RE: Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-08 Thread Laura Fergusson
Hi Laura, I've had the same issue. I've experimented quite a bit with this.

What I eventually found worked best, was to create a PDF of the manual with the
required conditions showing. In Acrobat, I then use Export Word document or
Export RTF.

It's still messy I have to admit - you may need to do a quick edit of the
resulting Word files to tidy them up, but it's what I now do.

Depends really if the customer wants just the text or if they want a nice
version.

Hope this helps
Laura

I have a group of manuals where I use conditional text to keep track of the
different variations.

My customer asked to have a word copy of one of the manuals. Is there a way to
choose conditional text for the manual that I want which excludes all of the
other conditional text in the final output? When exporting to an .rtf file, all
of the information gets exported, even if I'm only showing the conditional text
that I'm interested in. As a work around of last resort, I had to do a Show All
and manually strip out everything I didn't want in the final version.

There must be a better way. I've been using v7.1, but on the trial version of
10 I noticed the same thing happening. Does any one have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-08 Thread Laura Larson

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

For those who were curious, the reason I was asked to do this is that the
company who owns the manuals sometimes sells their product under a rebranding
agreement, and smaller companies do not have the justification to use Frame.
I'm not too worried about anyone else taking over that manual set. The company
has been a client for a number of years and they keep pushing work my way. And,
their customer was warned that the Word output wasn't going to look too pretty.
;-)

In terms of the export itself, the actual exporting to .rtf files wasn't a big
deal for those chapters that were mostly straight text. However, there were
plenty of tables and screen captures, which initially bloated up the manual to
640MB. Using Acrobat Pro to save as word files seriously messed up the
formatting in places, so I ended up using a combination of the two methods for
individual chapters.

As for the .mif export, that didn't seem to eliminate the conditional text that
I was trying to exclude. Maybe I just didn't know enough about how to do that.
Next time I'll try Mif2go.

Thanks again!
-Laura

Hi Laura,Make a copy of the files. Then, in the copy delete the conditions that you do NOT want shown in the output. When you delete a condition, you are given the option to make the text unconditional or to delete it. You'll want to delete it. After you do that, save the file out to RTF.Regards,Sarah O'Keefe

RE: Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-06 Thread Alison Craig
If you don't have Acrobat Pro X, there are also inexpensive converters out
there that will convert the FM-based PDF to RTF (I use a cheap one called BCL
easyConverter 3.0 (Word Version). I think it was $20.)

The RTF formatting is not always the best, but for the reasons I need it, it
does the job.

2011-12-06 Thread Steve Rickaby
At 16:17 -0700 5/12/11, Laura Larson wrote:

My researches here indicate that this can be achieved by concealing the
conditional text you don't want in the output, then saving as 'text only'. The
bummer here though is that you will lose all formatting. (I have this save
option in FrameMaker v 7 for Mac, but you might not.). As you have discovered,
RTF export exports the concealed conditional text also.

...but I took a step backwards when I read the above. It might spare you a lot
of woe if you tried to find out (quietly, if necessary) just *why* they your
customer wants a Word copy of your work? It betokens a substantial lack of
understanding of the difference between FrameMaker and Word.

I am reminded of a job I did a decade or so ago for an aerospace company. I ran
a load of designs past them, but the response came back 'We'd like it in A4 and
Word please'. When I tentatively enquired as to the reason for the latter (the
former being inexplicable), it was 'so that our engineers can maintain the
manuals'. I sighed and proceeded to create ten very complex user, maintenance
and programming guides, in Word (in the process of which I discovered a whole
new, fascinating and previously unknown Word bug, but that's another story).

Whether their engineers succeeded in 'maintaining' the manuals I don't know,
but I doubt it, as it required a very in-depth understanding of Word.

Forgive me for rambling on.

Unfortunately, after some testing some months ago, I came to the conclusion
that the Acrobat X PDF to Word (RTF) conversion is not good for anything for
documents with things like tables, even in the latest versions of Acrobat.

I would recommend that it is *far* better to use some other tool. For example,
I now use PDF Converter Pro 7 from Scansoft, for example, but even this is not
perfect. You still end up having to massage the resulting Word file to fix
broken things, but it is much better than Acrobat X!

Yes, Mif2Go excludes any hidden conditional text
when it makes Word files (or any other oputput,
like CHM). You can further automate that by
creating a Frame template with the show/hide
conditions as you want. Mif2Go will import
the template without affecting your original
FM files (just affecting the MIF it uses).

Mif2Go also does a much, much better job of
RTF than Frame's native output, which is almost
worthless for docs with figs and tables, IMHO.
About half our customers get it for Word docs
alone...

Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

What about printing a PDF with the conditions you want shown; then use Acrobat
Pro X to turn the PDF into a Word doc?

Subject: Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the
conditional text?

Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-06 Thread Sarah O'Keefe
Hi Laura,

Make a copy of the files.

Then, in the copy delete the conditions that you do NOT want shown in the
output. When you delete a condition, you are given the option to make the text
unconditional or to delete it. You'll want to delete it. After you do that,
save the file out to RTF.

Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-06 Thread Alison Craig
If you don't have Acrobat Pro X, there are also inexpensive converters out
there that will convert the FM-based PDF to RTF (I use a cheap one called BCL
easyConverter 3.0 (Word Version). I think it was $20.)

The RTF formatting is not always the best, but for the reasons I need it, it
does the job.

2011-12-06 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Unfortunately, after some testing some months ago, I came to the conclusion
that the Acrobat X PDF to Word (RTF) conversion is not good for anything for
documents with things like tables, even in the latest versions of Acrobat.

I would recommend that it is *far* better to use some other tool. For example,
I now use PDF Converter Pro 7 from Scansoft, for example, but even this is not
perfect. You still end up having to massage the resulting Word file to fix
broken things, but it is much better than Acrobat X!

Mif2Go might do that when conditions are hidden. I'd have to play with it and
get back to you.

Yes, it seems to work well using Mif2Go providing that the content that you
don't want is hidden in the FM file before you convert.

Yes, Mif2Go excludes any hidden conditional text
when it makes Word files (or any other oputput,
like CHM). You can further automate that by
creating a Frame template with the show/hide
conditions as you want. Mif2Go will import
the template without affecting your original
FM files (just affecting the MIF it uses).

Mif2Go also does a much, much better job of
RTF than Frame's native output, which is almost
worthless for docs with figs and tables, IMHO.
About half our customers get it for Word docs
alone...
