Well, other companies with vested interests and governments should
fight this ruling, as ISTR that Digital Research used the FAT system in
their later versions of DR-DOS. If this usage was allowed by Microsoft
without protest, it should invalidate their claim IMHO, but I am not a
 patent attorney.
Also, my experience with the PTO in the 1980's was quite mixed in
their failure to recognise 'prior knowledge in the art'. In my case, it
 involved pyrotechnic formulations.

Hi all,
Disclaimer: I am not an attorney of any sort; I'm a computer tech that
has had some sort of computer for about 27 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong but but the 8 flexible disk drive (FDD) was
invented at IBM by Alan Shugart in 1967; in 1976, the 5 1/4 FDD was
developed by the same Alan Shugart for Wang Laboratories because they
wanted a smaller floppy drive to use with their desktop computers. If
I'm reading my history correctly I understand that by the mid-70's FDDs
used some file system very similar to the FAT system. Also, it is my
understanding that CP/M used a type of FAT file system by 1975 or 1976.
It seems this was part of the prior art argument for this case.

As far as whether M$ thought up the FAT file system in 1976 - well
that is plainly a lie. In fact M$ BOUGHT MS-DOS (called QDOS) in 1980
(and never did pay the full amount owed to Seattle Computer Products)
then re-released that as PC-DOS 1.0 with the launch of the first IBM PC
(see the MS-DOS history below). So this whole case is based on total BS.
This is just further proof that with enough money one can buy anyone in
the USA government.

And Tom, about your questions:

AFAIK JFS was fully developed by IBM for use in both AIX (IBM's UNIX)
and Warp Server for e-Business (WSeB) and then adapted for use in Warp
4.5 and Linux. It is NOT based on FAT So that is safe from M$ (although
that is part of the basis of the SCO-vs-IBM case).

HPFS was jointly developed by IBM (about 20%) and M$ (about 80%). NTFS
is HPFS with a few minor changes, hence NTFS reporting HPFS partitions
as corrupted NTFS. There are many cross-licensing fees between IBM
M$ in OS/2 and I don't know the details of the HPFS fees. As far as an
open-source HPFS that is a question for a patent attorney and I am not one.

It is my opinion that this case is NOT settled yet and that it will go
on for a long time. The patent was filed retroactively which is stupid
from the start. Plus there is just overwhelming evidence of prior art
and that any FAT patent is obvious due to the prior art. If, because of
making the proper payments to the proper people it is never overturned
then I say to just flick-off M$ and move to JFS on ALL storage even if
we have to develop a 12-bit JFS.

We appreciate your interest in the $100 Laptop initiative. Please know we
receive more than 100 emails per day regarding the project. We are a small
team working on making this project a reality and unfortunately we are
unable to answer each e-mail personally.

Following please find informative details on the project.

Inquiries about buying the laptop regretfully cannot be answered. Please
note that the $100 laptops--not yet in production--will not be available
for sale. The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through
large government initiatives.

All public information will be listed on our website.

Thank you.

Executive Summary

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the One Laptop per
Child (OLPC) non-profit association have launched a global program to equip
hundreds of millions of students and their teachers with ultra-low-cost,
individual, connected laptop computers to dramatically enhance the
children’s primary and secondary education. These will be fully powered,
general-purpose laptops, sized for children and adolescents, running Open
Source software, with wireless mesh-network connectivity.

The machines will be built and sold at cost to ministries of education,
with a floating price targeted at $100 and thereafter floating down.
According to the present schedule, integrated prototypes of the Gen-1
laptop will be available Q3, ’06. Manufacturing begins Q4. The first 10 to
15 million Gen-1 pilot-phase machines will ship by or before Q1, ’07, to
five or six large, geographically and culturally diverse countries. Each of
these nations will identify three or more regions within their country
emphasizing, when possible, rural and remote areas where all students in
all primary and secondary grades receive a personal and connected machine:
One Laptop per Child.

An essential feature of the pilot program will be training, logistics and
an administrative initiative based in the host country. Here, in
partnership with local educational organizations or other groups to be
determined, MIT will help create the means to implement a carefully
designed, exponential process to impart the necessary technological and
pedagogical skills to classroom teachers over a period of approximately six
months.

OLPC technology incorporates design and engineering advances developed at
MIT's Media Lab, plus innovations in manufacturing and distribution to
bring costs in line with the host countries’ budget structures. The
laptops will be made available only to schoolchildren and their teachers,
through government programs and not through retail or commercial channels.
In parallel, OLPC is in discussion with a handful of well known large and
global companies to release a commercial version circa $200 at the same
time.

Hardware

Its hardware specifications, as of October 2005, are:
500 MHz CPU (Processor) by AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) Inc.
1 GB of flash memory (no hard drive)
SVGA 8 diagonal display (dual LCD Color/Black White mode for power
conservation and outdoor reading); estimated cost $35
  128 MB of DRAM
AC Cord that doubles as carrying strap as the power source and a
hand-crank (one minute of cranking gives enough power for 10 minutes
  of operating).

The cost of materials and assembly for each laptop is estimated to be
approximately $100.

Software

All of the software on the $100 Laptop will be open-source. The projected
software as of November 2005 is:
Red Hat Linux variant as operating system
  A web browser
  A word processor
  An email program
  A programming system

Participating countries

Brazil, Thailand, Egypt, United States (Massachusetts), Cambodia, Costa
Rica and Tunisia have already committed in various ways. The laptops will
be sold only to governments, to be distributed through the ministries of
education willing to adopt the policy of “one laptop per child”.

We will begin with five pilot countries and one U.S. state. Once this
occurs, we hope to extend our reach to other nations.

Prototype

Nicholas Negroponte is scheduled to demo a working prototype of the device
on November 16, 2005 at a United Nations technology conference in Tunisia.
However, the device shown will be a rough estimation, as work is still
being done on the development of the device for both performance and
pricing issues. Negroponte estimated that the screen alone required three
more months of development.

Hi Tom

Under Win2k, XP, the whole idea is that it's up to the user how they
want to run their DOS app. They can choose the dimensions of the box,
the number of characters, the fonts, and the number of lines.

As I see it, this is exactly as it should be.

It could be argued that if an installer changes these settings it's
either a security breach or an unfriendly application.

However, a possible solution would be to distribute a shortcut with
your app that starts the app in the exact way you desire. This avoids
trashing their chosen user-wide setting.

Anyway, you should never try to change HKCU from an installer.

OS=Win2K or WinXP
I'm aware of the Alt+Enter to toggle between full and window mode. I
can also get fullscreen by choosing the option in the properties
section of the icon, then right-clicking on the title bar of the DOS
screen, going to Properties | Layout, and making the dimensions of
the screen buffer size and window size 80x25. That works beautifully.
What I am trying to do is create an install script that does this
automatically. It looks like there is a registry entry created when
you go through the procedure to set the screen to true full-screen.
The registry entry is located here in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%SystemRoot%_system32_ntvdm.exe

Basically 2 settings seem to affect the full-screen option:

ScreenBufferSize = 1638480(decimal)

WindowSize = Deleted

When I modify these entries with the install script, I don't get true
fullscreen. The DOS section of the screen is full, but the data, or
application only uses the top half of that screen. Is there another
registry entry that needs to be modified to make my DOS application
run true fullscreen?

[Freedos-user] [Fwd: [freedos] Installing a DOS App and Having it Run Fullscreen?]

2005-11-01 Thread Tom Lee Mullins

---BeginMessage---
OS=Win2K or WinXP
It looks like there is a registry entry created when you go through
the procedure to set the screen to true full-screen. The registry
entry is located here in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%SystemRoot%_system32_ntvdm.exe

Basically 2 settings seem to affect the full-screen option:

ScreenBufferSize = 1638480(decimal)

WindowSize = Deleted

When I modify these entries with the install script, I don't get true
fullscreen. The DOS section of the screen is full, but the data, or
application only uses the top half of that screen. Is there another
registry entry that needs to be modified to make my DOS application
run true fullscreen?

Thanks,
Pete S - Tucson, AZ

No, you cannot use Windows drivers with FreeDOS.

Why don't you make things a lot easier and simply buy an ISA
SoundBlaster card? Depending on the model, you do not need any drivers,
Plug Play initialisation utilities, or any other software because DOS
applications supporting the SB provide their own routines to drive the
card.

I have two CT2960 (ViBRA 16C, according to the IC labelled U3 on the
board) cards which work with all DOS applications written to drive a
plain SB or SB16.

An easy way to do this would be to install the two different
DOS versions in two different primary partitions and use a
boot loader like gag (gag.sourceforge.net) to select
which to boot. GRUB would work as well, but I find
configuring GRUB correctly a daunting task... :-)

Perhaps easier than that (if PC-DOS doesn't support FAT32) would be to
install PC-DOS on a FAT16 partition, and then install FreeDOS on a
FAT32 partition; then use a simple bootloader to choose which one to
boot. That way FreeDOS will be able to see both partitions and
FreeDOS will always be the first primary partition to FreeDOS, and
PC-DOS will also act like it is the first DOS primay partition, as it
can only see its own drive and other FAT16 drives.

Also, is he using the source straight from cvs or from the archive at
fdos.org? (Depending on the branch) the source as is in cvs will not
compile, at minimal you need the suppl library and a dummy file (or
minimal implementation) as it appears to have not been committed -- I
forget which, but check out the patch file included in the source
archive of FreeCom on fdos.org/kernel/ [it also contains some

I recently bought a tablet PC. It has no disk drives of any kind and no
OS. I found that if I plug a Sandisk FlashCard into the pcmcia slot, it will
recognize the card. I think if I can somehow install freedos on the card it
will boot from it. How can I put the card in another PC, install freedos, make
the flash card bootable, and then put the card in the tablet PC? I have a 4MB
and a 20MB flash card.

There are pcmcia/pccards that accept a flash card. With a notebook
computer, one could
'format' (IIRC) the flash card like a drive so it could be booted from.
One could copy the necessary files to it. Not having done it before, I
am not sure if it would work but it is a start. There are USB adapters
that can read flash cards. This could be used with a desktop computer
with USB supported.

[Freedos-user] Config.sys and Autoexec.bat Samples?

2004-07-31 Thread Tom Lee Mullins
I had installed FreeDOS on my IBM Thinkpad 755CD. I had it on diskettes
(now misplaced or written over). It had a sample config.sys and
autoexec.bat that I adapted for my computer. I had reformatted the hard
drive and installed FreeDOS again with support for the cdrom drive. I
can not find the sample .sys files. Can some one tell me where I can
download it from? It would be very helpful.
