One of the most mysterious figures in the business. As the legend goes, he
had a pseudonym or two (?)
Hopefully his works get preserved and written about more. Truly on the
radical edge of avant-garde film.

Re: [Frameworks] film/art for the autistic

2018-08-30 Thread Dan Anderson
Thank you for the advice/insights, Dave!
And also everyone else that has contacted me on and off list.

My school is in a rural area, just a few miles down the road from where
Sling Blade was shot. One of the students identifies as autistic, but I'm
assuming that's just because it's a more commonly understood blanket term
for being on the spectrum. Another is undiagnosed but has a similar
condition/personality to the Billy Bob Thornton character in the movie.
(Not to make light of this, but just to paint a picture.) And we have a mix
of more common community college students also.

For anyone following the thread, I wanted to mention that it's been going
much better and I had a bit of a breakthrough in my last class. My most
socially handicapped student doesn't have a home computer, and was
struggling with just the basics of how windows work, etc. Once we got the
editing system set up, I showed him some bare bones basic editing maneuvers
and then went on to help other students around the room. About twenty
minutes later he beckons me over by pointing at his screen. And to my utter
shock, he had already cut together a found footage movie that would give
Bruce Conner goosebumps. Poetic, artful, and incorporating all of the
elements of editing that we discussed in class. I'm a fairly stoic critic,
but was totally floored. Now, a couple of the others are still getting the
hang of things, but this was quite a revelation. I'm excited with what
they're all able to come up with.

[Frameworks] film/art for the autistic

2018-08-28 Thread Dan Anderson
Hey folks,

Thanks for those who chimed in with thoughts and recommendations for
working with non-hearing students!

In part two of "Adventures in First-Time Community College Teaching," I'm
wondering if anyone has experience better reaching autistic students.

There are two in my "Intro to Video" class, and we're starting out making a
found footage movie from archive.org. The trouble is that finding visual
connections and the Bruce Conner-style of filmmaking is a really tough
hurdle for a person living with autism. (let alone most non-autistic folks!)

Are there any autistic filmmakers on the list, or film/art instructors that
have experience working with them?

thanks!

[Frameworks] film/art for the deaf

2018-08-23 Thread Dan Anderson
Hey Film Folks,

I'm teaching a classic "Art Appreciation" course at a community college
next semester, the first time I've taught college level or anything other
than film/video production.

I was given notice that one of my students is completely deaf and will
require any videos shown to a captioned. My first thought is that it will
be exciting to show some Stan Brakhage, but I'm wondering if any other
teachers have had experience with deaf students or could recommend
materials that would appeal equally to hearing and non-hearing folks.

This is a required class for non-art students, but may ride heavily in the
film and new media direction.. just because I won't be able to help myself
;)

thanks!

This is an old threat, but wanted to mention that in the past year or so
I've actually used the Wolverine film scanner quite a bit.. So felt bad for
panning it so bad a year ago.. It's not perfect, but cheap and probably
better results than the old "off the wall" scheme..

Here's a short "commercial" I did with footage scanned with a Wolverine,
for a German marketing student summer camp... It was shot on a cartridge of
Kahl Super 8mm reversal that had some cool light leaks going on. There is
some digital keying but minimal color correction. Noticeable digital
artifacts, but it wasn't too distracting for this particular project.

[Frameworks] 16mm E6 - Wittner vs. Agfa

2017-01-23 Thread Dan Anderson
Hey all,

Wondering if there are any E6 color reversal enthusiasts here that have
used Wittner Chrome 200D and/or Agfa Aviphot 200D ??

Looked for tests on YouTube, and the Wittner looks better, although it's
hard to judge due to different types of footage and transfer qualities..
I'm interested in using it for optical printing and maybe in-camera...
Hand-developing if I get ambitious.

And for extra credit.. Anyone ever try using Kodak 3383 print stock in a
camera?

I bought a Wolverine.. It's easy to use and very handy, but the image
quality is quite poor. I went in with low expectations based on the reviews

is that it captures "frame-by-frame" so you don't get a digital blur

So far my go-to is usually Neighbours by McLaren, and Dr. Strangelove

As a general rule of thumb, don't listen to anyone's opinion on Final Cut X
unless they've actually taken the time learn and understand it... Same
advice should be used for most things in life ;-)

I disagree with $4000. A 21 iMac - what a school would likely be running

schools, but they likely already have the computers.

I'm not a teacher, but I graduated four years ago and kept in touch with
teachers at my old school. They bit the bullet and upgraded to FCPX in
2012. The teachers I've kept in touch with say it's easier to deal with
and to teach it compared to old Final Cut. For example, if you've got 20
students using 20 different cameras, plus appropriated footage from the
web, FCPX is more likely to be able to deal with all of those file types -
so there's less MPEG Streamclip or Compressor converting and fewer fires to
put out in class. I've also heard the interface is more intuitive to
students coming from iMovie or who have no video editing experience.

educational discounts, it's a joke. And the whole FCP X debacle caused many
 users to switch to Premiere.

Premiere used to suck, but that was ten years ago. Now it's totally
viable, and I would recommend going that route. It's not perfect, but it's
far better than FCP X. Plus, it's cross-platform, if you're into that sort

developed a messy do-whatever-you-want solution where individual faculty

only know FCPX, some are still using FCP7, a handful are learning Premiere
on their own, and it's all a bit of a mess). I'd love to hear from as many

editing post-FCP7, how you reached your decision, what your reasons were

Re: [Frameworks] Converting digital video to VHS using Premiere or something else

2013-08-17 Thread Dan Anderson
Try to find an older, working VHS camcorder and tape it off your computer
screen. Maybe your local media center, public access television station,
school or thrift store has one in the backroom somewhere... although
they're getting much harder to find working these days.

Taping through the air will get rid of that harsh HD look more
organically than downgrading on a computer or running through cables... and
usually older cameras have manual image controls that you could adjust
easily to get the look you're going for. Move back and zoom in for more
softness/pixels. (HD televisions and computer screens don't tend to flicker
and wobble off the screen like they did in the old days..)

Then, play the VHS through a monitor and record it with an iPhone or
HDcamera to get back onto an online format. Eliminating cables and
programs
all together will save a lot of time/hassle/money unless you're already set
up for making transfers.

Why don't you just downsample it to 480p? Just export it to a lower

Hey Im making a stopmotion video using adobe premiere and it looks
terrible because its HD and looks too crisp. You can see all the shitty

done this before using a tape deck with a firewire cable but it was so long
ago and I kind of forget how it was done. I also don't have acces to such
a tape deck. Just wondering if anyone knew how to do this and/ or had that
kind of tape deck available in the NYC area. Thanks

 Hello Frameworkers-

I wanted to update everyone here about what's going on with Peripheral
Produce. After a couple years of hiatus we are dusting things off and
finally re-releasing The AUTO-CINEMATIC Video Mix Tape. Originally
released in 1998 on VHS, The AUTO-CINEMATIC Video Mix Tape was the first of
many experimental film mix-tapes, and later DVDS, to be released by
Peripheral Produce, and features early work from Miranda July, Jon Raymond,
Animal Charm, Vanessa Renwick, Bryan Konefsky, Matt McCormick (me), and
 several others.

To celebrate the show we will be having a screening event and party on
Saturday August 4th at the Hollywood Theatre here in Portland. The show
will feature many pieces from the DVD, as well as a retrospective of both
old and new experimental works made here in Portland over the past 15 years.

Re: [Frameworks] humorous experimental films

2012-05-23 Thread Dan Anderson
Scott Coleman Miller's Uso Justo(2005) was a riot when it first came out.
It's a self-ironic restructuring of an old Mexican b/w film, in which the
actors find themselves auditioning for an experimental film.

Matt McCormick's Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal (2002) also swept
through the festival world and was really hilarious. It's a tongue-n-check,
avant-doc about municipal graffiti removal in Portland, OR.

Both of these films might seem a little cliche or not quite as funny if
they were made today, but 7-10 years ago they were pretty fresh and could
put a crowd in tears.

Oh.. Animal Charm is also pretty great, particularly Mark Roth, and also
films by Portland's Larry Johnson, Three Possible Scenes (2001) and The
Mustache (2002).

More in the realm of absurdism than experimental film, works by Matthew
Silver (New Jersey), Mike Etoll (Minneapolis), James W. Harris (georgia)
and Phil Chambliss (arkansas) are my all-time favs... Amy Lockhart
(Vancouver) and Skizz Cyzyk (Baltimore) get pretty far-out too.

loud (which is uncommon for me) at Om.

I'm all for droll humor, but I wouldn't call Wavelength a laugh riot.
It's a long wait before Hollis shows up. I think there's a lot of humor in
Frampton, especially Hapax Legomena 1-3 [(nostalgia), Critical Mass, Poetic
Justice) but it's subtle, and tickles the back of your brain more than
 boinking your funnybone.

Experimental films are rarely 'just' funny. Where you find humor it's
often mixed in a very unstable balance with darkness. How can I shave when
I can't think of s reason for living? Cracks me up every time. Cause I've
already been through the angst straight, you know.

For American films, some that come to mind:
The Geography of the Body, (Willard Maas) which is the rare
 straightforward comedy.
The End, (Christopher Maclaine) which is intermittently hilarious and
 apocalyptic.
Flaming Creatures (Jack Smith) (it helps if you know it's a comedy going
 in)
Hold Me While I'm Naked, Sins of the Fleshapoids and other early George
 and Mike Kuchar stuff.
 Oh Dem Watermelons (Robert Nelson)
Blonde Cobra (Ken Jacobs) again funny parts amidst a darker vision overall
 Recreation (Robert Breer)
New Improved Institutional Quality (George Landow aka Owen Land)

other Breer, Nelson and Landow works also have their share of humor

Then there are some experimental films that are more 'fun' than funny,
such as Cosmic Ray by Bruce Conner, Roger Beebe's TB/TX Dance, Peace
 Mandala by Paul Sharits.

good luck, (or good yuck) Let there be rejoicing!
