processor eflags = interrupt enabled,vm86
Hi, I have a Gateway 920 server that I'm trying to load 4.10 on. I'm seeing an error that I've never come across before. It looks like it might in the processor flags, but I can't seem to find anyone with this issue---except a few guys with the same model server. No one seems to have the answer to the problem---maybe maybe most people wouldn't buy a Gateway 920 to put BSD on either...it's not my choice though. NOTE: I've tried 3 different CD images, serveral boot floppies, even some newer versions of 5.x, but they all get the same error. I've even tried it on several different 920s. They all have the same problem. I've looked through LINT and I can't find a reference to vm86. It looks like it's a cpu flag, but I don't see where to disable or change it. Any clues what's causing this or how to fix it? It happens right after the kernel get's loaded into memory. Here it is: Fatal trap 10: trace trap while in vm86 mode instruction pointer =0xf000:0xf842 stack pointer =0x0:0xff8 frame pointer =0x0:0x0 code segment=base 0x0, limit 0x0, type 0x0 =DPL 0, pres 0, def32 0, gran 0 processor eflags=interrupt enabled,vm86, IOPL = 0 current process = Idle interrupt mask = net tty bio cam trap number = 10 panic: trace trap Uptime 0s ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
VIA VT8237 woes
Hi, I'm having serious trouble getting my onboard VIA VT8237 IDE-controller working with FreeBSD 4.10R as well as with -STABLE (as far as I can tell, it's supported according to http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.10R/hardware-i386.html#AEN34). The mobo is a EPOX EP-859A7i (http://www.epox.nl/english/products/motherboard/8k9a7i.htm) with VIA KT400A and VT8237. The controller appears to be incorrectly (?) identified as "atapci0: port 0xac00-0xac0f at device 15.0 on pci0" (full dmesg below). The transfer mode is automatically set to WDMA2, which isn't exactly optimal, but more importantly: it results in SILENT data corruption! A chunk of data every gigabyte or so (sometimes more rarely, making it difficult to test if it works or not) written to the disk is replaced by seemingly random data. Setting the transfer mode to PIO4 makes the problem go away. In the archives there are some that report success with VT8237 and 4.10R, but it appears as if those don't refer to an onboard controller. A possibly clarification is offered by Mikeal Hubsch, regarding 5.2: http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=20040102204932.B93774-10 %40snaps.home&output=gplain. As a dirty quick-fix, I tried changing the chipid in the 4.10 sources: The controller was then identified as "atapci0: port 0xac00-0xac0f at device 15.0 on pci0", and the default transfer mode was set to UDMA100, although the silent data corruption persisted. In july Ion-Mihai Tetcu said that "VIA8237 + Seagates + FreeBSD -CURRENT is a deadly combination" (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=1918360+1921418+ /usr/local/www/db/text/2004/freebsd-current/20040711.freebsd-current). Should I just accept this to be the case for 4.10 stable/release as well? I haven't been able to try it with another hard drive, but I verified it with two identical computers (apart from amount of RAM). I have also tried replacing the IDE-cable, same result. For the record, I get roughly the same errors in OpenBSD 3.5 (running on the second machine, with a Maxtor hard drive), the "solution" is to not use DMA. I'd appreciate any help to get this working with 4.x. Thanks in advance! Below is a dmesg with a STABLE-kernel, booted in verbose mode. Copyright (c) 1992-2004 The FreeBSD Project. "amnesiac" is disklabel?
Hello... I have three hard drives in my system. One of them (the first) is the system disk. I'm trying to get the other two ready to be a mirrored volume. No matter which of the last two drives is last, that one always is listed as "amnesiac" when I do a disklabel on it: == [root@archive 13:44:07 root]# disklabel ar2 # /dev/ar2: type: unknown disk: amnesiac label: fictitious flags: bytes/sector: 512 sectors/track: 63 tracks/cylinder: 255 sectors/cylinder: 16065 cylinders: 3737 sectors/unit: 60036417 rpm: 3600 interleave: 1 trackskew: 0 cylinderskew: 0 headswitch: 0 # milliseconds track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds drivedata: 0 8 partitions: #size offsetfstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] c: 600364170unused0 0 # (Cyl.0 - 3737*) == What does this mean? Whichever drive is last, that's the one I cannot "disklabel -e" to set its fstype to "vinum". I can even mount /dev/ar2e because I had created a disk label on it when it was attached as /dev/ar1 previously. The problem seems to be accessing /dev/ar2 with disklabel. I've swapped cables and cards. I'm even currently using two cards (one ATA100 and ATA133). I've swapped the drives all around and the only constant factor seems to be ar2. With all three drives on one card (two master and one slave) or spread between the two cards (all three masters), as long as there were three drives, /dev/ar2 would be like this. Is the ar driver only limited to two devices? Thanks, pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
Re: "amnesiac" is disklabel?
So it seems that there's a problem with more than two /dev/ar devices, or at least more than two Promise-based /dev/ar devices. Does anyone know more about this or should I take this to freebsd-hackers? Difference between Vinum and atacontrol RAID?
A couple days ago, I asked on the -hackers list about a problem I was having with Vinum and my Promise-based controllers. Søren replied with how to do this by using atacontrol to build the volume. No Vinum seems to be required. I thought Vinum was FreeBSD's RAID system. If you wanted to do software RAID with FreeBSD, you needed to use Vinum. Now I find this out. Does that ATA subsystem have RAID support built in? (Since atacontrol just seems to control the ATA devices...) If this is so, what's the use of Vinum? When should I use one vs the other? How do Vinum and the ATA subsystem's RAID relate? Thanks, pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

Anyone know for sure about this? > Hardware based RAID is likely to be faster, particularly in the case > of parity calculations for RAID-5. (Not that many IDE controllers can > do RAID-5, but...) It would be, but the RAID on the Promise and Highpoint devices is not true hardware RAID. It's just software RAID with the drivers moved over to an EPROM on the card. I know from my own experience and that of other people that the Linux software RAID outperforms the "hardware" RAID of these devices. I'm willing to bet that the FreeBSD RAID at least comes close, if not betters the Linux performance. Hello George, If you mean 'packages' then start reading here : http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/ports.html You'll want to look at chapter 4.4 specifically. I prefer ports as you can customise the creation of the program to include or omit certain capabilities. I'm not sure which editor you need but here's a page that lists a few : http://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEditors As far as I know 'packets' are created using TCP/IP which is very basically how data is transferred across a computer network. MTA advice ??
I have a hosted domain that recently changed their mail filtering. I am not happy with the new setup and am considering setting up my own. Looking for tips on setting up something on my freeBSD 6.1 box. My ISP is cablevision IO. Not sure what they allow, ie: whether I can have my hosted domain set to use my cable IP as a MTA, or if I have to do some kind of end run around cablevision to get a MTA set up locally. Also looking for advice on which software would serve me bet in this instance. Using RocketRAID 1810A (hptmv) as an ordinary controller?
I'd like to use my HighPoint RocketRAID 1810A as an ordinary SATA controller without any RAID functionality. This works fine out of the box for all sectors of the disk except the last ten, which are hidden. The controller is identified as: hptmv0: mem 0xfbf0-0xfbf7 irq 18 at device 2.0 on pci1 RocketRAID 182x SATA Controller driver Version v1.12 (Sep 17 2007 18:32:12) I believe the 1810A is identical to the 1820A, except that it has four channels less. There's a new driver out (v1.16, CVS has v1.12) but I don't think the changes are relevant to the issue at hand. The setup I'm using is GELI inside a GEOM label, that is: glabel label mylabel /dev/da1 geli init ... /dev/label/mylabel Due to the fact that the hptmv driver hides the last ten sectors I can't move disks between the 1810A and an ordinary controller: a disk configured on an ordinary controller will have its metadata (and more) hidden, and a disk configured on the 1810A will have its "last two sectors" (one for the label, one for GELI) ten sectors away from the end of the disk. Questions: 1. Looking at the src/sys/dev/hptmv/array.h there's a SAVE_FOR_RAID_INFO which is set to 0 if ARRAY_V2_ONLY is defined, otherwise it's set to 10. The only other references to ARRAY_V2_ONLY are in gui_lib.c, where the capacity is once again reduced by 10 sectors if the option is in place. There is a SUPPORT_ARRAY option, but it doesn't seem to affect SAVE_FOR_RAID_INFO. Compiling with '#undef SUPPORT_ARRAY' seems to be terribly broken and I don't know how to fix it. Some of the errors can be fixed with a little '#ifdef SUPPORT_ARAY':ing, others are less obvious to me. I also tried compiling with ARRAY_V2_ONLY=1 and also with SAVE_FOR_RAID_INFO=0 forced, but neither seems to work, the capacity is still ten sectors short. Anyone have ANY ideas on how to get access to the last sectors when the disk is connected to the 1810A, or is it prevented by the hardware? It's OK if it sacrifices RAID functionality for all channels. 2. If a disk has been formatted while connected to the 1810A, how would one use it in a different controller, one which does not hide the last ten sectors? The disk has no bsdlabel. I suppose I could chain ten glabels, but that's just silly. 3. Should it be impossible to access the last sectors using 1810A, do you have any recommendations of an ordinary SATA controller, or a RAID one which optionally does not hide any sectors, and works fine with 1TB disks on FreeBSD (ideally on 6.x)? All ideas and comments are appreciated. This is fine for me %90 of the time for my personal work...if this were a box dedicated for production use I'd obviously spend a fair amount of time planning for the future and partition my disks accordingly. the idea of having a large /usr/ partition is that this is generally where the alot of the systems source code lives as well as the ports tree...this can take up alot of room as time goes on if you are not carefull. No disklabel, but it still boots
I have a disk which apparently has no disklabel, but still boots and mounts several partitions, and I'm puzzled as to how this can be. at which point does it fail...does it not boot, or do you get to sysinstall? if you get to sysinstall then you can goto another VT and run a dmesg from there i believe. i guess it's a moot point as you've moved to 5.2.1...if you are happy with the 5.x branch maybe you should test out the 5.3RC's -p On Fri, 22 Oct 2004 09:46:37 -0700, Benson Wong <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Um, I can't do a dmesg since I can't installed FBSD. > The chipset is Intel E7520 > > The BIOS does detect the cards. If you are lucky to have hot-swapable disks a power cycle is not even neccessary. now if you have the money/space for multiple disks you it may worth looking at RAID 5, which will give you decent i/o and decent fault tolerance. or you can start playing with stripping disks togther in LUN's then mirroring set's of the LUN's together but that is usually an expensive route (for disks, controllers and high-speed interconnects). as always the specific man pages for which ever implementation are the best sources for info. 5.3RC1 - /etc/defaults/rc.conf - netfs_types & nfsv4
I ran into this problem while mounting a netapp with nfsv4 during a reboot. Should /etc/defaults/rc.conf have "nfs4" in the "netfs_types" list? I know I can add it to the "extra_netfs_types" variable under /etc/rc.conf, but if it's stable code, then it might be wise to add it into the defaults before -RELEASE comes out. Re: 5.3RC1 - /etc/defaults/rc.conf - netfs_types & nfsv4
Let me explain this a little better. I know that I shouldn't need to edit edit /etc/defaults/rc.conf because /etc/rc.conf overrides the default. My question is should this be added into the CVS tree so people don't run into this problem while putting an 'nfs4' in /etc/fstab. If I were to have this in my /etc/fstab: nfstestclient-1# cat /etc/fstab # DeviceMountpoint FStype Options DumpPass# /dev/ad0s1b noneswapsw 0 0 /dev/ad0s1a / ufs rw 1 1 /dev/ad0s1e /tmpufs rw 2 2 /dev/ad0s1f /usrufs rw 2 2 /dev/ad0s1d /varufs rw 2 2 /dev/acd0 /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0 10.10.10.252:/vol/vol1 /vol/vol1 nfs4 rw,noatime,-s,-i,-b 0 0 nfstestclient-1# and I reboot the box, during bootup, my machine would errorout: ...dmesg... This is due to the fact that the system is trying to mount the NFSv4 filesystem before the network stack is up (as per /etc/rc.d/mountcritlocal). If NFSv4 is stable code under the 5.3-tree, then it may be wise to add 'nfs4' to '/etc/defaults/rc.conf' under the 'netfs_types' option. Now I'm not exactly sure if NFSv4 client support is fully stable because I believe it might be issuing a MNT_IGNORE flag, I'll look at the source to verify. They seem to work pretty well in a RAID5 config, altho I would not suggest using them in a stripe. The cache on the controller is just too small. You may see some negative impacts of the small cache in a RAID5 config under heavy I/O loads but with RAID5 slower I/O performance is to be expected. I believe the Adaptec IDE cards have a larger cache on the board, altho I'm not %100 on this. On the bright side the 3ware cards are pretty common and the "twe" driver seems rock solid on 4.x. RAID 5 will not give you the best throughput, also the 3Ware cards do not have much onboard cache (as do most "pro-sumer" IDE RAID cards). If you are really concerned about limiting all bottlenecks I would move away from IDE RAID and goto SCSI controllers with large amounts of onboard cache. not only will you gain the added benifits of quicker disk I/O with SCSI RAID but I think you find a much more reliable system in the long run. Also I'd suggest testing this first w/o SMP enabled (not sure if SMP is even that helpfull with hyper-threading IMO) and secondly test with AICP disabled as well. I may even go as far as running the system w/o SMP and hyper threading enabled for testing purposes. Doing this will help limit the variables at play here, and is generally considered good debugging practice. Support is good, and is pretty scalable. It's been a while since I've had to work with it, but from what I remember it's a decent platform for SMB's as well as ISP's. That is if you do not have the man-power/resources to build and admin a Postfix or Sendmail solution. It's also pretty trivial to add calander support, and spam/AV filtering, has a pretty decent scripting API (in PERL if I remember correctly) and a web-based client is included. As for large scale MTA's, I still think postfix or sendmail are really your only sane choices. They are both quite flexible, and do not lock you into one hardware/OS which some would consider a good thing. -p -- ~~o0OO0o~~ Pete Wright www.nycbug.org NYC's *BSD User Group ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Running 2 wireless cards
Hi all, Old 233mhz Vectra, FBSD v4.5 I'm struggling to get 2 Orinoco Silver .11b cards to run on FBSD v4.5. Each card is in an ISA adapter. The box does nat through the wired NIC to the world. (3Com 3C905 card) One wireless card is set up as the 192.168.10 network, the second being the 192.168.20 network. The problem I'm having is getting the *second* card to work. I can ping it, the lights are on, but the card is not talking. I've "wicontrol'd" this thing to death... trying every conceivable combination of settings, still with no luck. btw: I'm trying to talk to it using a Dell laptop running W2k with [another] Orinoco Silver card (same cards in the FBSD box). Here are the relevant parts of my config: - /etc/rc.conf ---> natd_program="/sbin/natd" natd_enable="YES" natd_interface="xl0" natd_flags="-dynamic" gateway_enable="YES" firewall_enable="YES" firewall_script="/etc/rc.firewall" firewall_type="OPEN" firewall_quiet="NO" firewall_logging_enable="YES" log_in_vain="YES" # and here's the stuff for the PCMCIA adapter pccard_enable="YES" pccard_mem="DEFAULT" portmap_enable="YES" accept_sourceroute="NO" # script to configure first card (wi0) /usr/local/sbin/wireless.sh [[these are my wicontrol parameters]] # script to configure second card (wi1) /usr/local/sbin/wireless1.sh <<-- end of /etc/rc.conf --- --- kernel config file --> # PCCARD (PCMCIA) support device card # The first pair of lines are for direct assignment # The second pair of lines are for polling mode #device pcic0 at isa? irq 4 port 0x3e0 iomem 0xd #device pcic1 at isa? irq 5 port 0x3e2 iomem 0xd4000 device pcic0 at isa? port 0x3e0 iomem 0xd device pcic1 at isa? port 0x3e2 iomem 0xd4000 << end of kernel config snippet --- I've experimented with direct port assignments... cards seem to both "come alive" either way. Currently running in polling mode. /etc/defaults/pccard.conf ---> # Lucent WaveLAN/IEEE -- Dual Wireless NICs - test # card "Lucent Technologies" "WaveLAN/IEEE" config 0x1 "wi0" ? config 0x1 "wi1" ? insert /etc/pccard_ether "wi0" start insert /etc/pccard_ether "wi1" start << end of /etc/defaults/pccard.conf snippet relevant lines of dmesg output ---> pccard: card inserted, slot 0 pccard: card inserted, slot 2 wi0: at port 0x240-0x27f irq 3 slot 0 on pccard0 wi0: Ethernet address: 00:02:2d:2b:4c:6d wi1: at port 0x280-0x2bf irq 5 slot 2 on pccard2 wi1: Ethernet address: 00:02:2d:0a:dd:7c << end of dmesg output snippet --- The *only* thing I've noticed is a slight difference in what echos to the screen when the cards "come up" during bootup. The sequence I see/hear: - tone when wi0 comes up - a line echos to the screen similar to the wi0 line in dmesg - ~10 seconds later a second line echos spelling out config information of the interface (not the config of the card) - tone when wi1 comes up - a line echos to the screen similar to the wi1 line in dmesg - ~10 seconds later something like "pccard running" (or some simple two word message) echos These latter lines echoing to the screen (the final line that shows for each card during bootup) do *not* show in dmesg (sorry... I'm a beginner at this, so I don't know if I'm describing this correctly). There is definitely a difference in what I'm seeing on the screen during bootup for the 2 cards. Card wi0 *always* works -- and I have *never* been able to "talk" to wi1 no matter what I've tried. Any suggestions for this rank beginner? Advice greatly appreciated thx Pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

Since the first card wi0 is in BSS mode, (it has to be to communicate with the AP1000 that is my repeater 10 miles away), I can't ping that card from my laptop unless I hop it over to ad-hoc mode (that works fine though if I do). I can't ping the second card from "outside" no matter what I've tried. :-( Thanks Pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
Re: Running 2 wireless cards
Bob Johnson asked: >>So when you ping the second card, you're turning off WEP on your laptop? _ _ _ _ Most definitely - never have it on, as a matter of fact. WEP is only running to [marginally] secure the link between wi0 and the AP that's 10 miles away. I've yet to ever have a problem with wi0 (the 192.168.10.x network in this case). It's wi1 that I can't "talk" to. :-( Pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

Xfree86 install goes bad w/FreeBSD 4.62 & 4.7 ISOs
I've tried installing FreeBSD 4.62 and 4.7 (from ISOs I've burned) on a box I've previously had 4.5 running fine (Xfree86 and all), and with both of the newer versions the Xfree86 install bails out when trying to start the GUI config (right after configuring the mouse) . . . . . . but this works fine on 4.5 anyone with any insight on what might have changed and/or how to fix it ? frustrating disklabel problem
Hello, I'm trying to set up a vinum mirrored plex on my 4.7-STABLE (cvsup-ed as of yesterday, 1/3) system. I have 3 30GB drives. Currently, only the first disk is being used. This disk has all the system along with all my digital photos and videos. I'd like to mirror the other two 30GB drives and move the digital photos and videos there, so that if one drive were to die, I'd still have these important pictures and videos. There is one (I hope) bit of strangeness about this system.I was initially using a Promise FastTrack 100 (pdc20267 chip) card. Since I was having problems with this, I recently got a cheap Maxtor adapter card. This Maxtor card looks to be a relabeled Promise card with the pdc20269 chip. The problem below is the same, regardless of which card is used. The system disk is connected to channel one on the card. The other two disks are master and slave on channel two. This is what FreeBSD shows on boot: == atapci1: port 0xe800-0xe80f,0xe400-0xe403,0xe000-0xe007,0xdc00-0xdc03,0xd800-0xd807 mem 0xd580-0xd5803fff irq 11 at device 15.0 on pci0 ata2: at 0xd800 on atapci1 ata3: at 0xe000 on atapci1 [snip] ar0: 29314MB [3737/255/63] status: READY subdisks: 0 READY ad4: 29314MB [59560/16/63] at ata2-master UDMA100 ar1: 29314MB [3737/255/63] status: READY subdisks: 0 READY ad6: 29314MB [59560/16/63] at ata3-master UDMA100 ar2: 29314MB [3737/255/63] status: READY subdisks: 0 READY ad7: 29314MB [59560/16/63] at ata3-slave UDMA100 == I used /stand/sysinstall to create a slice on each of the mirror disks and to label each with one huge partition. I wanted to see the labels first, so I typed "disklabel ar1" and it showed me: == # /dev/ar1c: type: ESDI disk: ar1s1 label: flags: bytes/sector: 512 sectors/track: 63 tracks/cylinder: 255 sectors/cylinder: 16065 cylinders: 3736 sectors/unit: 60034842 rpm: 3600 interleave: 1 trackskew: 0 cylinderskew: 0 headswitch: 0 # milliseconds track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds drivedata: 0 8 partitions: #size offsetfstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] c: 600348420unused0 0 # (Cyl.0 - 3736*) e: 6003484204.2BSD 2048 1638489 # (Cyl.0 - 3736*) == The strangeness starts with ar2: == # /dev/ar2: type: unknown disk: amnesiac label: fictitious flags: bytes/sector: 512 sectors/track: 63 tracks/cylinder: 255 sectors/cylinder: 16065 cylinders: 3737 sectors/unit: 60036417 rpm: 3600 interleave: 1 trackskew: 0 cylinderskew: 0 headswitch: 0 # milliseconds track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds drivedata: 0 8 partitions: #size offsetfstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] c: 600364170unused0 0 # (Cyl.0 - 3737*) == Even if I power down the machine and change the jumpers on the mirrored drives so that master and slave are swapped, I get the same values for ar1 and ar2. (Also kind of strange is that, while these drives are the same model, whatever one is the slave has 3737 cylinders, while the master always has 3736 cylinders.) If I try to edit the label of ar2 with "disklabel -e" (even if it did show the same label as ar1), I get the following error: "disklabel: Operation not supported by device" Any ideas about what's wrong or (more likely) what I'm doing wrong? Since I can mount the e partition on ar2, I'm guessing that the label info is there, but disklabel cannot see it for some reason. I guess I could just edit the label on ar1, then swap master and slave again, and edit the label on the new ar1 so that both should have fstypes of vinum. I'm not sure if vinum would work after this though. I'm assuming that I should be able to see the labels on both ar1 and ar2, so I want to try to fix this problem first. Now where's the fun in that? :) Seriously though, I have a few reasons: 1. I want to learn how to use vinum. 2. From my Linux experience (I'm much more experienced with Linux), I learned that most lower-end IDE RAID cards (Promise, Highpoint, others?) are really just software RAID with the software part in a program on the card. Linux's software RAID is usually higher performance than the RAID that's on the card. I figure vinum is probably better too. 3. I didn't want to be locked into one hardware vendor's RAID implementation. This machine is mostly just a bunch of spare parts thrown together. I'd like to be as free from hardware tie-in as possible. Granted, 1 is my primary reason, but 2 and 3 are factors (albeit minor). I'm using the RAID card because it was (at the time) the only IDE adapter that I had that supported UDMA 100. I bought this other adapter hoping that this disklabel problem I'm seeing is a hardware problem. It doesn't seem to be, so I'm probably returning the new adapter shortly. pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

any quick pointers for how to go about setting up ssh though ipfw on a gateway/router running nat to one of the internal machines ? (FreeBSD on both the router and internal machine) after a quick search of the available resourses (Google/BSD, mail archives, etc) I'm thinking it should be easier that this ? iDOT iBox Slim PC
Does anyone have any experience running one of these little beasties? http://www.idot.com/TheStore/Desktop/555Spec.asp?Product.id=555 For $259, you get a cute tiny fanless case, 128MB RAM, 20GB IDE disk, USB 1.1, serial, parallel, some flavor of accelerated graphics with S-Video and composite, audio in/out, mic in, and 10/100 ethernet. They'll pre-install Lindows, but obviously FreeBSD would be nicer. Anybody tried this one out? What works? What doesn't? I'm particularly interested in the CD-RW option. -- Pete Gontier <http://www.pete.gontier.org/> "Well, there, I met crazy Doctor Low Blood Sugar; now what?" -- Powers To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
Re: iDOT iBox Slim PC
I found a page for the chip set for this machine: http://www.viavpsd.com/product/epia_mini_itx_spec.jsp?motherboardId=21 My reading of: http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/5.0R/hardware-i386.html ...does not indicate goodness. The OpenBSD story is slightly better; it claims to support ATA. It seems not entirely unreasonable to assume that many functions of the chip set are clones, more or less, of popular chips, but without getting my hands on the machine so I can boot from CD and run dmesg, I'm wary. And in any case a clone still must demonstrate its quality. Maybe it's time to break down and check into Linux. -- Pete Gontier <http://www.pete.gontier.org/> "I'm not exactly in the mood for Mozart and all THAT kind of goings-on." -- InSoc To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

I'd have sent this to Stijn directly, but his SMTP server thinks I'm a spammer. Good call. He's definitely using an EPIA, so it sounds like its basics are OK. It's not quite the same motherboard, but it uses the same chip set, so I'm going to pretend it's the same. :-) He did have to do some heinous hacking to make the video work with X. I've sent him email requesting a report on anything else he's learned since starting with these machines. -- Pete Gontier <http://www.pete.gontier.org/> "My advice to any rock band is this: If you can't do it right, do it anyway. I can't see how your server would be involved in this sort of problem. People I've talked to who've worked on Java VMs say they get a bad rap. They blame the perception of applets as being unstable on browser developers, who supposedly do a bad job of hosting applets. I have no idea whose side to take on that issue, but gather data on which browsers are causing trouble as well and you may learn something. Another thing to look at since it seems that the problem is isolated to DSL clients is how those clients are connecting to DSL. If most of them are using a USB-to-DSL device, consider whether their driver is having a bad interaction with Java, etc. -- Pete Gontier <http://www.pete.gontier.org/> "One of her recent paintings, 'Interring the Terrier', 1993, which appears to show a small headless dog being stuffed inside a red armchair by two frogs and a sardine, sold at auction for $21,000 -- a record price..." -- Busch and Silver, "Why Cats Paint", p55 To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

(please tell me this is just a dream, and this thread really isn't happening and I am not participating...) ++ 28/12/02 08:45 -0500 - Harry Tabak: | I am not sure which list is best for this issue, hence the cross | posting. I believe spam and anti-spam measures are security issues -- The list appropriate for this is [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I'm not sure this even belongs on a FreeBSD mailing list. | I recently discovered, and quite by accident, that a FreeBSD ported | package -- spambnc (aka Spambouncer or SB) -- was blocking mail from me | to an unknown number of businesses and individuals on the internet. I'll | probably never have to correspond with most of these people, but I'm a | freelancer -- this may have already cost me a job. [Dear reader, don't | be surprised if you or your clients are also blocked. I strongly suggest | that you check it out.] It's a port. A 3rd-party package, FreeBSD does not control, but provides if a user wants it. It is not FreeBSD's position to say "this port does poorly" -- that is up to the user. If somebody blindly installs this port without looking at what it actually does, or knowing it blindly blocks mail from large IP blocks, that is the user's problem. Unfortunatly, we can't control the IQ of our users. If my IP block was listed in spambnc, and I couldn't communicate with someone because they chose to use spambnc without knowing the semi-evil things it does, quite frankly I probably am lucky I don't have to communicate with said person. | me. They vouch for Inflow. They don't recommend it, but for a fee, my | service could be switched to a different PVC, and I'd get an address | from a different carrier. But of course, the new address could be | black-listed on a whim. If it's that important to you, do it. You have discovered the big problem in spam filtering and mail flow on the Internet. It is discussed over and over on more appropriate lists (spam-l, inet-access, nanog, etc). The conclusion is eventually the same every time: yes, in a perfect world, we could only block the evil spammers, never block a legitimate mail, and there would be no war. If somebody chooses to install this software, their loss. Or maybe they will block more spam than legit mail, and they don't mind. I really hope we don't have to rehash this topic on a freebsd security list, because it's completely unrelated to freebsd. --pete To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
