PAV is on Long Island. But it's not THAT hard to ship stuff off.

2020-06-06 Thread Francisco Torres
well, if after getting the projector from free they do not want to
spend money on basic maint. then they do not know what film is all
about. these are mechanical devices, like cars. if you get a car for
free you still have to take it to a shop for basic stuff or if you
know how to do it you do it yourself. either way you have to do it.
the reason i sugested the freebies is that in my experience they
usually belonged to an institution so at least they got some form of
regular care at some point in the past as opposed to being owned by an
individual that maybe did not have the means or even the interest to
do it.

I'm going to take a cue from Dominic's comment about postage and ask where,
apart from "wasn't in NYC", are you Chris Rodriguez? Frameworks is an
international list and while plenty of its conversations have little
connection to the poster's location, discussions involving weighty
equipment or announcements of non-virtual screenings & workshops are tied
to place and should be made clear.

In this case people might have specific recommendations of where to look
for equipment and people/shops who could repair it if they know your area,
and might even have equipment in storage they'd be willing to unload.

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm Film Projector

2020-06-06 Thread Scott Dorsey
> How would I go about repairing it and/or figuring out what=E2=80=99s wrong =
> with it?

I am assuming that there is nothing wrong with it, that it is perfectly fine
and just needs maintenance. If it needs repair, that is a different matter.

Most projectors have service manuals available which will describe how to do
the standard cleaning and lubrication, and if you are lucky that is all you
will need. Eikis are more prone than most for the lube to really glop up
to the point where it needs total dissassembly and cleaning with naptha rather
than just the cleaning and lube procedure in the manual. That quickly runs
into time.

As Julian noted, most Bell and Howell 500-series projectors have a worm gear
which is made of a material that is incompatible with the lubricants they
used, and which cracks. A new worm gear is available for $20 from Urbanski.
It is an eight hour job to get the thing apart and back together. I tend to
replace the bearings too since after spending all that time you might as well
replace anything that might wear. I'd replace the cam followers too if I could
get them, but I can't. Optech in Boston might; they have hoarded spare
500-series parts for years. 300-series and 1500-series B&H projectors don't do
this but they all have their own oddities.

As he mentioned, the urethane rollers on many Elmo models fail.
New replacements are available. They aren't cheap, but they aren't very
time consuming to replace and it's the time charges that will kill you.
This is also not a failure, it's a wear item that you expect to replace now
and then, just like you expect to put new brakes on your car.

If you would not be comfortable disassembling a manual transmission or you
think 3-in-1 oil is actually good for something, please, please have a tech
do the work for you. These projectors are not being made any more and when
they get wrecked they aren't getting replaced. Proper maintenance will keep
them running a long time.

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm Film Projector

2020-06-06 Thread Julian Antos
FWIW an Eiki SSL or similar would seems to be the most likely to work
without issue even after sitting for many years.

Elmos will have disintegrated rubber rollers, Pageants will almost
certainly have sound or motor problems, and Bell and Howells will have
cracked worm gears.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t remove and clean all rollers and go
over the entire film path, but an Eiki that has been sitting is probably ok
and won’t need much work. Most likely the focus mechanism will have
disintegrated and on older machines the belts can also turn to goo.

Still, these machines should be serviced regularly if they’re expected to
last. Running a projector with minor mechanical issues can damage your
films AND your projector.

The problem with those freebies is that they aren't free. People get them,
they don't want to pay to have them cleaned and lubed before they use them,
and then they wreck the cams in an hour of using them dry. Budget maybe

[Frameworks] brooklyn loft sublet starting july 2020 ($1440/month)

2020-06-06 Thread ev petrol
Hey folks,
apologies for multiple postings, I had some of the info wrong - corrected
below!Moira

I'mlooking for a clean and reliable subletter for my old-school loft
inBrooklyn, from July 2020 till at least the end of the year (finalizingdates
at the mo, will discuss further in person; an earlier move in could also be
possible). Theloft is big and spacious (approx 550 square feet) with
hardwoodfloors, high ceilings and great light; there’s a separate bedroomand a
large living room with basic kitchen (two hot plates, counter, fridge and sink).
The loft is fully furnished, close to two subwaystops and has a view of
Manhattan (and lots of good books andmusic!). I'm an independent filmmakerwho
will be travelling for work - the loft is my live/work space, soI’m looking for
someone who will respect and take care of it whileI’m out of town.

Rentis $1440, this includes utilities(without a/c) and cleaning once a month.
Additional utilities (eg: ifa/c used) will be paid by the subletter. Tosecure
the sublet I'll need 3 references, the 1st month’s rent anda deposit of one
month’s rent which I will return once you've movedout. The replacement cost of
anything missing or damaged will besubtracted from the deposit. No pets allowed
(non-negotiable). Get intouch for pix, further info &c!
