Hi,

some people reported a strange problem: some DVDs are _sometimes_
shown as normal cds. My new Finding Nemo DVD has the same problem:
insert it, it's a cd and this error is cached forever :-(. But if I
remove the cache and try again, it's a DVD. If I insert a different
DVD and the strange DVD later and remove the cache, it's a cd again.

This bug is somewhere in libdvdread. I tried to find it, ifoOpen fails
with a read error (also shown in /var/log/messages). I have no idea
why this happens only when the disc is new in the drive. I also found
out that lsdvd works for some reason. I compared the code -- no
differences at this point (in fact, it's only DVDOpen and ifoOpen). If
someone can find this bug, please send a patch to the list.

mplayer also ALLWAYS works fine, just like lsdvd.
Me too I'll compare the code and see if I can find something
As a quick solution and also for runtime users I made something which
is bad for the original mmpython design: I wrote a lsdvd wrapper for
mmpython. If you have problems with some discs, install lsdvd and get
mmpython from cvs.

Are you sure this fixes it ? Because I am using mmpython cvs since
yesterday because I wanted the lsdvd output.
The problem is freevo's DVD folder keeps saying 'No Disc' and I cannot
enter the folder . (Yes, I cleared the cache..)

Looks like a dsp routing problem.
What version of alsa are you using ?
looked at volume controls with alsamixer ?
Tried upgrading alsa ?
also, look at the contents of the files in /proc/asound/card0/emu10k1,
it contains some routing info.

Hi,

I would like to configure freevo to use different settings for audio

I'd like to playback a 2 channel audio-file on a 5.1 speaker set and I have

channels=6:6:0:0:1:1:0:2:1:3:0:4:1:5). This works great.
But, if I playback a 6 channels audio-file (i.e. within a DVD), then only 2

My point is now: how do I configure freevo to have different settings for

I don't know if it is possible for different audio files, but you can
use different settings for audio files, DVD's , avi's, ... I'd suggest
you use your -af channels line for default, cd, rm,vcd and rmvb, and use
-channels 6 for all other types that may contain 6 channel audio (esp.
dvd, avi)

 'vcd': '-cache 4096 -panscan 0.5 -zoom -af

[Freevo-users] Recording through alsa

2004-04-05 Thread Zeratul
I updated the wiki with some info on recording through Alsa without OSS
emulation in the btaudio page .

You have two options: use snd-bt87x (which is the alsa equivalent of
btaudio) or use the line-in.
mencoder doesn't support btaudio (yet?) and the same problems arise with
snd-bt87x, but it should work with mp1e with the patch from the wiki.
Access the snd-bt87x mixer through alsamixer -c 1 or alsamixer -D bt87x

For analog loopback cable recording add option 'alsa' to -tv options
list, and take as adevice your soundcard (emu10k1 in my case)
adevice=/dev/adsp did NOT work for me (records only silence).

I have the following /etc/asound.conf:

pcm.emu10k1 {
  type hw
  card 0
   }

   ctl.emu10k1 {
  type hw
  card 0
   }

pcm.bt87x {
  type hw
  card 1
   }

   ctl.bt87x {
  type hw
  card 1
   }

Recording from line-in with the sound MUTED works, so I can use
mplayer/mencoder for timeshift recording (of course, seeking doesn't
work then).
Hope this is of any help for someone.

Try muting the Line-In channel instead of setting the volume to 0.

Why would you want to use directfb or dfbmga ? (just curious)
Does it give you better performance or features than -vo mga ?
I simply use -vo mga and it works perfectly, both on screen and tv-out
My duron 700 can even to realtime divx recording at acceptable
resolution (400x300)

Re: [Freevo-users] DVD Problem

2003-12-15 Thread Zeratul
See the thread 'starts with only no disc in the drive' from second half
of november for an explanation and patch.
There are two options, use dirty patched dvdinfo.py (which still doesn't
work always for me), or don't use the runtime and install all depended
packages.

Hi,

A question here from a complete noob with freevo, so be gentle ;-)

I have just installed 1.4 using the install script, everything seemed
to be ok, I added this line to the local_conf.py to get it to spot my
dvd drive

ROM_DRIVES = [ ('/mnt/cdrom', '/dev/dvd', 'dvd') ]

when I run freevo everything works as I would expect, if I put in a
VCD the system recognises it and plays it fine, when I insert a dvd,
freevo crashes with the following errors;

Pygame Parachute Traceback:

I have read of similar errors, but not found a fix for it.

Mplayer and Xine both play DVDs without problems. If it is important
my system is running Mandrake 9.2 rc 2

Cheers for any advice

Drew.

Re: [Freevo-users] DVD Crash and Channels incorrect

2003-12-05 Thread Zeratul

DVD's have also been a problem. Sticking in a DVD after loading Freevo, or
starting Freevo with a DVD in the drive causes Freevo to crash without fail
with a stack trace including many threads and one dvdinfo.pl? Does this
ring a bell?

See the thread:
'Starts with only no disc in the drive' in freevo-users archives.
There is a dirty fix for dvdinfo.py there, or just don't use the runtime
and install every dependend package. That's a lot of work but definately
worth it !

I have the same problem with the overdriven sound actually. I switched from OSS to ALSA last night, but now I have no sound. (I'm hoping I just haven't found the right channel yet.) See the volume control tips at

for setting the alsa volume.
Especially this part:
Recording from line/mic/cd(analog):
In alsamixer http://opensrc.org/alsa/index.php?page=alsamixer, set
Capture to something reasonable (I have 53) and *hit space bar* to
enable Capture. Then set the volume for the
source you want, and hit spacebar for capture on that too. I have AC97
set to zero and AC97 Capture set to 100, not sure if this does anything,
but mic/line/cd recording now works for me.
If you're using line in on the SB live connected to line out on bt848
(as most people seem to do)

Re: [Freevo-users] Re: Big runtime problem

2003-11-28 Thread Zeratul
Just need to know the number of tracks, angles, subtitles, durations etc.
Standard info, available through libdvdread .. which uses libdecss for
encrypted dvds .. which is what segfaults in the runtime version

And yes, dvdinfo via mplayer is a workaround.
I stopped using the runtime yesterday.
I installed every required dependent package.
Now it works as it should..

You search in a while(1) for the 'There are' part in mplayers output
yet mplayer output contains usually something like

There are 9 titles on this DVD.
There are 7 chapters in this DVD title.
There are 1 angles in this DVD title.

So instead of the number of titles, we get the number of angles
Maybe we should try
while (title_num == 0)

So that the first occurence of 'There are' is used.

OK, bad hack, but try to replace your dvdinfo.py with the attached

It uses mplayer to parse the num of titles on the dvd. This is a bad

don't get the number of audio tracks/subtitles/chapters/length of each
track. This is a freevo only solution, Thomas will kill me (the

Please try it.

dvdread. But including decss will be a legal problem.

OK, bad hack, but try to replace your dvdinfo.py with the attached
file.

It uses mplayer to parse the num of titles on the dvd. This is a bad
hack (TM) but at least we get the number of titles of the dvd. But we
don't get the number of audio tracks/subtitles/chapters/length of each
track. This is a freevo only solution, Thomas will kill me (the
distance between us is not so big) if I put that into mmpython.

Please try it.

[Freevo-users] Re: Starts only with no dvd disc in drive

2003-11-24 Thread Zeratul
Dischi,

Please check:

a) can mplayer/xine play the dvd? Maybe it's the wrong region code?
b) do you have libdecss and if yes, what version?
I guess it' one of those. It's a bug in the c part of mmpython which
interfaces to libdvdread. Please replace dvdinfo.py in the runtime
with the attached version and send me the trace again so I can see
were it crashes.
old version:
/usr/local/src/freevo-1.4/runtime/lib/python2.3/site-packages/mmpython/disc/dvdinfo.py
Dischi
Since I am having exactly the same problem since 1.4rc2 I did what you asked and can answer your questions.

a. Yes mplayer commandline works fine, as well as xine
b. Yes I have libdvdcss version libdvdcss2-1.2.8
It happens on *some* dvd's (about 60 percent of those I rented in the past few weeks)
One example: The new Lord of the rings Two Towers extended edition (region code 2
europe).
I'm using region code 2 and it is definitely NOT a region code problem.

Here is the output with your new dvdinfo.py:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] freevo]# ./freevo
Warning: freevo_config.py was changed, please check local_config.py

You are using version 3.5, changes since then:

With the original dvdinfo.py I got the same stacktrace as Justin T Wetherell,
i.e. crashing on dvdinfo.py line 88

I upgraded all packages I can find. Running mandrake.

Hope this is usefull info. Some DVD's with different IFO's work fine. Kernel does NOT report any IO errors on the disc.
