error message

2012-11-25 Thread emmanuel ilunga
Hello,

By ignorance, I named the host: "machine0.example.com" (just following what
I saw.)
Every time I reboot, I get: machine0# Nov26 04:37:03 machine0
ntpd_initrest[2008]:host name not found: 0.freebsd.pool.org
I get this error, unless I enter my login info; and after I had entered my
login info, if I don't do anything else right away, this error message
comes back.
And the time is wrong too.
Also, I received 4 installer discs: 2 installers and 2 important packages
(2 for amd64 and 2 for i386), how do I read the appropriate Important
Packages disc in?

Thanks.

pppoed error message?

2004-01-15 Thread Bikrant Neupane
Hi,
I'm trying pppoed in freebsd-4.9. It is working fine. I can connect from
Win98, Win2k and winxp using Raspppoe. However I'm getting lots of message in
my pppoed.log. It seems as if pppoed is responding to some request. But I'm
not able to find out what it is. I get these message in ever 1-2 seconds !!
Also, i've attached the output of tcpdum that i ran on the interface connected
to the wireless APs.
I'm starting pppoed from command line with this systex:
/usr/libexec/pppoed -d -P /var/run/pppoed.pid -a WiZoooM -l default xl1

ps ax shows more than 10 instances of running pppoed service.

Please wrap your lines around 72 chars. See
http://www.lemis.com/questions.html

What version of Apache are you running? What modules does it have installed.
Answering those questions will narrow down the problem and you can start
researching it in more detail. Also, looking through your http access
and error logs to correlate times will help tell you what's causing the
problem.

This can also happen with software optimized for a different CPU than it
is currently running on.

It may also be the case that the wrong CPUTYPE is/was specified in

atapicam error message

2005-01-17 Thread Galanaki, Dimitrios
Hello All,

I am referring to the standard non-critical kernel error message:

cd0: Attempt to query device size failed: NOT READY, Medium not present

This occurs when one compiles the device atapicam to access the atapi CD
through the SCSI interface. In addition to this message there is a very
annoying 30 something second delay.

1) Does anyone know the origin of this message?
2) How do I get rid of it without having to put a CD in the tray before a
boot?

I have been google about this problem for quite a while but with not much
luck, so any information would be appreciated.

"Could not look up internet address

The message suggests adding to /etc/hosts, I've looked at the file and

Where are you running pine? If you're logging in directly on the
machine, setting TERM to 'cons25' is likely correct. If you're running
X-windows, try using 'xterm' or 'vt100' as the value of TERM.

divxPlayer error message

Hello,

I recently installed FreeBSD 4.4 from a CD, and used CVSup to upgrade to 4.7
Release (I must admit I'm quite impressed). Anyways, I read an article by Dru
Lavigne about playing video files on FreeBSD, and installed the divxPlayer
port. However, any time I run it, I get this error message:

/usr/X11R6/bin/divxPlayer.bin: error while loading shared libraries:
libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or

I found a port in the contrib directory called "libstdc++" and installed it to
no avail. Does anyone have any ideas? I appreciate any help :-)

Thanks!

This is wrong -- example.com is a special purpose domain-name reserved
for documentation. You need to choose yourself a proper domain name or
use whatever your ISP provides. However, it has no bearing on the other
problem you cite:

What's happening here is that ntpd is trying to lookup
0.freebsd.pool.org in the DNS, and failing. This implies that DNS is
not working at all for any of the applications on your system: ntpd is
just the most vocal about complaining (and it will keep retrying and
complaining for a long time).

Examine the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and check that you can lookup
names in the DNS using host(1) or dig(1). Fix that if it doesn't work
and try again. If it does work, then maybe there's a problem with
routing or your resolv.conf being dynamically generated during the boot
sequence: such things can be fixed, but we'd need to know a lot more
about the particulars of your systems in order to provide correct advice.

Cheers,

Matthew

Even though this has nothing to do with the error message you
got, the name "example.com" is intended for _examples_ and not
for actual use. It will usually be found in documentation and
has the meaning of "change this to what applies in _your_ case
if you follow this example".

Typical suggestions could be "machine0.local" or "fbsd9.localdomain".
If _may_ be possible that your ISP requires you do enter a
specific host and domain name, or your setting requires this.
There might be rules you have to follow. Besides, _you_ will
decide about the name.

You can change this information easily in /etc/rc.conf, it's
the following setting:

hostname="."

You could also provide corresponding entries in /etc/hosts.

> Every time I reboot, I get: machine0# Nov26 04:37:03 machine0
> ntpd_initrest[2008]:host name not found: 0.freebsd.pool.org

The error message indicates that the name of the "time server"
(for NTP), called 0.freebsd.pool.org, cannot be resolved to an
IP. You should check your Internet connection and the setting
for the resolver in /etc/resolv.conf. Can you access other
machines on the Internet?

This is what you should be able to do:

% host 0.freebsd.pool.org
0.freebsd.pool.org has address 64.99.80.30

> I get this error, unless I enter my login info; and after I had entered my
> login info, if I don't do anything else right away, this error message
> comes back.

That's normal as NTP tries to make a connection to the specified
server as long as it's running. You'll find the NTP related settings
(ntpdate, ntpd) in /etc/rc.conf, plus examples and explanations
in /etc/defaults/rc.conf.

> And the time is wrong too.

Of course the time is wrong: It could not be adjusted because the
required Internet connection to obtain the current time could not
be made.

You can manually set the time using the "date" command.
See "man date" for details.

> Also, I received 4 installer discs: 2 installers and 2 important packages
> (2 for amd64 and 2 for i386), how do I read the appropriate Important
> Packages disc in?

According to what architecture you're using (i386 _or_ amd64),
you would probably use bsdinstall to deal with those discs
(at least the older installer, sysinstall, could be used
to install packages from the CDs or DVDs, so I assume this
functionality would also be part of bsdinstall).

The discs contain precompiled binary packages that you _can_
install (there is basically no need that forces you to install
all of them!) by using the system's package management command,
pkg_add (resp. pkg add). Simply mount the disc and install what
you need. Those discs are typically provided for offline use
when you cannot download software from the Internet.

I assume you're using FreeBSD 9 already. In this case, refering
to The FreeBSD Handbook about the steps of installation might
be a good idea:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/bsdinstall.html

I've got no deeper experience with bsdinstall so far, that's
why I can't be more specific, sorry.

Either you typed the name wrong, or copied the error wrong. The actual
entry in the example /etc/ntp.conf is 0.freebsd.pool.ntp.org (note the

kdialog error message

2012-12-06 Thread Jerry
FreeBSD 8.3-STABLE
kde Platform Version 4.8.4 (4.8.4)

I am attempting to create a custom action in "claws-mail". The action
command line reads:

| kdialog --msgbox "Characters: $(wc -c)"

This works fine except it also issues an error message:

--- Ended: kdialog --msgbox "Characters: $(wc -c)"

the shared cache. This *should* be essentially impossible. :(

kdialog(26489)/KSharedDataCache: Unable to perform initial setup, this system
probably does not really support process-shared pthreads or semaphores, even
though it claims otherwise.

kdialog(26489)/KSharedDataCache: Unable to unmap shared memory segment

Since this works on other OSs, it appears to be a problem with FreeBSD.
Can anyone elaborate on it?

I have tried different switches, and tried deleting the dependency,
nevertheless, the error message always reappears after doing an update.

Can anyone describe to me what this message is referring to and how to

15 seconds, perhaps? As in
options SCSI_DELAY=15000# Delay (in ms) before probing SCSI

in the GENERIC kernel?

You can cut down that delay safely unless you have other, slow, SCSI devices.

Why bother? It's a boot-time informational message, and it's
correct. There are lots of other messages about the state of the
system when you boot, too; I suppose it would be possible to come up
with a way to provide for a less verbose boot (the same way that you
can currently request a *more* verbose set of boot messages), but the
utility of such a "feature" is low enough that no one has been
inspired to provide it.

ssh is usually started as a daemon during bootup by /etc/rc.d/sshd, not
via inetd. Just comment those inetd.conf lines out again.

inetd was complaining that it couldn't listen on port 22 because
another process (sshd) was already there. I'm not sure about the
uncommenting bit.

Milter-sender Error Message

2004-04-17 Thread Martin McCormick
It looks like milter-sender is working although I have not yet
seen it reject a message, but I am seeing an error message which isn't
listed in the documentation and I am curious as to what is wrong.

The message minus the time stamp is:

: Milter (milter-sender): local socket name /var/lib/milter-sender/socket unsafe

There is no /var/lib directory, but when I create one, nothing
changes so it is presently not there.

Thank you.

Invalid Partition Error Message

2003-12-05 Thread Rafi Lurman
Hi, I am trying to install FBSD 5.1. I have two hard-drives, both on the primary IDE
controller, one as a master and one as a slave drive. Sysinstall went fine, but when I
reboot, I get a Invalid Partition Table error message and I can't boot it. Here is my
layout...

Two 30GB drives. On drive one I have:
/ - 7GB
swap - 1GB
/home- 22GB

Second drive:
/PersonalFiles - 30GB

What did I do wrong? As I recall Fbsd doesn't need a separate /boot partition like
linux does.

getting libexec error message

2003-08-23 Thread Peter Elsner
Greetings, I have several servers running FreeBSD 4.7 and 4.8.
All are also running Lone-Tar for FreeBSD as the backup software.
Today, I updated one of the machines from 4.7 to 4.8, and now for
some reason, I'm getting the following error message when trying to
run Lone-Tar.
/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1 /usr/lib/libcam.so.2 undefined symbol "__stdoutp"

Now in the past when I had this particular error message (or a similar one),
I simply installed the compatibility libraries from the 4.7 or 4.8 CD.
And all started working just fine. This time that wasn't the case.
Last week, I updated 2 other servers from 4.7 to 4.8
and Lone-tar works fine on both of those machines.
I'm stumped as to what would have caused this particular
update to fail.

ELF Interpreter error message

2003-10-04 Thread Michael Dunham
I am running FreeBSD-Current. I decided to try openoffice 1.1. I downloaded
the package and it has installed ok. I asked on the openoffice list and got
the user setup command ( "openoffice-1.1" ) but when I issue the command as
a user from the command line, I get the following response:

ELF interpreter /libexec/ld-elf.so.1 not found
Abort trap

This reponse repeats three times. This seems to be a common problem but I
don't see a specific fix anywhere. I have seen that it may require a new
make to the current cvs.

Any suggestions of ways to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Maybe by patching or rewriting cpio. :-)

The cpio archive formats cannot support files
over 4 gigabytes, except for the ``odc'' variant,
which can support files up to 8 gigabytes.

And cpio has a -c option (equals --format odc), maybe
you can hand this over from pax?

The error isn't from fbsdmon, the message is from the weekly periodic

before fbsdmon - rebuilding the whatis database.

While I know the error originates from an openssl item being renamed

sure why it still tries to find the old man page.

You should try posting this to the freebsd-acpi list instead, including
the full /var/run/dmesg.boot and details of your hardware (make, model);
I've not seen an 'INSYDE' ACPI BIOS before, but others may know of it.

The first ACPI Error message indicates not being able to access the
Embedded Controller (EC), which among other problems that may cause, is
why ACPI can't get information on your battery status [\\_SB_.BAT0._STA]

There have been recent commits to acpi_ec.c and other ACPI code - you
could try booting 8.2-BETA1 from a CD or memstick to see if that helps?
- otherwise you're likely to be asked to provide info on your machine's
ASL etc. Best to be well prepared first by studying:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/acpi-debug.html

What can be the cause of this problem?

Thansk, that does appear to have fixed it.

Good catch!

Error Message on Boot

2005-11-21 Thread Gerard Seibert

Running FreeBSD 5.4, I receive this error message while booting up:

Updating KDM configuration

Information: reading old kdmrc /usr/local/share/config/kdm/kdmrc (from kde

= 2.2.x) Information: old kdmrc is from kde >= 3.1 (config version 2.3)

This message appears everytime I boot. I have the latest version of KDE
installed. Is there anything I can do to correct this?

Postgres Startup Error Message

2007-03-25 Thread Gerard

I occasionally receive this error message when booting up:

Mar 25 08:28:24 scorpio postgres[756]: [1-1] FATAL: the database system
is starting up

Since it is an intermittent error message, I am unable to track down what
is causing it or how to fix it.

Any suggestions?

Those look like they are from portmanager, it was corrupting +CONTENTS
files a few versions ago. Make sure you have the newest version 0.3.9_7 then
run portmanager databases/p5-Class-DBI-mysql to clear it up. pkgdb can be
used to quickly find which other files need to be cleared up.

Take a look at $PREFIX/etc/php.ini and $PREFIX/etc/php/extensions.ini. You
may have duplicate module entries.

The following error message suddenly appeared after I booted up my system.
The PC is connected to a small LAN. I Googled but was not able to find out

RE: phpMyAdmin - Startup Error Message

2005-07-02 Thread John Brooks
Without going into "why would you want to use this"...

The error looks to me like a mysql authentication error, which would
mean that you either failed to set up the correct account information
in mysql or you failed to configure phpMyAdmin with a valid account.

Find the phpMyAdmin config file and make sure you entered the correct
mysql user account. Then check the mysql db to make sure that the correct
user account exists.

I get this every time I perform a dump on a non rewinding device, and
then start another tape write (on a SLR tape).

Doing a "mt eom" between commands makes the error go away, but I

Yes, I figured out that I had not set the 'Options' directive correctly.
I corrected it, and got SSI working. However, I now have a slightly
different situation. I wanted to get the date formatted correctly on my
site. I tried this, but it does not work correctly:

the date is still displayed in the long format, along with the time. I
do not understand why. I copied this directly from a site that was
demonstrating how to use SSI to display the date or time in any format
desired. For some reason, it does not work.

Those assume that your web server is setting DATE_LOCAL in it's
environment, and that it's paying attention to what you set timefmt to be.

not display. I will work on that problem at some future date.

Been having this message too, but since it's a non-critical issue I
haven't looked at it until now.

The message comes from running "genkdmconf" to update your KDM
configuration. The latest KDE has installed
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/genkdmconf.sh which runs the "real" genkdmconf in
update mode every time you boot. I'm not exactly sure why this is
necessary, since the files really only need to be updated if/when you've
changed your configuration or upgraded KDE. If the messages bother you,
move (or remove) genkdmconf.sh from rc.d. Personally, since I now know
the messages' origin I'll just ignore them.

Thanks. I had already figured out what was causing it, and have

I have no idea why it is being run on every boot either. It does seem

I've "always" seen it on my machines and assume that it's normal. In any
case, you'll have more luck asking it on a PostgreSQL mailing list.

I had a similar problem before with an older version of PostgreSQL. The problem
was that the rc script was waiting for input from the user. It was waiting for a
password. Depending on how you set up your PostgreSQL, it might ask for a
password on startup.

It might help to post the versions of PostgreSQL and FreeBSD you are using.

I checked on the postgresql forum and received a reply. It appears that
a program is attempting to query postgresql before it is started. I
think it was dovecot. In any case, I reconfigured the rc.d file for
postgresql to start sooner in the boot process. That eliminated the
problem, or at least it appears to have done so.

It means another computer on the same LAN is using your same address

How are you invoking procmail? I'd be surprised if you didn't find
that this message comes up whenever procmail tries to process a
message for the user with uid 1002. Is the procmailrc specified by
hand for that user, perhaps from a .forward file?

I found the problem. The path to the use did not start with a '/'. I
checked the password file and discovered it. That simple error had gone
unnoticed for three months until I installed Procmail.
