There's been some contention between AOL and the Gaim project for a long
time. Initially, it was typically spelled GAIM (all caps), but that was
too close to AIM for AOL's taste, so they only capitalized the first
letter -- making it Gaim. Apparently, that wasn't good enough, either.
Now it's Pidgin instead.

I guess the only downside to the new name is that I can't make "I've got
Gaim(game)!" jokes about it now. Well, I could, but they wouldn't make
much sense.

Well the portforward has to be done on the router, and the clients need
to know which ports they "own" on the inet ip. It's part of the file
sending protocol (at least icq and irc work that way)
So a portforward table which defines which ports are forwarded to which
ip is imho the only option.

If it's not directly you have to forward ports to the client pc for
direct connections (like file sending)

My box at home is connected to the net via a DSL router. The box has a

Portaudit merely reports on security vulnerabilities in the ports.
Portaudit will not prevent the install of a vulnerable port. The port
itself does that, by being marked as FORBIDDEN in the Makefile, because it
has a vulnerability.

You can configure portaudit to ignore the vulnerability in that port, but
that won't solve the problem of trying to install the port. To install the
port you must either update the port (if it's out of date) or install it
using DISABLE_VULNERABILITIES=yes when you make the port.

Yes. At this point, you must update everything that depends on pango
(and probably glib20 as well). Your best bet is to go to
http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome and read the upgrade instructions.

If you're running a 5.3-BETA, you can get the latest OOo packages from
your local FreeBSD FTP mirror after you complete the 2.6 upgrade.

Ports and Gaim

2004-09-12 Thread Craig Perry
Hi all,

I upgraded the ports tree and installed a few things, everything went ok untill I
installed gaim. As soon as it went in, the menus in gnome went funny, ie the
applications menu went to about 2 pixels wide, so I logged out to log back in again
hoping that would fix it, unfortunately gdm no has no menus and I can't type anything
into the username field etc. So I'm now locked out of gnome/gdm and can't log back in.

The only dependancy that wasn't up to scratch for gaim was pango, so I updated that,
now I assume it is this that has buggered gnome.

What is the easiest resolution, upgrade gnome to 2.6? I don't fancy a reinstall of the
os, I just compiled open office 1.1.2 from scratch and can't be bothered waiting for
that again :o)

Thanks in advance,

Craig

Re: Gaim-Encryption

2004-08-07 Thread R. W.
Things will be easier if you install (and use) sysutils/portupgrade

It's best to use /etc/make.conf for world and kernel settings, and for
general compiler settings; and use /usr/local/etc/pkgtools.conf for
port settings. Anything in make.conf is seen by every build, but
portupgrade reads per port settings from pkgtools.conf and passes them
into make.

Oh boy... FreeBSD takes allot of getting used to. I ran "make
fetch-recursive" in the "/usr/ports/security/gaim-encryption" dir
yesterday. What I forgot to do was "make install clean". I've done this
twice now with other "ports". I'm learning. Heh..
When I checked "/var/db/pkg" I didn't see "gaim-encryption" as one of
the packages listed. So I knew right away that I flubbed up and forgot
to do "make install clean" after doing "make fetch-recursive"
initially.

Gaim-Encryption is working now. Thanks for your help anyways, Joe.

Thanks for the help Joe. I'm pretty certain that Gaim didn't build with
NSS support but I don't see any errors when running "gaim -d". I don't
see anything related to gaim-encryption or NSS being loaded either.

So it appears that Gaim isn't being built with NSS support. So if I
don't have an "/etc/make.conf" then how do I force Gaim to build with
NSS support when it compiles? Again I see stuff in the gaim MAKE file
but I don't know what I need to do specifically. Any suggestions or
documentation that shows me how to accomplish this task.

Thanks,
Joshua Banks

Not having an /etc/make.conf is okay. If you don't have WITHOUT_NSS set
in /etc/make.conf or in your environment, then Gaim should be built with
NSS support. You might try running gaim -d from the command line, and
see if it throws an error trying to load the encryption plug-in.

Dohp... I don't have an /etc/make.conf file present no problem.

Thats really weird that I don't have this file in place. I can figure
out what needs to be done but what I find really weird is why don't
they mention the "/etc/make.conf" file before or during Chapter 8 of
the handbook (Configuring the FreeBSD Kernel). Instead they leave this
till chapter 19. Seems very important to me especially if I want my
kernel sources built to my machine/hardware specs.

So I've already compiled the Kernel sources, so I'm assuming its
probably best that after I configure an "/etc/make.conf" file that I
should recompile my kernel sources again?

How do I ensure that Gaim is built with NSS Support? I didn't really
understand where to look or what to do? The MAKE file looks like the
logical place but I don't know what to do? Is this described in the
Handbook? If so can you kindly hint too, where.. and I'll do what
needs to be done.

Yep, works just fine. I use it daily. Make sure you do not have
WITHOUT_NSS defined in your /etc/make.conf, and that Gaim was build with
NSS support.

Go to Tools->Preferences->Plugins, and check Gaim-Encryption. Then, a
Gaim-Encryption item will appear under the Plugins header.

Gaim-Encryption

2004-08-06 Thread Joshua Banks
I've looked on Google and the mailing archives and don't really find
anything were others are complaining about the same issue. So I'm
assuming because I'm new to FreeBSD that I'm overlooking something.

I made sure that my ports tree was synced with the most upto date
ports. I went into the "/usr/ports/net/gaim" and did "make
fetch-recursive" and then "make install clean".

Among other things this compiled the newst version of Gaim V 0.80. No
problems. This works great. But now I would like to use encyption so I
goto "/usr/ports/security/gaim-encyption" and do "make fetch-recursive"
and then "make install clean". This compiled fine. Gaim-Encryption
v2.28.

But when I open up Gaim to load the Encryption-Plugin it doesn't show
up listed at all. I tried rebooting and still the same. I tried
"deinstalling Gaim and the reinstalling. Still the same thing..

Does anyone have Gaim working with Gaim encryption? I've looked in the
"MAKE" files but I'm unsure of what to do if anything. Any help is much
appreciated.

Thanks,
Joshua Banks

The plugin wasn't written for modern versions of gaim. If you have any
success getting it to work, please let me know and I will happily add
support for it into the port.

I looked into it at one point, realized how much of a PITA it was going
to be, and never even tried to make it work. I'm such a go-getter!

This problem comes up from the pthread change to 5.x. There are a number
of fixes that have been discussed on -current. Do a mailman web search

Hmm, as I thought, there's something wrong with your threads.
Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with FreeBSD 5 (yet ;-), but the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list will certainly assist you to fix it.

Unless you find a different solution, I'd suggest that you ask you
question there again (together with all the information you gave me).

A good idea is also to build a debugging version of gaim and provide a
backtrace:

/etc/make.conf:
CFLAGS=-O -pipe -g
STRIP=

The reinstall gaim, and once it crashes, either gather a backtrace with
bugbuddy (it should be started automatically if it's installed), or with
gdb:

gdb gaim gaim.core (the enter 'bt' at the gdb prompt).

> I haven't had time to look into Michael's suggestions, maybe I'll give it
> a go tonight.

I generally dislike the idea of manually building things that are in the
ports collection, but don't feel discouraged to do same investigations
;-)
 - you lose the control about your installed software
 - if the problem is in the ports collection, others will have the same
problem, so it's better to fix it globally

Cheers,
 Simon

The output of something like

  pkg_info | grep gaim

is usually more helpful, since it also shows the version of the FreeBSD
port you are using.

Hmm, nothing suspicious, IMO.

Could you please see whether you are running the very latest version of
the port (gaim-0.75_8 at the present)?

Hey Adam,

I fought with this for about three hours the other night. Go to Gaim's
faq-ssl:

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq-ssl.php

I used the GnuTLS tools.

libgpg-error (needed by libgcrypt):
ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/alpha/libgpg-error/libgpg-error-0.5.tar.gz

libgcrypt (needed by GnuTLS):
ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/alpha/libgcrypt/libgcrypt-1.1.43.tar.gz

libtasn1 (needed by GnuTLS):
ftp://ftp.gnutls.org/pub/gnutls/libtasn1/libtasn1-0.2.6.tar.gz

GnuTLS (needed by gaim):
ftp://ftp.gnutls.org/pub/gnutls/attic/gnutls-0.9.91.tar.gz

As the page says, instal them in that order. After doing so, download
the latest source for Gaim .075. Unpack it and then do a "./configure
--with-gnutls-includes=PREFIX (Location of GNUTLS includes.)
 --with-gnutls-libs=PREFIX (Location of GNUTLS libraries.)"

eg.. Mine looked like this:

"./configure --disable-nls --disable-perl
--with-gnutls-includes=/usr/local/lib/ --with-gnutls-libs=/usr/local/lib/"

I only know English so, --disable-nls and for some reason I can't get
perl to compile with it so, --disable-perl.

Everything worked fine after that. Hope this helps you.

Doing a 'pkg_add -n' on the ymessenger package at the FreeBSD ftp site reveals
that the package/dependencies have been updated. Have you tried using the
FreeBSD package or port?

Have you looked at the GAIM homepage:

The first news item mentions a workaround for connecting to Yahoo!.

Thanks, I did that now. I deleted my ~/.ymessenger directory and started
ymessenger. I get to set my user information and then it just crashes. Is
there something I'm missing?

from 'man pkg_add'

-f Force installation to proceed even if prerequisite packages
are not installed or the requirements script fails. Although pkg_add
will still try to find and auto-install missing prerequisite packages, a
failure to find one will not be fatal.

this may help. I don't have a lot of experience forcing packages, but
it might get you somewhere

Talk Filters and Gaim...

2003-12-09 Thread epilogue
hello all,

just wondering if any of you has had luck getting the talkfilters port
integrated with gaim? i tried applying the patches included with the
talkfilters port, but no dice. i suspect that this failure has much to do
with the difference between the version of gaim for which the patches were
written and the version of gaim i am running (0.74).

excerpt of talkfilters gaim-patch README:

This patch is provided for interested hackers only, not for end
users. Familiarity with UNIX and C development is assumed. Please DO
NOT email me if you need help appying this patch.

This directory structure contains a skeleton of the gaim-0.59.8 source
tree.

well, i'm not familiar with UNIX or C development (and i'm definitely not
e-mailing the author of talkfilters... heheh), so i turn to you, the other
users. i would really appreciate it if one of you could point me in the
right direction. thanks.

cheers,
epi

No, looking closer I see that with perl versions less than 5.008, it
just configures without perl. Perl isn't necessary to gaim at all.
You may not be able to run homemade perl scripts that way, but it
doesn't sound like you were doing that anyway.

Or your ports tree is somewhat old; it's been gone for three months or
so, and broken for at least three before that.

The answer, short form: Sacrifice Linuxism-infested w33n0rs to the
Great God Knuth.
Ha! Only kidding. [*] The answer, longer form:

Gaim requires perl 5.8 or higher just to be installed - its 'l33t++
custom configurator thingy requires it. The 5.005 that comes
with FreeBSD 4.8 is not sufficient.
So:
- cvsupit your ports
- install Perl 5.8.1 (we installed from the package, it works fine)
- make install Gaim
- make deinstall/make install libatk and libgtk along the way (we did
actually have the right versions installed - it just didn't *think*
we did)
- force install on Gaim (it won't actually let you remove the old version)
- put in a symlink from libatk-1.0.so.400 to libatk-1.0.so.200, because
the install process trashes the latter.

The answer, as just ranted in my LiveJournal:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/reddragdiva/106318.html
- d.

[*] I would need to catch them first.

I recommend you updating your source using cvsup, cd /usr/ports/net/gaim
&& make install clean. If it complains about an older version already
installed just install portupgrade /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade. when
portupgrade is installed run the following command as root

#portupgrade gaim

That will get the latest version of gaim (which is 0.73)

I am using FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE-p13 and Gaim 0.73 works just fine. Don't
know anything about the msn protocol cause I don't use msn but with what
I use it for (aim + yahoo) it works just fine.

Re: Can't install gaim on FreeBSD 4.x

2003-11-26 Thread Patrick Burnett
This is more a question of curiosity rather than a solution since I'm an
admitted newbie, so treat this as an inquiry to the masses. Would
portupgrade help in this case to upgrade and/or install a newer version
of the Gaim source/port for you to use?

For example, I just ran cvsup on a clean new system (4.9R on a Dell
laptop) to download the latest ports and source and the version of Gaim
in my ports is now 0.73, the latest release.

I know I'm scattershooting, but maybe I'm helping shed some light.

In /usr/share/examples/cvsup there are sample supfiles that I just edit
and use. The ports-supfile will download all current ports from the CVS
tree to /usr/ports, and the standard-supfile will download all current
source for your version (mine happens to be 4.9R) to /usr/src. Maybe
try that and installing from the latest ports for your OS version and
see what happens.

pkg_add -vr cvsup-without-gui (to install the text only version of
CVSup)
** -v is not required...I just like the verbose output to see what is
actually happening.**
logout/log back in...as root
go to /usr/share/examples/cvsup
edit the appropriate supfile as you see fit...remembering to edit the
CHANGE_THIS.FreeBSD.org line to reflect which CVSup mirror you want to
hitexample cvsup5.FreeBSD.org.
save changes and exit file(s)
cvsup -g -L 2 ports-supfile
cvsup -g -L 2 standard-supfile

Just a few of my thoughts. Good luck.
Pat

I'am using amsn 0.83 and it's working fine. The ports are still to 0.82
(Not working version)
You have to download amsn from sourceforge

They changed the protocol version. This has been in the news for

Gaim and webcams

I am trying to find something that will allow me to accept a webcam
invitation in a messeger app. I have tried gaim and yahoo messenger but
with no success. I dont want to have to use msn messenger just to be
able to accept this invite. Is there anything out there that will
communicate with msn messenger and allow a person to view these
requests? Or is there some other messenger app that is cross platform
that would allow me to do this?

I did this and everything works now! (YIM is still buggy, it dies with a read

The only other GTK2 app that I have installed is Xchat 2.0.5, and I've had
no problems with it so far. And I have no ~/.gtkrc-2.0, so it's flying on
system defaults.

What's interesting is that if I go into GAIM preferences->fonts->use
custom face, clicking on the "Font" button brings up the standard "Select
Font" window that I'd expect the Conversation/"Font Face" button to bring
up. Since I've not yet gotten the latter to work, though, I'm not sure
what it's supposed to bring up.

fontconfig version is fontconfig-2.2.90_3 from the ports collection;
Xft-2.1.2 from the ports collection as well.

Many of the X-windows related ports on this new system (gtk2, etc.) were
built before I manually uninstalled the XFree86 4.3.0 binary release of
freetype2 [2.1.0], fontconfig [2.2.90], and Xft [2.1.0] and installed the
ports versions:

freetype2-2.1.5_1
fontconfig-2.2.90_3
Xft-2.1.2

...ugh, version number hell. :)

I was using the version that came with the XFree86 4.3.0 binary distro,
which was 2.1.0. I tried removing that manually and installing Xft-2.1.2
from the ports collection, but I am still seeing the same error with GAIM.

Thanks,

Nope, I had gaim generate a fresh .gaim directory for me.

> What version of freetype2 do you have installed?

I initially used the version that came with the XFree86.org 4.3.0 binary
distribution, which appears to be 2.1.0. Today, I manually removed both
this version of freetype2 and fontconfig, and installed the latest
versions out of the the ports collection (freetype2-2.1.5_1 and
fontconfig-2.2.90_3, respectively).

> Have you run fc-cache -f -v as root?

Running fc-cache as root gives me:

# fc-cache -f -v
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts": caching, 0 fonts, 13 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi": caching, 397 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc": caching, 55 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/util": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings": caching, 0 fonts, 1 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/large": caching, 0 fonts, 0
dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi": caching, 397 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1": caching, 29 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF": caching, 13 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/PEX": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2": caching, 0 fonts, 2 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/100dpi": caching, 0 fonts, 0
dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/75dpi": caching, 0 fonts, 0
dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF": caching, 13 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1": caching, 29 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/home/steve/.fonts": skipping, no such directory
fc-cache: succeeded

Unfortunately, running a freshly built version of GAIM produces the same
results as before. Perhaps part of my install was statically linked to an
older version of the fontconfig libraries? Most of the ports were built
using the XFree86.org "bundled" freetype2 and fontconfig; I'm not sure how
that might play into this, as I'm not quite clear as to what system
components use these libraries.

I'd be glad to give you any additional information that you might be
interested in; I'm stumped at this point.

Thanks again,
Steve

Works fine for me on two different systems. No one else has reported
this yet. You said this is a new system, but did you migrate an old
.gaimrc? What version of freetype2 do you have installed? Have you run
fc-cache -f -v as root?

Font selection problem with GAIM 0.70 port

2003-10-04 Thread Steve Bernacki
When in a "conversation" window, clicking on the "Font Face" button
causes gaim-0.70 to spew the following to stderr:

** (gaim:199): WARNING **: Couldn't load font "fixed Medium Semi-Condensed
0" falling back to "Sans Medium Semi-Condensed 0"

** (gaim:199): WARNING **: Couldn't load font "Sans Medium Semi-Condensed
0" falling back to "Sans 0"

** (gaim:199): WARNING **: All font failbacks failed

...at which point the program exits. Googling this error message points
to an improperly configured freetype2 library or fontconfig configuration.
However, as far as I can tell, there are no configuration problems on my
system: fc-list spits out 30 a number of fonts, although none that start
with "Sans" proper.

This is a brand new system, so unfortunately I'm unsure if previous
versions of GAIM have worked properly.

System: FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE + latest security patches
XFree86 4.3.0 with all stock fonts
Related ports: freetype-1.3.1_2 gettext-0.12.1 gtk-2.2.4_1 glib-2.2.3
pango-1.2.5
(from ports-current as of 10/1/2003)

If anyone has any ideas, or can at least confirm that they are
experiencing the same problem with this version of GAIM, I'd really
appreciate it.

Thanks,
Steve

As soon as my Gaim client quit connecting to the Yahoo! Messenger
service I read up on the issue, promptly dumped the Yahoo! account
and went straight to jabber.org. Problem is, it's not much use if none
of the people I know are using jabber. Time will tell if I'm able to
convice friends, co-workers and family to quit using the proprietary
services and move to jabber.

Sucks. Should be a work around sometime in the near future though.

gaim 0.67 is working fine for me. Is there anything useful in the Debug
