I like Eurostile a lot? (bought it from Adobe for myself decades ago and loved
the squarish look, particularly Eurostile Wide for some uses).

Google recommends Orbitron as "similar" to Eurostile. However, I have not used
that one yet, so please check it out yourself.

In my current company, we use fonts that are likely to be public or generally
available, and Google fonts tend to fit that requirement well.

Some time back, our design folks chose Nunito and Montserrat from Google as our
nominal sans serif "standards" for our template for presentation materials. I
have not started using them yet ...

My favorite for PowerPoint decks is in the Segoe family - regular and bolded
Segoe UI looks very elegant (to me anyway - beauty is in the eye of the
beholder, right? ??) when presented on a screen.

P.S. You probably did not realize that you opened a Pandora's box for me by
discussing fonts! ??

I am a geek in this matter - I own a printed copy of Adobe's book of their
fonts from some years ago, and also own these books on fonts:

OK all,
I am doing a major overhaul on an existing template for a client. I very much
like the San serif fonts of Eurostile or Roboto, but I really don t want to
break my cardinal rule of using proprietary fonts that have to be embedded in
the final PDF. I really would like to be able to use a font that comes standard
with windows, but which font, in your opinion, that comes standard with windows
would be the closest to either of these two fonts?

My client saw a template that I was working on for another project and really
commented that they liked the look of the Roboto font and then I showed him one
with the EUROSTILE font and they like that one just as much. That said, I don t
wanna leave my client with having to deal with fonts in their source files.
Thanks!

What about creating the next heading level *before* adding the footnotes?
Possibly with the extra pilcrow after the table as an added buffer?

Hi Dan,
Yeah I ve tried that too and I m just at my wit s end. After I hit a return
from the last table footnote, no matter what type of tag I select with point
and click, and then press enter to start a new line and start another tag, it s
like the hold of the table footnote will not go away. It s like FrameMaker won
t let me start any new tag after a table footnote. It s stuck thinking
everything that follows should be kept with the table footnotes

I ve given up for now and have just manually numbered the footnotes because
there s only four of them and there s no expectation that they ll change at
all. However, I still would like to know why after a table footnote when you
hit return, and then try to point and click and setting new tag at the pilcrow,
Framemaker isn t recognizing the new tag s properties. It appears to stay stuck
in table footnote mode.

Thank you!

Hi everyone,

Who at Adobe suddenly thought it was a good idea to automatically add a hard
space before a single quotation mark in French, in Framemaker 2022?
Anyone knows how to turn this off?

[Framers] Track Changes has stopped working

2024-01-30 Thread acraig
I'm posting this for my contractor.

And note that sometimes something he tries works for a bit, then it stops
working.

Track Changes has stopped working.

At the start of the project, it was working great...and then it wasn't. I
can only assume I have somehow blocked the process.

I have tried to Enable Track Changes in my document and the Bookfile from
the Edit menu as well as using the Toolbar functions. The only action I can
make is to click OK on a pop message that says "Finished Enable Track Text
Edit in Book" but the Enable feature still remains selectable.

I have attempted to resolve this issue by performing the following steps:

*   Saving as a Mif
*   Update the Bookfile
*   Installed the latest Updates
*   Closed out of FrameMaker

However, none of these steps have worked.

I am currently using FrameMaker version 17.0.3.546

on a 64-bit OS

Running Windows 11 Home edition

Re: [Framers] Printing Tag Properties

2023-12-15 Thread acraig
I've "self-documented" inside Word templates - which other people use.

However, no one else in the company (or at least in my division) uses Frame
so that's not an issue-except when I have a contractor, as I have right now.

But it's worth considering, thanks.

Subject: Re: [Framers] Printing Tag Properties

Hello Alison,

Since anything can happen in a FrameMaker file that is out there in use, I
always document my templates by writing a style guide in that template going
through all the various tags, and other settings that make up a FrameMaker
file. By keeping that information in the template you prevent redefinition
of elements in one book/file from being mistaken for the sanctioned
settings. It also allows importing of the definitions of any of the elements
from the template when you have to bring a book/file back into compliance
with a template.

This worked well when have 50+ engineers working in the individual files
that make up a book, some of whom are only casually interested in not using
the Word format-as-you-go method of working.

In my opinion, any FrameMaker template should self document in this way so
that one knows the rules one is working with.

Those are my 2 cents worth.

Is there a way to print Character, Paragraph and Table tag properties
directly from a Frame file?

As a lone writer, I never have time to create a decent style guide, but in
the Spring I'm going to have access to a student from a local tech comm
program and I want them to at least start documenting tags for a style

If there's a way to export these details, even if the output isn't pretty,
that would be great.

2023-12-14 Thread acraig
Unfortunately, due to the security precautions that our company takes, third
party apps can take months to be approved - it they are approved at all.

I do have the Silicon Prairie tools, so I'll have to explore them in depth.
I only took a quick glance and didn't see what I was looking for - I didn't
read all the instructions (as I should have).

The MIF method looks workable if a little cumbersome.

Thanks for the ideas.

Just an additional comment on my earlier Format List from squidds.de
post: I'm using an older version of FM, so haven't bought this utility for a
while. But I seem to recall that, since I last purchased, they changed their
license from a one-time purchase to requiring an upgrade with every FM
upgrade. So you might want to check that out and consider it before any
purchase.

Re: [Framers] Regarding "Converting a frame maker document to a word document"

2023-12-13 Thread acraig
I've been using the FRAME > PDF > WORD option a lot lately (50-150 page docs)
so the engineers can do their editing and commenting in the Word doc.

But I always preface my explanation to them with the caveat... "this creates an
incredibly ugly Word file".

If you do the test run on 20 pages or so (pick complex pages) and do a truly
honest quote, I can't imagine why the client would want to continue.

But " drink heavily and then run away" is a really good option as well. :-)

Thanks everyone for all the responses. Despite the "death knell" tone, I was
99.9% sure that that was going to be the case. Sigh. I need to reach out to my
client and set the expectations and let them decide how badly they want to go
down the rabbit hole - and it won't be cheap. I am still sticking with my
original solution which is to drink heavily and then run away.

I need to have my remote contractor convert a Frame book from 2022 down to

There are only about 34 files, but that would be a royal pain to do

And no, I can't update to the Frame latest version. We have heavy security
protocols in place so Frame is only updated once every 2 years (2024 is the
next time we'll update across the company).

Hi Alison,

You have to set your numbering at the book component level, not the document
level. Right-click on the components and set the numbering there and then
update the book.

Alison,

The fix is fairly simple. You basically need to specify two counters in your
numbered list formats; one for each list level.

The first numbered and alpha list steps have the following auto-numbering

setups:

.\t

This should be < =0>.\t (set the top-level list number to "1"; reset
but do not print the second-level list number.)

.\t

You actually don't need this format. Each top-level list will resent the
counter for the second-level list. If you did keep this format, it would be
< >.\t

Second and subsequent numbered and alpha list steps have the following

auto-numbering setups:

.\t

This should be < =0>.\t (increment the first-level list number; reset
but do not print the second-level list number)

.\t

This should be < >\t (maintain, but do not print, the first-level list
number. Increment the second-level list).

Once set up, FrameMaker's list numbering is rock-solid and reliable.

Hope this helps!

When I finish the last alpha sub-list entry and revert to the numbered

Re: [Framers] Updating Para Tag Language in a Translated FM Book

In this particular case, the parent company simply has really high security
fences, and as a "privacy wacko" - per my spouse :-) - I am on board with that.

But yes, I will keep plugging away get permission to spend less that $100 to

Hi, Alison!

One argument that might work with the PTB to incentivize the IT approval is to
compare the cost of your manual find/replace operation (your time, the delay in
the whole operation it s part of, etc,) to the few moments it would take to run
the Paragraph Tools. What manager wants to be responsible for increasing cost
and delay, when they could be garnering praise for improving ROI? :)

When I first started working at a large company that wrote its docs in unix
text editors like vi, and published in customized xroff, one of the core tech
pubs teammates wrote unix scripts that massaged the files. They used a variety
of native unix utilities and pipelined their outputs to bash the content into
shape. Yes, there was development time, but the rest of the team only needed to
type the command, and that effort paid back by doing the work almost instantly.

If there s no other way to get some processing without a tool you now have and
can t install, perhaps you can interest a colleague who loves coding challenges
to use Windows batch file (or Mac Terminal) command line tools to perform
operations on MIF files. Technically, creating a script this way isn t adding
anything to the system. After testing, it's just automating manual stuff that
humans might make mistakes when repeating.

Corporate power has some good aspects, but stifling productivity isn t one.
Often sticking with tradition hides the fact that resisting change is costly.

Cheers!

Many thanks to the ipad for changing "xref" to "creo" below. Sheesh! Apple
needs to totally revamp the iPad autocorrect. I could go on for hours on
that.

I once worked (briefly) for a company that was using Fmbatch to generate
books nightly but refused to update to fmbatch 5.5 from fmbatch 5.0 for
'validation' reasons. This meant that if a book generation failed it just
failed to generate the book and PDF and posted an error, usually an
unresolved creo. They were using more a more advanced version of FM on both
Windows and SUN machines and the repositories were MIFs (thus no problem
opening the files from a more advanced version). Fmbatch 5.5 would generate
the books, even if there was an error (-noerror option if I recall). Once I
got them to switch over we could reliably generate nightly PDFs and the
number of pdf working copies we generated nightly allowed the engineering
teams to have "current state" docs to work with. Not sure how they handled
the validation, but it was definitely worth it as we were quickly playing
BACH nightly for hours at a time.

Hi Peter:

Thanks. I'm still waiting for permission from HQ IT Security to buy and
install a set of Silicon Prairie tools. They have to evaluate everything
before I can install anything. (The guy who runs SP even provided me with a
statement about how his programs work.)

I think I've been waiting for 18 months at this point... :-(((

But thanks for the reminder, I'll send our local IT Admin another note
asking him to follow up with HQ IT.

For the future, silicon prairie software paragraph tools IIRC can do this
kind of fine-tuning. Also, creating and importing a skeleton MIF file with
only the settings you want can do it.

OTOH, bruises earned but doing real grunt work in the trenches give one the
best confidence. :) Congrats!

I want to change the language to German - hopefully in some kind of batch

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding something in your explanation.

Can I do this in this in the MIF files with Search and Replace?

Alison Craig,

You could import the tags from the original template (leaving overrides in
place if you use them). If the English is part of the stand definition in
the returned files (and not an override) that should work.

If no "clean template" for the book exists, I would create one to have ready
for this sort of contingency.

[Framers] Save as MIF

Does Frame (subscription version) include a batch method to save all files
in a book to MIF?

I couldn't find anything in the manual and none of the included scripts

This may not be possible in Frame (2020), but in Word I can include an
e-mail link and format it such that when the new e-mail opens, the Subject
line includes what I want (in this case, the word "Documentation" as I am
inviting people to ask questions or provide feedback and suggestions about

Can you do this Frame? If so how?

If it's covered in the manual, they've hidden it well.

Hello,

In all the years I have been using FrameMaker, I have only ever experienced
files that couldn't be opened in the following cases:

1 - files saved on USB drives, and Windows deciding to save energy putting
computer to sleep

2 - files saved on network locations

3 - files located on a failing drive

#1 was very irritating. A combination of Windows 10 and HP hardware
actually corrupted not just FrameMaker documents, but also other files -

with no identifiable pattern to it. As a result, I avoid using USB drives

for everyday working.

#2 has been frustrating. If the network drive, or the network connection
speed is slow, I've experienced FrameMaker crashing when attempting to
update books, or worse, when attempting to access referenced PDF files.

#3 was experienced by our FM trainer who thought his computer had caught a
virus. I diagnosed [using "CrystalDiskPortable"] the hard drive was in fact

failing to read and write files ... occasionally! After using the Linux

utility ddrescue, I was able to retrieve 99.99% of his files.

If I remember correctly, FrameMaker files are always written out in
multiples of 1024 bytes [1kb].

If I'm working on a big project, I get in to the habit of using a frequent
backup strategy to store FM and other documents in a ZIP archive file with a
timestamp reference. Just in case.

I hope this helps.

files (which I've taken to doing to protect the integrity of the book).

Please note that as I also work with MS Word, restarting my system at least
twice, if not 3 or 4 times a day is integral to my "work methodology".

Yet Frame still crashes. Regularly.

Hi Betrand,

Sorry to hear this.
However:
o From your other thread I understand that you used and old version.
Newer versions are definitely more stable.
o My experience is that Adobe is more responsive than some years ago.
The support e-mail address is: mailto:tcs...@adobe.com
When you have an issue (e.g. with recovery files), then also post it on the
Adobe forum.
There are a few Adobe employees who follow the discussions.
Your issue might get more attention.
And post your issue on the Adobe Tracker:

Best regards

This is an old thread but here is a comment. I fundamentally rely on FrameMaker
and would never "bash" it. On the other hand, right now at the end of a
two-year book-writing process, with the camera-ready due on Monday, I got a
crash this afternoon. Not the first -- in my experience, if I am working on a
book a FrameMaker session does not last more than three or four days before it
vanishes -- but possibly the worst ever. The supposed recovery files were
corrupted; just to restart from the backup to a stable state took almost two
hours. I do back up obsessively (as I have been burned many times before), but
still. And when you are in delicate fine-tuning, typo-fixing and final indexing
mode, working over several chapters at once, going through every recent change
to see which were kept and which were lost, is a nightmare.

One might imagine that by this time they would have either fixed the crashes or
devised a decent recovery mechanism.

There is still nothing that measures up to FrameMaker for writing books with a
sophisticated structure, but if it did respect the integrity of customers' work
that wouldn't hurt.

I don't know why everyone likes bashing FrameMaker.

Is there anything else that:
  Is suitable for long books.
Gives you PDF output as is appears while you are working (WYSIWYG).
Can be converted to online help, (even if it requires buying an extra
program).

FM happens to have online help conversion built-in, but I could live without
that if that was another decent authoring tool that worked together with
another decently priced conversion tool.

Word comes close to checking all those boxes, but has problems with large files
and other issues.

Someone mention another page layout program recently, but I forgot what it was.
Maybe it was Xara Page & Layout Designer. But can it do online help at all?

Please post if you know of another authoring tool that is excellent for PDFs
and can be used for online help.

My biggest gripe with FM is the price, but you know what, you really don't need
to buy every new version that comes out. Do you buy every new smartphone that
comes out, or wait until you need a new phone? Anyone under 20 is excluded from
answering that question :)

[Framers] Frame Won't Keep Color Settings for Track Text Edits

2022-02-11 Thread acraig
Win 10, Frame 2020 (16.0.2.916)

This worked fine until this morning.

For some reason, Frame has lost the configured Color settings for Track Text
Edits.

Yesterday, I sent off a single file from a book attached to an e-mail, and
if I open that specific file from the e-mail, the settings are correct.

But when I open the PS version of the file through its Book, as well as
files in another Book, they, and all other files in both Books have Added
Text and Deleted Text reset to "as is" (Edit >Track Text Edits > Configure
Color).

When I reset the fields to Red and Green, the settings don't take.

The only thing I can think of is that something went wrong this morning when
I copied Conditional formats from a file in one of the Books to all the
files in the other Book. I've tried a third Book that wasn't part of the
copy and it still has the correct Track Text Edit settings.

I even tried copying Conditional text setting from one file of the good
Book, to one of the affected Books. The files in the good Book remained fine
and the files in the other Book still have incorrect Track Text Edit
settings.

I can't do any work in FrameMaker until this setting is back on track- does
anyone have any suggestions?

Re: [Framers] Automated index or list of keywords in Frame or Word?

2022-01-01 Thread acraig
Hi Dan:

In his retirement, my husband Don has taken up a third career as an indexer
- and no, I'm not trying to sell you his services. ;-)

He recently completed a Word project with 250,000 indexable words (39
articles for a publication on the Anthropology of Technology) and for that
he used an SaaS product called "Index Manager" (link is below with the info
he forwarded to me). He says the company that makes the product supports
Structured Frame - although I don't have any details about what that
entails.

As an SaaS product, Don signed up for only one quarter as most jobs allow
him to use another product that works with print-ready PDFs from the
publisher. If he needs it again, he'll sign up again.

He says that you could definitely work on a chapter-by-chapter basis then
stitch it all together at the end to create a single index (again, I don't
have details on how that's done).

And yes, the program inserts Word index markers into the Word file even
though you work in the SaaS software.

It has a bit of a learning curve, especially for advanced features. The
company is very responsive and helpful with any problems.

Lots of people also use one of the following.

"DexEmbed": I believe this is a 32-bit program,

Subject: [Framers] Automated index or list of keywords in Frame or Word?

Good afternoon,

First a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone on the list!

By way of background:

I have been typesetting an annual textbook in FrameMaker for the last 15+
years. I retired at the end of September, but that's not the cause of my
inquiry. I will be continuing to do the same work moving forward on a
seasonal freelance basis. No, the changes are to other positions in the
editorial workflow and a necessary streamlining of the processes involved.

The book that is produced, while existing in PDF formats for electronic
access by course attendees, is still primarily a printed work. We've had
internal discussions regarding discontinuing the traditional index given the
labor involved, given that people typically use Ctrl-f in the PDFs, however
this is of no use to a person who only has the printed book. Even if there
is no contextual index with content organized into entries, sub-entries,
etc. (we've typically gone 3-4 levels deep), IMO there needs to at least be
an alphabetical list of major terms/concepts with corresponding page
numbers, i.e., a "poor-man's index."

Historically, the insertion of index markers has been done in Microsoft Word
after the technical and stylistic editing is done, immediately prior to
import into Frame, with further refinement and reconciliation all done
within Frame. This insertion of index markers has been a manual process, but
the position doing this work is being eliminated, and the SMEs and editors
do not have the time in the process (or expertise) to take on this process.
Outsourcing is not an option, given the idiosyncratic industry jargon that
is used; any general indexing service or freelancer wouldn't have the
background in our specific industry to be able to effectively index the
material. We've tried using external services to do this in the past and it
failed dismally due to the lack of context by the party(ies) doing the
indexing. There won't be time or resources to take on a learning curve once
we're in the midst of production or to vet the work at that point.

I realize full well that there is an art/skill to creating an effective
index. I'm not arguing that. However, for expediency moving forward this
manual process needs to be eliminated, so I am looking for alternative
automated solutions that will get us part of the way there.

The chapters are produced at different times over a 6-month period, with
initial index entry reconciliation work starting at approximately the 4
month mark, and the majority of the reconciliation work being done at the
very tail end of the production process immediately prior to going to press
(so very small window to complete the final work in Frame).

So I am looking for suggestions for either of the following:

1. Microsoft Word-based methods or plugins that will create a
keyword/key-term list and insert index markers that will then flow through
into FrameMaker upon import. It needs to create and insert the Word index
markers; it cannot be a manual insertion process once a list is created.

2. Script/plugin for FrameMaker that does the same after the Word content is
imported. Again, it needs to be an automat
