Re: [Frameworks] Seeking Projector Manual (Eiki EX-2000A)
Hi Steve, Someone on this list can likely help. http://www.16mmdirectory.org/projectors/eiki?country=US I've not talked to Richard for some time, but I know he ended up with a lot of parts and manuals (directly) from Eiki USA. Re: [Frameworks] Chantal Akerman died
Very sad news... Akerman's influence is immense, and her vision is one that should be more widely celebrated and studied in film/art programs across the US. Perhaps in some quarters her work is celebrated, though the program I attended barely mentioned her name. It is also tragic that so much of Akerman's work remains difficult to find viewing copies of. 40 some films and videos, and only a fraction can be tracked down without much work. For years, I coveted a VHS copy of News From Home. Thankfully, Criterion released Akerman in the Seventies. About once a year, I watch my tired VHS copy of Akerman on Akerman (Cinéastes de notre temps), in part to see clips from those difficult to locate films, but also to see her opening introduction, spoken directly to the camera. Re: [Frameworks] making my Eiki lighter
Of the SSL parts, the transformer, and the fly wheel are the heaviest. Don't think you want to remove those. Other things you could remove, actually have some function use, so I don't think you'd want to remove these either (elevator foot, carry handle). There is a lot of plastic and aluminum on that machine, so it's pretty light as is. Hokushin made a slot load that was slightly smaller and weighs less than the SSL, though these are not as easy to find when compared to the SSL. Re: [Frameworks] Correction: Eiki/Hokushin service recommendations?
For Eiki, you might try Urbanski. The following is a list of Eiki service providers. I've used a few of them, perhaps others on this listserv can chime in if they feel strongly about one vendor over another. http://16mmdirectory.org/projectors/eiki Hokushin will be tough due to parts availability. Rangertone was the last service center, and they've been gone for some time. No idea where those parts ended up. Great projectors, maybe even a tad better than Eiki but don't know many people servicing them. You could ask RFS near Montreal. Super 8 Reversal Lab in The Hague rents three models of Hokushin xenon and might have a good source for parts/service. You could also post your question to the collector's list run by Urbanski - 16mmfilmtalk.com. There are a number of things in Kodak's catalogue (35mm cans 1000', molecular sieves, etc) that have minimum orders higher than what I need. FATF/AMIA is working on a purchasing scheme that can distribute smaller quantities to individuals and organizations. There might be other groups attempting to do something like this, however that this happening within AMIA's ranks is a positive thing IMO. I don't think Metro is doing traditional optical work anymore. The price was around $9K. There is a film recorder called the Piql (used to be the Cinevator) that allows you to go from DI to 35mm estar print. Of course you have to have a digital file (DI), which assumes you scanned the negative. The only place I know of in North American that has one of these is Technicolor, and their Piql is not set-up to go DI direct to 35mm print. You could try Janice at Cinema Arts or Dick at Film Technology to see if they can do a direct blow-up, but the price will likely be as much as Metropolis if not higher. I think LIFT has an optical camera for blow-ups? You could fly/drive up to Toronto and use their camera for the price of the room plus stock. Gibbs Chapman in SF had an optical camera from ILM that he was setting up. You might contact Gibbs and see if he is providing this service. Re: [Frameworks] Worth a look for the film-concerned: Tarantino taking over the New Beverly Cinema
Let's hope the new 16mm projector that gets installed at the New Beverly is Bond modded Eastman 25/30/40. Whether Kinoton is out of the game with the FP-38E or not, I've seen a lot of inconsistency from one FP-38E to the next (even in top facilities), and convinced it has design flaws. The FP-38E dialed can look super bright, with impeccable edge to edge sharpness, and mostly steady, but not as steady as the modded Eastmans. Best projection of 16mm that I've seen was in the larger theater at Gene Siskel Film Center, the Bijou at CalArts, and at Harvard Film Archive, all Eastman installs by Bond. The Siskel and HFA installs are particularly impressive because the image is so damn tall. I don't know the exact specs, but I'm guessing close to 20' high for 16mm. Re: [Frameworks] Bolex 16/super 16 conversion
Hi Roger, Do you still have your LTR? I'd stick with that before converting a Bolex, but maybe you're looking for something more portable? I have seen a few Ikonoskop cameras on eBay selling for much less than their new price. You might consider this option... very portable! The Bolex is great for many things, but I've never considered it very steady, and the gate seems to attract more dust and debris than most other cameras I've used. If you're LTR is gone, then consider, as Jeff said, getting a used Aaton XTR or XTRprod, or converting an Eclair NPR to super 16. Les Bosher does this for very reasonable prices, and the Eclair will be steadier than the Bolex. Les will re-center the C mount if you like and you can use some 10mm Switars (later pre-set models) for shooting super 16mm, or purchase some B mount Zeiss primes (I might be selling mine soon). I would add Tim Wilkins to your list... Tim's been projecting Kodachrome and BWR originals for a number of years. I made a few films on BWR, as it saved me from work printing or scanning the film for editing, though this was back when one could (wet-gate) print on 7361 to get a clean projection print. Re: [Frameworks] Modern 16mm features, distributed on film
Hi John, "Feature" is a somewhat broad term, and speaks more to run time than form/content, but given your examples, I would assume you are asking about experimental features?? The exact run time of a "feature" also seems to be dictated by market/venue. Some say 40 minutes, some 60, and the industry state side usually says/said 70+ minutes. There was a surf film (*Hangs Upon Nothing*) that was shot on 16mm and distributed as a 16mm print during the last couple years (2013-2014). This is obviously pretty rare. Shooting on 16mm is not uncommon for ski, snowboard, skate and surf films, but in recent years even shooting on 16mm has become less common, coinciding with the appearance of RED and GoPro cameras. I'm glad to see Charlotte mentioned Betzy's recent work (*Voluptuous Sleep* I have yet to see), as well as Amanda's mention of Barbara Sternberg (*In The Nature of Things*, 44 minutes) whose longer form work, I feel, is some of her best. On the shorter side of features, there is Thom Anderson's *Get Out of the Car* (2010, 34 minutes), which I believe exists as a 16mm print? Has any of Kevin Jerome Everson's recent work (*Quality Control, The Island of St Mathews*) been distributed as 16mm? In addition to *Molussia*, maybe Pip has other examples of recent European work? Adam Sekuler watched a lot of films come through NWFF in recent years (before his departure), and might also have some additional examples. Reto Kromer in Switzerland has a supply of black leaders (camera neg, prints), and has also indicated that ORWO will/may do special runs of black leader, though I don't know the details, you'll have to contact ORWO NA (Brooklyn) or ORWO (Germany) directly for more details. There may be other options, so if you know of them, post to FW and/or AMIA-L. --Alain On Thu, Apr 24, 2014 at 9:38 PM, 40 Frames wrote: > > I suppose this is old news by now, but discontinued in March... > > http://motion.kodak.com/motion/uploadedFiles/PCN030214_Q.pdf > > 6-mil Kodak Opaque Black Acetate Leaders... in all formats. > > I am aware that the magnetic film Kodak carries is made by Pyral, however > I am surprised to see 16mm magnetic film > stay in the catalogue longer than all formats of black leader. > > I haven't looked around much yet, but I suppose ORWO still carries black > leader... who else? > > > Alain > > > -- > 40 FRAMES > Alain LeTourneau > Pam Minty > > 40 FRAMES > 5232 North Williams Avenue > Portland, Oregon 97217 > USA > > +1 503 231 6548 > www.40frames.org > www.16mmdirectory.org > www.emptyquarterfilm.org > -- 40 FRAMES Alain LeTourneau Pam Minty 40 FRAMES 5232 North Williams Avenue Portland, Oregon 97217 USA +1 503 231 6548 www.40frames.org www.16mmdirectory.org www.emptyquarterfilm.org ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Re: [Frameworks] AC/AC 1500W converter query
Not so much a response to this post... but to the previous lamp brightness post... I have a projector that uses a rheostat to up the voltage sent to an ELC lamp. It over drives the lamp voltage, but just slightly, say 24.5-25V. There is a point at which you can push the lamp near the breaking point. If sending too much voltage the lamp will blow... but just a little over 24V and you're increasing brightness without blowing the lamp. If it shortens the lamp life, I haven't noticed it. Not certain how this would work with the on-board transformer of a Eiki SSL or Kodak Pageant or whatever you're wanting to use, but if you have a machine to sacrifice, you might try a rheostat. There is also David's suggestion of the higher output ELC (more lumens), or the suggestion of a 2 blade shutter (if you currently have a three blade), and using a fast lens... most 38mm and wide angle lenses will be f1.5 or slower, but if using an Eiki with an ISCO 35-65, you get f1.3, or if you have a longer throw, a standard, large barrel 50mm lens is usually f1.2 (Eiki, Bell & Howell, etc). Then, as others have mentioned, there is the gain (reflectivity) of the screen, and the darkness of the room. Image size can be another indicator of brightness, one needs to right size the image according to the power/efficiency of the light source available. With xenon lamp houses, a lot of time can be spent aligning/adjusting the lamp and lamp reflector for optimum efficiency... focusing every bit of light on the gate without spillover. [Frameworks] Kodak MP bulk orders (RE: Black leaders, etc)
Elena Rossi-Snook is working directly with Kodak to coordinate bulk orders. This would be for items in the Motion Picture catalogue that are recently discontinued (such as black leader), or in danger of being discontinued. *Contact Elena for more info: elenarossisn...@nypl.org * I highly recommend that if your educational program continues to purchase and use Kodak motion picture product that you get in contact with Elena. Having large orders placed at once will ensure the continuation of various products in the MP catalogue. When I am cutting negative, I am mostly A rolling, and should have enough on hand for current projects, however the news of discontinuation of black leader should be troubling for anyone wishing to finish on film. Kodak will continue to make black leader available, if Kodak can do large enough production runs through bulk orders. I assume you are talking about the Graflex 900 series? http://www.16mmdirectory.org/search?q=singer Chuck Hessinger had a large collection of parts for these machines. You might want to contact him to ask what he has in stock for the projector you are interested in or have. I had a Graflex once, I think it was a model 920. One thing I wasn't too impressed with was the threading path, which to my memory was not as accessible as the Pageant. I always prefer a projector that makes the film easy to load and remove from the gate and thread path. This also makes it easier to clean the entire thread path (not just the gate). I seem to recall that even the manual loading Graflex did not make it easier to access the entire thread path, but I might be wrong here, as it has been a long time since I have used one of these projectors. The 900 series Graflex lens has a barrel diameter of 1.184", compared to the Pageants 1.156". I bet you could remove the lens housing on the Pageant, take it to a machine shop and have the shop open up the len port enough to fit a Graflex zoom lens. With the Pageant 250S you have a cooler EJL quartz lamp (I've also used ELC in place of EJL). The Graflex is going to use a much hotter incandescent, and why have all that heat near the film if you don't have to. The Pageant may have it's problems (the lens being on the top of the list), but it just might edge out the Graflex for the reasons I stated above. And there is Visual Products in Wellington, OH. With the film camera market being what it is now, they do mostly lens work these days.
