That was specificaly for freevo of course.
For the crash it was because xmame-gl could not find libGL.so. I works
with standard xmame (i had to remove -modenumber 6 it's not suported ).
In case you're still interested, here it is :

Game.play(): Starting thread, cmd=--prio=-20 /usr/games/xmame -nosound

Game_Thread.run(): Started, cmd=--prio=-20 /usr/games/xmame -nosound

Specificly for Freevo? No. For xmame in general check their site.

Can you send the traceback from when Freevo crashes?

Re: [Freevo-users] Re:Freevo Boot

2003-07-30 Thread Q
I'm afraid my n00bness is showing through. :(

Which directory is that in? I see a directory called /boot - and inside it
there's a file called freevo, but no file called freevo-boot.

I assume you need the correct version number of freevo-boot for each freevo
version, or will any version work?

It tracks the main freevo version, since the files come from there.
I don't think it's been changed in a while though.

Find your romlist (/var/cache/freevo/romlist-0.pickled, or under /tmp)
and remove it, then restart. Assuming the location to xmame in
freevo.conf is ok it should use it to build a complete romlist.

I don't have mame, I think that line says that you need to delete
the cached rom list and regenerate it. Someone else would have to tell you

If you have the tgz tarball, the freevo-boot rpm package is just
repackaging of the ~freevo/boot directory, by placing it into the correct
directories for RH distro:

/etc/freevo
/etc/freevo/boot_config
/etc/rc.d/init.d/freevo
/etc/rc.d/init.d/freevo_dep
/usr/local/freevo/boot/URC-7201B00

I don't use it, and haven't tested it, so I'm not sure if it works
off the bat.

I believe that it's depreciated (sp?) since 1.3.2.

[Freevo-users] Re: Audio CD not recognized

2003-07-30 Thread Alec - Freevo
I tried to force the CD drive already without much success.
in local_config.py
ROM_DRIVES = [ ('/mnt/dvd', '/dev/hdd', 'DVD-paf') ]
The behavior is the same.
By the way, if you're interested i could give you an account on the machine

It used to be that we needed additional functionality in mplayer which
wasn't in their code base (OSD?). Guess it's no longer an issue now.
But we'd still need minimum version dependencies (the most recent mplayer
changed the way inputs are specified to use URL type formats).

Also, will 'freevo setup' still configure mplayer path (and now, xine
path)? I guess the setup process will have to be much more flexible and
intelligent.

[Freevo-users] rominfo...

2003-07-30 Thread Alec - Freevo
Hello

in freevo_config.py

 Note: You must have the "rominfo" app from rominfosrc compiled and
# placed in the main freevo dir first. This is not done by the regular
# Makefile, you must do it by hand. Read the rominfosrc/rominfo.txt
# for further instructions on more steps that are required to use MAME!

Where is this rominfo stuff? I cannot find it anywhere.

[Freevo-users] Re:Freevo Boot

2003-07-30 Thread Q
Hi I have found a file called freevo-boot.rpm, which allowes freevo to start
immediately after X has started. This gives me a lot more flexability in the
OS I choose to use. (I'm considering Gentoo, though Damn Small Linux and
Movix seem like better candidates right now - Freevix is simply too limited
in scope in terms of harware support). However none of the distributions I
have tried support the rpm format natively. Is there somewhere I can
download this file and compile it myself? Also what is the latest version of
this file and is it included with each new version of freevo?

All advice is welcome.

[Freevo-users] Re: Audio CD not recognized

2003-07-30 Thread Aubin Paul
Those numbers look correct; CD Audio is 100, CD Mixed is 105.

The problem is something to do with how Freevo is interacting with
your drive. Do you have a ROM_DRIVES entry setup? It might not have
detected them properly.

Yes, I remember this issue. I checked my setup at the time, and everything
was OK. tv_grab_uk was working fine back then. Don't think I've done
anything to my kernel since then (Should remember!) I'm trying to find

Hello Aubin,

The CDs are not mixed mode. With your script i get 100 when i put an audio

For the audio only CD i tried with "By the way" from the Red Hot Chili

Hmm... I had some problems awhile back because some of my audio cds
were mixed mode, so I had to add the ioctl for that.

Maybe you can try something?

Put the following into a script:
---
#!/usr/bin/env python
import os
from fcntl import ioctl
fd = os.open('/dev/cdrom', os.O_RDONLY | os.O_NONBLOCK)
s = ioctl(fd, 0x5327)
print s
os.close(fd)
--

Run the script (you may need to replace '/dev/cdrom' with your device
if it's different)

and look for the output. It should be a three digit code.

I like this idea... it's like we had before:

freevo
runtime
apps

we could ship freevo & runtime and a legal apps package. I can provide
apps package that are legal here in Brazil and other countries...

So I cant get it to work in any of my 3 computers, i'm going down to the

Maybe it's a defective card - bt8xx cards should show up as a few

Just the opposite. You need an unrestricted version to get all the
features. With an restricted version, you can only watch non protected
DVDs. Freevo doesn't care about the restrictions of the player, it
just says play it and doesn't know about protections (Freevo only
knows about a DVD in the drive, not if it's protected)

If the Lindows version has all features isn't sure, maybe it's only
the licenced _codecs_ (AC3, MPEG2) but still not DeCSS. I read the
xine-devel list and they try to find out. It doesn't concern me (or
Freevo) where you get your player and what features it has. If you
want to be 100% legal this is ok or if not (like you and most other
users), you can get a full version of the player and Freevo has
everything it has now.

2003-07-30 Thread Q
If you do not mind me asking, I only have one question. Will this allow
compatability with an unrestricted versions of Mplayer or Xine to be
maintained, or will this no longer be a priority of the Freevo team? What I
mean is is it possible that this change in direction might break some
compatability at some point in the future? If the answer is no, then that is
good enough for me. I guess then all this does is allow the user to choose
his or her own moral position - and their media player preferences. There is
also a legal version of Xine avaiable from Lindows.com, (fully licenced
codec) so maybe you could point concerned users to this too. It isn't cheap,
but if these kinds of things genuinely concern you, maybe it would be a
worthwhile alternative.

So what I am saying here is that I would be in favour of this. :)

[Freevo-users] Re: Legal issues

Hi,

But this may be not enough. SuSE and RedHat both ship mplayer/xine
without DeCSS and AC3 (yes, AC3 has a copyright and Freevo is not
paying). The Xine people only have sources and not have DeCSS included
(don't know about AC3). The Mplayer people have a server in Hungary
which may be ok for them.

Freevo is the only project providing everything needed in one
package. For the users this is great, because we need many Python libs
which aren't installed as default. But IIRC our mplayer also not all
features because some windows dlls are copy protected, too. So you
see, we already have a cripled mplayer.

I don't think it's too much to ask for the user to get the mplayer
somewhere else. There are many sites where you can get a fully working
mplayer or xine -- but not at USA, German, France, ... server. I don't
like the law, but I think we should respect it (the same we we want
others to resepect the GPL).

I would suggest the following: distribute Freevo with everything
needed except Mplayer and Xine. Give the users a pointer where to
download these two programs (like Xine does where to get binaries).

If someone doesn't like that, he's free to pack it's own Freevo
package on a server. We could add a link to this.

Comments please.

The new fxdimdb class implements this kind of functionallity (creating fxd's
with subtitle, or adding a subtitle), but it doesn't do it by itself, the
imdb plugin has to use it. It wouldn't be hard to implement. When creating an
fxd it could ask if you want to add subtitles, and present a list of all
valid subtitle files in the same directory for example.

Re: [Freevo-users] Re: Audio CD not recognized

2003-07-30 Thread Aubin Paul
Hmm... I had some problems awhile back because some of my audio cds
were mixed mode, so I had to add the ioctl for that.

Maybe you can try something?

Put the following into a script:
---
#!/usr/bin/env python
import os
from fcntl import ioctl
fd = os.open('/dev/cdrom', os.O_RDONLY | os.O_NONBLOCK)
s = ioctl(fd, 0x5327)
print s
os.close(fd)
--

Run the script (you may need to replace '/dev/cdrom' with your device
if it's different)

and look for the output. It should be a three digit code.

Strange. Freevo asks the rom drive about the media. It should report
back that it is an audio cd. Have you tried it with more than one
audio cd? Do other programs detect the disc?

OK. I had no pylirc doc when hacking that part of Freevo, so I did my

Actually not. If the action takes more time than the delay between two
repeats, the repeated IR event will be buffered, and the scrolling will
continue after the key is released. One solution would be to
calculate/measure X (from your example) so that the action never takes
more time than the interval between repeats. But this depends on the
processor speed, display adapter, python version, optimization and I
don't know what else.

I'll take a look at the pylirc CVS to make sure.

pylirc does return the repeatcount:

s = pylirc.nextcode(1)
for (code) in s:
print "Command: %s, Repeat: %d" % (code["config"], code["repeat"])

If you look at the pylirc CVS, there are some examples that might be
useful if you want to try that.

I also forgot to mention that I see this on DVDs too so it probably has

I have a Dell 2130 with interal CDRW and I too have this problem. I haven't
had a chance to troubleshoot it yet, so I don't have any logs to share.
Running  Freevo 1.3.2.

I've got the same problem here. Tried several audio-discs, Kscd works, but
Freevo doesn't. DVD-R drive is an internal DELL Inspiron 8100.

Re: [Freevo-users] Hauppage WinTV PCI

2003-07-30 Thread Johan Celén

Actually, I have tried this on my AMD Thunderbird
1.2 (MSI K7T266 Pro2). But that computer didn't find the card
either.
To rule out any via conflictions i tried it in an
old P2 333 box. I dont have any harddrive in that computer, so I couldent
really
try to get the card working, but atleast bios found
2 new multimedia devices. So I guess the card is working.
Or do you think I should try to get a new
card?

Strange. Freevo asks the rom drive about the media. It should report
back that it is an audio cd. Have you tried it with more than one
audio cd? Do other programs detect the disc?

You don't need to. You can put FXD files in a freevo directory
(MOVIE_DATA, I think), and Freevo will be able to automatically
``recognize'' which CD is related to which FXD file (using the CD's ID
and/or LABEL info). All my CDs have been burnt without FXD, and all my
FXD are stored on the hard disk drive.

Yes, that would be great.
I have many cds with divx films and burnning them all again with the fxd
files is not an option.

Actually, this is what the FXD file is for: it allows to go into a menu
and select which ``variant'' of the movie we want to play, and different
variants can have different subtitles.
Actually, it might be possible to generate an FXD file automatically
from the content of a CD, in order to have that menu created (and the
created FXD could be cached, also).

I think this would be the best cases to have a lst to choose from.
If we have a CD with a divx film and, for example, 5 subtitles files, all
from diferent languages, then it would be easy to choose one.
This way, we would be restricted to one subtitle language per film

What do you all think?

Mplayer can load automatically subtitle files which have the same name
than the movie file (only the extension is different). You could also
write a small script which automatically generates the FXD file from the
movie filename and the subtitle filename.

Might be possible, but not that practical if you have lots of subtitles
which you have to choose from, imho.

Re: [Freevo-users] Irman, Lirc and button repeat

The one which is in the runtime, version I-don't-know-what. It actually
returns ['ENTER'] when I press Enter for the first time, and [] for the
repeated 'ENTER' events. But it does not give the repeat number, so that
counting the repeats has to be done inside Freevo (if you want to drop
every second repeat, because the IR repeat rate is to fast for you).

The other problem is buffering inside pylirc: the repeats are buffered
until they are used, meaning that if you scroll the TV guide by
continuously pressing one button, since jumping to the next TV Guide
item takes more time than the repeat rate, you will ``store'' more
repeats than you need, and when you release the key, the TV Guide
continues scrolling for several seconds (and far beyond the point you
wanted to reach). What I have tried to implement is something which
empties this buffer before waiting for the next repeated event, but the
code is dirty, and sometimes it stops working for no obvious reason
(i.e. it stops scrolling, and I have to press the key again to
continue). But besides that it works more or less as expected (you
actually have to stop pressing the key one item before the one you want
to reach, because when you release the key, it still makes one jump to
the next item).

If you want a patch for that, I can give it to you, but I wouldn't
integrate it into Freevo unless it is working properly.
