RE: [Freevo-users] Bought a TiVo - looking for someone to take over Freevo HOWTO

2004-04-07 Thread Joe Stump
I hate Wiki's, which is why I created the DocBook. If you can figure out
a way to import DocBook into a WiKi then have at it. I'd like to see a
downloadable (printable) format kept up though ...

[Freevo-users] Bought a TiVo - looking for someone to take over Freevo HOWTO

2004-04-07 Thread Joe Stump
Hey guys,

I've been off-and-on maintaining the Freevo HOWTO, which is a DocBook
covering my trials with the Freevo:

http://zebulon.miester.org/~jstump/doc/freevo/html/

Now that I have a TiVo my Freevo box is been re-issued as something else
(what I'm not sure yet). So I was wondering if anyone out there would
like to take over.

Also, I have a streamzap remote that I'll trade for a $20 ITMS gift cert
(battery clip is broken, but taped on).

RE: [Freevo-users] xmltv_na stop on the 5th?

2004-04-03 Thread Joe Stump
I noticed my favorites didn't get set to record - maybe this is why.
I've been thinking more and more about saying "fsck it" and getting a
TiVo ... I can't spend 2 weeks fixing everything that breaks everytime I
upgrade - along with the xmltv breaking every couple of weeks ...

RE: [Freevo-users] no sound in recordings

2004-03-31 Thread Joe Stump
The problem I found was that -i (the line in or something) was set to 0.
I had to set both -l and -i for everything to work, but now I can't
watch and record.

Why could I watch *and* record with the *exact* same setup in 1.4 but
not in 1.5?

Problem with oss script was that mute and capture wasn't set correctly

[Freevo-users] no sound in recordings

2004-03-30 Thread Joe Stump
OK ... here's an interesting one ...

I don't get sound when I record and I don't think it's because of my
line in (I hear sound in the background when it records). Here is my
command line:

aumix -l 50 -l R; /usr/local/bin/mencoder -tv
driver=v4l:input=0:norm=ntsc:channel=7:chanlist=us-cable:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yuy2:device=/dev/video0:adevice=/dev/dsp:audiorate=32000:forceaudio:forcechan=1:buffersize=128
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2000:keyint=30 -oac mp3lame -lameopts
br=128:cbr:mode=3 -ffourcc divx -endpos 10 -o /mnt/media/Movies/TV/output.avi tv://;
aumix -l 90;

I'm still at a loss as to why recording worked perfectly in 1.4 and is
now completely broken in 1.5 (the above command line worked fine in
1.4).

[Freevo-users] mplayer, btaudio, no sound, generally pulling hair

2004-03-26 Thread Joe Stump
Well 1.5 managed to completely kill a fully working version of Freevo on
my box. I upgraded with apt-get a couple of days ago and held my breath
as it successfully recorded two of my favorites. But wait! A new bug in
the system: the recorded show played in the background.

Some browsing around yielded some info that I found useful:
http://freevo.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/RecordingInfo

I muted the line in and Oprah recorded just fine with sound (don't ask)
- I figured all was well ... doh. Seinfeld recorded WITHOUT SOUND later
that night and all subsequent attempts to get recording working with
sound (both btaudio *AND* line in) are not working.

Anyone out there actually have 1.5 working? Could people send some
example mplayer/VCR_CMD lines? I'm at a loss while recording was working
just fine (no background noise, sound during playback) in 1.4 and is now
TOTALLY broken in 1.5 - especially since I haven't touched anything
except Freevo ... except those pesky aumix commands ...

[Freevo-users] TV

2004-03-25 Thread Joe Stump
Is tvtime just plain broken in the new version? The mplayer plugin
simply goes to a black screen and immediately jumps back to the TV guide
and tvtime is all sorts of screwed up.

It shows the TV fine, but apparently is screwing with the framebuffer as
it feels it necessary to resize the tv picture (so about 5 inches of
black appears on the right of my screen). Then when I exit freevo has
done the same (all scrunched up in the middle).

What gives?

[Freevo-users] Freevo 1.5 issues

2004-03-25 Thread Joe Stump
1.) Volume up/down and mute doesn't appear to work anymore on my lirc
remote - is there a complete list of new mapping names?

2.) When I exit out of TV Freevo blacks out, re-inits and comes back all
messed up (not full screen) - it's like it's not re-running the
"OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP"

3.) This one's odd ... The record server plays the *sound* of what it is
recording while recording. Annoying is putting it lightly :)

4.) It appears that I can't disable tv.mplayer and enable tv.tvtime in
local_config.py - only in the main freevo_config.py. If I follow the
steps in local_config.py TV crashes, but doesn't if I load tv.tvtime in
the main config.

Also, is there a complete list of config variables that have been
changed or deleted with their new names?

Thanks!

[Freevo-users] Encoding to mpeg instead of divx/avi

2004-03-16 Thread Joe Stump
Apparently my default settings are to encode to divx, which for viewing
is great, but for burning to DVD isn't so great (DVD-lab only uses
mpeg).

Any ideas on how to change this so that I can record straight to mpeg (I
would assume mpg-2 is what it uses). Here is my current VCR_CMD ...

VCR_CMD = ('/usr/bin/mencoder ' +
   '-tv driver=v4l:input=0' +
   ':norm=NTSC' +
   ':channel=%(channel)s' +
   ':chanlist=us-cable' +
   ':width=640:height=480' +
   ':outfmt=yuy2' +
   ':device=/dev/video0' +
   ':adevice=/dev/dsp' +
   ':audiorate=44100' +
   ':forceaudio:forcechan=1:' +
   'buffersize=64' +
   ' -ovc lavc -lavcopts ' +
   'vcodec=mpeg4' +
   ':vbitrate=2000:' +
   'keyint=30 ' +
   '-oac mp3lame -lameopts ' +
   'br=128:cbr:mode=3 ' +
   '-ffourcc divx ' +
   '-endpos %(seconds)s ' +
   '-o %(filename)s.avi tv://')

Thanks!

[Freevo-users] Video out of sync on recordings / randomly dropped recordings

2004-02-18 Thread Joe Stump
Just recently, without a single software change Freevo just started
dropping scheduled recordings randomly (ie. 8:00 show is recorded, but
8:30 is not, then the 9:00 is) - there are no conflicts either.

Also, when I record the audio appears to be about a second or two ahead
of the video. This only happens about 10 minutes into a show, which is
really odd.

Anyone have any of the same problems? Any way to resolve the issues?

RE: [Freevo-users] Headless Freevo?

2004-02-17 Thread Joe Stump
Not that I can think of directly. In fact it's the opposite: there are
things you can do in the web interface that you can't do in the frontend
(i.e. schedule favorites).

Everything should work fine for simple recording.

RE: [Freevo-users] Hard Drive Space

2004-01-28 Thread Joe Stump
On my 80GB hard drive I have about anywhere between 70 and 100 episodes
of Seinfeld archived (because watching Soup Nazi on demand is why I
built my Freevo box).

I use up anywhere between 3 and 6 gb for regular everyday recordings
that are deleted daily. I have about 15GB free as of right now and I
record at 640x480 - plenty good enough to watch.

Re: [Freevo-users] add a BT878 to a G400-TV for capture?

2003-12-06 Thread Joe Stump
I have the exact setup you describe. IIRC the G400-TV marvel box was not
very well supported under Linux. Just like when you decided to get the
Matrox because of it's superb support under Linux I decided to shell out
the extra $20.00 and get a bt878 off eBay because it's the best supported
chipset under Linux.

I'm sure you could get the MGA running, but I'd be willing to be the
$20.00 for the BT878 will be worth it for ease of setup and quality of
drivers.

[Freevo-users] mga startup script

2003-11-29 Thread Joe Stump

I know someone on the list was looking for info on starting freevo with an
MGA framebuffer. Put the following script somewhere, set the x bit on the
file (chmod +x /path/to/file.sh). After that set

OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP = "/etc/freevo/foo.sh"

in your local_config.py file.

#!/bin/sh

matroxset -f /dev/fb1 -m 0
matroxset -f /dev/fb0 -m 3
matroxset -f /dev/fb0 -o 1 2
#fbset -fb /dev/fb0 -xres 768 -yres 576
#/etc/freevo/mga_ntsc_768x576.sh
fbset -fb /dev/fb0 768x576-75
#fbset -fb /dev/fb0 -left 54 -right 26 -lower 32 -upper 80 -hslen 40
matrox 0x1e 0xd0 && matrox 0x20 0xff && matrox 0x22 0xff

The line in 768x576-75 in my /etc/fb.modes file looks like the following:

mode "768x576-75"
# D: 49.188 MHz, H: 46.580 kHz, V: 75.008 Hz
geometry 768 576 768 576 32
#timings 20330 128 32 32 8 128 5
# L R U LO HS VS
timings 35000 36 6 49 3 42 0
#accel true
#bcast false
#double false
#laced false
endmode

This works great on my Sony Trinitron (32 inch).

Re: [Freevo-users] G450 Framebuffer

2003-11-27 Thread Joe Stump
Check out the OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP variable (may be spelled
differently, but you get the picture) in your local_config.py file. I had
some serious problems with the mgafb script shipped with Freevo. I'll try
and remember to send my custom one that I use with my G400 Marvel when I
get home.

[Freevo-users] bright red fbdev

Anyone out there having problems with *really* *bright* *red* colors.
Anything that is remotely red is bright as hell and washed out sort of.
The rest of the colors are perfectly normal.

Anyone have similary issues?

[Freevo-users] priority

Am I correct in saying this is not a working feature in the record server
or webserver? I have Seinfeld set the the highest priority, but it's not
being recorded *at all* because of other conflicts with favorites that
were added after Seinfeld became a favorite.

You can do manual recording from the web interface AFAIK. There are other
simple side projects that do manual recording that you could couple with
Freevo (ie. WebVCR+).

I think the answer to the question is the manual recording option that
lets you record at a certain time/day combination. You give up favorites
though. Also, the TV guide works fine without channel data AFAIK. You can
select a chan and it will give you that channel - though this may not be
the case with the new autodetection of channels (which you may be able to
override in the local_config.py).

Re: [Freevo-users] Booting into Freevo - MPlayer doesn't work

2003-11-22 Thread Joe Stump
Yeah, I read everything. Freevo plays DVD's and movies, it just doesn't
play them when it very first boots into Freevo (ie. after a restart). I
have to stop and then start freevo to get DVD's and movies to work. Until
I restart I get "Unknown error playing file". It's not a huge deal, but I
was hoping for a standalone box (and restarting freevo on each restart
isn't very stand alone).

[Freevo-users] pre-record amount? re-attempts?

2003-11-21 Thread Joe Stump
I have a question about the recording deamon (actually two).

1.) Does it record X minutes/seconds before the actual record time?
2.) If so if I pre-record 3 minutes show A and show B starts right after A
(but 3 minutes before B) does it re-attempt to record if it notices the
/dev/video devices is currently occupied?

These two are pretty important IMO because my Freevo box may not be in
exact sync with the cable company. And if these are configurable where are
they configurable?

Re: [Freevo-users] streamzap remote

2003-11-21 Thread Joe Stump
These are my steps

1.) Path (everything returns OK here)
2.) ./setup.sh (select streamzap driver)
3.) Select Exit & Run Configure
4.) make

It failes on make ... doh. I'm at work no - I'll send more detailed error
messages later tonight. Thanks for the help!

Two more things

1.) I'm using mga in fb (not X)
2.) As you play a DVD the a/v gets further and further out of sync the
farther into the DVD you get.

Also, does Freevo ignore the OSDL_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP in
/etc/freevo/local_config.py? I tried adding a fix I found, but it didn't
work out very well.

[Freevo-users] mga -> tv out

2003-11-20 Thread Joe Stump

Guys,

everything is coming along well, but I'm having a small issue (of course).
I recently had a freevo crash (box went down in flames due to a new/bad
kernel) and when I reinstalled I upgraded to the new deb packages (which
kick ass). So for my new problem ...

TV-out with my Matrox G400 was great with the old fbset scripts (ie
mag_ntsc_800x600.sh, etc), but the new one doesn't format the screen
correctly. It's fine on the left side, a little too high on the top and
about 3 inches of black on the right. Any ideas out there?

[Freevo-users] Registry type global variable location?

2003-08-18 Thread Joe Stump
I'm working on a small patch that allows the TV guide to remember the
station that the TV was last watching. For example if you choose a station
(say #2) and then you use c/v to change the channel in tvtime to another
station (say #36) and then you go back to the TV guide it forgets where it
was and goes back to the first station (#2 in this situation).

This isn't what most users expect. They expect when they hit escape the TV
guide will be sitting on #36 (the last station they were viewing). At
first I thought I would create a global variable called "CUR_CHAN" which
held the current channel (TunerNextChannel(), TunerPreviousChannel() and
TunerSetChannel() would keep this variable up to date), but then I
realized there may be a global location where variables such as this
should be stored (I'm actually using config.CUR_CHAN right now).

However, I'm stuck at the event PLAY_END right now. I know I need to put a
self.rebuild() in there with config.CUR_CHAN as the station, but I'm not
sure how to go about doing it.

So my questions ...

1.) Is there a location where global variables like this should be put?
2.) Could someone explaing the parameters of TVGuide.rebuild() to me?

Thanks!

--Joe

ps. I know it's a small and somewhat insignificant patch, but I have to
believe this annoys people besides me.

Hi,

I added a web radio plugin to freevo. The problem is: what should be

send me (or the list) _good_ urls (stuff you listen to) and descibe
them:
o Name
o URL
o genre (e.g. pop, clasic, info if it's mostly talking, ..),
o language (of the talking between the songs)
o homepage (if the station has one)
o maybe a small description
o player info (does it play only with mplayer, only with xine or

If you have some nice web tv urls, send them, too, but mark them as
video, so they will be placed inside the movies directory.

Re: [Freevo-users] import error with Image in CVS

2003-08-16 Thread Joe Stump
I think this is incorrect. Freevo 1.3.2 works fine and appears to have an
Image.py file in the PIL directory of ./runtime/lib, however, the CVS
version does not appear to have ./runtime/lib.

Re: [Freevo-users] Video quality

2003-08-14 Thread Joe Stump
I've recently been playing with video quality. I'd say the lowest you
want to go is around 1200 for a bit rate. I've recorded at 4000, which
is super quality, but requires quite a bit of room for an hour of video
(about 2GB if I recall correctly).

1500 I believe is where I record now, which is ok quality and only
700MB per hour of video (which is small enough to fit on CD). Your
mileage may vary.

I was hoping for a non-command line interface for this type of operation.
It looks like WebVCR+ is exactly what I'm looking for. I think I'll be
using that to record my stuff for now and then move back to Freevo when
this option is more robust.

MySQL supports both subselects (as of 4.0) and foreign keys (through
innodb tables). Also, I'd be wary of SQLite's statements that it's faster
than MySQL since its tests were ran against 3.23 and not the latest 4.0
(which is odd since 4.0 has been stable for quite a while).

[Freevo-users] Recording Scheduler

2003-08-03 Thread Joe Stump
My recent trials with the recording aspect of Freevo has led me to the
conclusion that in order to do *serious* recording within Freevo a better
backend will be needed. I know one of the goals of Freevo is to build an
out-of-box application, but for those of us yearning for reoccuring
schedules, etc. I think something more advanced is needed.

I think I'm going to build something with a MySQL backend that allows
people to always record a show at a specific time on specific days. My
thinking is that this will require Apache+MySQL along with a scripting
language (I'm proficient in PHP so I may go that route) - this side
project would also require a alternate plugin for scheduling shows that
put data into the MySQL database instead of the current flat file
structure.

Any other ideas? I'm interested in being able to schedule shows that are
on every day (Seinfeld for instance) without having to schedule them each
morning when I wake up, which is how it currently works with Freevo AFAIK.

[Freevo-users] Recording Quality

2003-08-03 Thread Joe Stump
I finally got recording working (yay!), but the quality leaves a LOT to be
desired. The video, although it's relatively smooth, is dark and grainy.
The audio is pretty screwed up too (doesn't sound well at all). Live TV
plays like a champ using tvtime so I'm assuming it's something with my
recording settings.

Here is my current command:

 /usr/local/bin/mencoder -tv
on:driver=v4l:input=0:norm=NTSC:channel=2:chanlist=us-cable:width=320:height=240:outfmt=yv12:device=/dev/video0:adevice=/dev/dsp:audiorate=44100:buffersize=128
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1800:keyint=30 -oac mp3lame
-lameopts br=128:cbr:mode=3 -ffourcc divx -o
/mnt/movies/Movies/Recorded/08-03_12:30_-_M_A_S_H_Commander_Pierce.avi

Note: the above is the command I have been testing with.

[Freevo-users] Recording

2003-08-02 Thread Joe Stump
I'm trying to get the PVR for Freevo working and I'm having some problems.
The cron job is all set up and running without any DLL problems and the
logs don't show anything of any interest, but I'm not getting any recorded
shows and I think I know why.

In record_config.py my RECORD_SCHEDULE is set to
/var/cache/freevo/record_schedule.xml, but all of my freevo stuff is in
/tmp/freevo and the record schedule *appears* to be
/tmp/freevo_record.lst, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: [Freevo-users] Re: cpickle problem

2003-08-02 Thread Joe Stump
Freevo's stable 1.3.2 didn't retry for pickle. I actually had to change
the import cPickle as pickle to just import pickle. After that and
clearing my cache it worked fine.

I'm guessing I need to edit the /etc/freevo/local_conf.py but I don't
even
know where to begin with that damn thing.

This is on a system where I'm wanting it to display to a PAL TV, I
have a
wintv 878 based card, a radeon 7000 with tvout, a cmi8738 soundcard, a
dvd/cd drive, 4GB hdd, a p3 500 processor and an old kingston 10mbit
isa nic
I had laying about.. Using the ne isa module for that.

I'll also attach my xfree config too, ideally at the end of the day I
want
to be able to just have this machine connected upto a tv so I can watch
films, listen to music through it using the remote that came with my
wintv
card to control it etc

  Great.

And do you intend to complete it? It looks good right now
(clean, no fancy layout), and docbook looks like the way to go.
It would be great if you could integrate more stuff from the
WiKi into the doc. The WiKi is good, but I would like to have a real doc like
  yours.
