I'm afraid my n00bness is showing through. :( Which directory is that in? I see a directory called /boot - and inside it there's a file called freevo, but no file called freevo-boot. Guess it's no longer an issue now. But we'd still need minimum version dependencies (the most recent mplayer changed the way inputs are specified to use URL type formats). Also, will 'freevo setup' still configure mplayer path (and now, xine path)? I guess the setup process will have to be much more flexible and intelligent. T.C. [Freevo-users] Re:Freevo Boot
Hi I have found a file called freevo-boot.rpm, which allowes freevo to start immediately after X has started. This gives me a lot more flexability in the OS I choose to use. (I'm considering Gentoo, though Damn Small Linux and Movix seem like better candidates right now - Freevix is simply too limited in scope in terms of harware support). However none of the distributions I have tried support the rpm format natively. Is there somewhere I can download this file and compile it myself? Also what is the latest version of this file and is it included with each new version of freevo? All advice is welcome. Those numbers look correct; CD Audio is 100, CD Mixed is 105. The problem is something to do with how Freevo is interacting with your drive. Do you have a ROM_DRIVES entry setup? You need an unrestricted version to get all the features. With an restricted version, you can only watch non protected DVDs. Freevo doesn't care about the restrictions of the player, it just says play it and doesn't know about protections (Freevo only knows about a DVD in the drive, not if it's protected) > There is also a legal version of Xine avaiable from Lindows.com, > (fully licenced codec) so maybe you could point concerned users to > this too. If the Lindows version has all features isn't sure, maybe it's only the licenced _codecs_ (AC3, MPEG2) but still not DeCSS. I read the xine-devel list and they try to find out. It doesn't concern me (or Freevo) where you get your player and what features it has. If you want to be 100% legal this is ok or if not (like you and most other users), you can get a full version of the player and Freevo has everything it has now. Re: [Freevo-users] Re: Legal issues
If you do not mind me asking, I only have one question. Will this allow compatability with an unrestricted versions of Mplayer or Xine to be maintained, or will this no longer be a priority of the Freevo team? What I mean is is it possible that this change in direction might break some compatability at some point in the future? If the answer is no, then that is good enough for me. I guess then all this does is allow the user to choose his or her own moral position - and their media player preferences. There is also a legal version of Xine avaiable from Lindows.com, (fully licenced codec) so maybe you could point concerned users to this too. It isn't cheap, but if these kinds of things genuinely concern you, maybe it would be a worthwhile alternative. But this may be not enough. SuSE and RedHat both ship mplayer/xine without DeCSS and AC3 (yes, AC3 has a copyright and Freevo is not paying). The Xine people only have sources and not have DeCSS included (don't know about AC3). The Mplayer people have a server in Hungary which may be ok for them. Freevo is the only project providing everything needed in one package. For the users this is great, because we need many Python libs which aren't installed as default. But IIRC our mplayer also not all features because some windows dlls are copy protected, too. So you see, we already have a cripled mplayer. The new fxdimdb class implements this kind of functionallity (creating fxd's with subtitle, or adding a subtitle), but it doesn't do it by itself, the imdb plugin has to use it. [Freevo-users] Re: Audio CD not recognized
I did try with several CDs, pressed and burnt, no luck. I even tried with another drive (one Sony DVD-ROM drive, one Lite-On CD drive) no luck. As i said that's only with audio CDs, other are detected without problems. If i try to play the cd with mplayer from the console, it works... Is there some debuging options i can set to check what's hapenning? Regards, Alec "Alec" wrote: > Hello there, > > CD audio are not detected by freevo. Actually not. If the action takes more time than the delay between two repeats, the repeated IR event will be buffered, and the scrolling will continue after the key is released. One solution would be to calculate/measure X (from your example) so that the action never takes more time than the interval between repeats. But this depends on the processor speed, display adapter, python version, optimization and I don't know what else. I'll take a look at the pylirc CVS to make sure. You don't need to. You can put FXD files in a freevo directory (MOVIE_DATA, I think), and Freevo will be able to automatically ``recognize'' which CD is related to which FXD file (using the CD's ID and/or LABEL info). It actually returns ['ENTER'] when I press Enter for the first time, and [] for the repeated 'ENTER' events. But it does not give the repeat number, so that counting the repeats has to be done inside Freevo (if you want to drop every second repeat, because the IR repeat rate is to fast for you). The other problem is buffering inside pylirc: the repeats are buffered until they are used, meaning that if you scroll the TV guide by continuously pressing one button, since jumping to the next TV Guide item takes more time than the repeat rate, you will ``store'' more repeats than you need, and when you release the key, the TV Guide continues scrolling for several seconds (and far beyond the point you wanted to reach). What I have tried to implement is something which empties this buffer before waiting for the next repeated event, but the code is dirty, and sometimes it stops working for no obvious reason (i.e. it stops scrolling, and I have to press the key again to continue). But besides that it works more or less as expected (you actually have to stop pressing the key one item before the one you want to reach, because when you release the key, it still makes one jump to the next item). If you want a patch for that, I can give it to you, but I wouldn't integrate it into Freevo unless it is working properly.
