Exactly. Instead of copying new mail to a Favorites folder or
displaying *all* Favorites folders, this folder only displays a folder
if there's new mail in it.

Do you have a MUA in mind?

You could give the build-in email client of Opera - M2 a try (pop3, imap,
rss, atom, newsgroup support). It saves emails only once, has very nice
filters, auto-identifies mailing lists. Unread messages have their own
folder, once read they go to the correct view. All messages are indexed
and saved in a database. Find-as-you-type is very nice and fast.

Active contacts/threads are put in a seperate view, so they can be found
easily. Sort/search by label you have given to an email or by attachment.
etc.

Just take a look here and test it yourself:
http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/mail/

BUT one thing is missing and might be the 'showstopper' for you, SMIME/PGP.
Hopefully this will be added in the near future, since they have already
changed the client a bit for Opera version 9.0.

Right now M2 is a good cross-plattform email client, when PGP will finally
be added it should be a _very_ good one.

I think you want boot_verbose="YES". verbose_loading only makes
/boot/loader itself more verbose.

A read-only fsck of a mounted filesystem will never come back clean,
since the filesystem's mounted :)

Actually, FreeBSD will support most boards with mainstream chipsets. But that
was good advice from Ted. I tried that same board a couple of months ago. I
had many of the same problems. After banging my head on that brick wall for a
few days I took it back. A high end board wasn't in the budget so I went with
a MSI KT-8 Neo which I have had 0 problems with.

some questions about fsck, loader.conf

2006-03-14 Thread Chris
Hi

I tried verbose_loading="YES" in loader.conf and expected the
/var/run/dmesg.boot to be more detailed but there was no change, what
does this switch do if it doesnt change the bootup dmesg output?

In rc.conf I have enabled fsck_y_enable="YES" to allow unattended fsck
fixes after improper shutdown but I have noticed there are some
problems remaining as shown by a read only fsck. Does the above
switch not fix all problems or is it the case the fsck bootup script
only does partial tests?

Can I do a full fsck test and fix on a remote machine without needing
a local tech to boot the machine in single user mode?

Thanks

Re: Thunderbird + Mozilla Suite

Andrey V. Semyonov wrote:

Mozilla Suite and Thunderbird are installed from ports.
___

Hi Andrey,

Yes it is possible. The first step is to check if the
proper configuration entry is present.

In Thunderbird, from the menu bar, choose
Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Config Editor.
In the filter bar, type
network.protocol-handler
Check the entries under Preference Name for
network.protocol-handler.app.http
If it is there right click on it and choose modify
Now enter the path to the file which launches the browser
you want to use. For a mozilla related program it is probably
under /usr/X11R6/bin/

For example, the Mozilla Firefox launcher is
found at /usr/X11R6/bin/firefox

(sorry, I'm running firefox right now so I can not say
with absolute certainty where the mozilla-suite binary
is located)

If you did not find an entry named
network.protocol-handler.app.http then
right click on any entry under Preference Name.
Choose New, String.
When you are prompted for the new string type
network.protocol-handler.app.http
When you are prompted for the new value enter the path
of the mozilla web browser launcher.

Follow the same procedures as above to enable support for https.
Everywhere you typed http above type https instead.

I hope this helps.

Apache appears to not really be starting?

2006-03-14 Thread Huy Ton That
Installed apache2.2

I launch via apachectl w/:

apachectl -k start -f /usr/local/etc/apache22/httpd.conf

Edited httpd.conf and pointed the ips to 127.0.0.1:81 as I wanted to use

Executing this I get no errors however apache doesn't show under ps (noticed
this since I tried to do a stop and restart and just received the message:

After doing a tail /var/log/httpd-error.log I get the following output:

Also I've tried replacing 127.0.0.1 with the the ip address for the incoming

FWIW, we have a TYAN dual opteron box, 4 x SATA drives, 1 RU, works a

I don't mind digging a bit; I actually lean towards quality. And I'm
not partial towards any one maker either. My main issue is in
identifying boards that will have their components recognized by
FreeBSD. Is there a secret resource I haven't found? Please oblige.

Thanks Jerry. I'm so paranoid about messing up the other OS on the HD
though. The installer's fdisk suggests an entirely different layout to
everything else I've seen:

Geometry 9729/255/63 = 156296385 sectors (76316 MB)
Offset Size(ST) EndName PType DescSubtype Flags
 0 63 62 - 12 unused 0
6359812205981282 ad0s1 7 fat 11
   5981283 13971447 19952729 ad0s2 8 freebsd 165
  19952730 5670 19958399 - 12 unused 0
  19958400 136337040 156295439 ad0s3 4 extended DOS, LBA 15
 156295440 6048 156301487 - 12 unused 0

If I just immediately 'Q'uit the darned thing will it not make any
changes to global drive geometry? It would probably take me several
days to get my win2k installation back to how it is now, if I lost it.

All I really want is for the installer to use the freebsd slice as is.

I'm tempted to just try UPGRADING but mergemaster always confuses me.

for a utility with will allow me to read a FreeBSD drive, in a USB chasis

I have found some utilities which will allow me to accomplish this on a

make work when using a USB chasis.

Need driver? What he should look for?

If your AutoCAD is anything like recent, you're running it under
Windows.

Au contraire, or however you spell it! I am running 2005 under wine.

You spelled it right. Beg pardon, I should have said that AutoCAD
*thinks* it's running under Windows. I'm sure one could get it working
under qemu or VMware as well. Point being that when you buy it you get a
binary whose name ends in ".exe".

One of the big appeals of AutoCAD (for me) used to be that it was
available *natively* for many different platforms, including MacOS, at
least one flavor of UNIX, and I think VMS, as well as Win/DOS. Those
days are long gone.

Any help for the OP, or are we just chatting?

Autodesk haven't supported any other platform since Release 13,
which was about 10 years ago.

I set up something like this years ago, using an HI DMP-61 with FreeBSD
3.2 or 3.3. What I did was to install Samba on the FreeBSD machine, and
set it up to 'share' the plotter (connected on an RS232 port) as a
printer. Then the Windows clients were able to see the plotter as a
networked printer, and use the native AutoCAD driver for that plotter.
The FreeBSD machine was pretty much acting as a print server for that
plotter.

Sorry to be so vague, but it was a long time ago. Hope this gets you
pointed in the right direction.

Still can't boot on 6.0-STABLE > Nov 2005 or 6.1-BETA

2006-03-14 Thread James Seward
Hello folks,

A while back (January) I posted to the list about a problem I had
booting 6.0-STABLE built with sources after about November 2005 on my
workstation.

Since that point, and including (I have now discovered) 6.1-PRERELEASE
(as my freshly built kernel identified itself just now), I can't boot.
At the point where the kernel should mount my root fs and continue
booting, it decides it can't see any disks other than fd0, and
presents me with a "mountroot>" prompt.

Looking through the scrollback, it correctly identifies my ata
controllers earlier in the boot process.

A boot -v (captured over serial) is available here:
http://sakaki.jamesoff.net/~james/dmesg-broken.txt

A successful boot is available here:
http://sakaki.jamesoff.net/~james/dmesg-working.txt

When I get to the mountroot> prompt, my IDE light is stuck on solid.

At the time I initially reported this problem I was running amd64. I
have since moved back to i386 (mainly for things like nvidia-driver
and win32-codecs), but the problem persists :(

My motherboard is an A8V-E Deluxe, and my disks are on both IDE and
SATA; the IDE disk plays no role in my FreeBSD boot (it has WinXP on
it). FreeBSD lives on my SATA drives. 5.3 and 5.4, as well as WinXP,
have no problems with the disks. I'm not doing anything funky like
RAID or geom.

I did try posting a PR for this a while back, but it never even seemed
to be recorded.

If I'm sending this request the wrong way, please let me know! I'd
love to help get this fixed so I can take advantage of the latest and
greatest on this machine :)

Thanks in advance,
James

When you subscribe to a lot of e-lists (I subscribe to about35) and you
get a lot messages coming in, you learn really quick about filter rules
and how handy they are.

I used sylpheed-claws a number of years ago and it was very good. I used
it for a bit. There is also evolution, I haven't looked at it in a

Exactly. Instead of copying new mail to a Favorites folder or displaying
*all* Favorites folders, this folder only displays a folder if there's new
mail in it.

Apple's Mail.app has this with smart folders, but I find it very
slow with mail folders containing thousands of messages.

Thunderbird is much faster than that, but I don't know of any way
to get this ability -- although there may well be.

The horde/imp webmail program makes it easy to create virtual
folders which are really stored searches allowing one to select
unread mail from one or more folders.

On the other hand, I read the vast majoriy of my e-mail on our
freebsd server using mutt in ssh from whatever machine I'm on.

interestingly enough, I recently switched from Thunderbird to
sylpheed-claws. I know it's probably not so active, but it seems a lot
more powerful, and it supports MH (working on getting the Maildir
plugin to compile properly). It (sylpheed-claws) reminds me of good old
XFMail, which I had used for a long while before Thunderb.

FWIW, I have 9 email accounts (a few with different identities). Work
related email is from an Exchange server - I tried Evolution + its
exchange plugin and it just wouldnt work, so I moved on.
Anyway, Work's IMAP cache is a symlink to a subdir in my GELI disk
(this is a laptop after all). Work's local copies are also in the GELI
disk.

For backing up on the client side, I simply rsync to another box my
~/.sylpheed-claws, my GELI md device and the tar ball of the local
copy my non-work emails (faster than transferring thousands of
individual mails - MH format...). This is part of my laptop backup
script (could be using dump, but i only need a small portion of the
filesystem... setting nodump in most of the box is rather silly)

> Or have I failed to understand something?

maybe u should start by reading the config file and following through
with each path mentioned,etc... it worked for me (tm) for
Thunderbird, (FFox) and sylpheed

good luck,

I think the original poster meant the virtual folders that only show
folders with new email - not email filtering (which is, I'd say, a
must have feature of any software worth calling itself mail client).

sylpheed-claws can do all this, as well as creating processing (as well
as filters, of course) rules (which I have NO idea how or what to use it
for ...but i does sound cool :D). supports IMAP and identities,
like thunderbird. IMAP is not a problem at all.

and I have all my folders with new email in a nice bright blue (vs.
grey for folders w no unread email, and black for folders with unread
email, but no new email)

PGP inline and SMIME works great too.

I set up something like this years ago, using an HI DMP-61 with FreeBSD

set it up to 'share' the plotter (connected on an RS232 port) as a

The FreeBSD machine was pretty much acting as a print server for that

I'm replying to you using Sylpheed, and it's a nice app, but I don't see any

Does it have the functionality, and I just haven't noticed it yet?

I used sysinstall to lay down the partitions, then did a minimal install, so it

Motherboard for new Socket 939 fileserver

2006-03-14 Thread Andrew Fremantle

Hi all,

I've been tasked with setting up a new FreeBSD network file server. I've
been spending the last day fighting an ASUS A8N-VM CSM motherboard, and
I've given up on that hopeless battle. The ACPI is horribly broken, the
ethernet and PATA/SATA aren't supported on FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE, FreeBSD
6-STABLE recognises the disk controllers but then hits a bug that
prevents it from using one of the disks, I've had enough. I was prepared
to tough it out with the ATA/33 limit on the generic controller support,
until a future release properly supports them, but this morning the
machine started throwing "DANGER Will Robinson" messages regarding the
SATA drives.

I have a preference for nVidia chipsets, but if there's something else
that will work and has decent FreeBSD support I'll take it.

Here are my requirements
Socket 939
At least four SATA headers
(preferably) At least two PATA headers
PCIe Gigabit Ethernet

Reliable ATA system operation on the board is a MUST! This machine's
primary purpose is going to be reading and writing those drives! Those
damned UDMA timeouts and other ATA problems I've seen cropping up
randomly over the last two years are NOT acceptable.

After troubleshooting the nVidia RAID on this motherboard, and reading
online about these "fake RAID" implementations, I'm pretty much planning
on sticking with FreeBSD's "Pseudo-RAID". Can anyone offer any feedback
on the reliability of FreeBSD's "Pseudo-RAID" system?

Just in case anyone's interested, here are the rest of the components
that will be used with the system.

Seasonic 430w S12 powersupply
Western Digital 80G PATA drive
Pioneer PATA DVD Multidrive
2 x Seagate 7200.9 300GB SATA drives (mirrored) in
a SNT-3141-SATA 4-drive SATA enclosure (Not sure who made this)

Any feedback would be much appreciated. I'm desperate to avoid jumping
to Linux on this one, because I know that will turn into a huge pain in
the ass later on.

This line defines what _version_ of the ports you want. "tag=." says
to get whatever the most updated version is. This is usually what
you want (for ports). For future reference, if you ever want a version
of the ports other than the most current, you'll change this line. Also
note that "tag=." is usually _not_ what you want when cvsupping FreeBSD

Delete files that have been removed from CVS from your version.

use-rel-suffix controls some bookkeeping that cvsup up does so it can
run efficiently. You probably want to leave that alone.

Re: Updating ports

2006-03-14 Thread Pat Maddox
Hi Lisa,

The supfile just upgrades the sources. You actually have to build and
install it for it to make any changes. Using the standard supfile,
you can just do portupgrade -arR and it will only upgrade your ports,
it won't touch the base system at all. Then when you want to upgrade
the base system, you have the sources available and can do that. But
don't worry, there's nothing wrong with having the most up to date
base source, even if you haven't upgraded in a couple months.

I use portsnap for updating my ports tree. I wish I could tell you
the advantages, but I've been using it for over a year now and don't
really remember to be perfectly honest :) Anyway, I run portsnap
nightly, and then do a weekly update of my base system source using
cvsup.

I wrote a simple article that shows you how to install and configure
portsnap, if you're interested.

Look at and edit '/usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile'
there you need to change the line with
'*default host=CHANGE_THIS.FreeBSD.org'
to the host nearest to you.

but that looks like something that is going to upgrade the entire system
(as I said - probably a good idea but I just don't want to do that now,
I just want to update my ports).

That supfile will only update your ports tree in /usr/ports.

The file /usr/share/examples/cvsup/standard-supfile e.g.
would update your files in /usr/src, your system's source tree.

Can't I just update the ports without updating the entire system?

Yes, see above.

I'ld appreciate it if someone on this list could straighten out my
thinking.

You're on the right track. Maybe check out the handbook again at:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html#CVSUP-CONFIG-FILES

You can use CVSup to update the source trees of both your system
(/usr/src) and your ports (/usr/ports).

So you have a cvsup file for each file tree, src->stable-supfile,
ports->ports-supfile. That's basically it.

1,000 Days Up Time Freebsd4.7

2006-03-14 Thread Martin McCormick
We recently had a FreeBSD4.7 system almost make it to 1,000
days uptime. It may have actually done it but it also appears to have
rebooted itself just as it reached 1,000 days.

Is anybody aware of any kind of counter overflow or anything
along those lines that might have caused the reboot?

Obviously a system that has been up for that long without a
break isn't too sick, but I can't imagine what happened. There are no
signs of anything being wrong. After it rebooted itself, it just kept
on ticking like it has for the last 2-and-a-quarter years.

I looked in /var/log/messages and found no tracks. The last
message was a routine message about the dhcp lease it had and then a
few minutes later, the next message was the copyright notice on the
kernel as the reboot started.

That FreeBSD is just wonderful, though. I know of some other
popular OS's that can't even dream of that much uptime.

Thanks for any useful information.

Can't I just update the ports without updating the entire system?

Yes. Look at /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile

You _are_ on the right track, and you can do what you want.

Thanks Bill. Duh, I was looking right at that and didn't see the
ports-supfile. I'll go take a look now.

Updating ports

2006-03-14 Thread Lisa Casey

Hi Folks,

I might be a bit confused here. If so, I'm sure you'll tell me about it ;-)

I'm running FreeBSD 5.3. I want to update my ports. So I went to the FreeBSD
handbook and started reading up on how to do that. According to what I read,
I need to install cvsup then create a supfile. OK, so far so good. I just
now installed cvsup-without-gui (I'm not running any kind of gui - this is
a server).

I don't want to update my entire system from FreeBSD 5.3 to something else
then do all the make world stuff (although it would be a good idea for me to
learn how to do that someday - I just want to update my ports). I got
started on this because I wanted to install webmin but I noticed that, in my
ports collection the version of webmin is 1.150 whereas the current webmin
port at Freshports is version 1.260_2. I figured it would be a good idea
just to go ahead and update my ports first before installing webmin so I
could install the latest version from ports rather than downloading the
tar.gz and installing it that way.

Next I need the supfile. I took a look at
/usr/share/examples/cvsup/standard-supfile (I think that's what I want) but
that looks like something that is going to upgrade the entire system (as I
said - probably a good idea but I just don't want to do that now, I just
want to update my ports).

Can't I just update the ports without updating the entire system? If so, am
I going about it the right way or am I just plain confused? If I am going
about it the right way then I think there's something about the supfile that
I obviously don't understand.

I'ld appreciate it if someone on this list could straighten out my thinking.

Thanks,

Lisa Casey

cbq not borrowing fully from parent queue

2006-03-14 Thread Wes Santee
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Greetings.

I'm running 6-STABLE using pf and altq/cbq to manage bandwidth on my
wireless adapter.

The setup from pf.conf is this:

altq on $ext_if bandwidth 54Mb cbq queue { internal, external }
queue internal bandwidth 53104Kb priority 7 cbq(borrow)
queue external bandwidth 896Kb priority 4 cbq { highq, defaultq, lowq }
   queue highqbandwidth 40% priority 3 cbq(borrow)
queue defaultq bandwidth 40% priority 2 cbq(default borrow)
   queue lowq bandwidth 20% priority 1 qlimit 300 cbq(borrow)

The internal queue is for wireless traffic coming from and going to the
internal network. The external queue (and its children) are for traffic
going upstream to my ISP. The "external" queue is set to my max
upstream bandwidth to my ISP, so it can't borrow from the root queue.
All the child queue's under "external" can (and should) borrow against
the available upstream bandwidth amount if available.

The problem is that packets in lowq are filling up the queue, even
though there is plenty of bandwidth available to borrow from the parent
queue.

Here's a snapshot from pfctl -vvsqueue:

queue internal bandwidth 53.10Mb priority 7 cbq( borrow )
  [ pkts:401 bytes: 216532 dropped pkts:0 bytes: 0 ]
  [ qlength: 0/ 50 borrows: 0 suspends: 0 ]
  [ measured: 0.0 packets/s, 0 b/s ]
queue  external bandwidth 896Kb priority 4 {highq, defaultq, lowq}
  [ pkts: 0 bytes: 0 dropped pkts:0 bytes: 0 ]
  [ qlength: 0/ 50 borrows: 0 suspends: 0 ]
  [ measured: 0.0 packets/s, 0 b/s ]
queue highq bandwidth 358.40Kb priority 3 cbq( borrow )
  [ pkts: 0 bytes: 0 dropped pkts:0 bytes: 0 ]
  [ qlength: 0/ 50 borrows: 0 suspends: 0 ]
  [ measured: 0.0 packets/s, 0 b/s ]
queue defaultq bandwidth 358.40Kb priority 2 cbq( borrow default )
  [ pkts: 7397 bytes:3230740 dropped pkts:0 bytes: 0 ]
  [ qlength: 0/ 50 borrows: 10 suspends: 9 ]
  [ measured: 1.0 packets/s, 4.16Kb/s ]
queue lowq bandwidth 179.20Kb qlimit 300 cbq( borrow )
  [ pkts: 41643 bytes: 48966175 dropped pkts:0 bytes: 0 ]
  [ qlength: 117/300 borrows: 31513 suspends: 6282 ]
  [ measured:21.1 packets/s, 193.23Kb/s ]

Notice that queue "external", the parent of lowq, has plenty of
available bandwidth. However, lowq has still got a backlog of 117
packets, and refuses to go over 193Kbit/sec. It is borrowing, but not
enough to keep the queue in check.

Is there a reason the cbq implementation in pf will not aggressively
borrow against the parent queue if the bandwidth is available? I had to
set the qlimit up to 300 because at 200 it was still dropping packets
even though there was *plenty* of available bandwidth to borrow from the
parent.

Cheers,
- -Wes

Yes, Kmail does filter folders, if you're talking about filtering
messages that come in from e-lists (such as questions@) and moving them
to a designated folder. The filters are easy to set up. The folders can
show how many messages are in the folder, how many are new and will
decrement the new filter count as they are accessed. It can also remove
duplicate messages from a folder.

It is one heck of an e-mail client and I haven't found anything to touch
it.

How about KMail then. It's SMIME/PGP implementation is very good (and it
renders signed content very nicely too imo) and works great with IMAP. It can
be comfortably used with the keyboard only (much more so than, say,
Thunderbird).

It doesn't filter folders, however it has a "Next Unread Folder" command,
which makes it directly switch to the next folder with unread messages in it.

This is why I asked, as this seems to indicate that /etc/rc.d/syslogd
has a bug in it. If that's the case, then said PR needs to be regarding
this script, and not the docs.

Problem with shoutcast port

2006-03-14 Thread Paulino Calderon
Hey.
I was trying to set up a shoutcast server on my freebsd 5.3 machine, for my
surprise there was alredy a port to it, so my only job was to cd to the
shoutcast port directory and make install, after that I wrote the
configuration file, chmoded it to the proper permissions, and ran it with no
warnings or errors, so whats the problem? It randomly crashes! the weird
thing is that no log file is created and the only hint it gives me is at
/var/log/messages : kernel: pid 27670 (sc_serv), uid 210: exited on signal
11.
Any idea of what may cause this problem?

Ive alredy tried on the official shoutcast forums and there are a couple of
persons with the same problem but there are no replies to their posts, so
any help you can give me guys would be really appreciated. Thanks

/etc/rc.d/syslogd does not support this at all. It explicitly sets
the program to start to /usr/sbin/syslogd, and I can not see any way
to override this without editing /etc/rc.d/syslogd

Have you looked at Sylpheed? I don't know how closely it will match
the behaviour that you're used to, but it talks nicely to every IMAP
server I've ever seen, and it turns the folders with new messages
red.

The capability is still there; it's just overridden by the syslog
startup script. If you remove the command="/usr/sbin/${name}" line
from /etc/rc.d/syslogd, then setting syslogd_program will work again.
There's already a default syslogd_program="/usr/sbin/syslogd" line in
/etc/defaults/rc.conf, so hardcoding it in the startup script was
unnecessary.

Considerations I can think of -

(1) Advantage of using -HEAD (-CURRENT): Updates to ports may include
security fixes.

(2) Disadvantage of using -HEAD (-CURRENT): It is possible, though
perhaps not likely, that an updated port would require something your
-RELEASE base system lacked.

It's unlikely to be related (libtool is basically just a compile
tool), so please try to identify what else changed to avoid confusing
the issue.

I don't think it is libtool related, but both Gnome and xorg had updates at

What does this "New Messages" feature do?

It's like Favorites, except it only displays folders that have new messages
in them. I have so many folders that it's a real PITA to have to scroll
through 20 that have no new messages in them just to get to 10 that do.

It also needs to be SMIME/PGP aware and handle IMAP gracefully (according
to the RFCs, not like MS crap.)

Hi all,

As stated many times befor, I am getting completely un-logged (not
logged
anywhere, whith everything pretty well on verbose or debug) lockups
on a
server of mine. One thing I have been noticeing is lots of log
entries like
this, from ipfw and kernel.

Has anyone seen these befor? Are they normal? are they a sign of
pending
doom?

FreeBSD 6.0 RELEASE

P.S. The lockups I am getting looks suspiciouly like complete
firewall lock
outs as the sustem just stops can't even get to it via the local
terminal.
Again, nothing logged anywhere!

It's unlikely to be related (libtool is basically just a compile
tool), so please try to identify what else changed to avoid confusing
the issue.

You need to configure the debugger and use it to obtain diagnostic
information about the state of the system when it is hung. See the

I don't have physical access to the server at the moment to try the

I tried
mv /boot/kernel /root/
mv /boot/kernel.old /root/
make installkernel

the folder and its files reappear in /boot but a reboot still shows
the custom config.

I also tried shutting down the server and powering it back up incase
it wasn't actually rebooting --- same result.

the output of make installkernel shows it is installing generic to /

cd /usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC; MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/usr/obj

install -p -m 555 -o root -g wheel kernel /boot/kernel

I have a 2200BG on this tosh A2 - some lockups, but couldn't pinpoint
it to the card (again, i've made the habit of ifconfig down before
suspend...) . No problems at all while running.

Actually thinking of looking into the components of ASUS laptops, as
well as those from pioneercomputers.com.au - have heard of some great

iwi (and its kin-folk) have been betting heavy work in HEAD over the
past week or two and, hopefully, things will improve. OTOH, I have two
colleagues using this card with Windows and they complain that it locks
up periodically and they have to disable and enable it to get it back,
so this may not be just a FreeBSD thing. There is also fairly new
firmware out (V3.0) which MAY fix some of these problems.

My wife has not been at all happy with her Latitude. Heavy and still not
robust. Unpleasant keyboard and very touchy touchpad. (This is from her
as I don't often use it.) I do love the 1600x1200 display, though!

For less expensive (and less powerful) ThinkPads, look at the R

Regarding the (apparent) removal of syslogd_program functionality in recent versions

2006-03-14 Thread Bill Moran

The rc.conf manpage states that syslogd_program= can be used to change
the program run for system logging. This is also mentioned in
/etc/defaults/rc.conf and in the pkg-message for the syslog-ng port.

It appears as if this capability has been removed from post 4.x
systems. The rcng script for syslog does not honor syslogd_program -
nor does anything else on a 6.0 system, as far as I can tell.

I was getting ready to write a doc PR, and I thought I'd ask about
it first. Does anyone know if there's a reason to put this
functionality back in? It seems to work just fine if I use
syslogd_enable="NO" and allow the script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d
to start syslog-ng

Thoughts?

As I understand it, release tagsare static. If you specify a release
tag, you get the ports as they were at the time of that release.
Ports don't branch with releases, so if you want updated ports, you
use "tag=."

Was the second slice /dev/ad0s2 made bootable - when you laid down
the partitions?

> I tried this, but upon reboot, I could see both installs. I was given a

The problem is probably that you copied it directly including /etc/fstab.
So, /etc/fstab still points to /dev/ad0s1a at the root (/) partition
and /dev/ad0s1b as swap, etc, etcThose need to be manually edited
after the dump/restore to be /dev/ad0s2a, /dev/ad0s2b, etc respectively.

Eileen, make sure your HP system is set to boot the CDROM as first bootable
device in the BIOS (section usually called Boot Device Priority), this is most
likely the cause of it.

Problems since the libtool upgrade

2006-03-14 Thread Paul Schmehl
Ever since the libtool upgrade (I'm not saying it's related), I have been
unable to run dual screens. I can run the same window on two screens, but
if I try to use dual screens, the box locks up hard. I'm not sure if this
is an xorg problem or a gnome problem.

What other window managers are capable of displaying dual screens? I
think, if I install a different w/m, I'll be able to determine if the
problem is with xorg or with the gnome.

Probably your whole 10 YRS of working on FreeBSD was on a P-II or AMD K6
running a workstation in your basement, or who knows where.

I contribute to this group and many other places as much as I can with my
experience and if you should check the archives you'll find my name pop-up
there many times. I also do other types of contributions to the FreeBSD
foundation and other organizations that utilize FreeBSD.

I didn't complain about the system reboots (did I?), there is definitely a
problem with the system rebooting, but that is my job to resolve it (whether
being hardware or FreeBSD itself) and YES FreeBSD does have its issues *BIG
TIME* too.

My post was regarding the whole concept of doing background fsck or foreground
fsck if they both cause the machine not to be usable for the duration of the
fsck.

I do appreciate a lot of people who take the time to address questions on these
mailings and the many more who post to various forums and message boards.

However, I don't appreciate sarcasm and useless remarks especially if they were
not intended to be humorous anyway.

Anyhow thanks for the help and great support !

Yeah... see the issue is, FreeBSD refers to itself as "the first slice" in
order to find itself... so you can backup to the second slice, but if you
need to use it, you'll have to copy the second slice over the first one.

Ok thank you. My conclusion was based on the combination of the
error-like messages ("port may not be enabled") and my experience with
FreeBSD (that it assigns /dev/cuaa{0,1} to its serial devices).

I'm having the same problem with new SATA Abit MBs. No matter what I do to
tweak the BIOS, I get your identical message. There is no active serial
port, even though I added a serial port card.

Really need it too as my APC UPSes need that serial port.

I've seen this problem posted before and wonder if anyone finally found a
solution?

Jack

You need to burn that iso to a cd, then you can boot from it and it'll
go into install.

It looks like your computer came with an 80GB hard drive. Do you have
only 1 hard drive, or do you have 2? If only 1, are you planning on
over-writing what's presently installed?

Which iso image do you have?

FreeBSD 6.0 lockups again.

Hi all,

As stated many times befor, I am getting completely un-logged (not logged
anywhere, whith everything pretty well on verbose or debug) lockups on a

this, from ipfw and kernel.

Has anyone seen these befor? Are they normal? are they a sign of pending
doom?

P.S. The lockups I am getting looks suspiciouly like complete firewall lock
outs as the sustem just stops can't even get to it via the local terminal.
Again, nothing logged anywhere!

Vulpes -

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, windows xp boots very well - I have actually
since removed ubuntu (good distro, but I don't really
like it and have temporarily gone back to winxp until
I can get freebsd working.)

So linux and winxp have both been installed and
removed a couple times with no problems. Freebsd is
the only one not wanting to play on this computer :-(

For some strange reason, the drive isn't noticed when
freebsd is on it (even when the boot manager is
installed, the boot manager doesn't even load??)
