PDF Job Options - Standard versus High Quality Print

2013-07-09 Thread Melissa Clark
Hi,

I'm writing today to query others about the Standard versus High Quality Print
options under the PDF Setup in Adobe FrameMaker and Distiller.

The various PDF job options are being evaluated internally. In particular (and
what I'm asking about now), in PDF Setup - Settings - PDF Job Options, some
use Standard, while others use High Quality Print (same setting in
Distiller). Based on what I have been told, there is no reason (benefit) to
using High Quality Print (versus Standard) even in docs that use more
screenshots and/or pictures, and my understanding is that High Quality Print
results in a larger file size. (I have been using High Quality Print for
years.)

My question is whether using Standard (instead of High Quality Print) results
in any detrimental effect.

For reference, here is some information from Adobe:

Standard

* For desktop printers or digital copiers, published on CD or sent to client as
publishing proof * Uses compression/downsampling to reduce file size * Embeds
subsets of fonts, converts colors to sRGB, prints medium resolution, windows
font subsets not embedded by default * Opened in Acrobat and Reader 6.0 and
later High Quality Print * Quality printing on desktop printers and proofing
devices * Downsamples color and grayscale images to 300ppi and monochrome to
1200ppi * Embeds subsets of fonts, leaves colors unchanged, does not flatted
transparency * Opened in Acrobat and Reader 5.0 and later

For what it's worth, I am using Adobe FrameMaker 9 and 10 and Distiller 8.

Any feedback on what others have found while using High Quality Print versus
Standard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Melissa Clark

Adobe information on conditional text enhancements in 8.x / 9.x, feedback, compatibility issues

2010-04-09 Thread Melissa Clark
Hi,
I'm currently using Adobe FrameMaker 7.2.

I'd like to upgrade to Adobe FrameMaker 9.x but am seeking more information
first (for upgrade justification to management). I seem to recall that
there was a whitepaper or other explanation type of document (written by
Adobe) that described the BOOLEAN style conditional text setting
enhancements that were done in FM 8.x. Does anyone happen to know where I
can get that document (or another similar one applicable to 9.x?)?

Does anyone know whether FM documents are completely compatible (open fine
without down saving) between 8.x and 9.x? I seem to recall there's an
incompatibility issue (which means files have to be down saved) between 5.x
and 7.x and again between 7.x and 9.x but am wondering if the same issue
exists between 8.x and 9.x.

I'd also appreciate any general feedback (positive OR negative) that people
want to share on FM 9.x.

Thanks,
Melissa

could use some help with Running H/Fs

2007-11-19 Thread Melissa Clark
Hi,
I'm trying to define some extra Runing H/Fs in the variables to be
used on the master pages.

My settings are:
 Running H/F 10 = $paratext[Product Number]
 Running H/F 11 = $paratext[Document Title]
where Product Number and Document Title are paragraph tags

For example, Product Number is a 7-digit number and Document Title
could be something like specification or datasheet. There are
definitely spaces in the variable titles (as shown above) and the 2
variables (Product Number and Document Title) are defined (not blank),
and I generated the book (which shouldn't make any difference) after
updating the variables.

The header using these variables is defined as:
 Running H/F 10 Running H/F 11
(they are right next to each other)

For some reason, the line using the Running H/F 10 and 11 variables is
still blank. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks,
Melissa

Aha! Thanks to Robert Shelton, I just figured out my problem with the

need help with header information

2007-08-24 Thread Melissa Clark
Hi,
I need some help with header information (Running H/Fs) in a FM 7.2 book
file. I have a document with quite a few chapters, some of which are what I
would consider continued chapters located in separate files.

For example, I have:
 File 1 -- Chapter 1
 File 2 -- Chapter 2
 File 3 -- Chapter 3
 File 4 -- Chapter 3.1 (still in chapter 3)
 File 5 -- Chapter 3.2 (still in chapter 3)
 File 6 -- Chapter 3.3 (still in chapter 3)
...
 File 18 -- Chapter 3.15
 File 19 -- Chapter 4
Chapters 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 must remain separate from Chapter 3.

The headers in my regular (unseparated files) are using automated Running
H/Fs, defined as: $paratext[0 Heading, 0 Heading Preface, Features, 0
Heading Appendix, zGeneratedListTitle]. The headers in Files 4, 5, and 6
are using manually typed in text (not Running H/Fs) that reference the
chapter title from Chapter 3. When manually added, the top header works
properly.

It's the sub header (located below top header) that is not working right due
to the separated files. The sub header in my regular (unseparated files)
are using automated Running H/Fs, defined as: $paratext[1 Heading, 1
Heading Appendix, 1 Heading Preface, Features Heading]. I would like a
similar heading in the separated files (Files 4, 5, and 6). Is there any
way to achieve this without manually typing the 1 Heading level into each
separated file? (Note that the 1 Heading level may not exist in every file.)

(Btw, I'm also open to using Running H/Fs in on the headers in Files 4, 5,
and 6 if someone knows of a good way to do this too.)

I'd appreciate any help that can be provided.

Thanks,
Melissa

need help with x-ref format that is causing conditional text to break

2007-04-26 Thread Melissa Clark

Hi,
I have an issue that occurs when a specific cross-reference style/format is
used together with conditional text. What happens is that when conditional
text is applied to a paragraph that contains this particular cross-reference
format and when the cond text is shown/hidden, somehow the cross-reference
style breaks. This results in half of the x-ref becoming unconditional
(and shown when not desired) and half remains conditionalized.

The x-ref format is defined as:
Blue\$paratext\/ field in the $paratext [TableTitleRegister]
Blue(Table\ $paranumonly[TableTitleRegister] p.\ $pagenum)/
where TableTitleRegister is the paragraph format numbering register tables
and Blue is the character format. Here's an example of the resulting
cross-reference:
A field in the B Register (Table 121 p. 400)
When the x-ref is split into two separate x-refs (one referencing the table
and one referencing the field), conditional text operates normally and as
expected; however, this then means twice as many x-refs.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to modifications that could resolve this
issue or a different format that could be used (with same basic desired
result).

Any help would be appreciated. I've also cross-posted this question to the
TECHWR-L listserv.

Thanks!

how to enlarge conditional text window

2006-08-15 Thread Melissa Clark
 Hi,
I'm sure I have seen this issue come up before...but can't seem to recall
the answer.

Is there any way to make the FrameMaker conditional text window or fields in
the window bigger (either through programming, plug-in, or setting config
file?)? Sometimes my cond text titles are too long and run into the border
so that I cannot see the full title. I would prefer to just make the window
bigger if it is at all possible. Any information on whether this is
possible (and of course how) would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on digest, so please copy my email on your reply.

Thanks!
 Melissa
