I still need to look at it, but just one doubt:

How does animation relate to media FPS?

That's an issue. Many movies have different FPS and the speed will be
different.

Since you did talk to me, I started to look -users ML. :)

I saw the ZooLook patch, I'll look at it and check. Maybe his patch fix
your problems too. ProcLCD is based on pure ASCII commands over TCP,
PyLCD is quite simple and shouldn't break any compability the way it's
done. But from Zoolook patch I saw they changed some parameters:

-priority 128 -> -priority background

and more.

I'll look at it and commit to CVS.

Maybe your main board has a bug? Or it's interference. If the first,
replace your board. If the later, try to wrap the wires with rubber or

[Freevo-users] i18n

2004-02-23 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Hello,

I commited some time ago the necessary changes to support i18n in web
interface and polished some strings, so translators have some work
again :)

If in the translation process you find out some weird strings or
strings that should be split in parts, strings that are almost the same
(maybe punctuation, spaces or other cosmetic changes), please let me
know.
I'm the pt_BR translator and in my works I always find some problems
like thatm and is boring to translate strings with the same meaning but
different cometic changes over and over again. Also, they can confuse
user.
So if you find those oddies, send a patch or just tell me the
line(s) and how do you think it should be.

We're not in string freeze yet, things may change before we came
with pre-releases, but if you have some time to help now, send your
work!

Just be sure, your src/www/htdocs/record.rpy should be revision 1.13

Freevo CVS should work, but you need to have some font that support
chinese chars. If you have one, copy it over
/path/to/freevo/share/fonts/VeraBD.ttf (something like that, I don't
remember the right filename right now)

Also, if you still experience problems, try exporting the environment
var FREEVO_LOCALE before running freevo. ie:
   export FREEVO_LOCALE=en_US.UTF-8; freevo

Hello,

Just commited the necessary changes to support non latin-1 filenames.

It Works-For-Me (TM) using LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8 and non-ascii (portuguese)
chars so it should work with others, please test.
I just tested the Video, Audio and Image modules, 'cause I don't have
games/commands modules, so if you have it and uses non-ascii chars,
please test.

Files changed in CVS:
src/config.py (new revision: 1.93)
src/item.py (new revision: 1.61)
src/osd.py (new revision: 1.132)
src/util/fileops.py (new revision: 1.14)

Dunno. I'm Brazilian so I use pt_BR translation (i'm the translator)
which are coded in:

"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1\n"
"Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n"

But I guess if it was in utf-8 it would also work.

> So, if menus and filenames are the same problem,

No, the problem with filenames is that it reads the filename as a byte
stream, so if it's in utf-8 and freevo uses latin-1, if you have some
non-ascii chars that uses 2 bytes it will show 2 weird latin-1 (because
it may be a low number, out of the range a-zA-Z0-9)

Maybe not. It could confuse users. Maybe we can enable the "Delete All
Tagged Files" only in the Top level dir, as you said.

Sure. I know Mike already answered, but to confirm, there's already
some of the functions in freevo.

I like the idea of having some RC key to tag files.
Files could display an icon overlaid (icon view) or {pre, post}fixed
(text view). I also proposed that to the "to come" favorites feature.
Just need to be careful and not bload the UI.

Also, as someone already pointed, I don't like the shopping cart. Maybe
we should rename it to something different, I'm for "Basket" or
something else, if better ideas come.

integrate PyUI. We want that but no one working atm. Rob Shortt did
some experiments, you can talk to him on IRC. PyUI is much faster than
our GUI Widgets, are more beauty, more functional and it have, AFAIK,

Freevo does not access the card directly. It does transparently using
SDL.
SDL library allows you to just draw to surfaces and it cares how to
output (x11, fb, tv-out, dxr3, ...), so you don't have to.

We can also send screenshots to them, state that we work on FreeBSD and
ask if they would support us :) It's a possibility!

I think the next code I'll do for Freevo is the plugin installation
thing, together with a plugin to update and download more plugins, just
like apt-get/emerge :) Vacation is near! ;)

Re: [Freevo-users] Installing Freevo on RedHat and SuSE

2003-10-11 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Good!

BTW, mandrake has urpmi, something like apt-get/emerge. The problem is
that users may set the PLF package source and some don't do that. Other
problem is that not every package we need are there... I migrated to
Gentoo and there are few months that I didn't checked out, maybe
they're there already.

also, another things that script may check are permissions and likes,
so SuSE users will not mail us saying that cannot play discs.

Re: [Freevo-users] visualizations for audio

2003-09-30 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
It still in early stages, I only have support for GOOM (google for it,
there is also a screenshot here: http://gsbarbieri.sytes.net/mpav.jpg)

It's not plugin-able yet, but that's easy. I just need to define one
API to load and comunicate with plugins... however I don't know how
WinAMP plugins work. Maybe in future I come with more native renders
(plugins) and even a XMMS plugin loader... but doesn't expect it soon
(Maybe in December/January).

Anyway, aside the fact that GOOM uses too much CPU, it is beautiful!

Re: [Freevo-users] visualizations for audio

2003-09-30 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Draw_Fractal is not my code, it's from goom, the library i use.

Did you checked the Makefile? Maybe you're using athlon or so, but the
makefile optimizes for pentium4. Please edit it by hand until I have
some time to come with a autoconf & automake solution :D (if you want
to send me those features, I would love!)

Also, It already uses SDL! So FB, DirectFB, X11, Dxr3 and everything
SDL support will be supported transparently!

also, if you're good with Threads, please help to tweak it. Sometimes
you may experience hangs even if your CPU isn't 100%. Maybe I used too
much threads! :D Seriously, I never did heavy optimized thread software
before, so any help is welcome!

yes, take a look in local_conf.py.example:

MPLAYER_SOFTWARE_SCALER = "-subfont-text-scale 5 -fs -sws 2 -vf
scale=%s:-3,"\
   "expand=%s:%s " % ( CONF.width, CONF.width,
CONF.height )

Just uncomment the line.

It's the conf I use to get good OSD & Subtitles in 800x600.

RE: [Freevo-users] Splash Screen - here is one for you

2003-09-26 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
The color can be changed only inside the plugin, but adding
functionality to set that in skin is very useful and required, so we
can implement that. And it's easy.

Skin is easy, take a look at the wiki, I just updated it to explain
everything. If you can provide some icons, backgrounds, color set and
how things should be laid out on the screen, I can code the XML.

Yes.

Yes, just the output method may change (Freevo own display instead of
HTML), that's because we need a well structured engine, so we just need
to re-code the UI, not the internals...
The ideal solution would be one that the UI is auto-generated.
Using XML, that can be done using 2 parts: one to specify the
"model": data types, default values, organization; and the "contents":
the data filled in by user.

XML->python is easy, it's almost automatizated and we have tons of
examples in freevo already. just find /FREEVO-SOURCE -name
xml_parser.py

but there are other ways to parse. Rob said there is a way to have
freevo load and persist memory to XML, it's called pickle (like Java
Serialize), just need to check how human-readable is the generated
file.

Anyway, the only problem with xml is to define a consistent structure
to fit our needs so we can make the system automatic, now or in the
future... however, this will be needed to python too, IMHO

>

Ok. I'm not engaged in any big part now, so I can help you with that.
I'm quite out of free time lately, but I'll do my best.

and please join -devel list :) If you can, also join IRC: channel=
#freenode server= irc.freenode.net

Python and web is easy. I don't know if you know web scripts, but it's
a normal program, but instead of normal output, you output HTML code.
Take a look at src/www/htdocs/*.rpy

I vote for a XML system, to be coherent with the whole .FXD system. So
we need to come with a good XML structure. Brainstorm has began!

Let's start a new thread in freevo-devel called "Configuration XML
Structure"

But I vote for AFS (Andrew FS) or CodaFS, as they can use local cache

Re: [Freevo-users] Problem with VCD menu

2003-09-24 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Dischi, Rob, Mike, Aubin, ... devs ...

Maybe "freevo setup" may check that and few more things and alert the
user:

* check if /dev/ are readable by the user... use the ROM_MEDIA
autodetection to get possible devices...
* check if artsd is running and alert the user about using "arts" as
mplayer parameter or disable arts (if mplayer doesn't provide arts -ao)
* check if there is network connection (at least to cddb) and alert
user to disable network in local_config.py

Anyone with some time do implement that?

I disagree with .py editing. IMHO we should come with a engine to auto
generate the config stuff.
In the begining it can be just read/write the xml, the logic can be
hard coded... but in future I would like to see soem automatic tool.
We can have a "Model" xml, that instructs how to present data and
defaul values and other "Data" xml, with the filled in values.
It will be "harder" to write, but then it's easier to keep
updated... I can imagine the hell to update the whole thing just to add
one var to freevo config...

IMHO it can be managed automatically, using XML to generate these
areas...

Maybe we can expand plugin config exposure to the world. Something in
the line I said above...

We can even have 2 xml or 2 parts in a xml.
one to say the format + defaults values, something like freevo_conf.py
and other with user-choosen values, like local_config.py

Rob,

I disagree with you. We already parse every FXD, and we have a lot of
them, one more is not more pain! it's just more from the same.

And, to the user point, if there is a UI, he will not care if it is in
XML or in .DOC :D

Maybe if we build a engine to parse/write the XML + knows how to modify
data, it is easy to do other things...

IE:

for v in config.getVariables()
   if isinstance( v, "list" ):
  # handle as list, we can even call it recursive, so
  # dir movies will be parsed as list of tuples. Ie:
  for e in v:
 # ...

And present UI based on this.

not sure if it's pickle or something like it.

Rob and I talked about moving configs to XML some time ago... but we
both have different priorities than that.
However if one want to go with that, we can help. At least giving
ideas and trying to define a good XML DTD to full fill our
requirements.
Then we can have an config "engine", that can be shared between web
and freevo display. Web is easier IMHO, so we can get it working first
than we go to the other display... maybe until then we get PyUI
integrated...

And the guy said he's .NET programmer, so may be familiar with XML
and stuff.

Re: [Freevo-users] Choppy DVD

2003-09-08 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
If your DVD is also CDR, then probably you use (you distribution did it
to you) ide-scsi module and that disable the DMA on that device.

Possible solutions:
- disable ide-scsi (you will not be able to record cds with kernel2.4)
- use kernel 2.6

Buttons have a default height of 25 pixels, however the font is taller.

I already fixed that to use font height as button height if no value

Hum, it should support.

Ok, I'll replace it too.

Also, it lacks support for other players than music & audio, TV and
others may come later.

Re: [Freevo-users] Problem getting freevo to recognize that a CD-ROM has been inserted

2003-09-03 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Next relase should deal ok with supermount devices, because now it
try to recognize drives based on mount points too (/mnt/cdrom[0-9]*)

Also, freevo mount/unmount devices itself. So you need that the user
freevo is running as is able to mount/umount devices.

   For instance, my fstab:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom autoro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
..

   Be sure "user" is there!

Re: [Freevo-users] RE: [Freevo-Users]PYLCD?

2003-08-27 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Ok.

So, I'll fix that problem.

BTW, what do you want to see in your 2 lines? (When in menu, audio
playing, ... ). Take a look at:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/freevo/freevo/src/plugins/lcd.py?rev=1.6&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup
and search for "layouts = {" to see how to create screens... maybe you
want the same as 2x16, but with more chars per line.

2x16:
 - Menu: Show menu name (ie: dir name) and selected item.
 - Audio Player: Music name and total/elapsed time
 - TV guide: channel and program selected

Is that ok for you?

You need a skin that supports that.

For instance, "info" skin does. You can change between different menu

2003-08-26 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Hello,

I'm the plugin author.

First, grab the new version (that avoid some breaks, maybe not this one
but I'll correct it later) from:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/freevo/freevo/src/plugins/lcd.py?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/x-python

and put it in: src/plugins/lcd.py

Ok, you saw the message before it crashes?
ERROR: No screens found!

It means you have no screens for your LCD. Now there is only screens
for 4x20, 4x40 and 2x16 LCDs. What are yours LCD dimensions? If it
differs from that you'll need to define your own screens (I can do that
for you).

Also, just to be sure: are you running lcdproc, right?

Re: [Freevo-users] Treat directories as movies

I may be wrong, but I think it's possible to do if you put the FXD in
the parent dir. It will eliminate the dir if the video is already in
FXD . I'm not sure, but try that.

it's a bug in docs/comments from idlebar.py from freevo <= 1.3.4... the
comment say you should do:
   plugin.activate( 'idlebar' )
But since Aubind did the code and used "interface" instead of
"PluginInterface", the plugin crashes... (I already corrected that in
CVS some days ago)

Also, IMHO that message regarding the Record Server was left from the
thread.

Re: [Freevo-users] LCD plugin - 1.3.4

2003-08-14 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
You need pylcd, that is not in the last release (sorry, will be in the
next).

In the meantime, get the file I'm sending you and put it in:

$FREEVO_PATH/runtime/lib/python2.2/site-packages/

where $FREEVO_PATH is where your freevo is installed (if you used the
RPMs, this should be /usr/local/freevo)

Hello,

Yesterday I updated the Wiki to explain the usage of some plugins,
there are some left, so someone (maybe the authors) could go there and
put some info on how to use the plugin.

It's useful since people don't like to go look at the code for just
install a plugin.

Why not release it as 1.3.3-fix or 1.3.3.1 if it's a bugfix?

Also, if bugfixes version change the last number, so the previous

we could ship freevo & runtime and a legal apps package. I can provide

Re: [Freevo-users] audio.cdbackup

2003-07-29 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
I don't think we should migrate. We could just keep like it is now and
I can put the binaries in Brazil, then we find a way to inform it.

I mean, we could link to a dir like: somesite.com/freevo/USA/
and in the same site we could have a somesite.com/freevo/NONUSA/ with
the illegal (in the USA) binaries. Debian does that, didn't they?
Also, we should check if it's true that if you link to a site that
provides or links to another one that provides the illegal binary
you'll be sued... for what I know, they must advise you about a
referenced site being illegal before any action could be taken.

USA (unfortunately) have some power (and money) to corrupt all the
world, Brazil is not an exception... However I can host the projet in a
University, so to someone start boring us they will need to ask the
Federals and then the University Major... that takes time...

but we should consider 3 pass encoding and VCD.

There is a script in mplayer/TOOLS to create VCD and other to create

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo as a persistant OS

2003-07-27 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri
Hello,

In a near future will ve deadly easy to do that...just wait 2.6 kernel
to be out.

In it you'll have software suspend, so you can suspend your linux to
SWAP and when you reboot it you don't need to go the reboot process
again! neither reload freevo... BTW, you will be able to shutdown your
machine when freevo is playing music and then restart it and it will
continues to play!
That's what do you want, right?
It will be something like Palmtops, you will have the option for a soft
reset and a hard reset: The soft is the explained above, the hard is
the normal reset... you will need to wait linux and freevo to start...

There is software suspend in 2.4, but it's experimental and you need
patches and some effort to have it working, but if you really want
that... feel free to submit a script to automate things :)

About the Graphical boot, take a look on Gentoo Games CD, it shows a
picture while booting, if you want the text, just go ALT-F2 :)

Yes...
What xmltv people say about that? I mean, many apps now use their code
and they make things harder and harder :)

I prefer a curses option, so one could install it via telnet and in
machines without X11

Yes, but that could be done using that configurator we were thinking
about some time ago... however that will require a huge effort on
defining the API and implementing it...
   Anyone interested? :)

that could be done, but will require a huge work too :) Let's hope
RedHat, Mandrake and others to make better HW config tools ;)

However, a small script that basically ask-download-install is easy to
do (and hard to mantain :( )

A separate package would be cool... and removing those files from our
release too! They will make our release smaller and avoid this kind of
mistakes...

I vote for including it... rob was looking for a way to compile it, so
we could compile xmltv and all its dependancies and put it in
runtime...

A basic config should be relative easy to do, like:
Do you want to watch movies?
   What are your videos dirs?
(If not, disable movies from main menu -- plugin)

Do you want to listen to music?
  What are your music dirs?
...

Hum... we have other priorities than that by now.

Sure, that would be really cool, but we need many features to code,
many things to fix and that could be covered by others, not necessarily
a freevo developer... What about you joying the Freevix guy and try to
get what you want?! That's the beauty of Open Source, the community!

Just take a look at the CVS! At least a lot of plugins they will have!
Also, more informative skins, more usability and if we're lucky and
MPlayer G2 is out, a better player, better integrated (I hope!)

Yes,

Freevo only looks (until now) in skins/fonts... Dischi said something
about including the X font path in freevo, but I don't know if it was
already done.

timesbd and impact are only used in my test skin named 'barbieri',
don't use that, it's a test-only skin.

FFmpeg can use mpeg1, they make the libavcodec, the better lib to

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo on Xbox?

2003-03-27 Thread Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri

Hello,

IMHO, running Freevo in a XBox is cool, kind of a Victory against
Microsoft. However it's stupid in the point of benefits/price.

Ok, it may come in a "beautiful" small case and it plays video-game.
However, it would be better to buy a Wallmart cheap (199) Duron and a
Matrox G200. You can make your own case if you want that. But notice,
this kind of thing could be hidden somewhere.

Also, people are testing those shuttle, capuccino and other small case
based computer... search for it in the mail lists
