Hi Craig,

I'm not sure whether the problem started with the listserv software
or if it was caused by the post including too much text from the
previous message. It may also have been caused by how the recipient's
email client styled the original text.

I will keep an eye on it and hope that it is a brief burp. In the
meantime, the list rules are here and I'd encourage subscribers to
review them. This is a great group with very few problems but it
never hurts to remind folks that this is a listserv and not regular email.

[Framers] ALERT: MESSAGES FROM poshe...@bellsouth.net ARE HACKED

2020-10-05 Thread FrameUsers Admin
Framers, it looks like one of our member's email account has been
hacked. You may receive messages from poshe...@bellsouth.net directly
to your inbox rather than via this Framers listserv. Please do not
click the link in the message (it purportedly goes to a Dropbox
document). I will contact Ken to see what is going on, but in the

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person Was: Framers Digest, Vol 171, Issue 8

2020-06-18 Thread FrameUsers Admin
Before continuing this thread, please make sure to replace the
Subject "[Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 171, Issue 8" with Subject "FM
on Next - question from a nostalgic person" so that the thread
archives correctly and responses can be searched for.

When replying to messages, digest users should be careful to trim the
digest to just a sentence or two and to change the subject.

Thanks.

Indeed!

I still receive this list because I am (a) a relatively early
FrameMaker user - started in 1988 on a Sun 3/50, so nostalgia
applies to me, and (b) still occasionally fire up version FM 12 to
make *small* changes to existing older FM documents.

Otherwise, due to the high cost of "upgrading" FM decision by Adobe
form FM 15 onwards, I moved away from their tools some time back.

Now, the last one is Acrobat Pro and I am trying other PDF tools to
evaluate them as functional replacements - so far, the SoftMaker PDF
tool appears to be working pretty well for my needs.

My choices - and this will NOT necessarily be applicable to others
for their documents, of course! - was to switch to LaTeX markup for
all *my* specification documents (using a very nice editor for
relatively instant and easy check of the PDF output), and various
Magix/Xara tools for image editing, video editing, and brochures.
The Magix/Xara tools are not free, but very low-cost, and much less
expensive than Adobe ... including upgrades.

I am happy with those decisions ... indeed, the experience has made
me look for other lower-cost products too. So, I am also evaluating
SoftMaker Office as an alternative to Microsoft tools that I still
use (for presentation and spreadsheets for example).

Hi Rick,

No, you did absolutely nothing wrong. Remember that many, many of
this list's subscribers have been affected by coronavirus-related
work disruptions. They may not be reading list messages as regularly
as they had been. Of the ones that are, they perhaps have no solution to offer.

One of the things you can do is search this group's archives at

You might be able to unearth some helpful information in previous posts.

[Framers] Replying to digest messages

2019-06-20 Thread FrameUsers Admin

Framers,

For those who subscribe to the listserv via digest mode, it is so
easy to forget to change the digest's default Subject line when
replying to a message. For instance, yesterday, a digest subscriber
replied to a message in the thread "Mystery Tags in HTML Mapping
Table" but forgot to change the default Subject line "Framers Digest,
Vol 159, Issue 11." And a response to her message today perpetuated
the oversight. These two messages are now unfortunately totally
detached from the thread in the archived messages
(https://www.mail-archive.com/framers@lists.frameusers.com/index.html),
making it really difficult for anyone who wants to search for all
replies to the original message.

I urge everyone to check the subject line of the message they are
sending to ensure that it contains the appropriate subject and not
the default digest subject line.

Framers,

I wanted to apologize to the members of this Listserv for yesterday's
email containing profanity. The listserv member who wrote the email
has been censured and put on moderated status with the promise that
if it happens again, he will be unsubscribed. Our Framers Listserv
has, for years, maintained a tone of civility, even when members
disagree with each other. His language was offensive and in violation
of the List Rules (http://www.frameusers.com/community/).

I appreciate everyone's help to prevent this thread from going any
further. It is certainly permissible to discuss pros and cons of
products that we use as adjuncts to Framemaker. It is not acceptable
to flame, profane, or attack any list member. If you have any
questions or further comments, please email me or Rick Quatro off-list.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled, civil, and helpful Framers Listserv.

[Framers] Please trim your posts

2018-02-26 Thread FrameUsers Admin
Folks, we are getting a lot of posts that contain the entire content
of a previous digest or the total content of the message being
responded to. That is poor list etiquette.

When you reply to a message, trim out everything that isn't necessary
to give readers enough context to understand what you're talking
about. Headers, footers, and the bulk of the message should go away.

If you are on digest, in addition to trimming, you absolutely MUST
change the Subject line from "Framers Digest, Vol 583, Issue 8" to a
relevant subject. This ensures correct message threading in the
archives. And it keeps me from getting cranky.

We have 945 subscribers that depend on this list for expert help with
Framemaker. Help us all save time reading messages by thoughtfully
trimming your replies.

[Framers] RESULTS: Up for discussion: changing Framers' default Reply-To behavior

2017-02-03 Thread FrameUsers Admin
During the last week, I've gotten good responses, both on-list and
off-list, to my request for comments about changing Framers' default
Reply-To behavior from Reply to Poster to Reply to List. Thank you
all so much for being involved in this decision.

By a majority of two to one, respondents would rather have messages
automatically reply to list.

Therefore, I plan to change the default reply-to setting for this
group to Reply to List. I will initiate this change on FEBRUARY 12
and we'll see how it goes. Hopefully no one is emailing content that
they'd be embarrassed by, regardless of who receives it. Slow down
and don't be so quick to hit Send. Anytime you're sending an email of
substance, take a minute to make sure that it says what you want it
to and that it's addressed to the person or group you want to read
it. In a world of instant communication, old-fashioned proofreading
is the most powerful weapon you have against embarrassing emails.

And please don't be put off by the idea of sharing your email with
the entire group. This is an extremely friendly bunch of people who
do not bash posters they disagree with. We have very informative
discussions on the pros and cons of a lot of ideas and solutions.

I'm excited at the idea of having more posts shared with the group
that were previously, either intentionally or accidentally, sent only
to the original poster. After all, the purpose of this group is to
share information.

[Framers] Up for discussion: changing Framers' default Reply-To behavior

2017-01-26 Thread FrameUsers Admin
In the "old days" of this list, it was expected that a poster would
summarize the comments received, especially any that were sent
off-list. These days, most of us don't have time for that and we miss
so much good information that could help us all. I know that often
someone posts something that I want to watch for replies, only to
never read another word on the subject except a mention of all the
great off-list replies.

Related to this is what I find to be a major pain in the a**--
pressing Ctrl-R and forgetting that my reply will go only to the
original poster. I have to then find the Framers email address,
copy/paste it into the header or a new email, and resend the message.
I think this may be contributing to the propensity of off-list replies.

When I originally set up this new Framers list, I opted to set the
default Reply-To behavior to send only to the poster and not the list
because it was the recommended action for new lists. I'm beginning to
really regret that decision. So as List Mom, I'd like to change the
default reply behavior to go to the list and not to the sender. I
realize that this might create situations that could prove
embarrassing if one accidentally sends a private reply to the entire
list. I'm willing to entertain valid arguments both pro and con to
this change in list behavior. I'd prefer receiving them off-list
(ca...@frameusers.com) unless you feel that your argument merits all
1089 of us taking the time to read it. I won't make this decision
unilaterally -- this list belongs to all of us and relies on all of
us to provide good content and helpful advice.

Bear in mind that if I DO make this change, I will give plenty of
advance warning and repeat it a few times before making the change so
that we all have time to retrain our brains.

[Framers] ADMIN: clicking links and sending attachments

2016-04-18 Thread FrameUsers Admin
The originator of this post was notified last week and his emails
have been put on moderated status.

I want to strongly discourage people from clicking links in ANY email
they receive. If they really want to visit the site, manually type it
in the address bar of their browser.

Also, while I'm thinking of it, I have not set this list to prevent
attachments, but I also discourage them. Not only can they be risky,
attachments to emails on this list download to EVERYONE's computer.
Most people object to uninvited attachments. It is far better to
upload whatever it is you want to share to a place on your own server
or on Dropbox and then provide a link. People can then decide for
themselves if they want to look at what you want to share. If they
do, then the aforementioned cautions about clicking links apply.
