Modern Russian fonts do not have all the characters that were used in Russian texts in pre-revolutionary times, and when they do have them, they are not accessible via the keyboard or via the Alt-numeric codes. I did insert this one character (yat') into my FM8 document, and it looked great on the screen, but then appeared as a blank space when printed to PDF, or to my HP 5000. Would this not occur in FM10 and Windows 7? in any case, I solved the issue by using the modern character instead, and printed the book. So far, no one complained...:-) if, and when, I will have to publish a book where access to unicode is a must, then I will consider getting a new machine. And although there are a few things about Windows 7 that I still find annoying, I am overjoyed every day by the *much* faster start up (~30 seconds to boot as opposed to 4-5 minutes under XP), I got into the habit of booting up, then go have a cup a coffee, and by the time I was back, the XP was ready to roll. the absence of blue screen crashes In all the years that I am running XP, this has never happened to me. -- Matanya Ophee Editions Orphée Inc., 1240 Clubview Blvd. N. RE: Automatic ligatures
FM9+ changed the way the UI looks and functions to be more mouse-oriented; people who used keyboard shortcuts have had to adapt a bit to the new UI. From a tech writing point of view, bundling the Technical Communication Suite together provides more ways of generating help output via RoboHelp now. FM9 introduced the book of books concept and folders within books; FM10 doesn't do much more with that. The biggest push is towards structured authoring (DITA and other schemas) and content management systems (CMS). If you've got a spare machine, you can download the free trial play around for 30 days with copies of your docs to see if you like it. You can also run the trial on a an Adobe virtual space online if you don't want to download it. -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Matanya Ophee Sent: Monday, March 26, 2012 1:05 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: Automatic ligatures On 26/03/2012 10:04 PM, Jeff Coatsworth wrote: FYI - FM 10 works fine on WinXP SP3 That's already encouraging. On 26/03/2012 9:20 PM, Roger Shuttleworth wrote: Hi Matanya As others have said, FrameMaker on Windows does not do ligatures; that's because they are not included in the Windows character sets. That is only partially true. Indeed the fi and fl ligatures are not part of the main character set and not accessible with Alt-0xxx numeric keyboard codes, but they do reside at the bottom end of most type 1 and TT fonts with U-xxx accessible codes. Just open the font with Windows' Character map to see this. The fact remains that both QuarkExpress and InDesign found a way to access these characters. I see no reason why FrameMaker cannot accomplish the same. What both QuarkExpress and InDesign also are unable to do is access the ff, ffi and ffl ligatures, since, indeed, these characters are only found in Expert fonts. I could live with just fi and fl, if necessary. Why, then, I do not migrate to these typographically superior programs? because they are deficient on features that are important to me in the production of scholarly books such as footnotes, indexes etc. There is a Quark extension that can do this, but it cost about twice as much as the program itself. So there, I am stuck with FM-8 and expert fonts. The only resource that I am aware of is at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/~hedrick/typography/ http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/%7Ehedrick/typography/ If you go to the bottom of that article, there's mention of a plugin for ligatures, but it appears to be only for FM 6 or 7. Perhaps the author may be able to suggest other resources. Thanks. I'll look into that. Matanya Ophee Editions Orphée Inc., 1240 Clubview Blvd. N. if you have any issues, Adobe's only response will be to advise you to migrate to Windows 7, since that is the OS version that they support FrameMaker 10 on. Fortunately, my experience of Frame support has been better than that. They provided support for our activation issues and they've raised a bug for our crashes when changing CT display settings, both found on WinXP. One person in the group is now on Win7 and still sees the CT display crash, but no-one in Adobe even mentioned us upgrading to Win7.
