters are used in 3 or
4 of the books. There is extensive use of conditions in all books to get the
right output.

I want to use build expressions in each book to select the several include and
exclude conditions each book needs. So here's the question: If I set a
combination of conditions for all the files in Book1, is this build expression
applied at the book level or at the chapter level?

If I apply a slightly different set of conditions to all the files in Book2,
which has some of the files from Book1, what happens to the common files? What
build expression set of conditions is applied when I generate each book?

I am fairly new to conditional text. Is this possible, or am I barking up the

Import PDF Comments doesn't seem to work

2011-08-17 Thread Flato, Gillian
I did a shared review with Acrobat 10. When I open up the review file, I see
all of the SME's comments. However, when I go to Frame and select Import PDF

Any suggestions?

Format Document Text Options

Clear the Smart Spaces checkbox, and you'll be able to add all the

We are on Frame 9 and ran into this. We observed that if you undock the
Add/Edit Variable dialog and have it float somewhere else on the desktop, you
can edit the variable. Otherwise that dialog remains unresponsive.

Hope the same workaround applies to Frame 10. Good luck!

I've looked in the Adobe FM PDF and can't find the keyboard shortcuts I'm

Is there a way to select multiple Condition tags and apply them in one step?

And after you've selected and applied the set of multiple Condition tags once,
is there a keyboard shortcut for repeat Condition tags (as Esc jj repeats
the application of the last Paragraph tag)?

I have had to add a new Condition to my books which requires me to
conditionalize a lot of text (and table insets) that were not previously marked
with any Conditions. Needless to say, having to apply the same five Conditions
over and over is time consuming and beyond tedious.

We just installed the Technical Communication Suite 3, which took me from Frame
8 to 10 and simultaneously from Acrobat Pro 9 to 10.

I updated my document templates and tried to create a PDF, but most of the body
text was replaced by a swirly symbol I have never seen before... Some of the
headings did print, but not in the correct font (Arial Narrow shows up as
something like Times).

We've checked fonts and various settings and preferences and cannot make it
work!! Has anyone else had this problem?
Any suggestions are welcome!

Subject: Converting Word doc to Frame.

I know I've seen this on the board before, but I can't find it.

I'm using Frame 9 on XP.

I'm moving some big docs from Word to Frame. I did all the preparation from
word2frame.pdf, but that doc never says how to actually import the Word doc
into the file with the Frame template I've prepared.

When I do bring the Word file over, everything marked Normal stays Normal. When
I do a global update from Normal to Body, all the 'Normal' text becomes
'*Body', but the font does not change to what I have for Body. Then I have to
go through one paragraph at a time and assign Default Font. So what's the point
of Global Update?

Help?

Hi Framers,

Has anyone taken a gander at this product/service yet? I'm occasionally plagued
by co-workers who want editable Word versions of docs I create in Frame. The
Frame export to RTF leaves a whole lot to be desired and I'm wondering if this
new thing will produce a better formatted RTF file. Anyone know what the
limitations are? Does it choke on master pages and graphics?

Needless to say, the FAQs on the Adobe site aren't the questions I'd be
asking.

Thanks.

Mmmm, proverbs and quotes, I love them. Though I have to say, my version of the
tech writer's proverb is:

Ce que l'on conçoit bien s'énonce clairement,
Et les mots pour le dire arrivent aisément.

That which is well conceived is clearly said,

Both are very appropriate indeed! I'm going to post them next to these two:

If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer you that there must be time. Let
it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripe n." -Epictetus, Discourses

Mmmm, proverbs and quotes, I love them. Though I have to say, my version of the
tech writer's proverb is:

"Ce que l'on con?oit bien s'?nonce clairement,
Et les mots pour le dire arrivent ais?ment."

"That which is well conceived is clearly said,
And the words to say it flow with ease."

RE: OFF-TOPIC: PC BIOS Screen Capture Software

Thanks Andy. I think looking for the MFTR docs and cribbing screenshots is
probably the best way to go. I did that with VMWare ESXi which installs in a
DOS/BIOS type atmosphere. I found a PowerPoint presentation on VMWare's website

Sounds like Bill had the only workable answer so far (in yesterday's digest),
taking the video out of the machine into another one.

I wondered if you had any sort of BIOS emulator, or even just BIOS mockup, for
your specific BIOS. Of course, BIOS emulators are used for hacking, so
searching for one and trusting to run one on your computer is far from simple.
Maybe contact the BIOS manufacturer (or look in their docs for images you can
crib).

The only other thought I had was to recreate the BIOS screen, which should just
be a lot of ASCII characters of different colors, but that might be difficult
if you have lots of different screens.

RE: Frame Light, what's the potential market?

2011-02-22 Thread Flato, Gillian
It will never happen.

Adobe's solution is for you to give someone an edible PDF and have them comment
in the PDF in sticky notes or mark the PDF using the advanced text editor
tools. Then, with Acro 10, you can import their comments and changes into Frame
and then accept or reject them through track changes and conditions.

I, too, have wished for the capability for more than 10 years and have
requested it numerous times from Adobe. This would be one way to bring back
the Mac version--add FrameMaker lite to the App store. I think a price point
of $99 or less would be great. There are too many of our clients that end up
porting their documents back and forth from Word to FrameMaker. This is due
to licensing costs, training, and Word just has better (and more easily used)
functions for tracking and editing changes.

I think it was a mistake for FrameMaker 10 not to include ePub output directly
from FrameMaker. I can output an ePub straight from InDesign or straight from
Apple Pages, but I need the full TCS3 to output ePub through RoboHelp.

Here's hoping for a FrameMaker lite...

business case for 'Frame Light' which could be used by SMEs to create and review
content, but little else.

I work in an environment where I am the only Frame user (experimenting with 10
at the moment) in an organisation with over 100 SMEs producing content in Word.
Most do their own thing, or come to me to 'fix' or standardise stuff once it is
collected together.

So, I would want 'Frame Light' to allow content creation in structured or
unstructured format (including DITA one day), but that requires the content
provider to use only the pre-determined paragraph formats and a few text styles
(emphasis, bold, sub- and superscript); and insert images by reference. I can
get around a need to define conditional text by using different paragraph format
names. All this in templates that can only be developed or altered by full
license holders.

To support the development of a business case can you post what (other)
functionality you would want Frame Light to have, how many licenses you would
(ideally) want in your organisation, how many full Frame licenses you currently
have (for comparison purposes), how you would want FL delivered (local install,
web-based, floating licenses), and what you would want/need to pay for it to get
it accepted as an alternative to Whatever word processing your SMEs currently
use?

Creating more disciplined (structured), reusable, content which can be output
with a similar look and feel, and doesn't reinvent a wheel each time an SME puts
fingers to keyboard, is a concept which has almost reached its time in my
organisation. Others may be close, or even ahead, so there must be demand for
this. Please let me know.

Off-Topic: Acrobat Shared Review

2010-12-01 Thread Flato, Gillian
Have any of you EVER been able to get Acrobat shared review feature to work?

Every time I get to the screen entitled, Decide How to Send the PDF File, I
select my shared file, (which I make sure has permissions set to Everyone and
is on a network drive) and then click Next. I always get the error message,
The file destination provided is not valid. Enter a valid file location.

I've tried it with a local drive in a publically shared folder with permissions
set to Everyone. Same error message. Also tried repairing Acrobat. No help,
same error message. Does it even work at all? Has anyone ever had it to work or
is it totally bogus?

Richard,

I am using Acrobat 8 and Frame 8. If Acrobat 8 requires a Server application,

What version of Acrobat are you using? The last time I looked at shared
(server-based) reviews, it required a special Acrobat server application (I
think this was Acrobat 7; maybe 8). With Acro 9, that no longer seems to be
necessary, but I'm OK with emailing comment-enabled PDFs to my few reviewers (I
don't really need them to see each others' comments).

In Acro 9, there's supposed to be a wizard to help you set this up. Knowing
Adobe, the problem may be that they're not clear in explaining/describing what
you need to do. But take a look at this:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WS53DFBF0D-427E-46d1-829C-BBAED285F67D.w.html

And the topics that follow, like this:

It sure sounds like all you need is a network folder. But it's not clear if the
PDF you want to share should be in that network folder as you step through the
process or not.

Of course, if you're using an older version of Acrobat...

Hi all,

At the tekom conference this past week RJ Jacquez of Adobe was providing some
sneak peeks at the officially titled FrameMaker 10.

While I can't say much about specifics that were on display there are updates
to DITA, a lot of greater interface enhancements, and even a menu item titled
S1000D in the application.

More to follow as we begin to get official approval on what can be said by the

For more information on this, please keep an eye on RJ's Twitter account

Hi all,

I have placed my FrameMaker documentation in a subversion repository. I use
tortoise svn for my SVN client. Its working great. The one major draw back
is the inability to do binary diffs -- or so I thought. According to my sys
admin, SVN always does binary diffs but relies on the client to figure out
whats different and how to merge it. TortoiseSVN has a dialog box where you
can tell it to use external diff program for different file types. If any
diff programs exist for FrameMaker, I might be able to plug it in and use
it. There are example scripts that do it for Word documents using Word’s
built in doffing functionality.

So what say you all? Does such a thing exist? Please note that in this case,
if a custom solution could be developed, I would definitely consider
purchasing it.

Sincerely,

Joseph Lorenzini

Subject: SVN Diffs in FrameMaker

If any
diff programs exist for FrameMaker, I might be able to plug it in and use
it. There are example scripts that do it for Word documents using Word?s
built in doffing functionality.

Date: Thursday, October 28, 2010, 10:03 AM Hi group

Can someone please explain to me why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard (Full,
   no
   update) costs:

  - US $299 (216 EUR) when I buy it in the US Store
  http://bit.ly/aXhtLv
  - US $554 (401 EUR) when I buy it in a European Adobe Store
  - http://bit.ly/dtOSd3

I called Customer Support in Belgium and the explanation they gave me
was that the price in the US is lower because they don't have offer
free support. But I don't need support!

When I go to the Adobe store, a pop-up appears, telling me that I can
have a live text chat with an Adobe Product Specialist to assiste me
with my product selection. This is the result:

Please hold as we route your chat to an Adobe Representative.
Welcome to Adobe.com! My name is Darryl. May I assist you with your
   selection today?
Darryl: Hello, how can I help you?
Yves: I'd like to know why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard costs
   $299 in the US
Store and $554 in the Belgian Adobe Store? What's the reason for this
   HUGE difference in price?
Darryl: We understand your concern. We want to make sure that we are
giving our Customers the best products and at the right price.
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing
like 'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference
in the perceived value of the product'.
Darryl: What are some of the tasks you like to accomplish using the
   software?
Yves: Not relevant here: product is the same, price is different. Why?
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing
like 'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference
in the perceived value of the product'.

   Huh?

Hi all,

I use FM9 p255 under Windows XP

On accessing the Conditional Format pod by menu
or by clicking the pod, FM crashes...

Today, at least 3 times!

Anyone else out there have the same problem?

Thx...I am not used to this! Just hired new tech
writer - told her FM was stable...

Also note that the tricky bit with multiple people really isn't a problem,
either, because the checked-out files you will be working with will typically
be on your local drive rather than a network drive where other people could
potentially be trying to use them simultaneously. And even if the multiple
writers *do* for some reason keep their working directories on a network drive,
each user will typically have *their own* working directory (their own set of
checked-out copies) since that is how CMS systems are generally designed to be
used. (The whole point of using a system like SVN for software development is
to allow multiple developers to work independently on the same code base and
resolve the differences at a later point in the development process.) So
because there is no issue of multiple users sharing the *same* set of working
files, there is still no need for the rudimentary Network File Locking scheme
that FrameMaker provides.

RE: FM8 crashing upon showing all conditions.

2010-08-05 Thread Flato, Gillian
I had that problem a few months ago. Check the directory where the files are
kept. Delete all of the lock files.
Before viewing all of the conditions, update your book. Delete any lock (*.lck)
files, than view the conditions. That worked for me.

Subject: FM8 crashing upon showing all conditions.

Hello Everybody,
I'm really at a loss here.
I'm hoping someone can help.

I have a file (actually a few), which when I try to show all conditions crashes
the entire FM book. It also crashes when I open the file on its own and try to
show all conditions.
This usually happens with files that have a visio object embedded.
Or with my Revision History file which may have old revisions with x-refs that
are no longer relevant.

Apart from driving me crazy, I'm having incredible trouble (trouble's not the
word, I can't create PDFs this way) creating PDFs this way. My only alternative
is to send the corrupted file to a co-worker, have them open the file and then
save it with all conditions showing. (MIF wash does not help).

Any other ideas?
And yes, I've installed the Windows Hotfix - my IT fellow is at a loss too.

I'm running FM 8.277 from the
Adobe Technical Suite

On a Laptop with:
XP 2002 SP2
Intel Core2 CPU

And unless the files are in a network directory (a situation that has its own
set of gotchas) so that other users can potentially be using some of the same

generating all thoise *.lck files in the first place. Go to
FilePreferencesGeneral and de-select the Network File Locking option. The
primitive lock file mechanism provides such minimal protection in a shared
directory working environment that IMO it isn't worth the hassle of having to
clean up the left-over lock files if/when FrameMaker unexpectedly exits or
has to quit, which seemingly happens fairly frequently when you are working
on files that reside on a network drive.

1.83 GHz, 2.00GB RAM

That can't be right. Telling Users to enter or type text is probably the

In Simplified Technical English, which has a strictly limited vocabulary

few minutes and can't think of a STE legal way to write the requested
instructions.

RE: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-21 Thread Flato, Gillian
Frame doesn't crash though. What happens though is that the next time I go to
save the file, Frame tells me it can't save the file because the file has a
strange suffix.

Thank you,

Do you also see .recover files?

Seems like those are the result of Frame crashes.

Frame 8 bug

2010-05-19 Thread Flato, Gillian
I am using Frame 8p277 XP version

Many times when I have a book file open, I change my conditions globally, and
then update my book. Randomly, Frame seems to create *.lck files, and these lck
files cause Frame to crash. Anyone know a solution to this problem?

Thank you,

RE: Frame 8 bug

2010-05-19 Thread Flato, Gillian
I believe that when you update your book file, if lck files exist for chapter
files, Frame crashes. There should only be an lck file for the book file, not
the individual fm files within the book. I only have the book file open and am
trying to set the conditions for it, yet all these lck files from the frame
chapter files keep opening and then Frame gets the dreaded Internal Error bug
and crashes.

Thank you,

The .lck file is created *every* time any file - book or .fm - is opened by
FrameMaker.

This is to prevent multiple simultaneous opens of the same file from different
sessions of FrameMaker (local or on the network) by you or others.

They should not *normally* cause FrameMaker to crash ... just prevent the file
from being opened again.

Are you using these files on a network? If so, it is possible that they get
left behind inadvertently when the file is closed and appear to cause problems.

Generally speaking, if you know that you are the only person opening the file,
you can delete the .lck files and proceed without concern.

Or ... am I misinterpreting what you mean by cause Frame to crash?

RE: Frame 8 bug

2010-05-19 Thread Flato, Gillian
Actually, the bug is now happening when I click View Show/Hide conditional
text on the book level. And when I look in Explorer, two lck files are there
for chapter files which are not open.
