Re: [Framers] Save to PDF - Minutes turned into hours
Way back when, on FM 6, we also had problems with "Save to PDF". Adobe recommended saving as a PostScript file, then saving that as a PDF. -Original Message- From: Framers On Behalf Of Tom Beiswenger Sent: Monday, June 13, 2022 12:26 PM To: An email list for people using Adobe FrameMaker software. Subject: Re: [Framers] Save to PDF - Minutes turned into hours Our company also is still using FM12. All was well until everyone was upgraded to Windows 10 and the company wasn't willing to pay the subscription price for upgrading FM from a 32 bit app to 64 bit. Save to PDF was broken. After attempting to save two large books to PDF and ended up one "no file" and one that worked, I discovered that if I created a little dummy book (a 3-4 page) FM book and always did a save as PDF on it before doing the same with a real book, the save as PDF worked. That was several years ago. I only have to run the dummy book once during an FM session. Not sure why it works, but it does. Tom Beiswenger Mgr. We're still using FM12. It does not matter if we're working on the network or local HDD. We know the IT group changed virus protection from Sophos to Windows Security and we've disabled everything we can. I'm not sure if that is related or if there could have been a Windows update that has affected this version of FM. We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any suggestions? Re: [Framers] Finding inserted and deleted text
So, a follow-up question. There appears to be a Track Changes toolbar defined in FM11. I would like to be able to use it. The maker.ini file says, ToolBarXMLFile=fminit\workspaces\unstructured\toolbars\fmtoolbar.xml and my local maker.ini does not override the ToolBarXMLFile preference. fmtoolbar.xml contains: The contents of fmtoolbar.xml is the same in fminit\... and in AppData\... . As one of my many efforts to be able to access the Track Changes toolbar, I moved "structured.xml" to the end of the list. I also tried removing it altogether. Sadly, when I go to the main menu and click Windows|Toolbars, the only options I have are "Graphics Toolbar" and "Quick Access Bar". Is there a way to enable the Track Changes toolbar? After 5 years of using Word, I get to use FrameMaker again! My colleagues are using FM 11, but the IT folks just gave me a link and license for FM 14. Can I save my work (FM 14) in .fm and .book files that my colleagues can use (FM 11)? Frame to eBook
All our books begin in Framemaker (7, Mac). After some trial and error, here is the workflow I found most effective for converting the books to ePub (and Mobi). Our books are heavily illustrated, so this is a large part of the work. 1. Produce the pdf in color. 2. Save pdf as Word. 3. Import to the Pages eBook template that Apple provides. Or better, cut and paste from Word. Import is flakey. Don't do anything in Word! 4. Clean up Front Matter. 5. Delete headers and footers, if any. (Most will be eliminated by the import.) Don't delete TOC. Pages will produce it, but you should include it at front with links. 6. In Pages, the top-level paragraph style selected in the Document inspector’s TOC tab is used to create chapters in your publication. 7. Check for inline images. Move images out of the Word frames. Then move images so they don't break paragraphs. Move footnotes right after their paragraphs. 8. Insert cover at top. (Twice) 9. Format text: Search for assigned paragraph tags and change. You probably don't have to worry about page breaks before because the new P tags will fix those. 10. Adjust images. Note: you can get larger images by saving Word doc as html. Of course you can also just insert originals, or copy from the pdf. Yes, you have a lot of work to do in Pages before producing a decent ePub file, but the end result is good. Until FM outputs ePub this is the way to go. Hop this helps. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= James Monaco Harbor Electronic Publishing 84 Mt Misery Dr Sag Harbor NY 11963 631 725 9513 http://HEPDigital.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. You can also do this quick modification: Highlight/select the character. Then press the "ALT" and "Up" arrow key. This will change the vertical position of the selected character(s). Keep in mind that the line spacing will also adjust by default. To remedy this, just choose the "Fixed" line spacing option in the Paragraph Designer. This document is written in English (specifically, Palatino Linotype for general text and Consolas fonts in certain places) and have a need to add the "recurring decimal" dot above a number. (There isn't any current need to change this document into another language, by the way.) For example, 10.999 where the last 9 has a dot on top to mean that there are more 9's after there - ad infinitum. How do I do this in a generic way? I.e., add above the last digit of the number only, without having to do something oddball that could make it tortuous (since the digit could be different in different places or could be changed/edited later, etc.). Best practice for anchoring frames outside text frame?
Good morning. I'm hoping your collective experience can help us decide the best way to handle this. I'd be happy to send a short sample to anyone willing to view this. Goal: Steps that need a graphic will have an anchored graphic positioned at right of that step, using as little manual adjustment as possible. * Approach #1 - One text column is used. Graphics are anchored outside text box. Within the anchored frame, a text box is nested, where an auto-number format for figure numbers is used. o Pros - Graphics flow stay with step during pagination changes, etc. o Cons - Almost always requires manual adjustment for vertical spacing when multiple graphics/frames are on the same page. The graphic must be manually aligned within the frame to account for adding the text box (with figure # label). * Approach #2 - Two text columns are used; one is for the body of the document, and the other is only for the figures and their graphics. o Pros - Vertical spacing is nearly automatic. No text box within the anchored frame is needed. o Cons - No true link between steps and their graphics. Must designate the 'figure' paragraph style or the 'figuretopofpage' style to get the right pictures on the page. It is validated, and I believe I've "blessed" the OS9 system folder. I think I've seen this problem before but forget how I fixed it. The font is .OTF (opentype). I'm on digest so please copy direct. Thanks! JM

Unresolved Cross References
Howard, Check your reference pages if you haven't solved the problem yet. We had a similar issue here. My supervisor was using the reference pages to paste text blocks as a sort of clipboard. In one of those text blocks, he had a cross-reference. It wouldn't show up when we created a list of unresolved cross-references, but an error message would detect that there was one somewhere. Jim D. -- Perhaps someone has a suggestion about how to resolve this. I have just?resolved all unresolved cross references in a 50-page document. When I search for any unresolved cross references, I get a message that none are found. Yet when I want to open or print the document, I get a message stating that the document has unresolved cross references. Is this?another FrameMaker glitsch? Howard Rauch? ? Technology Transfer, Inc. moving & preserving links between chapters in a book
Hi all. I'm using Framemaker 8 and we just discovered a problem caused when we move our books to different network locations. If we move from point A to point B, the book's links to chapters (i.e. index) and the links to different places within the same chapter work just fine. What doesn't work is the links from one chapter to another. Is there a solution? There very well may be a better way to do this, but here's how we move our books: We do a "save as" command for each chapter to the new location. We then create a book from scratch in that location (and update the book). I'm stumped. Unavailable fonts issue (Isabelle Lopez)
Have you already checked the reference pages and master pages? - Hi Framers, I'm sure this is a very novice question, but I need some help. I'm running Windows XP (SP2), using unstructured FrameMaker 7.2. Even though I've checked all the paragraph and character tags for stray fonts and have generated a list of fonts for each file, I get a "Document named xxx uses unavailable fonts..." message. The console displays a font that I know is nowhere in my documents, so how do I get rid of this pop-up? The more important issue is that because the documents are reformated on opening because of substitution of fonts, I get unresolved cross-references alerts on good refs every time I reopen saved files. Hope this all makes sense. If not and you're able to help, please feel free to email me. looking for conditional text scenarios
I have a set of four manuals, user's guides and administrator's guides for two products that are very similar, and we use a single set of text insets to enable us to update all four books from a single source. We are using unstructured Frame 7.2 along with FrameScript and numerous plug-ins. We use conditional text and variables extensively to make this solution work. We have eight conditions: AG (Admin Guide) UG (User's Guide) OPTPROC (Product 1) OPTINF (Product 2) OPTPROC_AG (Product 1 Admin Guide) OPTPROC_UG (Product 1 User's Guide) OPTINF_AG (Product 2 Admin Guide) OPTINF_UG (Product 2 User's Guide) Because cross-references in shared text insets need to refer to their targets in container files in the appropriate books, we usually need to use two conditionalized cross-references where one unconditional cross-reference would suffice in a "normal" book. A few of our text insets appear in all four books, so we need to use four conditional cross-references each time we make a cross-reference from those text insets. As a result, we have an even larger amount of conditional text in our books than we would need in "normal" books with conditional text. By assigning color attributes by product (green for Product 1 and orange for product 2) to conditions in our text insets we are able to keep these multiple conditional cross-references straight most of the time. But we have the usual problems seeing conditions in the Frame interface (e.g., conditional tables, spaces and anchors), and the occasional disconnect between what displays on the status bar and what displays in the Conditional Text dialog. The usability of a swap box for assigning conditions regularly annoys me. When I select a condition, click Apply, and go merrily on my way only to discover I forgot to double-click to move it into the In box, you can probably hear my ARGGHH! all the way out in Cupertino. That's about it for conditional text, but if you want input on text insets I can offer volumes of complaints. Thanks, Jim Ramsay James (Jim) Ramsay Senior Technical Writer webMethods, Inc. Book problems
Thanks for all of your help. I just figured out a workaround. I noticed the first file in the book was the only one that I couldn't save as a PDF. The culprit was the last page of the first file. There was a text field that existed in duplicate in both the left master page and body page. I tried deleting the body page text box (since the text is static) but that didn't solve it. For some reason I had to override the "blank" master page we use and add a text box on top of it in the body page. If I get more time I'll experiment for a better solution, but I can work with this for now. Help cross-referencing two autonumbered series
Thank you. That did the trick. My brain was starting to hurt. -Original Message- From: Ridder, Fred [mailto:fred.rid...@intel.com] Sent: Monday, June 25, 2007 3:52 PM To: James Dyson; framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Help cross-referencing two autonumbered series According to the FrameMaker documentation, there is a building block for cross-references that is of the form <$paranum[paratag]>, which is specifically designed for this kind of situation. This building block will pick up the numbering of the last preceding paragraph that is tagged with the "paratag" tag. If you add this building block to your x-ref format (substituting the actual tag name of your parent step, of course) you should be home free. My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. Help cross-referencing two autonumbered series
Hello all, Does anyone know how (or if) you can make a cross-reference when two or more autonumbered series are used? For example: I want the cross reference to read: see Step2c on page 9 I had been using see Step c on page 9 (for example this is formatted: Step <$paranumonly>\ on page <$pagenum>) or Step 2 on page 9, but I need to consolidate in one cross reference. Can anyone help? I am using the following autonumbering formats in my paragraph designer. You'll see I use two different letters for the two different numbered series. For the parent (Step2 in this case) D:Step For the child (c. in this case) T:.\t Thanks, James The information contained in this electronic mail transmission is intended by KVH Industries for the use of the named individual or entity to which it is directed and may contain information that is confidential or privileged. This building block will pick up the numbering of the last preceding paragraph that is tagged with the "paratag" tag. If you add this building block to your x-ref format (substituting the actual tag name of your parent step, of course) you should be home free. My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. Frames within Frames Question
Hello Framers, We have books with different text frames for left and right master pages (in order to leave more space in the gutter than on the outside). When you insert a graphics frame for an illustration it references the page, not the text frame. The result is that if the pagination shifts, as it often does as you insert new graphics or futz with the text, the graphics frames are often off-center since they are getting their coordinates from the page, not the text frame, which has moved. Does anyone have a workaround for this? (It seems to contradict the very principle from which Framemaker gets its name!) While I'm at it, it is annoying and time-consuming to have to set run- around properties separately every time a graphics frame is inserted. Shouldn't there be a Preference for "Always Run-around Bounding Box"? (Mac FM 7.0, I'm on digest) Thanks! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= James Monaco212 777 5463 UNET 2 Corporation 212 777 5534 (fax) 80 East 11th Street 800 269 6422 (sales) New York NY 10003 http://UNET.net http://HEPDigital.com

Tip for loading remote imported graphics quicker
Here's a tip for anyone in my situation. Hope this helps other out there. Problem: My graphics are imported and stored another server, while frame is on another PC. As a result, the loading time for graphics is wretched, and each page in the document with a graphic in it would cause the hourglass to appear, and each page would take a bit to load. Solution: Since putting frame and the graphics on the same computer is not an option, I found the next best thing is to: 1. Open the book. 2. Open each file in the book. 3. Select Print Book 4. Select Print to File 5. Create a file (that lives until the book is completed) called delete_me.ps 6. Select Print. 7. Get some coffee - and the result is that it accomplishes the loading of all of the graphics in the entire book, removing delays when scrolling pages. If there is a better way, let me know. But this is a significant improvement for me - and hopefully for others in my situation. Jim Dyson

Frame on PC = upgrade the Graphics Card?
Yes, the graphics are on a server, but we haven't ever noticed any slow data rates in the past. We can't move the graphics to our local machines and we can't move Frame to the server, so we are stuck with this configuration. The only delays come the first time a graphic is loaded. After I've scrolled through a document all the way (and that can take quite some time), it's fine. I don't this is due to some error since my supervisor is having the same problem on his PC (which has nearly identical statistics to mine). Here are some hardware stats in case they're helpful: Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz, 2.39 GHz) 512 MB Ram Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller (isn't this a cheap imbedded chipset?) John asked the first key question -- are the graphics on a network server? Assuming they're on your PC, how much RAM does it have? More RAM would almost certainly make far more difference than a faster graphics card. You should have at least a gigabyte. If you have lots of large graphics, adding a second gig would be worthwhile. Graphics size within FM 7. and WWP
Hello All, Thanks to everyone who helped me with the problem that I had with my .chm file, in which it seemed to have jumped from ~13MB to ~43MB in one generation. After going through the files thoroughly, it seems that the culprits were graphics that I saved as .bmps, instead of .gifs. After a few simple calculations, I found that these graphics added ~30MB to the total .chm file size. My manager would like to save space wherever possible and has asked that I reduce the size of the larger graphics and thus the size of my help file. At this point I don't see any way of fixing this other than redoing the documentation: Click through our software application Recapture the graphics in question, saving them as .gifs Insert the graphics into my FM file Regenerate the project in WWP Is there a batch process that I can use to change these graphics from .bmp to .gif in WW, or do I have to do this in the source files (FM)? TIA, Jim
Camtasia
Hmmm...is there a Camtasia list that I can join? Let's see if I can get away with posting a question here and on WWP :^) Now that I've finished my documentation, my boss wants me to create tutorials, so he purchased Camtasia. Very nice application. I listened to/looked at some of the tutorials that the previous tech writer created and found them to be fairly good. Although her voice sounded like a transmission between StarFleet and the Enterprise, she was able to run through an entire procedure without stopping. How? I'll never know. I created two tutorials last week and basically had to split the various step procedures into quarters. More accurately, I had to split the software screens I was talking about in quarters, talk about each "quarter", while taking breaks between each. Is this how most of you create tutorials? - Jim ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

TOC Chapter # Troubles
Good morning, I was hoping someone could help me. This is probably an easy fix for many of you. I have a book containing several chapters, and those chapter numbers update just fine when I choose update book. However, when I generate a TOC, each chapter # on the TOC is numbered 1. Here is some data that might be helpful diagnosing this: In the TOC, the autonumber format of the chapter level paragraph format is: S:<$chapnum>\t Under Format/Document/Numbering for Chapter 1 only: * Use Same Number as Previous File is selected for Chapter 1 only (since TOC precedes it) Under Format/Document/Numbering for each other chapter file within the book: * Continue Numbering from Previous File in Book Under Format/Document/Numbering for the TOC: * Chapter # 1 [is manually selected] Your help would be greatly appreciated! I know a workaround, but I'd rather get it right.

AltText Pop-ups
Hello All, I'm creating pop-ups from images in my documentation. I'm doing this by inserting ImageAreaAltText Markers in text frames defined in the graphics. After regenerating my project the pop-ups appear like they're supposed to when I pass my cursor over them. Unfortunately, these pop-ups remain visible for ~5 seconds. With some pop-ups containing 255 characters, five seconds is not enough time to read all of the AltText. How do I modify the time that the pop-ups remain visible? Display Using Printer Metrics
Hi all, Very interesting posts as always. The discussion of display using printer metrics change in the .ini file is interesting. At times, I use several printers here for a single document when editing/supplying hard-copies. Wouldn't changing the "display using printer metrics" setting to ON provide a different visual representation of alignments within my document when viewing the Framemaker file on my computer? Since the setting name implies it is printer-specific, I would think that the display of my FM file on my screen would vary according the last printer selected within the document. Also, if I am wrong, what is the incentive for the Frame developers to leave this feature turned off by default? What are the drawbacks from this .ini file modification? James Dyson Associate Technical Writer KVH Industries, Inc. jdyson at kvh.com http://www.kvh.com - >>> Kevin Hunter 11/08/06 06:53 >>> hi all, I have a situation that would seem to be simple, but I can't find a good solution. In one of our user guides we have a lengthy list of items that I've placed into a 4-column table. The table spans several pages. The table is also frequently ammended (entries added or removed), so the length and relative position of the rows vis a vis the page breaks changes. I want to add column headings for the four columns, that are aligned correctly with the columns they correspond to. I want these column headings to appear at the top of the table, as well as at the top of every subsequent page. So I'm trying to use the Table Title. However, when I use the title, I find I can't put tab stops in, because when I actually press the tab key, the cursor jumps to the first table cell. So in order to place my table headings, I have to set the alignment on that style to left, and space space space over to a spot that approximately lines up with the column below, and type my heading. This works all right (but not great; alignment isn't exact) while I'm looking at the thing on the screen, but when I generate the PDF version, the column heading locations vary slightly from the screen version I'm looking at and don't line up perfectly with the columns. So I end up having to mess with the spacing, re-gen the PDF (which is a pain) and so on, until I end up with something that works in the PDF, but looks wrong on my screen. Any suggestions? Does anyone have any advice on how to express fractions with offset numbers and division symbols? I'd like them to appear as they do in Microsoft Character Map or Quark (ex. ¾). Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Multiple Superscript Offset %s in One Document
Hello, Does anyone know of a way to have multiple offset % settings for superscript within a single frame document? I was hoping there is a work-around, but in the official User's Guide, there is the following ominous quote: "Adjustments to the properties of subscript, superscript, and small cap text apply to all such text in the document." My reserved symbol is either too low or my daggers are too high. Does anyone have any suggestions? Framemaker on Mac
Much more interesting to Mac Framemaker users than Apple's Boot Camp are Parallels' XP emulator (now shipping beta) and -- especially -- the Open Source project for something called "Darwine". Based on Wine, a Linux project, Darwine will allow a user to run a Windows application under OS X. Not only don't you not boot Windows, you don't even buy it. I have no idea how stable this will be, or whether Wine works well on Linux, and of course there will be glitches, but the concept is remarkable. Think of the ramifications: my guess is that many Windows users love their aps not their OS. And if Darwine beats Vista to market. fmPython
I got it to run at last, thanks to lots of trial and error and help from co-worker Keith Arnett. It appears that the script file got corrupted with tabs on the trip from the Web site to my PC. The following message kept appearing in my FrameMaker Console: fmPython - Python scripting for FrameMaker File "", line 15 # get first text inset - this may generate RuntimeException ^ IndentationError: expected an indented block This line was indented with a tab instead of hard spaces. When I removed the tab, the error moved on to the next line. Keith sent me his version of the script file, which he had downloaded using Firefox, and it had no tabs so it worked fine. It appears Internet Explorer decided tabs would be much nicer than spaces, so went ahead and replaced them without telling me! For those attempting to do this trick at home, please note the following gotchas: 1. You must install Python 2.2.3 as your interpreter, not the latest version on their Web site. 2. If you download the script with IE, be sure to replace any substituted tabs with spaces. 3. When you open the script in Frame to load it, open it as text with ASCII encoding. 4. After you run the script, don't save your chapter files or you'll lose your text insets. Sometime ago I sent this question. Please reply if you have seen similarities when doing Service documentation After updating Framemaker Adobe Acrobat and Framescript to latest versions we eventually experienced that in tables with X-refs the first cell from left still has its X-ref function while the rest have no X-refs function.
