That thought crossed my mind as well.

I like FM9. I admit that it took me a while to adjust to the change in the
interface, but I'm used to it now.

If you plan to use DITA, I definitely say upgrade to 9; it handles DITA better
than 8 does.

Re: Pagination problem

2010-04-14 Thread Writer
I assume that the pagination is set to double-sided (ie, left/right). If the
preface has several individual FM documents in it, my guess is that each
document is set to start on the right page, and the text of the troublesome
document ends on a right page. Therefore, FM adds a blank left page so the next
document can start on a right page.

Re: Graphic Elements in Frame 9 Template

2010-04-14 Thread Writer
Pete, on your master pages, are the graphics in an anchored frame? If so, can
you pull them out of the anchored frame, and then delete the anchored frame? I
don't think the graphics will be referenced anymore, but it might resolve your
issue to some degree.

Don't anchor your table to the paragraph or heading. Create a paratag
specifically for tables, and then attach your table to that.

Re: FrameMaker 9 slow and sometimes unresponsive?

2010-04-29 Thread Writer
I've noticed the same issue when I save a file. Usually, it's when I save the
first time after opening FM9 (especially DITA XML files). Even if it is only a
small file.

I agree that the icons on the Paragraph Designer don't map to their actual
meaning. But I've started to become used to them

Other issues that bother me are that FM9 doesn't remember the last
magnification value for DITA XML files, and it opens dialog boxes when I open a
DITA XML file that I had closed previously.

Hi Nadine...

Regarding the document magnification issue .. this is the situation
for all XML in FrameMaker. The magnification (as well as other
document settings) are not saved in the XML, and are reapplied from
the template each time you open a file. You can open the template file
and set the magnification as you like, then save it .. and that will
be what you get.

I've got a plugin called RestoreWindows that does this for you

Also, West Street Consulting has a plugin called Structure Tools that

Re: Paragraphs wrapping prematurely

2010-04-30 Thread Writer
Jill, I had a similar "problem" when I was reformatting a document in FM9.

My monitor is 24" wide, and I had my Files > Preferences set to 24" for the
monitor size.

It turned out that the text looked too far from the right margin only when my
page magnification was greater than 100. At 100, and in print, it looked fine.

RE: Structuring documents (was RE: Adobe's New Corporate Strategies)

2010-04-30 Thread Writer
Albeit, we did it with a two-person team and in small chunks, but we didn't
have an expert for almost any of the process (except taking an introduction
course with Bernard so we could hit the ground speed walking).

We use FM9, which has its own DTD and EDD for DITA. We've learned on our own
how to tweak the EDD according to our own needs.

We converted unstructured to structured manually without automated conversion.

We use FM9 to output our PDFs, and WebWorks ePublisher to create our HTML
output. ePub's DITA FM to HTML works wonderfully well.

We updated/reorganized/rewrote our content ourselves to fit the DITA model.

We had a coop student learn to use DITA within a few weeks while he was also
learning to use FM.

All this while we were also creating new content.

I admit, I put in a lot of hours in last year, and we've made mistakes along
the way, but we've learned from them. All in all, it was well worth it for us.
The proof of the pudding (to management) was when we were able to take a
two-volume documentation set and turn it into a seven-volume set within a
couple of days.

It's not for everyone, I agree. But--I don't know...call it sheer bloody
mindedness--I wanted it badly enough to do it anyway.

I was also going to suggest WebWorks ePublisher. It can ingest FM, Word, and
DITA files (if you have all of the appropriate adapters). In fact, you can
combine all three input formats in the same project.

Can the developers author in Word? Or can you export Word files from the wiki?

Re: Template for four-page brochure?

2012-08-06 Thread Writer
I did something similar with a combination of FM and Adobe Acrobat 8. I
don't have the current version of Acrobat, so I'm not sure if the
settings are the same, but it will give you an idea.

In FM, create your content on 8.5 x 11 pages. The pagination will look linear.

Create a PDF of the FM document. The pagination will still look linear.

In Acrobat, print the PDF to a different booklet PDF by doing the following:

1. Go to File > Print, and then set Page
Scaling to Booklet Printing.

2. Click
OK and give the new PDF a name when you are prompted to do so.

3. If
necessary, open the new PDF.

4. If
necessary, rotate all of the pages in the PDF clockwise 90 degrees.

You might have to play around it the settings a bit to get what you want, but
that's the general idea.

If you can, consider Yves' suggestion about using Mif2Go. If I recall
correctly, it's easier/faster than using conversion tables in FM.

Re: Tips/tools/resources for converting unstructured to structured

Mif2Go user documentation can be found in various formats here:
http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm#Mif2Go_UG

At a place where I used to work, I assigned a junior writer the task of
using Mif2Go to convert some of our smaller documents to DITA. She
figured it out fairly quickly.

For some reason I thought you were converting your source files to DITA,
but in another post you said you're not. I think Mif2Go can convert FM
to non-DITA XML, too. You might want to check the trial version first.

Cheers,

Nadine

Re: Graphics & transparency

2012-09-05 Thread Writer
I have these notes that I made for a project I worked on a while back:

1. Import the image into FrameMaker. It will look like a grey box in
FrameMaker, so it will be tricky to adjust.

2. Select the image and set "Fill" to "None" using the tools palette.

I think I might have found that answer here:

Well, my original answer was a half-baked anyway. I missed some other steps.
This is where I actually got my answer originally:

worked for whatever I was doing at the time.

*sigh* Maybe I should be quiet now.

Anyway, in the end, many tech writers make transparent graphic work. ;-)

Re: Getting started with Context-Sensitive Help

2012-09-24 Thread Writer
I've never used RH to process DITA files, so I can't imagine what the process
is. Do you have to regenerate your FM files each time you update your content?
That sounds very slow and tedious.

>You could go through a similar process using WebWorks ePublisher, as well as
>other Help publishing tools. Typically, you'd embed the marker into the
>topics, and publish through the standard process for that tool.

Scott mentioned WebWorks ePublisher, which processes your DITA files directly.
This is the HAT that I use to create output from DITA.

If your developers have given you a header file with topic aliases, you specify
each topic alias using the othermeta element to define the marker (in
ePublisher) with the value of the topic ID for that topic.

Robert mentioned two ways to handle CSH:

>There are two basic approaches: (1) the developers maintain the map file and
>give it to you to import into RoboHelp, or (2) you generate the map file with
>RoboHelp and give it to them. I've always done (1).

There is another way, which is the developer embeds the HTML file name in the
code. In WebWorks ePublisher, if you want to keep the file name constant (in
case the actual file name of the DITA file changes or becomes obsolete), you
specify file names in the othermeta element to define the marker (in
ePublisher) with the name for the file. For example:

I'm not sure if any of that translates well to what you must do for RoboHelp.

Rick, do you mean what string of characters in the Language list is equal to
those languages?

Looking at Google Translate and Wikipedia, my guess would be:

Slovenian (Slovene) = slovenščina (FWIW, this is not the same as slovenčina,
which is Slovak)

Latvian/Lettish = latviešu

Serbian = српски <-- I don't see it on the FM list

Croatian = Hrvatski

Macedonian = македонски <-- I don't see it on the FM list

Roger, I can have a look at it later with FM10, but what happens if you delete

With an already overloaded group that's about to get smaller, we

require us to do anything special to the FM files beyond moving them to
the current version.

Re: greenfield and new structure

Congrats on the new job, John. Being the master of your own documentation is
pretty awesome, eh?

>etc. Please feel free to reply to me directly with comments not suitable for

>This is going to be fun!

I'm not clear on this. Are you saying that you have DITA files that were
authored somewhere other than in FM, but you WILL be authoring DITA in FM in
the future? If that's the case, EDDs are built into FM. Or did I misunderstand
your question?

If you are authoring DITA in FM, you might want to browse this user
group: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/framemaker-dita/

Learning to author in DITA is not very hard. However, creating output can be
very challenging, and learning to architect your process from beginning to end
BEFORE you get started is very important. Production challenges can mean that
you have to have make certain authoring decision/compromises. Sometimes those
decisions can only be learned through experience, so you might want to check
out lists about your processing tool, if possible. Forgetting about formatting
while you author is also challenging at first, but important. Marking up
content based on its semantic value, rather than for formatting, can take a
while to get used to.

There's so much more that can be said. You're welcome to contact me offline if
you have any questions. I don't use TCS4, so I can't answer RH questions.

I'm pretty sure what I'm about to say is accurate. Someone correct me if I'm
wrong...

You should be able to open those files in FM (make sure you're in structure
mode). You can edit the EDD files and template files to look as close to your
print documentation as you can so that when you generate FM books/files, the
formatting is almost exactly as you need it.

Have you tried just opening the DITA files in FM? If so, did you encounter any
problems?

When I used FM9, I only edited EDD and template files a little bit. I relied on
my processors to format output completely. In the case of production PDFs, that
meant generating FM books/files, and then applying an FM template to the
generate files. Part of the reason for doing it this way was so we could use
the generated FM files in different ways (branded/custom documentation, quick
guides as opposed to full books, etc). BTW, we used WebWorks ePublisher to
create draft PDFs and online help systems. ePublisher ingests ditamaps
directly; you don't have to create FM files first.

Re: greenfield and new structure

Forget about formatting while you author. Learn to separate creating content

One approach (described at a very general level):

1. Create your DITA topics.

2. Create a ditamap for your book/PDF.

3. Create a ditaval file, if you need one.

4. Save your ditamap as an FM book with FM components (or however it works in
FM11). I think you mentioned that you're using DITA FMx? That should help you
build your FM book.

5. Go through your FM book and format the tags that are applied to paragraphs
and characters. Set up your master pages, reference pages, TOC file, index
file, front/backmatter etc.

6. Once you're satisfied with the results, save your formatting as a template.

7. Next time you update your DITA files and recreate your FM book, apply those
templates to the generated FM book files.

Does that make sense?

As for generating HTML, that's going to depend on what processor you use.

This LinkedIn thread mentions several e-books about DITA (not FM). If you're
not familiar with DITA in general, you might find something useful to give you
a basis for using FM as a tool for authoring DITA.

Re: Index not generating as expected

2012-12-15 Thread Writer
I have had a similar problem in the past where the first page of the index
wouldn't format into columns, but anything past the first page would. In that
case, this is what I did:

On the body page of the first page of the index, hold the CTRL key down and
select the frame.

Right-click on the frame.

Choose Object Properties.

In the dialog box that appears, you should be able to turn the side head off
and turn the columns for that page on.

Only if you want to stick with a purely Adobe tool set. WebWorks ePublisher

Laura didn't state what her output requirements are. That should also affect

The subscription expires, but you can still use the software. You just don't
get the four upgrades/year or access to direct support once your subscription
expires.

I must correct myself. When you purchase a *perpetual* license, you can
continue to use ePublisher after your subscription is done.

I recommend that you contact WebWorks' sales department so that you can discuss
your particular needs with them.

IMHO, even though WebWorks ePublisher seems expensive, the time you save on

Re: switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Writer
You could try creating two separate templates (in FM files that are separate
from the book and separate from each other). One template file is 8.5 x 11, and
the other is A4. Both can contain all other attributes (paragraph styles,
character styles, colour definitions, etc). Apply the first template when you
want to create a PDF for the US market. Once that's complete, apply the second
template to the book to create the PDF for the European market.

Alternatively, you could use a processor that ignores your FM settings (that
is, you would set up all your formatting in the processor), and then generate
two different outputs.

The only thing I can think of is conditional text. But you can include your

Yes, definitely.

Something else you can try, but this will really depend how your document is
formatted, is print the PDF at A4 size. Then, using Acrobat, "reprint" the A4
PDF as 8.5 x 11. The fonts might look a bit small, but I used to do that and no
one complained...to me.

Thanks for the link, Alan. I knew that people in Australia and NZ got charged

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but WebWorks ePublisher has Book ePub
2.0 output (you can see a sample of the output here:
http://www.webworks.com/Tour/Output_Formats/) and PDF output. You can generate
both outputs at the same time.

This seems like a great place for this kind of post. You get an occasional

delete any posts you consider inappropriate. Besides, if I was looking to hire

I strongly disagree. I think it's been a long time coming. I want more choices.
I want to be able to see the text in the index dialog box.

Lack of competition does not make a healthy market.

Re: Is there a way to link from a FrameMaker file to a destination in a PDF file?

2013-05-23 Thread Writer
Hi, Duncan:

I also recommend that you ask WebWorks ePublisher questions on the wwp-users
Yahoo Group (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp-users/). If you do, make
sure you state what your input files are (eg, FM 10), what version of
ePublisher you use (eg, 2012.4), and what output you create (eg, Reverb).

However, check out this article on the WebWorks site and see if that answers
your question.
http://www.webworks.com/Support/ePublisher/Legacy_Docs/Tech_Notes/Common/EX_ePub9_Linking_to_PDFs.shtml

Re: Access -> Frame -> pdf. Help with a (fun) project, maybe?

I'm surprised that you can't get your data to export to Word. According to this
article, it should work:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access-help/export-access-data-to-a-word-document-HA010341683.aspx

Alternatively, if you can get HTML out of Access, what about opening it up in
Word? I expect you'd have to have Acrobat to manage the bookmarks.

And unless you're very clever, it's easy to paint yourself into a corner with
an in-house system. It might be "simple" to develop something for what your
needs are now, but you neglect to make it open-ended or scalable for whatever
changes you need to make in the future.

And then there's portability...

Re: Incorporating an existing PDF into an FM-generated PDF

2013-08-29 Thread Writer
You should be able to do part of that with Acrobat. By page numbering, do you
mean the printed page number or the page number in the box at the top of the
Reader frame? If the later, you should be able to do that with Acrobat, too.

FM

Acrobat X
Pro

I need to
incorporate an existing and lengthy PDF file into the PDF file that
I'll generate from the FM content I've written.

At least for the
foreseeable future, it won't be possible to incorporate the source content of
the existing PDF into FM to be able to
generate a single PDF file.

Is it
possible to incorporate that existing PDF , as is, into the PDF that
I'll generate, so that the TOC, page numbering,
etc. will all be there for both PDFs? If
yes, how?

If not, how
would I create a link to that PDF in
FM that will work from the generated PDF?I think I've
done it before, but it's been a long, long
time.

Thanks in
advance!

Lock up templates. Restrict access to source files.

However, having said that, I'm reminded of this quote:

“You can’t make anything idiot proof because idiots are so ingenious.”

Re: Type 1 Helvetica, Internet Explorer, and Windows 7 Incompatible

I thought I might post a solution to
a problem that I encountered recently, since it involves the
Type 1 Helvetica font, and many of us have installed it. I
was having major problems with Internet Explorer (10) not
being able to load many websites. It would load them
partially, not at all, or loaded links would not work.

This drove me nuts for a while as I tried to figure out if I
had a broken flash player or something else going on. I
finally stumbled upon the cause and solution online.
Apparently, Microsoft changed its font rendering engine in
IE 9. That in combination with Windows 7 has done something
to break the ability of IE to render websites that have
 Helvetica specified as a font.

So if you see this problem yourself, the solution is to
uninstall Type 1 Helvetica. Since many of us have PostScript
printers, we have installed this font on our computers. The
recommendation is to replace with a TrueType or OpenType
version instead. The cost of OTF Helvetica is ridiculous,
 though. So hello Arial.

If you create websites, you may want to leave Type 1 fonts
out of your code or your IE visitors may not be able to see
 your site!

Here's a link to a page describing the problem:
