I don't know much about mozilla, but I think that Firefox does not do
much with RSS. It just XML file for it. You can bookmark URL and not
much more.

Thunderbird can present RSS messages as email.

I tried Liferea 0.6.4 today and was rather satisfied with it. It
provides message overview and integrates with Firefox on Gnome rather
well.

Hm. Well, *something* installed faultlessly this evening.
Where is Liferea-0.6.4 and does it have a link in "tools"
or elsewhere. Actually, what I'd like is a "news-ticker"
horizontally scrolling. Are there any RSS/other apps like
that that work with NPR or the BBC?

If you have raid 5 on 3 x 100-Gb drives you will only get 200Gb partition.

In fact, the total capacity is 320GB, I have three 160Gb Samsung sata
drives.

"not official"
Do you mean, that you burn the ISO from ftp server, or you have compose
themself something ?

As for the cd, I downloaded the bult distributions from a Japanise mirror,
the structure of the binaries was the same as the binaries on the official cd.
I extracted the official cd and the boot sector, changed the old binaries with
the newer, and I burned a new cd from the binaries and the original bootsector.
I know, this is rather a foolish solution, but speeder then compiling the
source on my old 800mhz machine, and it works fine on this computer. I'm using
this stable now at home. It was necessary to make such a disc, because the
release didn't boot on the server machine, I don't know why.

Assuming you mean software raid, vinum:

No, I meant hardware raid, but I forgot to mention it, sorry.
There's a 3ware 8056-4lp pci sata raid controller, and I checked, that the

If you have hardware raid, please copy kernel messages detecting this

Does creating of smaller size partitions works ? Do you really tryes to
install with smaller partition size ?

Unfortunately I don't know how to save that dmesg. I know, on an installed system I can find it in a file boot.dmesg or something like that, but in this case I don't have any idea.

You can boot with serial console and save console output.
I didn't try to install, because I didn't want to destroy the previous system. It is a Debian-sarge for amd64 but it isn't reliable enough,

I think, stable branch will not be much more reliable.
thus I intend to install FreeBSD stable from that i386 disc or in any other way
and then I'd like to upgrade via CVSup with an amd64 optimized code. I prefer
FreeBSD to linuxes, I use it at home and I'm entirely appreciated with it apart
from this trouble. And in the linux world there hasn't been a good distribution
that entirely supports amd64 yet.
By the way, NetBSD didn't boot like the FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE, OpenBSD did boot,
but didn't see my raid array.
Best wishes,
Gabor Kovesdan

Hmm. Do you have a normal controller in this computer ? I think, it will
be possible to do something like this:
1. Install RELEASE on small spare HD (4-10 Gb will be enought). Use for
installation some
common old non-server computer.
2. Upgrade it to stable.
3. Boot server from this HD, not from RAID.
4. Play with RAID, repartition it, format and move root, usr and all
other onto RAID.

But i think it will not best solution to server. STABLE branch is for
testing, not for real work.
It is not wise idea to use stable for production purposes.

Re: PXE boot / BTX Halted [solved]

2004-12-31 Thread Jason Taylor
I'm trying to set up a few diskless workstations using some old
hardware. I've tried four different boxes for clients ranging from a
P-133 to a P-200. I did use the same Realtek 8139 based NIC in all 4
boxes, but I don't think that's the problem. They all get to the
point where they grab pxeboot via tftp and then a message

I'm using the instructions from
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2004/09/09/diskless_server.html and
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2004/09/30/diskless_clients.html

All pointers, hints, RTFMs, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

An update with with info I hope is more useful.
I found an eepro100 card and updated the "Intel Boot Agent" to version
4.1.16. Using this card gets me a little further. Taking out the 4th
stuff per the ONLamp instructions, yields a dump and BTX Halted right
after:

pxe_open: gateway ip: 192.168.1.254
/boot/kernel/kernel text=0x5021c8 data=0x7cc10+0x4fe30
syms=[0x4+0x5a690+0x4+0x6f5d8]

Leaving it in, it happens right after the Beastie menu timer finishes
counting down. In both cases I get the exact same (register?) values.
And here they are:

int=0006  err=  efl=00010002  eip=c0650b2f
eax=  ebx=c0a9a006  ecx=0005  edx=c0a9a009

   05 00 00 00 a3 5d 8e c0-00 e0 c1 00 00 00 00 00
BTX Halted
I tried a 2nd box with the same card and got the same results.
What am I doing wrong? Are there any BIOS settings I should be
checking? Is my equipment simply too antiquated or not supported? Are
there any other debugging steps I can take?

I found the solution in the last handful of messages in this thread
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/fa.freebsd.stable/browse_thread/thread/158bf491d67001b2/08bc3c981811414a

The problem was I'd set CPUTYPE=p3 when rebuilding world and the i586s
I'd been trying for clients did not like that. It seems obvious in hind
site.

Everything is working wonderfully with the Intel NIC, but BTX still dies
when I try with the RTL8139/Etherboot combo. :-s

Networking to WinXP

2004-12-31 Thread Gerard Seibert
I have used the 'smbclient' from Samba to access my WinXP computers from

Does anyone know of any other full featured networking tool that I can
use to access my WinXP boxes. I am not too happy with either of the two

Production Release 5.3 Installation Won't Boot

2004-12-31 Thread babaloo munchies
Hello,

I downloaded ISO images disc 1 & disc 2 & the boot
disk for FreeBSD 5.3 to install on a Pentium MMX
machine. None of these discs will boot for the
installation! What happens is the CD drive fires up,
I see a couple of lines from FreeBSD--the bootloader
or something--it acts like it's trying to boot. The
CD drive spins up, the two or three lines flash on the
screen but then the whole computer restarts. It keeps
doing this over and over again for each disc.

I had an old FreeBSD 4.8 disc and it booted fine. I
thought maybe my burner had problems so I burned a
Linux distro and it booted fine.

So the problem cannot be the CD medium (3 cds w/ same
problem?), not the CD burner and not the machine.
What's going on? This is the third time I've tried
FreeBSD and failed to get it to work. I just give up
and revert to linux because at least I can install it
each and every time. But I want to use FreeBSD.

Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean by "stable 5.3" if you are tracking 5-STABLE (RELENG_5)
then this could be the problem. If you are change cvsup to RELENG_5_3
and try again, if you are tracking RELENG_5_3 then yes I'd say it was a
hardware problem too. Power supply, Ram, or something overheating are
likely suspects for "random" problems.

Re: upgrading perl

2004-12-31 Thread Erik Norgaard
Karl Agee wrote:
Freebsd 4.11-pre. I am working on learning perl, and have perl 5.00x
that is in the base system when I installed 4.10-Release. Since most of
the learning materials out there are based on later verisions esp since
5.6.x some of the features arent in this older version.

I am considering upgrading to 5.8.5 via ports, but, dont know if that
will break anything.
It won't break anything.
You can have the base install, 5.6.x and 5.8.x installed from ports
simultaneously. After installing perl from ports you run

   /usr/local/bin/use.perl port
This will create links to the port install, eg.
   /usr/bin/perl -> /usr/bin/perl5.8.5
And you can go back with
   /usr/local/bin/use.perl system
Which will then replace the link with, eg.
   /usr/bin/perl -> /usr/bin/perl5
These are the limitations:
use.perl can only switch between one installed port-version and the
system perl. So if you want to use another port-version (ie. for some
reason you want both 5.6.x and 5.8.x) you will have to do the linking
manually.

When you install perl-packages they will be installed into the package
path of the currently selected perl. So if you use 5.8.5 and install say
p5-DBI then this won't be available for the system perl. However, perl
looks backward, so 5.8.5 sees packages installed for the system perl.

I haven't found big differences between 5.6 and 5.8, so I'd suggest you
use 5.8. The main reason to stick with an older version is that you
might develop scripts for platforms where the newer are not available.

Note: If/when you upgrade to 5.x there is no system perl, this is partly
to avoid the mess with multiple versions of perl.

Cheers, Erik

9.3.0 on FreeBSD 5.3

2004-12-31 Thread J.D. Bronson
It compiles fine and runs fine...but I noticed an odd thing.
When the MASTER DNS server boots up, it fails to send notifies
to the SLAVES:
31-Dec-2004 06:51:33.207 zone domain.com/IN/external: notify to 1.1.1.1#53:
retries exceeded

(tons of them..each referring to each of my domains or zones)
None of the slaves ever see the NOTIFY.
..here is the odd part:
If I kill off named (after boot is all done)...then launch it again,
the SLAVES now receive the NOTIFYs.
So its *only* during the boot-up sequence that I am seeing this.
Bind 9.3.0 starts in the SAME way as the OEM version that comes with
FREEBSD 5.3 with 2 exceptions.

1. I run it chrooted to /var/named
2. In rc.conf, I simply specify my new compiled binary
and launch it as such:
named_enable="YES"
named_program="/usr/local/sbin/named"
named_flags="-t /var/named -u named"
Anyone have ANY insight on this?

Is there any reason for not using bind 9.3.0 that comes with FreeBSD 5.3 ?
It can be run chrooted with the same flags you are using.

Regarding your question, I suposse your master server can't connect to your
slaver server on port tcp 53 which is used for transfer zones and
master-slave notifications because of some packet filter. Do you have any
tcp-wrapper, ipfw or ipf rules that may be blocking the establishment of tcp
session on port 53 ?

Is there any reason for not using bind 9.3.0 that comes with FreeBSD 5.3 ?
It can be run chrooted with the same flags you are using.

Regarding your question, I suposse your master server can't connect to your
slaver server on port tcp 53 which is used for transfer zones and
master-slave notifications because of some packet filter. Do you have any
tcp-wrapper, ipfw or ipf rules that may be blocking the establishment of tcp
session on port 53 ?

There is no pf or ipf or anything on this box. Humm.

I have basically the same setup (5.3 patchlevel 2 and Wine 120104) and get the
same error.

However, strangely enough, the error shows up on some apps that actually run.
I was able to run Mozilla's Sunbird calendar program with no apparent errors
on-screen, but , if I start it from a terminal window I see the heap error,
but it runs anyway...

I looked at the vm_mmap.c in the latest sources and the patch would not apply,
so I assume the code has been merged, but couldn't really verify that. I
searched for some of the variables from the patch and they weren't in the
file. So, now I'm really confused as to what needs to be done.

Subject: Mounting smbfs

Familiar with Webmin way of mounting smbfs type file systems on our
Linux boxes, I tried it with one of the FreeBSD 5.3 machines. It works
fine, but when rebooted, it sits waiting for a password. After
investigating a bit on the web I found that FreeBSD is uses the
/etc/nsmb.conf file for configuration and in that file I find
information evidently setup by Webmin, for example:
[spc2k:backupexec:backup]
workgroup=SPCLOCAL
password=x
addr=192.168.1.13
First, was this properly setup by Webmin? From the comments in the
file,
it looks good. Since I am at a remote location, I had someone locally
just hit Ctrl+C during boot to get back in and look at these things. I
go to Webmin and click to mount, but then it wipes out all the mount
points except the one I clicked and does not mount that one. From
looking around the web, I realize Webmin may not be the best way to
manage this, I found this document:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=34247
I am looking for something that can guide me on how to make the
entries
in my fstab file. I assume what I have now below is incorrect as the
boot up fails as previously mentioned.

//[EMAIL PROTECTED]/backup  /home/backup/Veritas/SPC2K  smbfs  rw  0  0
Can someone help or guide me to some more documentation on this?

Make your fstab entry something like this:
//[EMAIL PROTECTED]/backup  /home/backup/Veritas/SPC2K   smbfs

See how that works for you.

Could be a good opportunity to update the whole system, which will be
less prone to further errors on your part.
 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html
and
 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html

If you just want to reinstall what you originally got from a fresh
release install, it's probably easier to get it from the distribution
(in whatever form you used for the original install) than to rebuild
it.

If you really want to rebuild it from source, and not rebuild anything
else, you should be able to do something along the lines of
"cd /usr/src/usr.sbin/named && make && make install",
but you may need to set a few other variables, too...

Good luck.

How to get best results from FreeBSD-questions

2004-12-31 Thread Greg Lehey

How to get the best results from FreeBSD questions.
===

Last update $Date: 2004/09/19 02:40:48 $

This is a regular posting to the FreeBSD questions mailing list. If
you got it in answer to a message you sent, it means that the sender
thinks that at least one of the following things was wrong with your
message:

- You left out a subject line, or the subject line was not appropriate.
- You formatted it in such a way that it was difficult to read.
- You asked more than one unrelated question in one message.
- You sent out a message with an incorrect date, time or time zone.
- You sent out the same message more than once.
- You sent an 'unsubscribe' message to FreeBSD-questions.

If you have done any of these things, there is a good chance that you
will get more than one copy of this message from different people.
Read on, and your next message will be more successful.

I: Introduction
===

This is a regular posting aimed to help both those seeking advice from
FreeBSD-questions (the "newcomers"), and also those who answer the
questions (the "hackers").

Note that the term "hacker" has nothing to do with breaking
into other people's computers. The correct term for the latter
activity is "cracker", but the popular press hasn't found out
yet. The FreeBSD hackers disapprove strongly of cracking
security, and have nothing to do with it.

In the past, there has been some friction which stems from the
different viewpoints of the two groups. The newcomers accused the
hackers of being arrogant, stuck-up, and unhelpful, while the hackers
accused the newcomers of being stupid, unable to read plain English,
and expecting everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. Of
course, there's an element of truth in both these claims, but for the
most part these viewpoints come from a sense of frustration.

In this document, I'd like to do something to relieve this frustration
and help everybody get better results from FreeBSD-questions. In the
following section, I recommend how to submit a question; after that,
we'll look at how to answer one.

II: How to unsubscribe from FreeBSD-questions

When you subscribed to FreeBSD-questions, you got a welcome message
from [EMAIL PROTECTED] In this message, amongst
other things, it told you how to unsubscribe. Here's a typical
message:

Welcome to the freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list!

If you ever want to unsubscribe or change your options (eg, switch to
or from digest mode, change your password, etc.), visit your
subscription page at:

also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:

You must know your password to change your options (including
changing the password, itself) or to unsubscribe.

Normally, Mailman will remind you of your freebsd.org mailing list
passwords once every month, although you can disable this if you
prefer. This reminder will also include instructions on how to
unsubscribe or change your account options. There is also a button on
your options page that will email your current password to you.

Here's the general information for the list you've

This is the mailing list for questions about FreeBSD. You should not
send "how to" questions to the technical lists unless you consider the

don't need to specify your mail ID unless it is different from the one
which you specified when you subscribed.

If Majordomo replies and tells you (incorrectly) that you're not on
the list, this may mean one of two things:

  1. You have changed your mail ID since you subscribed. That's where
keeping the original message from majordomo comes in handy. For

"The Complete FreeBSD": errata and addenda

2004-12-31 Thread Greg Lehey
The trouble with books is that you can't update them the way you can a web page
or any other online documentation. The result is that most leading edge
computer books are out of date almost before they are printed. Unfortunately,
The Complete FreeBSD, published by O'Reilly, is no exception. Inevitably, a
number of bugs and changes have surfaced.

"The Complete FreeBSD" has been through a total of five editions, including its
predecessor "Installing and Running FreeBSD". Two of these have been reprinted
with corrections. I maintain a series of errata pages. Start at
http://www.lemis.com/errata-4.html to find out how to get the errata

Have you found a problem with the book, or maybe something confusing? Please
let me know: I'm constantly updating it.

FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE - ata0-master: FAILURE

2004-12-31 Thread John Bolding
Issue: FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE default boot method does not boot
Errors: ata0-master: FAILURE ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out

Work Around: boot to safe mode (meaning unattended boots do not work!)

Previous References:

http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/htdig/freebsd-questions/2004-December/067082.html

Yes, using safe mode does allow me to install FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE,
and I can boot using safe mode, but this means an
"unattended boot" fails since a human must select "3" from
the list of boot options (presented with the ASCII Beastie).

I have tried all of the suggestions:

   hw.ata.ata_dma="0" in the boot/loader.conf
   hint.acpi.0.disabled in boot/device.hints
  (i.e. hint.acpi.0.disabled="1")

I tried disabling the CD all together via the BIOS.
I have tried to remake the kernel without any ata support at all.

Nothing appears to make this beast boot in an "unattended boot" mode.

Freebsdmall.com does not respond to install support questions
(and I am tempted to return the CD set, but I using it now ...)

I want a simple "unattended boot", even if it is
"safe mode", without having to select the non-default
"safe mode" boot method "3".

Any clues out there?

Hardware: MS-9246 1U Rackmount (aka X2-102)
   http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=X2-102S3R&class=spd
Onboard NIC, Onboard SCSI, 2 SCSI disks, no raid, no ide.

At (default) boot time (failure), the message I do __NOT__ get is
  acd0: CDROM at ata0-master PIO4
and I get the ata0-master: FAILURE instead.

All told, I am not sure how to resolve this issue for a production machine
about to be CO-located (in about 72 hours).

Below is a listing of a 'safe mode' boot.

If anyone has any clues about this, please contact me somehow
(I am not a list member, so please send email, call collect,
send out smoke signals, anything!)

Regards to all. Happy New Year.

re portmanager, how to prevent upgrade of held ports

2004-12-31 Thread nbco
Hi list,

I am trying out portmanager-0.2.2, on a 5.3-RELEASE box.

I have openoffice-1.1.3.20040810 installed. I don't want to upgrade
openoffice at this time, as I don't have the space for a full compile
and will wait for a new package.

I have set openoffice to be held in pkgtools.conf in /usr/local/etc.
Portupgrade honours this setting. Portmanager doesn't, therefore every
time I attempt to run portmanager it tries to compile
openoffice-1.1.4.20041101_1

I have looked at portmanager and cannot find a way to prevent it
updating certain ports, and it doesn't honour the hold_pkgs in
pkgtools.conf.

Any ideas as to how to make portmanager ignore held ports?

This problem makes portmanager unusable for me, as it updates openoffice
first, so it never actually gets to the smaller out of date ports.

Many thanks in advance
.nbco

Hmm.. I setup all ports as described this
http://www.freebsddiary.org/cups.php, also I setup
print/hpijs port and copy all *.ppd files to /usr/local/share/cups/model
printer is connected and usbdevs show him -

 addr 2: PSC 2100 Series, Hewlett-Packard
addr 1: UHCI root hub, VIA
addr 2: USB 2.0 Card Reader, Genesys Logic

in cups web admin I setup printer, select device USB Printer #1, then
when I try to print test page nothing happens... what I do wrong?

It's good to be cautious. :-)
If you want to switch to the ports version of perl, then after you run make
install clean in the port, you will need to do the following:

Type "use.perl ports" at the commandline. This will switch perl from the
system version to the ports version. Until you do this, your system will
still be using the system version. Furthermore, you can always revert back
to the system version by typing "use.perl system" at the commandline.

After you do that, you will need to run "make reinstall" in any port that
you've installed that uses perl.

You can also install all the CPAN modules using the base system, so there's
no need to upgrade to the ports version unless you just want to. (I chose
to do that on a server I maintain, but it worked fine using the system
perl.)

I've noticed some memory allocation bugs with 5.6, so I'd just go straight

php modules

2004-12-31 Thread whitevamp
I didnt know where to post this to so im posting it to quistions@ and ports@

i have compiles and installed php 4.3.10 and i was needing to install pcre ,so
i did on the command line make PHP_MODNAME=pcre install
and then i noticed that it didnt install pcre it just compiled in support for
it so i did some looking around for pcre and found php4-pcre
so i installed it and when it got done installing it i got a message saying
that the
Libraries have been installed in:
  /usr/ports/devel/php4-pcre/work/php-4.3.10/ext/pcre/modules

( why dose it leave the libraies in the ports dir?? )

so i moved them to a folder for php to find more esaly and with out getting
wiped out when i do a portupgrade, and i set the module path in the php.ini
file
IE:/usr/local/php-modules
now in the php log file it saying this

so my quistin's are

1. should i have left it in the ports dir?
2. did i not move something that it needs ??
3. as sad above ( why dose it leave the libraies in the ports dir?? )
4. am i doing this right ?? or all wrong??
5. why am i getting this error ?

this is for an apache mod
the reason im trying to get this to work is becouse i have a CMF that is
complaining about Call to undefined function: preg_match_all()
and the coders sugested that i install pcre. wich dont make sence to me becouse
i didnt have it installed before i did a portupgrade on php and apache, any how
im bableing now.

Hi,

Make sure you have the linux compatibility on. If not, you can
install the package with pkg_add -r linux_base, then, everything
should be O.K.

This actually goes much better if you just install from the ports.
That's what I'm using and other than the configuration hoops, it works
perfectly.

Have you verified that the GeForce4 is supported?

Both are fine. Questions are for the general questions while ports are for
ports' questions.

You can install php4-pcre in ports/lang/php4-extensions. php4-extensions is a
metaport for all the other php additional supported features.

FreeBSD PNP OS = NO in system bios configuration?

2004-12-31 Thread John Conover

Should PNP OS = NO in the PC system bios configuration be used for
freeBSD?

How about assigning IRQs of the PCI devices in system bios?

Thanks,

John

BTW, the reasons for the system related questions is that I'm having
some stability issues in FreeBSD 2.5.1; runs for many hours of stress
testing, and then freaks out, with BSD messges like "system interrupts
have failed," etc., which is more like HW or bios configuration
problems. 2.5.1 has a history of stability, right?

Passing options to a 'make install clean'

2004-12-31 Thread rsh
I am trying to 'make install clean' of openoffice and do not want to
install Java.

I have tried several things to say no to Java but it always wants to try
to install jdk14, and this port is not user friendly with my amd64 system.

So how can I install openoffice without Java?

problem booting 5.3STABLE from USB2 flash drive

2004-12-31 Thread Jeff Stockett
Hello,
I'm hoping to use freebsd as a custom router. To minimize noise and failure
points, I was hoping to boot from a USB2 flash stick which have gotten dirt
cheap. I downloaded 5.3RELEASE-i386-miniinst.iso and burned it to CD -
stuck my 512MB flash drive into a USB port, and let the CD boot up.
Everything appears to work, in that the installer lets me partition and
format device da0 fine as well as copy over all the files (doing a "minimal"
base install), but after it finishes everything and goes to reboot, the
machine just hangs. After a hard reset, at boot time I get:

F1 FreeBSD
Default: F1
but then the box just hangs there locked up tight as a drum.
If instead of choosing the "boot loader" option during install, I choose the
standard "MBR" option after reset, I get:

No Operating System
Seems that the boot loader option almost works - but not quite. Does anyone
know what might be wrong. Possibly some sort of USB initialize timing
problem with the kernel?

FWIW, the board boots DOS fine off the USB key, so I know the BIOS/board are
working as intended. Thoughts?

Thanks, Jeff

ssh protocol in 5.3

2004-12-31 Thread Robin Becker
I have just upgraded one of my systems from 4.9 to 5.3 and even after
restoring my old .ssh folder it seems I cannot get ssh on a 4.9 system
to use protocol 1 with the 5.3 system.

Am I being stupid or must I go through the pain of creating a whole new
set of keys for protocol 2.

We use protocol 1 for legacy reasons ie we have a very old
implementation of ssh on our win32 PCs.

I have tried various .ssh/config options, but nothing seems to help.

There never was such a thing as FreeBSD 2.5.1. Are you sure you're not
using 5.2.1? 5.2.1 is experimental software and doesn't really have a
great history of stability. Upgrade to 5.3 (if that's the case).

Help w/ 3com net card on laptop

2004-12-31 Thread Dustin
I'm attempting to install FreeBSD 5.3 on an extra laptop I have over FTP, but I
have just one problem: I cannot get the card to work.

It's a 3com 3c575TX Fast Ehterlink XL Cardbus PC Card , which from here:

http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.3...6.html#ETHERNET

..looks like FreeBSD should support it.

The error goes something like this:

xl0: 3com 3c575TX Fast Etherlink XL Port 0x1000-0x103f IRQ5 at device 0.0 on
cardbus 0
xl0: couldn't map ports/memory
device-attach: xl0 attach Returned 6
cbb0: cardbus card activation failed

I've messed w/ the settings in the BIOS, ACPI is off, seems like the only way
to turn off PnP is to change the OS - this BIOS is goofy. I disabled the COM
and LPT ports to see if that would free up some IRQ's but no difference.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
D

Make sure that /etc/ssh/sshd_config on the 5.3 systems contains a line
'Protocol 2,1'. Then restart the sshd daemon (or just send it a
SIGHUP.) (The default value for this option was changed between 4.9
and 5.3. On 4.9 the default value is "2,1" while on 5.3 the default is
"2".)

Reading the sshd(8) and sshd_config(5) manpages carefully might prove
helpful.

>From 5.3 do ssh -1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can also set a protocol, 1 or
2, in the ssh configs, either globally in /etc/ssh ... or
~/.ssh/config.

You can also use both, at the same time. ~/.ssh/known_hosts and
~/.ssh/authorized_keys can have both protocol 1 and 2 records in the
same file; the identity files are different for 1 an 2, but have
different file names in 1 and 2, so can coexist in ~/.ssh.

I was reading through Michael Lucus's highly recommended
book 'Absolute BSD', and this is what is said on the matter:
"While you're in the system BIOS, set the "Plus and Play
OS" option to "no". This tells the BIOS to do some basic
hardware setup, rather than relying on the operating system
to do everything. Modern versions of Microsoft Windows
expect the hard to do as it is told, and hence expect full
access to the hardware. FreeBSD, on the other hand, expects
a system to perform as the hardware standards and specifications
demand, and hence can take advantage of some setup work that
is most easily done in the BIOS."
"Many devices (particularly network cards) will behave poorly
if you don't change this option."

Portmanager has no way to ignore ports that need updating,
but others have also requested this feature so I will implement it in
version 0.2.3. It may be a few weeks before it is ready because I am
taking advantage of the port freeze and making fairly extensive
changes.

There is one thing you can do in the mean time as a work around if you
still want to use portmanager:

If you were to move /var/db/pkg/openoffice-1.1.4.20041101_1 (assuming
that is the version you have installed) directory to someplace safe,
like in your home directory then portmanager nor any part of the ports
system would know openoffice-1.1.4.20041101_1 is installed. This will
only work for a port that is not a dependency for another port so only
if no other ports depend on openoffice-1.1.4.20041101_1 will this work.
When you want to upgrade it then move the directory back
to /var/db/pkg.

You can also create a ports/local/editors/openoffice-1.1which is a bit
more involved and way more elegant, I will be happy to explain only if
you are truly interested.

Check your samba configuration. You probably want to set local master=no. You
can also set os level=20, and domain master=no if you want to be extra certain.

You'll need to restart samba for this to take effect.

Re: Problems with MySQL and SNORT after Reboot

2004-12-31 Thread Mattias Björk
Hi,
Thanks for the fast response.
I did run "REPAIR TABLE event" from phpmyadmin and there where no
problems with that. No Error here.

But when I point my browser to my snort page and select the timeframe
for the alerts to all I get the error message after a few seconds:

Warning: mysql_query(): Unable to save result set in
/usr/local/www/snortreport/DB_mysql.php on line 38
Got error 127 from table handler

However if i select a day as a time frame it works and I can select up
to forteen days. If i select thirty days or every thing logged I get the
error above.

From phpmyadmin if I select the database named "snort" and I click on
the table "event" i get an warning/error message that are as following:

"More than one INDEX key was created for column `timestamp`"
Is that anything serious?
So I hope I have described enought to make any conclutions about this. I
have also restared both mysql and snort but that does not help either.

Thanks in advance and a happy new year!

number of ways (hardware support, feature support, etc) than the 4.x
branch. Try it yourself and see.

I never install anything that causes gcc to be rebuilt, if something
needs that it stays off my machines! Are you running an old FreeBSD
version by any chance? If so maybe you would be better off
going to FreeBSD 5-Stable which has a nice up to date gcc as part of the
base system.

iTunes server setup not going well

2004-12-31 Thread Timothy Luoma
Hello all. I'm trying to follow the instructions at
http://home.introweb.nl/~dodger/itunesserver.html

Here's where I hit a snag:
"After doing this, you can remove the mDNSResponder.shar file.
[did that]
"...Now you'll have to download Rendezvous.tar.gz from Apple. Go to
http://www.opensource.apple.com/projects/rendezvous/source/

[did that... I have downloaded Rendezvous.tar.gz and
mDNSResponder-58.8.tar.gz to /usr/ports/distfiles/]

"After doing this, go back to /usr/ports/net/rendezvous (if needed)
and type: make install clean"

BUT... but... there is no /usr/ports/net/rendezvous !
I thought maybe that I had to build mDNSResponder first, so I tried
that:

freebsd# cd /usr/ports/net/mDNSResponder/
freebsd# make install clean
===> Vulnerability check disabled, database not found
===>  Extracting for mDNSResponder-58.8
=> Checksum OK for mDNSResponder-58.8.tar.gz.
=> Checksum OK for mDNSdocs-1.0.tar.gz.
===>  Patching for mDNSResponder-58.8
===> Applying FreeBSD patches for mDNSResponder-58.8
4 out of 5 hunks failed--saving rejects to mDNSPosix/Makefile.rej
=> Patch patch-mDNSPosix::Makefile failed to apply cleanly.
=> Patch(es) patch-NetMonitor.c patch-Responder.c

OO needs to compile that version of gcc because it doesn't compile
with random other versions of gcc including the system compiler. As I
mentioned in private mail, even if you could get all the dependencies
built, I don't think OO itself has been ported to build on amd64, so
you're really out of luck here. You might be able to get an i386
version to run with some effort, but I'm not aware of anyone who has
tried this (let alone succeeded).

ports - ignore hosts that aren't responding?

2004-12-31 Thread Timothy Luoma
I've tried to install several ports that rely on gnu.org over the past
several days, and the first THREE attempts timeout. Here's one
example:

fetch: http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-5.2.1.tar.bz2:
Operation timed out

=> Attempting to fetch from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/.
fetch: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-5.2.1.tar.bz2:

=> Attempting to fetch from http://ftp.lug.udel.edu/pub/gnu/coreutils/.
fetch:
http://ftp.lug.udel.edu/pub/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-5.2.1.tar.bz2:
Operation timed out

=> Attempting to fetch from http://gnu.mirror.mcgill.ca/coreutils/.
Is there a way I can tell 'make' to (at least temporarily) not even try
to connect to the first 3?

Probably there is a better solution but I've had good results by
adding:

RANDOMIZE_MASTER_SITES=yes

Don't download it yourself, do make fetch, or just make install. Looks
like you are downloading a different version than has been ported. If
you want the port updated contact the maintainer.

Your'e welcome.
I think you have somethings not fully upgraded to have some of those
problems. I hear it is kind of a comman problem with big ports like
kde for some of the dependancies not to be built. Portmanager is a new
program I have found and like it. It is not as full featured as
portupgrade, but it is nice. Install it, it is a very quick compile,
less than a min. Then run "portmanager -s | grep OLD" as root. It
will tell you everything that is out of date, be sure to cvsup ports
and "cd /usr/ports && make fetchindex" first.

Did you rebuild x after you update to 5.3? You will need to. Try
portupgrade -fRr xorg.

If you want to optimize you programs have a look at /etc/make.conf.
You can check out /usr/share/example/make.conf first. The p pro stands
for pentium pro. It is very old, pre pII. It is also a default
setting to optimise for that can help most modern x86 processors. If
you want to set some make options here is mine, note you may need to
change the processor type.

everything is working, but I am using a combination of the two as documented
below.
Did I just 'luck out' or does apmd (sorta) by design work with the environment

-
/boot/loader.conf
  snd_maestro_load="YES"

 51 0xc169 17000linux.ko
So apm.ko is not loaded. However everything works. I got to this configuration
by accident (i.e., I forgot rc.conf). 'apm -l' works, 'apm -z' works and I can
resume okay.
FWIW...
I have experienced the same thing on my Dell Inspiron 5100. I'm not
currently running it that way, but was. Until I read that ACPI and APM
will not run together. Supposedly the last one up notices the first and
bails. So I opted for ACPI... which has left me wishing I was back with
both even though they are not supposed to work together.

I'm interested too, in other's opinions/explanations of this phenomenon.

off, it's easier for the local network to download from a local server,

Thanks for the info. All the results I could find off google were

Programming with Bourne or C shell

2004-12-31 Thread Michael Madden
I have most of my interactive shell experience using bash on Linux and shell
programing on Unix-like systems with Bourne shell. Since FreeBSD's default
shell is csh/tcsh, I was wondering if it's still considered an atrocity to
develop shell scripts with C shell:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/unix-faq/shell/csh-whynot/

Are most FreeBSD users still using csh or tcsh has their interactive
shell and sh for programming? I think it would be nice to use the same
interactive and programming shell for consistency.

Thanks,

It's been my impression (in other words, this is all speculation based
on my statistically-insignificant interaction with other FreeBSD
users, reading the mailing list, etc.) that most FreeBSD users have
Bourne shells (bash, ksh93, pdksh) for interactive use and scripting.
Old-school users occasionally use tcsh for interactive use, and almost
no one scripts anything with csh/tcsh.

I wouldn't read too much into the defaults of any program. Lots of
good UNIX programs have relatively poor defaults, in my experience.
In any case, you will always have some Bourne-based shell on anything
vaguely UNIX-ish, but may not have a csh-based shell.

the DMA mentioned was under PnP/PCI configurations => Resources Controlled
by in the bios but there the setting is Auto(ESCD). i tried al the options
there and it still stops at the same place...

Protected AAC files can only be played in iTunes, I believe.

Very well, did you have any specific questions, or were you looking for a

One thing I see in the openoffice lines is a reference to

Wasn't that the original name for the amd64 platform, before it was

Perhaps a problem?

Most FreeBSD shell scripts seem to be written for /bin/sh. Many FreeBSD users
seem to pick one of bash, ksh, or zsh for their interactive shell, and just
take a bit of care when writing scripts to use syntax which is
backward-compatible with /bin/sh.

If you're happy with bash, there's no reason not to use with FreeBSD as well.

News from several NNTP Servers

2004-12-31 Thread Sergei Gnezdov
NNTP clients I like (Emacs) work with one NNTP server at a time.

I use some free NNTP server, but its reliability is not the best.

So, I am thinking of collecting news from free servers, which specialize
on certain newsgroups. I don't know how to do that or what to use.

I also would like to collect/cache newsgroup messages on my machine, so
I can decide expiration rules.

I think I could use INN server, but I have no idea how upstream servers
are different from NNTP client connections.

Looks like you are downloading a different version than has been
ported. If you want the port updated contact the maintainer.
OK, I think I've got it working now.
Except that /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mDNSResponder.sh didn't exist
I copied /usr/ports/net/mDNSResponder/files/mDNSResponder.sh there, but
it clearly expects to be automatically configured by the installation
program.

#!/bin/sh
# PROVIDE: mDNSResponder
# REQUIRE: NETWORKING
# KEYWORD: FreeBSD
. %%RC_SUBR%%
name=mDNSResponder
rcvar=`set_rcvar`
command=%%PREFIX%%/sbin/mDNSResponder
mDNSResponder_enable=${mDNSResponder_enable:-"NO"}
mDNSResponder_flags=${mDNSResponder_flags:-"-b -n `/bin/hostname -s`"}
pidfile="/var/run/mDNSResponder.pid"
load_rc_config $name
run_rc_command "$1"
# end
There's no 'mDNSResponder' in any sbin folder, there is one in
/usr/local/bin/mDNSResponder, so I tried changing that line to

command=/usr/local/bin/mDNSResponder
but then I get
set_rcvar: not found
load_rc_config: not found
run_rc_command: not found
I suspect that may have something to do with this line:
. %%RC_SUBR%%
and I have no idea what that should be.
So I Googled "RC_SUBR mDNSResponder" and came across
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2004-September/
015760.html which suggested I use ". /usr/local/etc/rc.subr" which
doesn't exist (maybe that's where it was for 4.x?) it is now at
/etc/rc.subr so I used this:

. /etc/rc.subr
so now I can run
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mDNSResponder.sh start
without error
Does it work?
Well, we'll have to wait until I get to the office and check.
