Re: [Freedos-user] networking/wifi

2021-03-18 Thread Šimon Dobeš

Hello,
Well I tried to use USB with FreeDOS. You can use USB with FreeDOS but
you need to do some things.
1st: You need to unzip FreeDOS USB installer to USB that you wnat to
use.
2nd: Create special folder for files you want to transfer. E.G.: Folder
named TRANSFER

3rd: Boot from USB.
4th: Cancel installation.
5th: Your USB is ready to go.
Note: USB is C: and you main hard drive is D: or sometimes even E:

I hope this will work,
Šimon Dobeš

Hi all,

Am just wondering if this is the current status, or some old comment:

"Wireless devices connected via USB can not yet be used with FreeDOS."

I am a bit surprised by this. any news that we all are not aware of?

Same as I've said before in the email lists, and elsewhere:

I want to get "1.3" finally wrapped up, and I'd like to have a "2.0"
someday. The NightDOS folks are working on their updated kernel - if
they can get it working and still runs all 16-bit DOS applications,
then we could include that as an alternative kernel for people who (a)
have a more modern system, and (b) opt-in to use it.**

And there are other "like to have" things that would be great to have
in a FreeDOS "2.0" like an alternative DOS command.com shell. I
described that here long ago, and on the blog - would love to have an
expanded command.com that uses a BASIC-like syntax but still maintains
compatibility with DOS BAT files. At the time, you pointed out that
Windows command.com did something similar to what I proposed - but I
don't use Windows so I wasn't aware of that.

And "2.0" still needs to be "DOS" so needs to support all 16-bit DOS
applications. And I would want FreeDOS to remain a command-line
operating system.

So, no surprises to anyone on this list.

Jim

** But, NightDOS is a long way from being able to do that. The goals
of NightDOS are pretty lofty, so they have a lot of work here. I think
it will be a while before we see that.

My presentation is pre-recorded, and I've uploaded a copy to the

Dear All,

I have downloaded the FD13 Live CD (preview) and tried to boot it on my
laptop having a SATA DVD.

I set the boot mode to Legacy from the BIOS and FreeDOS boots. However,
it does not find and mount the CD as D: It fails with an error message
displaying "no drives found".

When I boot the same CD on my old IDE DVD, everything works like a
charm.

I tried to edit FDAUTO.BAT and use GCDROM.SYS and UIDE.SYS instead with
no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Freedos-user] Windows 95

2021-01-28 Thread Šimon Dobeš
Well it's like this.

For me it's too hard to orientate in command line interface such as dos.
For better orientation I prefer some sort of grafical user interface (GUI)
I do not know anything other except for Windows. It is the best environment
for me since when I was a child we had an 486 dx2 with windows 98 se on it.
In this point my gaming career started. I played mostly dos games and some
windows games such as a pinball and so on. After 22 years I found several
abandonware websites that offer all that great games from my childhood. But
there is one problem. I just don't know how to use dos. So I want to use
GUI when I am running any of that games. Please note that I was 7 year old
boy when dad brought the computer home.

I also installed Linux Mint that comes with wine. I copied games from CD to
run it and nothing happened. Even after trying to configure wine.

I know that I still can use Virtual Machine such as Oracle's VM VirtualBox
but my pc is not running well this emulations.

So in the final,
I want to install stable version of Windows which is stable on dos. I think
that win95 is great compromise. But maybe I am wrong.

Thank a lot.

Hi Šimon,

 OK
I will try to explain more properly. I plugged in my Laptop. Pushed down
the power button and nothing happened. I cleaned up and I did not found
anything leaked or broken. I think there is a problem with power supply

In my experience with laptops of people I know, the most
common reasons for this are:

- the battery was dead (main battery or CMOS / clock battery)

- the charger / power supply socket no longer made good contact,
so while you believe everything is connected, no power arrives

- the charger / power supply no longer worked at all (quite often!)

- or, unlikely, you had to reset the CMOS settings or reinstall the OS

or some circuits. I will keep finding. I have also a battery pack for
that Laptop too but I am not using since those batteries are way old to
handle all operations and may explode.
 Simon

As Mateusz explains, it may still be better to connect the battery,
even if the battery is so weak that your computer switches off a
few seconds after you disconnect the power supply from the AC socket.

Luckily, it is easy to get replacement power supply "bricks". Some
are sold with all sorts of connectors and with adjustable voltage.

You have to make sure to use the right voltage, polarity and plug!
Wrong power replacement choices can permanently damage your laptop.

Regards, Eric

Well, as others already mentioned, there is no reason why FreeDOS would NOT run
on such a PC. More RAM that you would probably need, but not a problem either.

What however is a problem here is that "it is not working" is not a proper
problem description. You need to be far more precise/descriptive of what exactly you are
trying to do and what the results are. We can not look over your shoulder, and there
simply is not enough information to even make an educated guess...
