[Freedos-user] What I do with the .img file?

2019-11-23 Thread Jose Isaias Cabrera

Greetings!

Sorry about the very newbie question, but I am trying to create a bootable USB
drive with FreeDOS, and the .img file is defaulted to IrfanView, an image view.
How do I make a bootable USB with that .img file? Thanks for the help.

Use a program called 'Rufus', make sure the file you have is an image file (Ex:
ISO, IMG, etc.)

Rufus is a program that formats the sectors on the USB drive to make it
bootable.

Hope this helps.

the EASIEST way in my experience, to create a bootable USB drive with a .img
file, is to use the program called etcher. this is not a plug for them, but i
haven had a bad experience using it yet

Yes, it did. And thank you for your help. However, the USB, after the image
creation, will not allow any more data on it, even though there is plenty of
space on it. It only has 39 Megs of data in it, but the USB drive is 256Megs.
There should be enough to copy 1Meg of data.

Slightly OT: I still wonder, why anyone would need the 139 (!) MB Etcher
(), when Rufus () does
the same (?) in 1.1 MB.

I agree. I downloaded Rufus, and loved the lightness of it. And then, I said,
"Let me try etcher," and it took 1.49 minutes to download. I thought it was a
site far away. Then I saw why. Thanks.

Must be that rufus has been created using "obsolete, antiquated solution",
while etcher - using "modern technology", like C# or some similar one

Indeed, indeed, ZB. You hit the nail right on the head. Hmmm, or should I
say, "missed the nail completely." I remember back in the days, when my A1000
use to load a full OS with two floppies, and it ran all type of software. I
bought a 120M hard drive, and I had all public domain software in that drive,
and I still had over 80M left. Darn, the good ole days. Wait, the bad ole
days...

You know, they usually say: "the gear is here, why not use it" - which
translates to: "now we can afford to waste CPU cycles and HDD/RAM space -
why not waste it then?"

I just have to say this... I complained once to my boss about how big and
bloated an executable was and how we could not email it to our customer to
fix a problem. He said, "size is not a problem anymore. And if it is, let
me know because there are a lots of other people out there that don't care
about file size." :-/ And, I'll be quiet now.

I use etcher because I myself am on Linux, and it handles zipped img files in
two clicks. no need to go to the terminal and work some dd magic or anything.
nothing against rufus, because I use it when I run Windows, its just that
Etcher handles a plethora of different file types, in the matter of a few
clicks, and does an automatic verification of the write also.
if the tech works, use it. Doesn't matter if its old or not, if its what you
want to use and it works, then use it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: a few extra clicks saved also, when it comes to
zipped or compressed img files (or whichever). Etcher handles that also, no
need to extract it yourself :)

Ugh, I keep thinking of things. Forgot to mention the 50% faster flash times,
the ability to write to multiple drives simultaneously, EXTREMELY user
friendly, and can flash compute modules directly and Raspberry Pi's directly,
without having to remove the SD card.

Couldn't you simply unzip and write the unzipped image using dd?

I believe dd is a standard part of any Unix or quasi-Unix, including Linux and
the BSDs.
