As I am the only Tech Writer where I work, I am swamped and have not been able to get to this conversion. I would like to give my boss an idea of what it would cost to get this outsourced. I use Klaus Daube's enhanced Toolbar (http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker71.html), which makes it easy to copy a paragraph or character style in Frame and paste it using Frame's powerful Find/Replace commands. It’s been a while since I have had to do this, but if you save the Word file as an HTML document, Word will extract all of the graphics and place them in a separate folder. I believe the graphics were saved as jpg files, but you can convert/rename those files as needed. Frame has import from Word. It actually works. If you have styles in Word, it is really good. You have to save the file as..doc >From Frame file menu Choose import file, as copy Then the first time there is a settings box You need to map Word styles to Frame files and then import. It works well. Once you make a settings file that you are pleased with, save it and reuse it each time. However, it did not cope with my 300 plus page book, so I had to make smaller word files from it. However, for graphics use the tip about docx, right click on your docx fike and choose unzip. You will get a folder of graphics. There are a few good tutorials on the internet for this. It takes quite a while, especially if there are many graphics. I have precise notes in the office, but am not currently there. I strongly recommend starting with one of the smallest docs to learn the process. If due to bad formatting in the Word source the import is not clean and needs a lot of work, you might try the convert-to-zip-and-extract approach. If you are going to import into a stricter FameMaker environment, then you conversion table will help cut down on your mania formatting. If it isn’t structured then the other suggestions to use he plugins are a great way to go. Mostly, people use line formatting instead of the paragraph and character tags, which makes transformation more difficult and manual. I always export the Word document to RTF first to import the text, then I save the word/RTF file as a web page (html). If everything is tagged as Normal, you can do a find/replace in Word to find specific character formats, such as a specific font size, a certain font, or bold, and replace with a specific style. Then paste that into my new Frame doc and use Rick Quatro's TableCleanerES tools to strip the table of Word's stuff. (It isn't always 100% clean, but you'll be nearer to where you need to be.) Then manually apply Frame's table and character tags. Graphics: There are many different ways to handle graphics. Personally, I find the best way is to copy/paste out of Word and into Adobe Illustrator. Then import the .ai file directly into an anchored graphic frame in Frame. Hope this helps. If your Word docs are formatted to use 100% Normal style, then, your only choice is to manually tag every paragraph in Frame. I find it easiest to copy/paste from the Word doc rather than opening the Word doc in Frame. That prevents all of Word's garbage from coming along for the ride. However, with tables, I will open an .rtf version of the Word doc in Frame so as to capture the table and its contents. The import usually isn't an issue because FM has improved the import facility a lot; the reformatting to FM tags is usually the big thing. Hi Everyone, I have read over the years numerous ways to get Word docs into FrameMaker. Is there one "best method" out there that everyone agrees is the way to go.
