RE: Using XML with FrameMaker

2014-03-26 Thread Craig Ede
Max,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but during the webinar introducing FM12 some weeks
back, didn't they show that you could switch to this mode in FM (as some kind
of menu choice) so that you are effectively running FM XML Author 12? I know
that this is much less powerful than the full FM12 Structured, so you really
don't want to do this because you are effectively restricting the functionality
of the product you have.

But the advantage of this is that you can (without installing something new,
risking conflict, etc. etc) see exactly what FM XML Author gives you to work
with. This can be great for evaluating whether it will be useful in your
particular situation or not.

One further note on Structured FM usage: I routinely work on unstructured
documents, but my FM 11 (at work) and FM 10 (at home) are both set to start up
in structured mode. Except for appearance of the extra menu choices, working in
structure mode does not affect the ability to work in unstructured document.
Those don't get in my way and I can work seamlessly on either kind of document.

Thanks.

Craig

Re: Using XML with FrameMaker

2014-03-25 Thread Mark Soiseth
Thanks everyone. Actually, I contacted Adobe "support" (cough) and all they
could tell me was that it can "save as" and "import" XML. That didn't seem
right so, after posting this, I searched a little further and found the XML
mode in FrameMaker.

You need to switch to structured mode to edit XML files.

Re: Using XML with FrameMaker

2014-03-24 Thread Scott Prentice

Yes .. FrameMaker works directly with XML (has since FM7.1).

FM11 (and 12) even have a "code view" mode that lets you edit the XML
markup directly.

Hi,

We're finally using FrameMaker here. I've used it since 5.5.6 but
here's a situation I've not seen before.

Before, they were using Word and an XML-based authoring system. Word
did not play nicely with their automated review process, but, with
their XML documents, the author could sign the file out of the
repository, then send it automatically for review. The review and any
changes would come back directly, whereupon, the author could make
changes and check it back into the repository.

What is important here is that the reviewer can view the raw XML file;
the author does not need to convert or export anything. Now,
FrameMaker can export into XML, but doing so would break the automated
process and they would be reduced to doing like I have to do with
Word: e-mail chunks of text or save them somewhere on the network, etc.

So, my question is this: can FrameMaker work directly with XML? Or
does FrameMaker only work with its binary *.FM file?

Thanks for this. I could theoretically check this out myself, but, for
the moment, I only have the licence and not the software :D
