Hello I am running Apache.0.53 on FreeBSD 4.11 and get this error when trying to stop Apache apachectl stop /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libexpat.so.5" not found, required by "httpd" So i searched archives and googled everywhere to find a solution but have discovered nothing. So did what i thought made sense and set out to reinstall a freshly cvsuped version of Apache. Things have changed alot since i last updated Apache. The Apache2 port has been replaced with the Apache20 port. I cannot just do a simple make deinstall and reinstall to update never the less determined to solve my problem I try a make configure on new Apache20 port which will update me to version 2.0.55. However much to my dismay the port spits out this error I tried a make and got the same error config.status: include/ap_config_auto.h is unchanged config.status: executing default commands sed: 1: "s,%%FTPUSERS%%,$FreeBSD ...": bad flag in substitute command: 'v' *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/www/Apache. disk errors help!!
My freebsd 4.11 system has been subjected to a power failure and seems to have many disk errors something about soft updates and not being able to read certain sectors it comes up with the standard single user pick your shell command and tells me to run fsck manually. I have run it several times but the system keeps comming with ad0s4 marked dirty which is my /usr partition. Sometimes i get a resetting device ata0 timeout error. What should i do of course i have no current backups for this system and the most important thing is retrieving my users data it would be great if i could get the system to boot up but if i have to reinstall no biggy as long as i can get most of my data back. ps i promise to do remote backups nightly for the rest of my life. -- Computer King/CaNMail http://www.computerking.ca http://www.canmail.org Sales, Service, and Hosting Email, Data, and Web Packages Ask about web design specials Affiliates http://www.computerking.ca/pages/links/affiliates/affiliates.htm -- If you eat a live frog in the morning, nothing worse will happen to either of you for the rest of the day. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Re: ipf not working correctly???
Ok thank you for your reply I have followed the newest handbook to the letter did you read my email?? which part is incorrect the ipf stuff is comment out of my kernel and also turned off in rc.conf.I have had to re enable ipfw in the kernel to get natd and my server to work properly again. If i remove firewall and ipdivert options my server will no longer route packages to my LAN. I will recompile my kernel one more time with no firewall option at all and comment out all the natd and ipfw lines from rc.conf just to humor you and because i am desperate for this to work. Note i have already tried this but will try again. also you can have both enabled however i do only want ipf for now. fbsd_user wrote: Your first problem is you have ipfw and ipf both turned on in kernel and rc.conf. You can only have one firewall on at a time. Remove all "firewall" and ipf statements from the kernel and recompile or just use the generic kernel. Then remove all "firewall" and "natd' statements from rc.conf. Then go back and read the FreeBSD handbook section on firewalls it's been updated to give detailed instructions on what to do. Follow then to the letter and you will be all set. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of RYAN vAN GINNEKEN Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 3:58 PM To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: ipf not working correctly??? Hello all i use FreeBSD stable 4.11 and wish to use built in ipf version 3.x something.i have been using ipfw with type set to open however i have recently been attacked and need to beef up security. I have followed the basic setup that is in the freebsd handbook and read through the world famous ipf howto lots of times. Currently I have the below options compiled into my kernel the docs I have read say you do not need to compile ipfilter options into the kernel to use it. Re: dumping a samba directory
Thank you this solved my problem guess i will have to use a different prog like tar do you have any recommendations on which type of archiver to use. Dump is not able to work on directories. The "atom" for dump is an entire filesystem. As a convenience, you can give dump the mount point, but it actually bypasses the normal filesystem code and talks to the device file directly - it just looks up the mount point to get the device. It understands the filesystem datastructures on its own and interprets them as much as necessary to build it's directory and datablock list. So - if a directory isn't a mount point - if it doesn't show up in a "df" or "mount" list as a type "ufs" and "local", dump can't operate on it. Dump is create, really awesome at what it does - but it doesn't do anything else. :) It is really different from tar or cpio or any of the other programs that go THROUGH the filesystem code rather than bypassing it. Re: packet pass through vs ftp -- performance weirdity
Happened to me once needed to set the the speed of the nic card in rc.conf can not remember how to do it but it is in the man rc.conf page and solved my similar problem. Looks something like this if i can recall ifconfig_xl0="inet 209.155.173.22 something about manually setting the speed and mode of the card " for me it had to do with the card not negotiating it parameters properly and i had to beat it into submission with manual overrides. glanced through the rc.conf man page but it is to long for me deal with right now the setting are in there somewhere. Gary Aitken wrote: I'm seeing some weird network performance I don't understand. If I sit at an NT box and using a web browser, go through my fbsd 4.10 firewall to someplace out in the world through a slow dsl connection, I get download speeds of 20KB - 45KB/sec, pretty much the max my DSL connection can deliver. The nt box is connected to the fbsd box over a 10Mb/sec full duplex crossover cable for test purposes. If I ftp (shell window) or use a browser to ftp from the fbsd box itself, I see a max speed of something like 8KB/sec. This makes absolutely no sense to me, given the relative speeds of the network connections, which I would have thought was the limiting factor. The fbsd box is a p200, 128M, single 7200rpm 9.4ms seagate ultra scsi drive, 10MB/sec negotiated xfr rate. Data used for testing was ~8MB file in /var partition, don't know how badly fragmented. Is passing packets through the firewall and ipfw rules that much faster than an ftp access? Ideas for where to look for what's slowing things down? Re: apache permission problem please help
Ok as anyone reading this thread knows i have huge mess on hands. Have found that if i set the all the users dir to 701 chmod -R 701 home then go into each users home directory and set the the www directory to 751 cd /home/user chmod -R 751 www then change the group permissions of this folder to www chown -R :www www apache works again This is all great but what a pain there must be an easier way as i have many users and do not want to go through this process for all of them. This seems like a secure method i think or would the /usr/local/www/user with a symlink be more secure. I run a stock freebsd system and do not really what users poking around have heard about chrooting as an another option for this I am very confused need some guidance. side note I also have all my users in one directory and it is getting large would like to move some of them into new directories like maybe webclients and mailclients but i moved one and had to modify the permissions all over again and update the password database and oh what a nightmare will take me days. SICK SERVER
I use freebsd 4.8 stable as a server it runs many services or used to, Apache, bincimap, postfix, just to name a few. It seems to run natd and route packets ok to the internal network that it is attached too. However I does not seem to be functioning properly as a web server or email server. Mostly what i use this machine for is a backup nameserver and email server but none of these services are functioning correctly. I can still login using my ssh2 program but cannot figure out what is going on please can someone help me troubleshoot this machine.
The modification to the apache2.sh script I sent you last time sould force that script to always run 'apachectl startssl' itself, so that shouldn't be the problem. Hmmm... I think that perhaps the problem arises from when the apache2.sh script is run. I'm guessing that the 'Seeding PRNG' line is significant -- it aparently means that there is no random data yet available from /dev/random at the point when apache is started up in the boot sequence. As you're running 4.9, that can be cured by telling the system to use some appropriate IRQs as sources of randomness. First run: % vmstat -i and look for the IRQs where there are a lot of interrupts generated. Not the 'clk' or 'rtc' interrupts, as those are clock ticks, firing at regular intervals, which is worse than useless as a source of randomness. I find that irq12 (psm0 -- the mouse), irq1 (atkbd0 -- the keyboard), irq11 (mux -- multiplex: but this is network activity mostly) and irq15 (mux -- multiplex again, but disk activity mostly) work well for me, but you will have to choose 2 or 3 or 4 suitable IRQs on your own system to harvest for randomness. Then add them to /etc/rc.conf rand_irqs="1 11 12 15" Then reboot. (See rndcontrol(8) for more details) With luck, and a following wind, there will be sufficient system activity during startup that there will be sufficient random data available to prime the PRNG used by OpenSSL, which should let apache start up automatically. Must have something to do with mergemaster and the new etc files someone please help. when i try to ping google.ca i get cannot resolve google.ca :host name lookup failure doing an ifconfig i get no inet or subnet just the active status my firewall stuff in dmesg looks like this IP packet filtering initialized, divert enabled, rule-based forwarding enabled, default to deny, logging limited to 100 packets/entry by default seems like a firewall problem not getting anything unusual in my /var/log/messages please any hints would be appreciated ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

RESET FIREWALL WITHOUT REBOOT
hello group I need to know how to stop and start my firewall rules without resetting my computer as I am on ADSL and have a dynamic ip that I do not want to change. seems to change mostly when I reboot mostly. so here is the dilemma I run bind apache bincimap postfix and a few others it is my only server right now and it cant go down because if I do not get my clients emails I go bankrupt. I what to set up a firewall and have compiled the necessary items into the kernel did this when I first set up my system many reboots ago options IPFIREWALL options IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE options IPDIVERT I have created a file called rc.fw4 and I have set my rc.conf #ipv4 firewall firewall_enable="YES" firewall_type="/etc/rc.fw4" firewall_script="/etc/rc.firewall" firewall_quiet="NO" IS THERE A WAY ACTIVATE ALL THIS WITHOUT A REBOOT ALSO IS THERE A WAY DE-ACTIVATE ALL THIS WITHOUT A REBOOT IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG WHICH USUALLY DOES WITH MY FIREWALL RULES www.computerking.ca QUALITY and SERVICE first. ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
