Along with the other suggestions to get the IT nerd to install the
application properly, report the issue to your manager. He/She won't be very
happy if you can't perform the tasks that the company is paying you to do
and should be able to go to the IT group manager and override this clown and
get the issue straightened out.

RE: OFF-FM [Mif2Go] - HTML pages contain wrong links to images

2009-10-21 Thread David Spreadbury
Mathiue,
I periodically run into this problem. What I have done to correct it is to
delete the three Mif2Go generated configuration files, mif2go.ini,
projectname.lst, and projectname.prj and rerun the Setup Mif2Go step (File >
Setup Mif2Go).

The aa, ab, etc., are references to the chapters. For instance, typically,
aa reflects Chapter 1, ab Chapter2, etc., and should be listed in the
mif2go.ini file.

I am sure that Jeremy will jump in with a more accurate solution, as soon as
they wake up.

Hi all,

I do not know if a forum dedicated to Mif2Go issues exists, so I am posting
my request here.

I am using FM7.2 and Mif2Go on 64-bit Vista (no comment).

HTML pages generated by Mif2Go contain links to images such as
"C:/EclipseHelpFolder/aa0fxxx.jpg". The problem is that I do not have any
"aa0fxxx.jpg" images in my folder, only "0fxxx.jpg", and as a result images
won't display. Where does this "aa" prefix come from? Is this a .ini conf
problem?

Thank you all for your support,

Mathieu.

RE: FM 9 vs. InDesign

2009-10-22 Thread David Creamer
I have two PDFs:

One comparing InDesign CS4, FrameMaker 9, and QuarkXPress 8
<http://www.ideastraining.com/PDFs/SelectingDTPprogram_v2.pdf>

The older one comparing InDesign CS3, FrameMaker 8, and QuarkXPress 7
<http://www.ideastraining.com/PDFs/SelectingDTPprogram.pdf>

What program one chooses greatly depends on the type of projects one will
work on. If one is working on a large variety of projects--such as books,
newsletters, brochures, and proposals--I would look hard at InDesign. If
strictly working with larger book-type projects, one has to look at the
features of each program vs. what is needed (such as typographic quality or
column-spanning heads).

Another thing to look at is the equipment one has; typically InDesign
requires more computing power and RAM to run smoothly compared to
FrameMaker.

RE: Conditional Text - Best Practices

2009-10-26 Thread David Spreadbury
Using your example, two sentences, translation or not. The sentences are
different enough that it would be real confusing if all conditions were
turned on.

If it were simply a different product name, without translation, then one
sentence.

Translation, in my mind, would dictate having separate sentences. Send each
version of the book to the translator with the proper instructions to
translate book1 into French, book 2 into Spanish, or whatever. Eliminates
errors by the translation outfit.

I have just completed my first Frame manual (conversion from Word to FM9)
and am now beginning to create Conditional markers for a second product
within the same manual (this will eventfully become 4 products).

All of our manuals are translated into at least 6 other languages, so my
question is:

When creating conditional text should I always create a second version of a
sentence, or should I simply create conditional clauses or words within the
sentence?

For example, instructions for product one might begin "Tap the touch screen
Menu button." while the equivalent instruction for the second product would
be "Press the console MENU button."

Taking into account that translation will occur, would best practices
dictate the creation of one step with 2 conditions? Or 2 sentences, one for
each condition?

If anyone has experience in this particular area I would appreciate your
thoughts - and horror stories of what to avoid at all costs.

RE: Mif2Go: LOT and LOF accessible by search in HTML Help output

Jim,
Just remove the generated files from the book before setting up Mif2Go.
Mif2Go can create the generated files selected if you so choose in the setup

This is a weird one -- any clues would be appreciated.

I'm generating HTML Help using Mif2GO and two conditionalized Frame 9
books. I don't want the LOT or LOF in the outputs, so I've set
UseFrameGenFiles=No.

Nevertheless, when I search for terms such as "figure" or "table" in the
Help, the returned list of topics may or may not include a List of
Figures or List of Tables chapter. For one of the books, this does not
happen at all. For the oher book, if I set conditions one way, I see the
LOT in the output but not the LOF; if I set them another way, I see the
LOF but not the LOT.

Any ideas?

Hello All,

After finishing a book we used the Zenserve Book Store Plug-in for FM to
pull a copy of all files, including images used in the book, and place
them into a new folder, Book Store would do this no mater where the
original file was saved and would maintain all cross-references and image
links in the new copy of the book.

This copy could then be sent to translators or printers with no font or
missing link issues. A copy is also saved into an archive system separate
from our working files.

Unfortunately, Zenserve appears to be out of business, so as we replace
our computers we can no longer get new licences to reinstall the plug-in.

Would any of you have a recommendation for a replacement to Book Store?
Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

2009-11-25 Thread David Spreadbury
Lynn,
I haven't upgraded to FM9, yet. It might happen in the near future though.

In all the upgrades I have done with FrameMaker in the past, to get your
documents updated just open and save. Everything should work just fine.

As far as those members of your team that are staying on an earlier release,
you would need to do a SaveAs FM7.x any documents that you send to them. You
would need to do this each and every time, so getting everyone on the same
version as soon as possible would save you some work. Also, if you use any
of the new features of FM9, you will lose them when you SaveAs FM7.x.

I don't use WebWorks, but if memory serves me, every time you upgrade FM you
upgrade WebWorks. This can get pretty expensive if you have a lot of users.

Hi,

My company is considering upgrading our FrameMaker from 7.1p114 to 9
(yippee, we've never upgraded before!).

We're all running Win XP.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but do we open our v7.1 FM files in
v9 and then save them as v9? Or is it more complicated than that?

Once our FM files are saved as v9, can any users still using v7.1 still
read them (there's a chance our counterpart US office won't get the
upgrade to v9)? Or would we need to save back as v7 for those rare
occasions? Are there any known issues with doing this?

We currently using WebWorks (WebWorks > AutoMap 2003 Client within FM
menu) to produce CHM files. Will this be affected if we upgrade to v9?

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that
are released?

Any other tips for upgrading?

Can anyone confirm that v7.1 is no longer supported by Adobe?

Thanks very much in advance for your help,
Lynn

RE: Import external file by reference

2009-12-08 Thread David Spreadbury
The only drawback to linking to an external file from within FrameMaker, or
any application for that matter, is that the linked file must remain in the
same relative folder relationship to the source file. Once you deliver the
source document to your customer, typically as a PDF or possibly in an HTML
Help format, you can't guarantee this relationship will be maintained. Once
the relationship is broken the link no longer works.

Hello -- We're very interested in any input on our tentative plans to
switch from WWPro to RoboHelp for our ongoing context-sensitive HTML
Help projects. In particular, we'd like to know any of your experiences
using RoboHelp 8 on multiple book sets that include large, complex books
(2,000+ pages, thousands of images, hundreds of cross-references and
hypertext links, etc.).

Our software product's UI Help buttons call topic alias markers which
are included in the HTML output, based on markers that we've embedded
throughout the content of our Frame books.

We're currently using WWP and encountering new problems with each patch
they release. The product is proving too unstable for us to move forward
with.

Any thoughts on taking on a conversion from WWPro to RoboHelp? Our
output has to be HTML, and it needs to be able to use some sort of topic
alias marker system so the product's Help calls from various GUI's will
be context-sensitive and open the correct topic in the HTML Help system.
We assume that this would entail us upgrading to the latest Adobe
Communications Suite. We're currently on Frame 8.

Thanks for any and all advice.

OK, noob alert. What is the preferred way of creating text callouts so that
they are anchored to a figure, i.e., if the figure is moved down or up a few
lines, the callouts move with it?

I import a graphic by reference. I create text in a text frame selected from
the Graphics Toolbar, and position it. I then add a line return above it,
and of course the graphic moves down but the callout stays "floating" in its
original position.

2009-12-17 Thread David Spreadbury
Not to beat this horse much further into the ground, but why would I place a
callout to an item in a graphic outside the frame containing the graphic?

Obviously, if I place the callout outside the frame containing the
illustration, there is not binding of the callouts and the illustration. If I
place the callouts inside the graphic frame containing the illustration I can
then bind them together as one object, after grouping. Then I don't care what
happens outside the graphic frame, everything in the frame stays together.

If I understand the original poster's process, importing a graphic
with an insertion point in text creates an anchored frame. This is why
the graphic flows with the text.

It shouldn't be necessary to group text lines or text frames with the
graphic in the anchored frame, for the callouts to move with the
anchored frame; the callouts just need to inside the anchored frame.
The best way to assure that they are is to be sure that the mouse
pointer is inside the boundary of the anchored frame when you drag the
callout, then release the mouse. To select the text frame callout,
press Ctrl when you point the mouse over the text frame; this changes
the cursor to a graphic pointer. When the text frame is selected, you
can release Ctrl and just drag the callout inside the anchored frame
boundary. You can position the callouts within the anchored frame by
dragging, or by selecting and using the arrow keys to move by one
pixel per key press, or use Shift+arrow keys to move by five pixels.

RE: Mif2Go Help?

2010-01-14 Thread David Spreadbury
I would imagine the only way to accomplish this is to combine all of the
Frame chapters into one file and then use Mif2Go to process one RTF file. If
you look through the Mif2Go User's Guide, para 17.2.3 recommends this for
HTML output, when only one HTML file is desired.

You will wind up with one horrendous RTF file, but if that is what you want,
that is what you will get.

As Art pointed out, Word does have a Master Document scheme, but I would
rather go through root canal surgery than use it.

Well, just addressing one of the issues, you need to concatenate the
FM files in some way before you MIF2GO them for the output. (Isn't
there some kind of Word multi-file tool?)

Either create a new "container" file and import each chapter as a text

2010-01-19 Thread David Spreadbury
Nancy,
You don't mention the tool you are using to generate your HTML. If you're
using Mif2Go, check out para 20.5.6 in the Mif2Go User's Guide.

Hi, all.

This is not a question about how to create a custom bullet -- I know how to
do it and it is well explained in the FrameMaker online help.

My question is, is it possible to create a square bullet format in
FrameMaker 7.1 that will translate correctly to HTML?

7.1 doesn't support Unicode fonts, correct? Is there a tried-and-true method
short of using a bitmap image for the square bullet?

Thanks for all suggestions.

Re: Even/Odd Page Layout Issue

2010-01-19 Thread David Schor
Hi Alison,

Where is your End of Flow marker located?
On each page of the document, do a Select All On Page (Ctrl+A) to see
if any additional elements (e.g. graphics frame with invisible border)
are on the pages.
Check whether there is an additional text flow in the doc (perhaps you
have an empty graphics frame or text inset that overlaps the master
page text column, meaning that is not apparent if you are not
searching for it. Perhaps there is a table that ends flush at the
bottom of the page pushing the next line to the next page.

RE: Software recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread David Spreadbury
What is wrong with working in your current version of FrameMaker, which you
don't mention, so I am going to assume 7.2.

What is wrong with creating the PDFs straight out of FrameMaker?

Mif2Go can handle your online help problem. It produces several different
flavors of Online Help, from Windows Compiled HTML (CHM) to Oracle Help for
Java (cross-platform), to Omni Help (Web HTML Help), and the cost won't
break your budget. You can download and play with their eval version at
www.omsys.com.

As others have pointed out, you can, with a little work, manage the CMS part
manually.

Subject: OT: Software recommendations

Hello All

I just started a new job at a software company whose product is very
GUI-intense. User assistance is crucial, and our legacy versions use online
Help that opens in a separate browser window. Management seem to be very
open to the idea of embedded help, etc. in upcoming versions, and they are
very serious about good UI design - so I'm hoping I'll be able to promote
embedded help in the future.

In the past the Help was created in RoboHelp 7 and existed separately from
any PDF output, but in the future I can see us also creating well-designed
PDFs, single-sourcing the PDF and the Help, and maybe also training
materials. There will also be about four software packages with different
sets of features (so some form of inclusion/exclusion mechanism will be
needed.

I'm looking for recommendations as to which software package(s) to use. My
inclination is to get TCS2, single-source in FrameMaker, and then push to
RH. I'm pretty savvy with structured FM (though not v.9.0).

Before I leap for TCS2, I wonder if there are other possibilities. We do not
need XML as yet, though it may be a remote possibility down the road). I've
also thought about using XML and the DITA-OT, but the PDF output is probably
not good enough and there will be issues with file management in the absence
of a content management system.

Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks for your help.

Hi, everyone.

I posted this question to techwr-l about a week ago but received no replies.
I'm hoping that some Framers may have experience they can share.

We currently store all figures in Windows Explorer directories, and import
by reference into FrameMaker documents. We figure a database would eliminate
our current, frequent duplication of files and confer other benefits as
well.

But I don't understand how a db and FM interact. Is it possible to import a
figure by reference into a FrameMaker file from a database? Can you point to
a db directory the way you would to a regular Windows Explorer directory?

Thanks.

RE: Small caps in the middle of a cross reference

2010-01-26 Thread David Spreadbury
Jenny,
You might be looking to fix the problem in the wrong area.

I went and experimented with applying a SmCaps Character Tag to a word in an
existing cross-reference and then I updated my cross-references.

The word came across as SmCaps while the remainder of the cross reference
retained the default xref font.

The boss has decreed that the product names will appear in small caps.

I have a couple of cross references that refer to chapter titles containing
these product names. Although the name is in small caps in the chapter
title, it is not in small caps in the cross reference. The references are
"Chapter 2, Get started with MyProduct" and "Chapter 7, Use MyOtherProduct".

I poked at the manual and the CR dialog a bit. The manual tells you how to
add character formatting, but only to the X-ref as a whole. I just need
small caps for one word.

I can put up with any sort of workaround, since it's only two and it's very
important to my employer.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

RE: global header change?

2010-01-29 Thread David Spreadbury
Ken,
Updating the variables in one chapter, and then importing the variables into
all other chapters in the book, should fix your problem.
I work on documents for telecommunications equipment/software. Our
template/EDD is developed around TCIF Guide which uses a separate file as a
repository for all system/user variables. We make changes there and then
import them to all chapters in the book. This way even variables used in
headers/footers are updated.

Wow, this thread goes back TWO months.

Well, first, thanks, Diane, for the tip. I'll try your suggestion to see
what I can get done on the existing manual I described at the time so that I
can simply use that book for a modified machine with a different name
(hydraulic excavator, drill rig, etc).

Second, a few weeks ago, I finally delved into creating and defining a
"ProductName" variable for the various section headers of a brand new manual
and it (using a FrameMaker variable) works beautifully!

One thing that I'm not crazy about, however, is that find-and-replace does
not check headers / footers, thus preventing me from making any product name
or other changes that way..

There is a plug-in that can convert MIF files to ID (from dtptools.com).
Of course, with any conversion, there will be some clean up work.

Most people think that ID cannot work with large documents, but I was
recently conversing with users that have produced documents over 2000 pages.

I have a PDF that compares IDCS4, Frame 9, and Quark 8.1:

You can always use ISO9660 format. Roxio has Roxio Creator 2010 which
should do this.

But on the whole, no, there are very few Windows programs that will
format HFS+ format, if any. Windows programs are inherently limited and
narrow visioned as far as format is concerned.

Of course the Mac you are using is probably around 10 years old. Amazing
how long it functioned isn't it? And if it is that old it probably
relies on Appletalk. A more recent OS would integrate seamlessly into
your ethernet.

When I change to the setting of "Print Book As: Single Print Job" I am

selection and have the file name be that of the .fm file and not a
combination of the book and chapter file name by default. To further
this it would be real nice if this could be accomplished in silent mode
i.e., I am not bother with the naming of the individual files. In
reality there are many more files and over time this is going to be a

You don't mention whether you are using Structured or Unstructured. In a

This will either be simple or impossible to fix, but either way, I'm

I've created a cross reference that allows me to refer to a specific step

My instructions are defined as follows:

The Scripts panel can run compiled or uncompiled AppleScripts (files with

Is it true that nDesign supports VB scripting? Is the handling of a
document model any better than that for Word? What I mean is, in Maker you
can us the API to get all the text items in a paragraph, and that breaks the
pgf into all the char format changes, all the table anchors, aframe anchors,
xrefs, etc. Trying to get that kind of detail about your content in Word is
miserabl, as far as I can tell. So the question is (yes, on the surface
this is off topic), how does Indesign expose its content to VB? Does
anybody have any experience?

And to get on topic, would it be reasonable to have a VB tool that can stuff
ID content into Maker (and vis-versa)?

FrameScript/ script to convert mif>fm

2010-03-08 Thread Anton David
Hello,

I am trying to use Framescript to accelerate conversion of a set of mif

There is a script in FrameScript called DirSaveAsMif.fsl, but it saves into
mif. Does anyone knows how to modify it in order to convert mif files into
fm?

Thank you for helping

one of many freeware file renaming tools to rename your mif to fm.

I also looked at the DZBatcher utility. It looks like it will do exactly
what you want. All it would take is to build a little batch file to open and
save all of your mif files as Frame files.

If all you are doing is renaming the file, then just open a Command Prompt
window, go to the directory and do a "rename *.mif *.fm" and that will
handle them all.

Of course, make a backup of the files into another directory first! :)

 Dear Framers,

Many thanks for all people who kindly asnwered to my query.
I followed the advise of David Spreadbury : just renamed the file from .mif
to .fm and opened them in FrameMaker, then used the command Save all open
files and saved them as .fm. The rest is just clicking OK and Overwrite to
Save the file. Make sure you set the mouse cursor to automatically go to the
predefined button (in Control Pnale > Mouse).

Re: Semi-OT: Tool for modular doc, multiple import/export

2010-03-19 Thread David Farbey
Hello Dale,

Try searching for a "component content management system" as I think that's
the closest industry term to what you are looking for. I believe there are a
number of tools that may fit the bill, at least when it comes to importing
and storing text data from various formats.

You use the terms "import" and "export" which to me imply some element of
processing or conversion. Many content management systems use more neutral
terms such as "store" and "retrieve" which don't imply any processing. I'm
sure that if you store an FM file it will still be an FM file when you
retrieve it, but I suspect it may be difficult to find a tool (other than FM
Server, perhaps) that can "export" or generate FM files from other content.

You may find that the ideal tool is far too expensive, or far too difficult
to integrate into your company's existing systems, and so you'll need to
develop your own hybrid solution, with some sort of shared storage with
library features (check-in and check-out control0 and versioning, but with
you own procedures and workflows. (An example of this sort of content
management system is Alfresco, http://www.alfresco.com).

There are limits to what software tools can achieve, however. The most
difficult decision you and your colleagues need to make is defining what you
consider a "component" or "module" to be.

David Farbey

I am condensing a bunch of repeated table content into 2 or 3 tables. Due to
the data format and my page size, I would like to use Landscape format
tables in a Portrait format manual.

Using my Scriptorium book, I played around with their instructions but that
actually made the entire Appendix Landscape which is not what I want/need as
there will be a some regular title/text content that should be Portrait
style, including the Appendix Heading.

My book files use Master Pages set up with right and left pages (these were
configured by a contractor as I didn't have the experience to set this up on
my own). I understand the concepts of what was done but perhaps not all the
details which is why I tried the Scriptorium book to sort this out.

I think what I need are several text flows within the Appendix so that I can
format the "table text flows" as Landscape but leave the rest of the
document (including all Headers and Footers) as Portrait.

I've thought about using Text Insets to bring in the tables but I'm not sure
how I would insert them in Landscape format - although I think I could
create them that way in my existing Text Inset file.

FYI: I use table titles before the table (to which the table is anchored). I
type in the title and format it with a Table Para tag that numbers the table
based on Chapter/Appendix and the table number within the Chapter/Appendix
(eg, Table 3-1: xxx, Table B-4: xxx).

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi all,

I am experiencing an odd problem with numbering. I have two types of chapter
numbers: appendices and regular chapters. The appendices are numbered by
letters (A, B, C, D) and the regular chapters are numbered numerically
(1,2,3).

L:.< =0>< =0>< =0>< >< >< >< >\t
A:Appendix :< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>< >< >< >< >

In all my books, I have all frame files set to "Continue Numbering from
previous chapter in book". Since they are different number series, they
shouldn't affect one another and in all but one of my books they do not. In
one of my books it seems to matter and I don't know why. My first appendix
starts at "D" instead of "A". Its as if as there's two appendices preceding
this first framemaker file but I know there is not. Any ideas on what's
going on? I can do a quick fix by simply restarting the chapter number on
that file but I am curious as to why this would occur in the first place.

Thanks,
Joseph Lorenzini

Re: Changing font when translating to Japanese

2010-03-26 Thread David Farbey
Hi Verner,

I hope I'm not missing something important here, but I think the answers to
some of your questions are quite straightforward:

1. You can use the Paragraph Designer to change the font, for all the
relevant paragraph tags.
2. If your book has multiple chapters use Import> Formats to copy Paragraph
Designer settings from one chapter to all chapters.
3. The only people who can tell you which fonts to use are your translators
or editors.

You also need to discuss your other questions with your translators, editors
and project managers, as they will probably know what works in your
particualr situation.

Hope this helps,

David

David

RE: Special character as bullet

2010-04-02 Thread David Spreadbury
Nina,
I knew I saved my Frame 5.5 User's Guide for a reason. The original
FrameMaker books went into much more detail than the newer versions.

The 5.5 User's Guide has the following procedure to use a special bullet
symbol:
To use a special bullet symbol:

1. Create a character format that uses the font of the bullet symbol you
want to use. For example, to use 9-point Zapf Dingbats, create a character
format using that font. Give the format a descriptive name such as
BulletFont.

For information on creating character formats, see "Creating new formats".

2. Display the Numbering properties of the Paragraph Designer and enter the
character corresponding to the bullet symbol you want in the Autonumber
Format text box (rather than select the symbol in the Building Blocks scroll
list).

For example, if you want a Zapf Dingbat square bullet, enter the lowercase
letter n, which appears as () in that font. To find the character that
corresponds to the bullet symbol you want, see the character set for that
font (see the online manual FrameMaker Character Sets for the character sets
for the Symbol and Zapf Dingbats font).

3. Click the tab symbol (\t) in the Building Blocks scroll list or enter
spaces.

Note: You may have to use special codes to enter characters such as
nonbreaking spaces or em spaces. For information, see Appendix A, "Typing in
Dialog Boxes."

4. In the Character Format scroll list, click the bullet character format
that you created.

5. Click Apply to Selection.

Subject: Special character as bullet

I want to create a paragraph style for bullets, but I want to use a
pointing finger instead of a traditional black dot for the bullet. I'm
in Framemaker 7 (unstructured), and my beloved Framemaker 7 guide says,
"Another way to set up bullets involves taking advantage of the
character formatting that's available. You can, for example create a
character format that applies Zapf Dingbats or Wingdings font, and then
use one of the dingbats or wingdings to make a special bullet (such as
diamonds or pointing hands)."

This is exactly what I want to do! Unfortunately, the paragraph ends
there and doesn't explain how to do it. :-(

I have the Character_Sets.pdf file open from my Online Manuals
directory, and it looks like the pointing hand is the dingbats graphic
for Hex code \x2b. (If, that is, I'm reading this right, which may not
be the case.) But that's also the hex code for the "plus" sign. I can
create a bullet that uses that plus sign, but I don't know how to make
the jump to the pointing hand.

I guess I could create a character style for dingbats and manually type
the character for the pointing hand ... but then I would need to change
the font manually (I think) for the rest of the text.

My question: How do I create a paragraph style that will make the hand
appear as a bullet, but will allow me to type any additional text in my
usual font (in this case, Times New Roman)?

I'm sure I could figure this out eventually, but it's Friday and my
brain is fried ... and I really want to get this format in place before
I leave today.

Thanks so much for your help.

Nina Rogers (still feeling like a Framemaker newbie after all these
years)

double-quotes, you will get a log of hits that explain the Frame 8 features.
I tried it with "framemaker 9 boolean" and got almost as many.

Between these you should be able to gather sufficient justification for
upgrading to frame 9.

I am running 7.2, 8, and an eval of 9 and haven't found any issues when
saving as a previous version, a 9 document back to 8, back to 7.2. The big
issue there is that any 9=specific features will be dropped when going to 8,
and 8=specific features are dropped when going to 7.2, which should be
expected.

Subject: Adobe information on conditional text enhancements in 8.x / 9.x,
feedback, compatibility issues

Hi,
I'm currently using Adobe FrameMaker 7.2.

I'd like to upgrade to Adobe FrameMaker 9.x but am seeking more information
first (for upgrade justification to management). I seem to recall that
there was a whitepaper or other explanation type of document (written by
Adobe) that described the BOOLEAN style conditional text setting
enhancements that were done in FM 8.x. Does anyone happen to know where I
can get that document (or another similar one applicable to 9.x?)?

Does anyone know whether FM documents are completely compatible (open fine
without down saving) between 8.x and 9.x? I seem to recall there's an
incompatibility issue (which means files have to be down saved) between 5.x
and 7.x and again between 7.x and 9.x but am wondering if the same issue
exists between 8.x and 9.x.

I'd also appreciate any general feedback (positive OR negative) that people
want to share on FM 9.x.

Thanks,
Melissa

RE: Strategy for Handling Conditional Text

2010-04-12 Thread David Spreadbury
I have been following this thread with interest. I, personally believe that
conditional text would solve your problem, but, I was recently involved in
documenting a software application that was targeted for Windows and Unix.
The client did not want to use conditional text. So, we were left with
creating separate sections for Unix and Windows, only where there were
functional differences. This primarily occurred with installation and
maintenance, i.e., backup, restore, type procedures. Our solution was to
document the platform-specific procedures consistently in the same order.
The installation section would document the Unix-specific procedures
followed by the Windows procedures. The same was true whenever this
situation arose. The headings were, usually, identical except to refer to
the platform; "Installing on Unix" followed by "Installing on Windows". I
worked out very nice.

The big advantage of doing it this way is production of one document instead
of two, which made follow-on maintenance was much easier; only one book to
muck with.

Just a second opinion.

Generally I agree, but I think in this specific case the application
that Joe is documenting really varies between Linux and Windows. At
least, that's what I gathered from: "Originally, I was told that these
differences would eventually go away and that the user experience
would be identical on both operating systems. This hasn't happened.
The differences have grown."

In this case, I think it's best to *advocate* for the generic approach
but until it's achieved on the application side conditions are likely
the best solution. As the applications become more similar, the
conditioned document can be generalized and conditions removed for
those general portions.

Re: TCS install; missing fonts

2010-04-22 Thread David Spreadbury
Stuart,
I would wager that your maker.ini, of your previous install, was modified to
recognize these "missing fonts". If you still have the old installation on your
system check the [WindowsToFrameFontAliases] section of the maker.ini file.
Copy the section and paste it into your current version. Oh ya, always make a
copy of your existing maker.ini before changing it.

Win XP SP3
FM 7.0 p579
TCS 2.0 (FM 9.0 p250)

I recently installed TCS and now when I open existing .fm files in either FM 9
or FM 7, I get missing fonts messages.  I have made no changes to my system's
fonts, so I assume TCS has done so.  So far, the "missing" fonts are simply
variant names of existing fonts, e.g., "can't find Lucida Bright Semi Bold,
using Lucida Bright Demi Bold".  Same thing for the italic variants, etc.

I searched my hard drive for "Lucida" and find dozens of copies of these font
files in Program Files subfolders called \Adobe, \Java, and \Hewlett-Packard.
(But XP's Search and Void Software's "Everything" search engine *don't* find
the dozen or so entries that exist in C:\Windows\Fonts.)

I've assumed I'm safe to use the usual method to get rid of the 'missing fonts'
messages, but I'd like to know what exactly happened here and why.  Anyone know?

Thanks,

Re: folder structure

2010-05-18 Thread David Spreadbury
Tim,
I would expect that the concensus will be to create the folder structure that
fits your way of thinking and what will work for your documents.

Initially I would gather all of the relevant pieces into a clean structure and
Bruce Foster's Archive is the tool to collect and assemble all of the pieces.

One gotcha you are going to run into is cross-references. A nice thing about
Archive is that it fixes them during it's slight of hand. Very useful tool
that, for me anyhow, has more than paid for itself. I think it is still going
for $20, but don't hold me to that.

If you feel the need, then move the product specific stuff to sub-folders in
the archived tree.

Then you will have to rebuild all cross-references to the specific stuff
manually. Links to graphics should be okay, but if graphic links to the
specific stuff do break, fixing the first one should fix all for that specific
product.

I inherited a book with chapters and files in a complex directory structure. We
are changing from one version-control software to another, so now would be a
good time to change the folder structure.

The complex structure makes it difficult to check out all the files in a  book
at once. It seems to me that it would be easier to have files that are common
across products in a common files folder, and to have all the rest of the .FM
files for each product/FM book in a single folder, with images in an adjacent
folder.

I am wondering if there are recommendations for file structure, and what are
the gotchas I'm likely to encounter if I move things around.

Thanks. tims

Conditional Text problem on Frame 7.1 on Win XP Professional

2007-09-04 Thread David Schor
Is there a bug or limitation regarding FrameMaker Conditional Text Tag names?
I received a base document with several different conditions
reflecting various model names within the same product family.
Examples of tag names are:

ABC2024
ABC224D
ABC208
ADE208
ADE224
AFG208
and so on

After setting the system to show the first ABC condition but hide the
latter two, I generated Help files in Webworks but the other ABC
conditions showed.

In an experiment, I changed one of the conditions to ABC_208, and lo
and behold, ABC_208 stayed hidden. However, ABC224D remains in the
document when it shouldn't. According to this pattern, would I have to
change this to ABC__224D for FM to recognize the difference?

And what if I need to add additional variations to a name like
ABC2024G and ABC2024F? Does Frame not recognize the difference?

Hope you can help me,

Thanks,
David

looking for conditional text scenarios

2007-10-10 Thread David Valiulis
Greetings,

Here at Adobe we're looking for real-world uses of conditional text.
We'd be very interested in a summary of some of the interesting uses out
there, including the condition tags you've defined and the output
desired. We'd also like to hear of any limitations you've encountered in
either Frame 7 or Frame 8.

For example, you might say...
"I work on a doc set that must output to print and to the web in two
different versions, Mac and Windows. We've set up 6 conditions:
WinPrint, WinWeb, WinBoth, MacPrint, MacWeb, and MacBoth."

Many thanks.

RE: Framers Digest, Vol 25, Issue 4

2007-11-05 Thread David Artman
Hi, all; long time no post!

I have an unusual question about PDF generation that I hope this list
can answer.

For a gaming product (role-playing, not computer), we want to be able to
embed ad banners which are refreshed every time the PDF is opened, every
time a page is turned, in the footer of the book. Those refreshes would
pull the banners from a standard ad revolver (like Google Ads), thereby
generating an ad view with a unique IP (per user/reader), thereby
generating ad revenue to pay for the free PDF hosting (with maybe some
left over for the author).

The first idea I had is much more limited: have the PDF distilled by the
server for each download, which would embed whatever ads are queued in
the ad revolver, BUT the ads would then be static and fixed PLUS the ad
request would always be from the server doing the distillation (i.e.
worth less revenue; possibly even none).

The second idea is more "active," but it doesn't solve the sever-only ad
request problem: I thought of having the footer contain an embedded,
URL-referenced image on the server, which is refreshed (server-side)
after each HTTP request, thus changing the ad every page (good) but
which would result in the requests always being made from the same
server (bad to worthless).

In summary: I need a way to embed active, URL-referenced content which
causes an HTTP request for an ad banner FROM the end-user machine IP,
tagged such that it credits the PDF-hosting author (for payment), EVERY
page turn (i.e. every page render in Reader).

Impossible?

trouble adding extra line to master page header

I need to modify a master page header.

The modification includes adding a 2nd line to the header and inserting

I can expand the background text frame and insert the variable.

The problem is that the blue line that was below the 1st header line now

I need to delete it, but I can't seem to grab it.

Any tips?

Can you explain how they MADE you spend you money again?

Full Suite Price: $1599 US
Full FrameMaker Price: $899
Suite Upgrade: $999

Call Adobe and talk to a manager to see if you can upgrade from your current
Frame 8. (Since the Frame in the Suite is slightly modified, technically
your version is a "previous" version). That way, you are only out $300.

Help with Running Headers

2007-11-13 Thread David Kuhn
I am running into a problem inserting a running header.

It is for a book organized into parts.

One of the master pages must include a header row containing the Part
number and Part name above the Chapter number and Chapter name.

I tried to insert a Running Header 5, just changing the definition that
exists from <$paratext[H1_Heading1]> to <$paratext[Part]>.

There is already a Part paragraph format defined, but it exists only in
the Part document type, not the Chapter document type.

But when I switch from the Master Pages view to the Body Pages view,
this line does not appear at all.

OT: Acrobat Displays Banner Off-Screen

2007-11-19 Thread David Spreadbury
Running into a wierd problem which seems to only appear on one or four systems.

All four systems running Acrobat 8.1.1 on Windows XP SP2. PDFs are being
created from FrameMaker 7.2 with Distiller 8.

If I open a PDF on my system, the PDF displays fine. Banner page displays
within the viewable area of my monitor.

If the user who is experiencing the problem opens the same PDF, the monitor
display has the Acrobat banner up under the top-most region of the display.
Clicking the bottom edge of the displayed PDF drops the banner down enough to
grab it and manually position it correctly.

Any ideas what could be causing this behavior?
Is there a specific Preferences setting in Acrobat that could be causing this?

This was a questions I answered recently for Layers Magazine--it concerns
InDesign and FrameMaker, but I will discuss QuarkXPress at the end:

Q: I¹m trying to decide between InDesign and FrameMaker for producing my
books. Any advice?
A: Both programs are very good for producing books, but generally, InDesign
is better graphically, while FrameMaker is better in some specialized (but
important) areas. For example, Frame has conditional text (hide/show text),
multiple indices, more advanced XML support, track changes*,
cross-referencing**, document compare, built-in equation editor**,
cross-column headlines, and table footnotes. InDesign excels in the graphics
area, including native Illustrator and Photoshop import with full
transparency support, built-in transparency and Photoshop-like effects, the
standard Adobe pen tool, color management, multi-media support, and better
PDF export. Features that are more-or-less equal include table styles,
variables, numbered lists, anchored graphics, and overall text formatting. I
should also mention that InDesign is cross-platform, while FrameMaker not
available on the Mac.

*Available in InDesign using InCopy
**Available in InDesign as third-party plug-in

Comparing QuarkXPress to InDesign...
Quark's tables are very limited, it does not do numbered lists or footnotes
natively, it's text formatting/editing is not as capable, and it does not
have variables (or any of the above mentioned Frame features).

This comparison is not meant to be complete. Feel free to contact me if you
have any other questions about the three programs.

Are you referring to XPress tags, Synchronized Text/Shared Content, or XML
tags?

XPress tags, for the most part, are for inserting codes for formatting and
indexing info. As far as I know, it does not have a feature that works
similar to the FrameMaker or InDesign variables.

Shared Content is useful, but not the same way as Frame/ID variables. Text
content is for an entire Item (a.k.a. Frame or Object), not for in-line
text.

If XML, the same general process can also work with Frame and InDesign.

Can you clarify your usage of Quark Tags as variables?

InDesign can import and work with XML data similar to FrameMaker, but I
don't think ID handles it as well as Frame (yet).

ID does not do straddled text like Frame, so while you could automate text,
a table, or a graphic being imported into an anchored frame/object, the type
would not flow the same as it does in Frame. (ID flows top-to-bottom,
left-to-right; Frame will split the flow above-and-below the straddled
element.)

Quark, InDesign, and FrameMaker all have a similar book feature.
There are differences in what they can sync however, based on what features
they provide. For example, Quark cannot sync master pages, while Frame and

Re: Problems importing Illustrator files

2007-12-07 Thread David Creamer
If you are using transparency in Illustrator, I would save your graphics out
as either EPS or PDF 1.3 for FrameMaker.

EPS and PDF 1.3 do not support transparency, so the art will be flattened.
As long as you use the default settings, it will include the original AI
file, so you can open the file to edit it later.

Be sure to use the High Resolution settings when flattening.

If you use any higher PDF settings (during a Save As), the PDF will maintain
any transparency and may not work properly.

For older programs, EPS will work just as good, since the programs usually
convert the PDF into an EPS internally. Plus, it is easier to manage in AI.

Recommended format for importing vector graphics

2007-12-08 Thread David Bills
All,

My department generates vector graphics in Illustrator CS2 and imports them
into Frame 7.2 as EPS. Recently, we've considered importing our graphics as
PDF because it (1) provides a full preview instead of a TIFF preview and (2)
the Illustrator PDF file size is smaller than the EPS file size.

Are there any other advantages or disadvantages to importing Illustrator
graphics as PDF instead of EPS that we're not considering?

Thanks in advance,

David Bills

corrupted paragraph format from 7.2 to 8

2008-01-14 Thread David Kuhn
I have a problem when someone with version 8 uses the template I created
with version 7.2.
The Bullet level two does not appear as a round bullet. It appears as an
open quotation mark.
Any ideas what is causing that and how to fix it?

Currently, she has fixed the file by copying in a bullet from a file
that is OK.
But I'd still like to get at the root of the matter.

RE: corrupted paragraph format from 7.2 to 8

Thanks, Art. I'm not actually sure where to pick the character.
In the Numbering tab of paragraph designer, Autonumber Format is selected and
\t²\t is showing in the building blocks field.

When I have created new paragraph tags in the past for which I needed bullets,
I usually select an existing paragraph format that already has a bullet and
then modify the other properties.

Most likely, whatever character you used for the bullet in 7.x has a
different glyph attached to it in the Unicode supporting FM 8.x.

"Fixing" it would involve picking a new character from a font with a
lower mapping number that's the same in both 7.x and 8.x, such as the
default bullet.

David,
Fred's suggestion would certainly work. And because it's a secondary
bullet, you could flag that with an increased indent and/or smaller
font size on the bullet itself (applied with a character tag).

Re: Index question

2008-01-16 Thread David Schor
A couple of simple troubleshooting steps:

Is the format you're referring to exactly named "Heading1" in the template?
Remember that these should be written identically.
Also, check the Paragraph numbering settings in the book and remember to
update the book's numbering before generating the index.

making the image harder to read.

PNG or TIFF would be my first choices, GIF as a third choice depending on
the required color depth.

pagination dilemma

2008-02-03 Thread David Kuhn
I had to adjust our template to add a line to the header (recently one
was also added to the footer), resulting in a two line header and a two
line footer.
The problem is that I need to keep the text area the same size without
stealing from the margins.
I had tested this on body text only and the same number of lines fits on
the page without a problem.
But I noticed than when you have other formatting, such as a lot of
code, the last line on the page practically sits on the line separating
the text from the footer.
Because I've only packaged one document this way, I went through and did
a manual adjustment by applying Keep with Next whenever the last text
line looks too close to the separation line.
Any ideas how to make the impossible possible?
Is there any way to set the minimum space that needs to exist between
the line and the footer?
Any other solutions?

Re: pagination dilemma

2008-02-03 Thread David Schor
Hi David K,

Can't you move the footer text box (on the Master Pages) down a short
distance, either by dragging or by increasing the Offset From Top in
the Text Frame Properties?

Re: Working with Images

2008-02-03 Thread David Creamer
Regarding resolution...

If capturing display boxes, you cannot control how many PPI there are as
they are programs in at X number of pixels by Y number of pixels. Resolution
(ppi) is meaningless as it does not change total number of pixels.

The only time you could control that is when capturing an entire screen and
you adjust your overall monitor resolution.

I would leave them as the default resolution--adding more is not generally
going to improve the image and may even soften the edges of the type.
If I need more resolution, say for preflight reasons, I would use nearest
neighbor.

> get 200 DPI out of that?

Screen size (20") is meaningless, only the monitor resolution counts.
Again, referring to my last post, monitor resolution only counts if
capturing an entire screen.

A 1280x1024 image at 96ppi is 13.3x10.6 inches; at 200ppi it is 6.4x5.12
inches. As you can see, a full-screen capture is usually more than adequate
for most publications.

Dialog boxes, however, are another story. If a dialog box is only 400x300
pixels, it would only be 2x1.5 inches at 200ppi. Generally, it is better to
run the image at the default resolution (96ppi in this case). One can,
however, add extra resolution to the image, but that is usually detrimental
to the quality of the image. If I had to add extra resolution, I would avoid
bicubic interpolations and using nearest neighbor.

You are totally ignoring line screen (aka LPI) when printing. Using the
formula will determine the quality of the output on a black-only laser
printer:
(Output Resolution/Screen Frequency)^2 [squared] +1 = total number of gray
levels available to the printer.
So a 600dpi printer at 100 LPI gives you only 37 levels of gray. For photos,
you need around 200 levels of gray to look natural.

For commercial offset printing, one should use the following guideline:
PPI= LPI x 1.5. (Some use LPI x 2, but 1.5 is normally enough.)

I thought it was pretty clear. 1280x1040 is the same amount to X/Y pixel
data on a 17 inch monitor, a 19 inch monitor, or a 20 inch monitor.

I was not arguing that point--in fact, I stated the same basic thing.
Why make it an issue?

Huh...
One can add extra resolution to an image (regardless if it is good for the
image or not). That is a fact. Therefore, the entire sentence is correct.
How could you say otherwise?

First, I believe we agree that LCD monitors should always be run at their
native resolution (usually the maximum setting, but not always). However, a
screen capture taken at a non-native resolution will have the same quality
at one taken at the native resolution when viewed at actual size in
Photoshop. The "fuzzy" appearance is on-screen artifacts only and will not
affected the use in a document. Now granted, this is on the systems I have
tested, so your mileage may vary.

We are talking about display pixels--1280 pixels is 1280 pixels regardless
of how "big" the pixels are by way of monitor size. This was going back to
my statement that "Screen size (20") is meaningless, only the monitor
resolution counts."
(Just to be sure, I am NOT talking about true monitor pixels, meaning down
to RGB elements.)

RE: Working with Images

2008-02-07 Thread David Creamer
There seems to be some confusing on the use of the term "adding resolution"
when referring to images.

Resolution is simply a measure of the amount of pixels (X/Y counts) and a
pixel-per-inch (ppi) setting. Resolution CAN be increased--period. This is
typically done in a program like Photoshop. (Whether one should do this for
screen captures is another issue and not the point.)

The confusion among some is whether this is adding "real" pixel data,
therefore enhancing the detail of the image. It is not. Detail, or real
pixel data, can only come at the time of initial capture.

Some quasi-experts were claiming that resolution cannot be added at all, but
what they were really referring to is detail by means of original pixel
data.

Note: Adding resolution is not the same as re-assigning the ppi but keeping
the same X/Y pixel amounts.

To repeat my original advice:
1] Do not use JPEG format, but PNG, TIFF, or possibly GIF.
2] Do not add resolution, but use as is.
IF--and only IF--additional resolution is necessary for prepress purposes,
use nearest-neighbor interpolation, not bicubic.
3] Monitor display setting (aka monitor resolution) is only important when
capturing entire screen layouts, not for individual dialog boxes.

RE: help needed with cleanfm batch file

I delete unwanted files by running a search and deleting the found
files.

1.Press Start >> Search >> For Files or Folders >> All files and

2.Type *.backup.* in the text box.

3.Press Search.

After finding all the files, highlight and delete them. That way, you
find and delete them all, regardless of location. Repeat the procedure

Dave,

I don't have the batch file, but you can delete unwanted files as
follows:

1. Open a command prompt by choosing Start > Run, type cmd.exe, and
click

OK.

2. In the command prompt, go to the directory you want to clean up using

the cd command.

3. To delete backup and lock files, execute the commands:

 del *.backup.*

 del *.lck

You can put these in a batch file and run that, too.

Bruce

Hi Folks

A month or 3 ago someone posted a batch file to clean up Frame's backup

and lock files from a folder. I kept a copy of the batch file code, but

now that I want to use it, I can't find the instructions on how to use

it. My manual has expanded and now it is becoming tedious to manually

delete all those .backup files.

Any help would be appreciated.

boilerplate text on reference pages

2008-02-28 Thread David Kuhn
I currently have 4 types of notes (in tables) in my template: Note,
Caution, Tip, and Development.
I need to add a 5th that looks the same as the Development table, using
the same icon, but with the text in the second column displaying
Implementation rather than Development.

I tried selecting the table and renaming it.
Then I created a Paragraph tag that Inserts the Implementation text.
The result is that I insert the table and the Development table appears.

I select the second column and select the Implementation paragraph tag.
If I click the icon itself, it still says Development.

Obviously, this is a workaround rather than the correct solution.
I know the answer lies in the reference page, but I can't figure this
out.
The reference pages contain lines with two frames side by side: one with
the icon, the other with the text, such as Development: with room for
the actual note.

But I don't out how the two separate frames are connected.
And I don't see anything in the Table Designer to assist me.

RE: boilerplate text on reference pages

2008-02-28 Thread David Kuhn
I'm not sure, I never used it.

I just searched the help for the topic and came up with nothing.

I saw that the Development paragraph tag includes the text Development:\
in the Numbering tab.

So in trying to create the Implementation table, I changed this text.

Even though I created the new table style in the catalog.

Oh, I stumbled on the answer.

I forgot to update all.

Now when I insert more tables, at least the Implementation text appears.

The icon text when you hover over it still says development,
unfortunately, but I think I can live with it unless someone has a
clever solution.

(I'm sure you do.)

Globally changing cross-reference styles

2008-03-18 Thread David Kuhn
There was a change in the style used for all our headings, from numbered
sections to non-numbered.
One results is that we need to reapply all the cross-reference styles.
So far we have been doing it manually.
Am I missing something?
Is there a way to globally change cross-reference styles without
purposely corrupted the template by redefining the existing Styles.

If any Adobe people are listening: The options in the Find dropdown list
are great. But the Change options are very limited. Shouldn't the Change
options mirror the Find options?

I did not mean to imply that the None setting was locked in--just that it

Getting FM to recognize Distiller Joboptions files

2008-04-16 Thread Wollenberger, David
Hello all,

I've installed a new joboptions file (capdf8), but I can't get
FrameMaker to recognize it. That is, if I open Distiller 8.1.0, I see
it in the Default Settings pull-down, and if I search my c:\ drive, I
can find it in c:\Documents and Settings\\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\.

But, in FM 7.1b023, if I click Format, Document, PDF setup, it does not
appear in the PDF Job Options pull-down list on the Settings tab in the
PDF Setup dialog (Format, Document, PDF Settings). I did a search of my
c:\ drive for some of the files that do appear in this pull-down list
and found them in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\.

One curious note: One of the files I see in my PDF Job Options pull-down
list within FM is capdf5, which is what I have been using. When I
searched my c:\ drive for this file, I could not find it.

I thought the solution would be to copy capdf8 from the
path to the All Users path, but I got an error message that I "Cannot
copy capdf8: Access is denied." I attempted to uncheck the (grayed out)
read-only status of the folders within All Users, but got another error
message saying "An error occurred apply attributes to the file: ...
Access is denied.".

Any ideas on how I can get my capdf8 file to appear in the FM PDF Job
Options pull-down list?

Many thanks in advance,

David Wollenberger

Comparison of plugin options

2008-04-30 Thread David Kuhn
I need to advise my group what plugin to purchase for easy mapping of
templates with different tag names.
The obvious choice is TemplateMapper.
Paragraph Tools (Silicon Prairie) is also a possibility, but it is more
limited.
I was wondering if combining Paragraph Tools with BookXRefs (Leximation)
would achieve the same effect for less money.
>From what I can see, I'd be missing Master Page and Reference Page
Mapping, as well as table mapping. What else would I be missing by using
these instead of Template Mapper.

Any thoughts regarding this choice are appreciated.

Incorrect special characters

2008-05-15 Thread David Kuhn
I am trying to insert the following special characters using FrameMaker 7.2.
I have tried the FrameMaker character sets PDF provided by Microtype for
FrameMaker 7.2 and also the character sets listed for FrameMaker 8 on the
FrameMaker resources website.
But they appear as the wrong symbols.

*   ≥ (greater than or equal to) Ctrl + q + 3 or ANSI 0179
*   ≠ (not equal to) Ctrl + q + 9 or ANSI 0185
*   ≤ (less than or equal to) Ctrl + q + # or ANSI 0163 (according to
microtype) ANSI 0162 According to FrameMaker 8 manual

Any suggestions?

Use of TemplateMapper for converting from Word?

2008-05-15 Thread David Kuhn
When I first heard of TemplateMapper, I wondered if this could be used
to help convert from Word to FrameMaker.
Then I saw some postings on the list that confirmed that some people do
use it for this.

Now that I have TemplateMapper, I cannot figure out how it is helpful
for this.
If you Import a Word document, selecting Copy into Document, then all
the paragraph tags (except headings and captions) become *BodyText with
no distinction between bullets or numbers, for example.

Other issues:
* It doesn't look like the TemplateMapper can help with the
cross-references because, for instance, there's no way to distinguish
between the cross-reference types.

* Because our notes are in tables, it doesn't look like there is
any way around redoing them all manually.

* It doesn't actually convert the tables. I need to go over them
with TableCleaner.

RE: Use of TemplateMapper for converting from Word?

2008-05-19 Thread David Kuhn

Regarding the issue of using TemplateMapper to convert from word,
Caroline Tabach wrote:

To try and make this more useful, Save the Word document as rtf

Then open the RTF file in FrameMaker.

Now all of your styles are preserved.

Obviously this might not solve your other issue, but does help with the
paragraph styles.

I found that I lost more by importing from RTF. There was still no
differentiation between Word styles. But graphics were no longer in
anchored frames and, although references can in very funny by importing
the word doc, at least they were working references. But this was lost
when importing the RTF.

Then I dug out an old message from Fred Ridder, I think, who suggested
using word macros to help map the styles.

This led to my discovery that the non-differentiation between styles was
actually an issue with the Word template being used. An older template
version did convert better with TemplateMapper because it differentiated
more between styles. So the current word template can be prepped for
conversion to Frame by macros.

Solution to Problem Printing to PDF from FrameMaker 8

2008-06-26 Thread David Kuhn
Though nobody asked, I thought it would be a good idea to share a
solution I just received from an Adobe engineer regarding a problem
printing to PDF from FrameMaker 8.
The scenario: We had a document with multiple conditions. The document
printed OK for two of the conditions, but not the third.
When trying to print a FrameMaker 8 document to PDF, the third condition
resulted in an error message that begins as follows:
Internal Error 8004, 6343724, 8484240, 0. FrameMaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit.

Following is the unedited response:

As a work around, you can try the following:

1. Open the book
2. Open all the files of the book (this is an important
step for things to work).
3. Do a 'Show All'
4. Save as Pdf (optional steps)
5. Set the conditions as before (the third condition)
6. Save As Pdf.

If you are working on an individual document, open the document, and
start from step 3.

Correcting grammar is not something I would consider heroic. Hero is a term
thrown around much too quickly (for example, sports figures).

Bringing *attention* to bad grammar might be worthwhile, but defacing
historic signage is a criminal act (or anyone's signage for that matter).
The sign was known to contain errors, but because of its historic nature, it
was left standing.

Perhaps you should hunt down the tree that Daniel Boone carved "D. Boone
kilt a bar" and fix that one up too.

Re: Frame 8 and WebWorks

One of the biggest problems with WebWorks is that if you upgrade your Frame you
need to fork out the monies for an upgrade to WebWorks. Major pain when budgets

Re: Missing font when printing

2008-09-03 Thread David Spreadbury
Sounds like your postscript printer doesn't know "Symbol."

Try downloading and installing the free SetPrint
(http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm).

SetPrint allows you to configure two unique printers.

Set it up to use Adobe PDF while working in Frame and the physical postscript
printer when outside of Frame.

Hi,

I am having an issue with at least one font on my system.

Within Framemaker, the font is available to use and shows up fine. However,
when I create a PDF or print a hardcopy, the font disappears. There is no
warning that the font is missing. The font is "Symbol".

I have:
Framemaker version 7.0p578
Adobe Type Manager 4.1 build 243 lite
Acrobat prof 8.1.2

Computer is running XP with service pack 2

I also have ARTS link checker, and Timesavers installed (although i don't
think this is working properly, but haven't needed to use it).

Printers drivers are using a PS driver.

I've tried printing using the "Adobe PDF" print option, and
unticking the following setting:

Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts

but still the font doesn't print.

Any ideas please, or has someone ever suffered the same?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

We had the same problem, pasted text from Word going into an anchored frame,

The problem is with MS OLE. You MIGHT work around it by removing SP3,
although this didn't work for me. (That was the only suggested solution I
found in an extensive search of the web.)

My problem, however, was a little different. After importing a Visio file,
all attempts to copy & paste text from a Word doc into Frame resulted in
the
text coming in an anchored frame. I got around it by running the text
through OpenOfficeWriter first.

I had no problems with Frame 8.

I would very interested in hearing how anyone else resolved this problem.
