flash alternative

I have heard that there is an alternative to flash that is apparently
more efficient and less cumbersome in terms of data transfers; and that
it is "lighter" whatever that may mean.
Anyone know anything about this?

if yer refering to "gnash" then yes it is lighter, but I have had issues where 
it does not work for every flash based website.

I think you are referring to Silverlight, right?

Silverlight on FreeBSD is extremely lightweight.
