This would theoretically result in them being dropped from the array. Despite this, I've heard successful uses of these disks via gmirror. (Granted, not the same as gstripe). Again, in theory, if one disk enters a 'deep recovery cycle' and is dropped from the array, and during that time another disks does the same the array is toast, right? Umm...what are the odds of this occurring? War stories? (The more I type this out, the more it's starting to sound like a bad idea.) Thoughts, ideas? -Modulok- YMMV, but. The disk is failing. Smartmontools, which is a great package, will only tell you want you already know, that the disk is failing. I would copy every thing important off that disk _NOW_ then go and get a replacement disk TODAY. It's possible that the disk may spin for another 2 months or it might burst into flames in the next 20 minutes. Either way the disk is telling you, "I'm sick". Also, what ever you do, do not power down that machine until you have copied off the data. Re: SAS Controller again

These are not supported in 6.2R, but it looks like they will be in upcoming 6.3R by the aac driver. I'd like to know about ground experiences with these cards. Do they work well? Does aaccli allow for production-time online check and array rebuild? Any trouble? bye & Thanks av. We use the Adaptec 3805 here at Juniper with great success. The 3805 and 15K SAS drives are damn fast. We are very happy with them, however there are a few caveat. * The Adaptec driver in FreeBSD 6.2 does not understand what a 3805 is. Adaptec has released an update to the driver in source code. It is on their web site. There are several people who work at Juniper who have the commit bit so we are going to try and get the updated driver into the tree before 6.3. In the mean time, in order to install 6.2 with a 3805 one needs to install the driver at install time off of a floppy or a USB driver. Then either copy the kernel driver into /boot/kernel or recompile the kernel with the new driver. It's a little bit of a pain but once it's you can forget about it. * The early versions of this card had a nasty bug in the firmware. When the card was put under a heavy load the card would stall and timeout. Adaptec has released an update to the firmware on their web site. The update is a bootable ISO image. Updating the firmware requires one to reboot the system with the bootable CD then updating the firmware using the supplied program. * Aaccli, which is in the ports tree, does not understand what a 3805 is. Adaptec has a replacement program on their web site but I have only played around with it and not spent a lot of time with this tool. I would guess that it has all the same functionality that aaccli had. While I do agree that FreeBSD does need work, the big pebble in my shoe right now is a journaling file system (try doing a fsck on a 1TB file system), FreeBSD does do SAN right now. At work (Juniper Networks), I have a FreeBSD 6.1-p10 system with a Qlogic card talking to a Hitachi SAN through a Brocade fiber switch. Works like a charm. We have done tests where we compared compiling all of our product on my SAN setup with compiling on local SCSI disk in a RAID 10. The SAN is only 6% to 10% slower. Considering how much easier it is to manage a farm of servers talking to a SAN instead of each server having it's own disk array, a 10% hit in disk performance is considered acceptable. I have a meeting setup for Thursday to talk to your people, Network Appliance, about SAN attaching to our new 6030 filers. The answer we keep getting, and I'm sure this is right, is this should work like a charm. SAN on FreeBSD does work. The only problems we have is 1) There is only 1 card that really works. We tried LSI cards but they were dodgy 2) can't seem to get dual channel working. Pulling a patch release using cvsup
I'm trying to figure out how, using cvsup, to pull a specific patch release. For example, FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE-p14. I've tried using the date of a specific patch from /usr/src/UPDATING but that does not work. The only problem I had with the T43 was the fact it did not have a proper serial port. I was told to use some silly USB connector which never worked right. Hello, I've got a DL 380/G5 as an evalu unit. It has 16 gig of ram. I compiled a PAE kernel but I'm finding that it is not very stable. It crashes during heavy disk activity, ie. portupgrade -rav. Is LDAP broken?
On 4.7-STABLE, cvsup as of 4 Dec 02, with the ports updated, I build openldap2 and try and start it. Nothing happens. Couple of hours of poking around, checking man pages and the OpenLDAP project web site and still nothing. Then I cd to /usr/ports/net/openldap2/work/openldap-2.0.25/tests and make test. I get this; bash-2.05a# make test ln: ./data: File exists *** Error code 1 (ignored) Initiating LDAP tests for LDBM... >>>>> Executing all LDAP tests... >>>>> Test Directory: . >>>>> Backend: ldbm >>>>> Starting test000-rootdse ... running defines.sh . ldbm Datadir is ./data Cleaning up in ./test-db... The environment variable, CLASSPATH, contains a list of directories and Jars that contain java classes. For example in my .bashrc I have the following; export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/jdk1.3.1 CLASSPATH=.:$JAVA_HOME CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr/local/share/java/classes/crimson.jar CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr/local/share/java/classes/postgresql.jar CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr2/home/jgrosch/MooseRiver/Java/Classes/mooseriver.jar CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr/local/jakarta-tomcat3.3.1/lib/common/servlet.jar export CLASSPATH There needs to be an environment variable, JAVA_HOME which points to /usr/local/jdk1.3.1. Of course, /usr/local/jdk1.3.1/bin needs to be in the environment variable, PATH. Hope this helps. Josef -- == Copyright(c) 2002 by Josef Grosch.
