RE: PDF back into Frame?

2011-07-13 Thread Robert Shelton
Thanks to everyone who responded. At David Spreadbury's suggestion, I am
using the trial version of NitroPDF to convert the PDF to Word, then
saving the Word as HTML to extract the images. They look as good as the
originals (which isn't always great, but that's not NitroPDF's fault.)

I tried Acrobat's "Export All Images" feature, but the results were not
good. It's possible I could change settings to make them better, but
NitroPDF has done what I need.

Subject: PDF back into Frame?

I need to convert PDF output files back into their
unstructured Frame 7 source (company acquisition, missing/out-of-date
source files, no one left who can find the latest sources if they
exist). I can save as Word from PDF and then open the Word document in
Frame. When I do that, the graphics are all embedded in the Word doc,
and the resolution really takes a hit. I also tried saving the PDF as
HTML. This gets me separate graphics files, but again the resolution
isn't as good as the original.

Are there any better solutions?

Running Frame 7 and Acrobat Pro 7.1.1 on Windows XP
(it's been a while since I updated my tools).

Thanks very much.

But if I don't conditionalize the pilcrow, when I hide the condition the
pilcrow stays there, and I end up with a blank paragraph. In most cases,
that's not what I want. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution.

If you have Adobe Acrobat, another option is to produce a PDF file from
the Frame document, then use Acrobat to enable commenting in Adobe
Reader. You need one copy of Acrobat Pro, but the reviewers only need
the free reader.

I hesitate to even say this, but I've been using Save As with Frame 7
and Acrobat 7 for a at least a couple of years, without problems (except
that links in the PDF are sometimes off by one line, which is weird, but
rare).

Art, I don't know what you mean when you say you can't set job options
with Save As. The PDF Setup dialog box lets me set the job options file
I want to use. Are you saying that Save As ignores that setting?

Now where's some wood for me to knock on?

Thanks.

In my somewhat limited experience, yes, this usage is widespread. That
doesn't make it right. I think it's mostly just people trying to sound
technical and fancy. If you're writing for programmers, maybe. If you're
writing for a non-technical audience, I would use "number" and "letter."
And for "alphanumeric characters," I would say "letters or numbers." But
that may just be me.

Encountered? Yes. Conquered? No. Like you, I just say to remove
overrides every time, and every time nothing seems to happen.

So at least know that you aren't alone, and you won't be the only one
happy to see the answer.

Diane,

Thanks. That method is new to me. But you'd need to do that separately for each
document in a book, wouldn't you? Whereas if you use the global S&R method, you
can do the entire book in one swell foop:

1. Import the new text.
2. Manually change one paragraph to the new paragraph tag (a1body).
3. Use Copy, Special, to copy the paragraph tag to the clipboard.
4. Globally search for the paragraph tag ameritem, replacing by pasting.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for all tags.

This way is fewer steps, but I suspect which one is actually easier depends on
the exact situation.

RE: Strange PDF Problem

2007-03-20 Thread Robert Shelton
I'm by no means an expert on Frame or Acrobat, but I just renamed a file
created with Save As PDF from Frame 7.0 (578) and the internal links all still
work. So not all internal links contain the filename and break when you change
it.

Lin,

I use e-mail based reviews in Acrobat 7, not 8, so if this has changed, feel
free to ignore me. :-)

After I've added the changes to my Frame docs and regenerated the PDF, if I try
to send it for review again, Acrobat says it can't do that because the PDF is
already part of an e-mail based review. Is that the problem you're having? If
so, there are two ways around it that I know of:

1. Generate the second PDF with a different name than the first one.

2. In Acrobat, from the Send for Review menu, select Tracker. This shows a list
of your current reviews. Right-click the earlier review in the list and select
Remove. You can now send the same PDF for review again.

Place graphics frame in anchored frame?

2007-01-24 Thread Robert Shelton
Frame 7.0 on Windows 2000

I'm working with an inherited document. It has a graphics frame, which I would
like to either convert to an anchored frame or place in an anchored frame so it
will flow correctly with the text around it. I can't find any way to do this.
What am I missing?

In case it matters, the graphics frame is a flow chart, so it contains several
drawing objects and several text frames.

Thanks for your help.

Jon,

With the insertion point in a paragraph that uses "desiredstyle," from the Edit
menu, select Copy Special, Paragraph Format. You now have the desired format on
the clipboard.

Now, do a search and replace through the entire book, searching for paragraph
tag "unwantedstyle" and choosing "By pasting" in the Change field. You might
want to do one or two replaces individually to make sure this gives you what
you want, but you can then do a "change all" for the book.

Not exactly automated, but it will do the whole book a lot faster than changing
one tag at a time.

(Thanks to David Knopf for teaching me this when I was starting with Frame, not
that long ago.)

My colors are gone -- Fixed

2006-09-15 Thread Robert Shelton
I've been asked (again off-list) for more details: Somehow, a setting had been
changed on the Define Color Views dialog (on the View menu, select Color,
Views). I was set to use View 2, which had most of the colors set to invisible.
I didn't even know that dialog existed, so I have no idea how it happened. But
I selected View 1 instead, which had nothing set to invisible, and everything
is fine now.

You can't do it in Acrobat 6 either Standard or Pro. You need Acrobat Pro 7 to

MMoS may not like "if..., then," but that doesn't mean it agrees with the
editor. There's a big difference between saying the "then" is unnecessary and
saying you need to add an "and."

For what it's worth, I rarely use "then" in this situation, but using "then" is
much better than using "and then." As others have said, in this construction,
that's just grammatically wrong.
