[Freevo-users] Graphics card query.

2007-03-20 Thread Ashley Dawkins
Hi, just a quick question. Came across a Guillemot Cougar Video Edition AGP
card left over from a PC I've just upgraded.

Anyone using one of these for Freevo use? It has composite and s-vhs out,
and captures via s-vhs input. Its apparently an Nvidia tnt2 based card.

If anyone is using one, are there any hints and tips that would make
configuration neasier?

Cheers,

Ashley.

[Freevo-users] Freevo cache hangs.

2006-10-05 Thread Ashley Dawkins

Hi, got a problem that has me perplexed. When running freevo
cache, after processing all sub directories, the process hangs on the
root. The particulars are:

Directory is an NFS mount.

Path/folder structure is /movies/movies name/VIDEO_TS

All directories are processed apart from /movies which hangs
at 55% and I am unable to CTRL-C out and end up powering down the PC.

I have nothing in any logs, and have run an fsck locally on
the filesystem. df h shows

Filesystem
Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/hda1
2.8G 2.4G 441M 85% /

/dev/hda5
3.8G 2.1G 1.8G 55% /UT2003

/dev/hda6
1.9G 197M 1.7G 11% /Karaoke

/dev/hda7
112G 101G 12G 90% /Movies

/dev/hda8
33G 17G 16G 52% /Music

To check the freevo box, I telnetted to it while
running freevo cache, and saw no evidence of any filesystems running out of space,
which was my initial thought as to the cause of the problem.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Ashley.

[Freevo-users] Best standalone Freevo solution.

2006-08-18 Thread Ashley Dawkins

Hi, one thing about Freevo is that there are many ways to
achieve the same result. Based on the articles in the Wiki and a good price on
the card, I purchased a Matrox G400. I have a good Freevo setup for a
standalone Media Centre style box, but moving it to a completely monitor/keyboard/mouse
free set-up is giving me some grief. I have followed the articles in the Wiki
to get TV out, I use the mga drivers from the Mplayer source with good results,
but I find I am unable to tweak the configuration to my satisfaction. Some of
this is outside the scope of the Freevo project, but hopefully someone who has
a nice standalone solution can offer some most welcome words of wisdom.

I will step through my niggles

I use lilo to boot the system,
which initially outputs to the TV when it is connected to the composite
connection on the second head of the G400. As the kernel output starts,
this only appears on the monitor. I was looking at the nice bootspalsh
solution in the skins section, but if I only had the TV connected, my
current configuration would not show this.

I have the commands to enable
TV out in my rc.local as per the Wiki. When executed, I have the TV output
back with no output on the monitor.

When I start Freevo, I get
output to both the monitor and the TV. Okay, I could disconnect the
monitor and achieve what I am after, but I still dont get what is
going on and I would like to understand it.

I would love to be able to contribute to the Wiki, but the
bits are not quite gelling together for me to feel confident about doing this.
Any help or suggestions to overcome the above issues would be very much
appreciated, as would any other suggestions or comments regarding a standalone
project. Has anyone used a microdrive in a project, and if so, how does it
perform?

My box is based on Slackware 10.2 with Freevo 1.5.4.

Thanks in advance.

[Freevo-users] No audio with tv using mplayer.

2005-12-02 Thread Ashley Dawkins

Hi, having trouble with getting any audio when watching TV.
I have Freevo 1.5.4 installed on Slackware 10.2 with a custom compiled
2.6.13 kernel.

Freevo and mplayer are running perfectly in all areas apart
from watching TV. I can select my channel from the tv guide, but I have been
unable to get any audio, despite my tinkerings.

The mplayer log reads:

RE: [Freevo-users] Error on startup and shutdown.

2005-09-20 Thread Ashley Dawkins
Hi Evan, I am using your packages in this instance for all bar MPlayer, for
which I downloaded the source and compiled myself ( mainly as MPlayer was
giving me a message about runtime CPU detection not being optimal, and as I
have now acquired a G400 card I wanted the mga_vid driver/support). I have
liitle Python knowledge, I am a 4GL and Kornshell man myself, but I
initially thought I had removed an option in the kernel re-compile that
os.py was trying to query as there seemed to be some conditional stuff based
on OS detection in the code, but as I said, I'm no expert.

Just for info, I had the same issue with the mixer plugin, on both the 10.1
and 10.2 versions and had to use the ossmixer plugin to be able to adjust
the volume, although sound output was working, but only at the default
level. I had assumed it was a problem with my setup, even though all /dev
devices were fine and apps outside of Freevo did not seem to have an issue.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for the Slackware
packages, they eased my installation no end and removed my hair pulling
sessions where I did not have a dependency installed after hours of
compiling.

Regards,

Ashley.

Ashley-
Not tested it yet on a 10.2 box, but are you using my .tgzs or your
own? Off hand it looks like a Python issue. I had something similiar
happening with the default mixer plugin and had to switch to the
ossmixer plugin to fix it. also made sound work right :)

[Freevo-users] Newbie questions.

2005-08-20 Thread Ashley Dawkins

Sorry, some newbie questions that I have been unable to find
answers for.

I am configuring a prototype style setup and all is well
apart from a couple of niggly issues. I have xmltv sorted and I am able to
browse my listings from within Freevo, but when I select a channel to view I
only get statis displayed. My tv card/tuner is a Pinnacle (dmesg show it
detected as PCTV Rave/Studio). I am presuming the hardware is set up correctly
and that I have not edited the config files correctly. After trying to watch
the TV, dmesg shows tuner: TV freq (0.00) out of range (44-958). Could someone
point me in the right direction here please?

I have also been getting errors in various aspects of the
overall setup, where the DISPLAY variable is detected as not set. This was
first noticed following running freevo setup, which set display = x11, but when
starting freevo I got an error reporting DISPLAY not set, using fbdev. This
unset variable has caused other errors when compiling perl dependencies etc,
and again, have I missed something obvious?

As stated, this is a prototype, so I am currently using the
onboard graphics whilst setting this up, but will ultimately be using the
TV-out on the Pinnacle; how do I move the display output to the TV-out or will
it require a re-install?

Many thanks, snickwad.
