URL: http://gna.org/bugs/?16177 Summary: Patch for a new nation: Acadian Project: Freeciv Submitted by: None Submitted on: Friday 06/18/2010 at 04:30 CEST Category: rulesets Severity: 3 - Normal Priority: 5 - Normal Status: None Assigned to: None Originator Email: jf.arsen...@gmail.com Open/Closed: Open Release: Discussion Lock: Any Operating System: GNU/Linux Planned Release: ___ Details: I apologize if I'm not doing this right, this is my first patch submission and I'm following the Wiki. I have made a patch to add the Acadian nation to Freeciv. Acadians are an ethnic group mostly concentrated in the Canadian Maritimes and in Louisiana (where they are called Cajuns) that organized their society often on the margins of the governments of the day, be it French, British, Canadian or American. They are not and have never had an independent state however. The most Acadia has been on an official level is a colony. As such, I put them down in the American group. Attached to this ticket is the SVN diff for the patch, which adds acadian as a conflicting nation for the French and the Canadians, and also adds Acadians as a civil war nation for Canadians. It also updates files for the flags and the nation list. If there's any questions regarding this, I can be reached at jf.arsen...@gmail, and I'll attempt to follow this ticket. Thank you! Follow-up Comment #1, bug #16177 (project freeciv): Forgot to mention that I also attached the acadian.ruleset which specifies all the info for that nation, and acadia.svg for the flags. ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/bugs/?16177 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

Follow-up Comment #2, bug #16177 (project freeciv): Thanks for the contribution - you're in the right place (although nation files are typically posted as patches rather than bugs.) Just for the record, there is another contributed Acadian nation over at http://download.gna.org/freeciv/contrib/nations/acadian.tar.gz -- it was contributed anonymously many years ago but never included in mainline Freeciv since it was too 'thin' on contents. Your version seems to be in a much better shape in this regard. Plus there's the matter of the Acadian flag - it is really very similar to the flag of France. This becomes a potential problem in-game. Imagine for example if the Acadians civil war and a French player is created - distinguishing between units owned by the Acadians from those owned by the French is going to be a headache. How do you feel about using a different flag design for the Freeciv nation? ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/bugs/?16177 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

Follow-up Comment #3, bug #16177 (project freeciv): Hmm, yes, well the Acadian flag was obviously based on the French flag but I can see how this becomes problematic. I was under the impression that the conflicts_with clause was to help towards preventing something like that, although I imagine it doesn't help if a player takes France and another Acadia. Acadia doesn't really use any other distinguishing symbols (except maybe lobster, but that wouldn't work as a flag!), although I'm thinking it might be possible to fudge things a little and make the star bigger to fill up almost all of the blue. You would never seen any flag like that in Acadia, but it might solve our problem. ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/bugs/?16177 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

Follow-up Comment #4, bug #16177 (project freeciv): Yeah conflicts_with will make sure the two aren't seeded in the same game by the server code, but as you say this won't stop two human players to manually pick both. Experimenting with the size of the star sounds like a good start. We'll know how it turns out when the svg is rendered into the smallish png flag and shield images. ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/bugs/?16177 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

Follow-up Comment #5, bug #16177 (project freeciv): It looks ridiculous on the SVG, but in-game, it actually doesn't look so bad. Screenshot and modified SVG attached. Although, there's a few things about this solution: 1) unless I missed it, it would be the first time a nation's flag would be modified for the game, 2) Australia and New Zealand have very similar flags, yet both are in the game (granted they're both countries though), 3) France has an alternate flag, in its old French flag. Is there any way for the games when France and Acadia are both on the map, for France to use the old flag? I guess that might still confuse some players though. :/ I need to travel back in time and tell them to pick a more distinctive flag to avoid Freeciv confusion!
