Yup, neither do I.
Cable TV here is always 4:3, so all 16:9 movies are cropped. Quality
is not as good as DVD and you have to remove the commercials. So the
only reason I record TV is for normal shows that don't come out on DVD
or that are 4:3 by origin.
P! Cable TV. I have no cable :( I am in "developing" country, living
in "bad location" when it comes to cable companies. They just won't put
cable here .. frs. And I am living in the capital city, LOL.

However we have quite good (state-owned) channel with no advertisements.
It is sort of prostitute - it becomes whatever they want. E.g. for the
time of the olympics it was a "sport channel" for 24 hrs a day :) There
are interesting movies from time to time, subtitled and these would be
worth recording for me. Currently they are broadcasting all Kubrick's
movies, sometimes they do all (or most) Woody Allen's movies. ... and
yes, that was them who broadcasted Twin Peaks for me :)

a) it is in 99% dubbed (not VO). Thats why I bought DVD to watch it in
English, French, German, Chinese... whatever the original was... (ah
-with subtitles, of course :) )

Fortunately most programs here are in the original language with
subtitles.
Yes, I envy the TV in Netherland. Although it is funny - the "patterns".
I am in Amster regularly, every year in the middle of September. And
there are the same movies on TV, every year :) Maybe just a coincidence :)

However I guess the French and Germans are having the same problems as
we (Czechs) - too many movies dubbed.

b) sound is just stereo, not DD, DTS, 5+1
Depends on your source ofcourse. Digital TV has MPEG2 video with 5.1
sound. In theory, because most programs are still broadcasted in
Stereo :)
hehe, Digital TV here is _experimental_ only, working in 2 cities and
nothing is for sure. The politicians can't agree on the multiplexes and
arghhh. It would just made me angry if I kept writing... so I will
stop here :)

...I guess, this should go to some other for.. ahhm...list as this is
really not freevo related :)

Anyway, have a nice weekend, everyone.

I spent one night in a hotel in Switserland this summer and found that on all
channels the movies were dubbed... very annoying indeed. How come they don't use
subtitles? It must be cheaper to do that I guess.

The story of German television I heard is that a vast percentage of the germans
still cannot read (!). Maybe an ape-sandwich :-) story though.

[Freevo-users] (re) Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-10-01 Thread Dale Cooper

Hi.

Do not know whether am duplicating this one .. or maybe it is available
already. Have not setup finished so can't say.

But what about different formats for the final recorded video file? I
mean - some sort of equivalent of LP and SP on the regular VHS VCR? Or
should we (users) do this outside of freevo?

"LP" (=lower bitrate and this stuff) would be obviously usefull for
recording long lasting series for example. While SP for regular movies.

Hum, on the other hand, is anyone actually recording movies from TV to

Hi,

sorry for the late answer. This answer mail is an answer to all
configure ideas send in this thread.

First of all: it would be cool to have an easier way to configure
Freevo. But since my todo list is very long, I won't have time to do
that. There are two starts for this somewere, but both didn't get
finished.

Yes, it is. There are different ways for setting stuff:

o local_conf.py: it should still be possible to use that file, it is
  easier for testing.

o inside freevo: you have limited control with a remote (no complex
  texts)

o use of the webserver

There should be a new file for all config variables for this. It
should contain the name, default value, doc and value type (list,
string, int, list of list of string). About the plugins: we need a new
way to detect: what plugins are there? What options do they have?

> Lets look at how to assign the dir to store tv recording: how?

I guess from inside freevo you can't do very complex stuff. Maybe
settings this is part of the webserver.

Some variables can be changed without restart, others can't. I guess
we should add an option 'restart freevo'.

1. will only work with configuration inside Freevo
2. will only work if plugins use the setup.py interface from freevo.

we need more skins to need that

I like this idea. I just the other day had a telecine'd movie which
*really* needed some specific config to get the ratio right. A plugin
to create an fxd for a file, with some inteligent option-like menu would

[Freevo-users] Re: Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-21 Thread Ole Andre Schistad
One thing that I personally miss and would find very useful is a menu
hook for creating and manipulating fxd files. Quite often there are
files that for some reason or other don't play back properly unless you
add custom parameters. It could be that the aspect ratio is wrong, or
that it needs a specific codec to play back. While all of this can be
fixed from the command like, those of us who run freevo on dedicated
boxes need to log in to the system remotely from another computer and do
it from there.

What I suggest is a hook to create an fxd file for all media files in a
folder from the directory context menu, and ways in which to change the
mplayer-parameters inside those fxd files from a drop-down list. The
actual parameter list should be configurable by the user, and ideally
also chainable (ie, multiselect will concatenate all your choices into
one mplayer-options line). I think this would save a lot of hassle for
many of us.

A second suggestion is to add hotkeys to freevo that work in all
contexts, including during movie playback, so that a freeze of the SDL
gui, Freevo itself, mplayer, what have you, can be solved by a keypress
and not by remote logon (again thinking dedicated box here). At least a
way to trigger /etc/init.d/freevo restart from the remote would be nice,
possibly also a ctr-alt-del event. Not sure how doable these are, but
they would be useful methinks.

 - if freevo crashes the system starts with the last known good

just my crappy ideas.

One thing that might be nice:

I update my listings every night, which of course updates my
favorites. For the most part this is good, but if one of the episodes
that's up for recording is one I don't care about, I'd like to be able
to delete it in such a way that updating the listings won't re-add it
to the recording queue.

Not a big deal, obviously. At the moment, I just wait until the day of
the recording to delete it.

I second the idea of allowing configuration over the web. You'd need
different levels of access, however. An admin access level and a
normal user level. That way, my roommate or girlfriend can't destroy
the box.

Right now I can't think of anything else (beyond what has been
suggested). It's a damn good product. But I'll emphasize making it
easier to record live TV. Gotta account for the times when you're
scanning the channel guide and think, "Holy crap! Gotta record that!"
when the show in question is currently playing.

Thanks for the hard work! I too would like to participate in
development, so I'll be brushing up on Python ASAP.

Java is good. There is a nice tutorial on Python.org

Most doc is inside the code. And that is also incomlete. If missing
doc is the main problem for people helping, I guess I should add it :)

There are some docs what is possible in the Docs dir. But there is no
complete DTD, sorry. Maybe someone can provide it. The doc is in the
Docs dir and inside the code (urgs). Just grep for .

The web interface has very basic features right now. I like ideas 1

has a mbus interface 2 are about 10 lines of code.

You can do that right now. With ENTER on a dir or in the config
file. Default settings are random only for audio.

We have a sqlite db running in the background. We should start to use
it.

For all that we need the sqlite db. The integrate has stopped some

I guess the db part is the most important feature for your ideas.

Why should I kill you? I'm open for every good idea ... and for bad,
since if people implement them, I guess a lot a crasy ideas will make
the way into freevo cvs :)

There is a small incomplete PluginWriting HowTo in the Docs
directory. But I agree, we need more internal docs. I started adding
many comments inside the files I touched (see the image directory for
details). But a global doc how files interact and what is were in the
source is missing. I guess I need to write a comment what the file
does in each file and a small doc about the global design.

Feel free, if answering your questions will result in more developers
I'm happy to answer.

> 1. What are the __init__.py files in each directory?

They are called when you import the module. E.g. when you say 'import
video', the src/video/__init__.py file is parsed. An __init__ file
should not contain much code (I know, we have big __init__ files, but
that is bad).

Were __init__ is usefull:
look at gui/animation/__init__.py. There is an 'from render import
create'. After that staement you can use gui.animation.create.

All the playlist stuff is in playlist.py. Right now, you can't
interface with it, but you can change that if you like.

On top of my todo list now. Expect more docs on Monday.

You need to rewrite the playlist.py part for that. Our playlist code
is very limited. You may also want to take a look at the sqlite
interface (Aubin: what is the current status?)

Also on my todo list. That is a bit more complicated, the tv part will
change.

It is possible, but very bad documented. You can put a password file
in a directory. But it would be call to have an item in the directory
configure menu to set/del a passwd.

We need two kinds of docs: for developer and for users. If you look at
the WiKi, I guess there are many things you know that is not in the
docs.

The WiKi sucks. There is no login so some stupid bots add porn links
to it and we have to remove them later again. This isn't very hard,
but I don't like it.

[Freevo-users] Re: Ideas for next major release wanted: Example Survey

2004-09-09 Thread Fons van der Beek
Hello all,

Yesterday I suggested a survey for freevo usage.
Because i currently need survey software for an other project I tested the software
with questions in respect to Freevo.
I used phpsurveyor (http://phpsurveyor.sourceforge.net) and created a survey.
A hardcopy of this quick and dirty sample can be found here:
http://213.10.252.115/freevosurvey.pdf this link is valid for about a
week, of course the webinterface looks better and is more user-friendly. All questions
i could think of are included in this
hardcopy, but it may not be complete.

If anyone knows an additional question or suggests a modification please give me a
line. ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
If the developpers of freevo are intrested in activating phpsurveyor on their website
i can provide them of assistance and of course
the survey it self.
I am also willing to maintain it.
I don't know how may hits are on the freevo webpages, if my system isn't to slow, the
survey can also be run on my webserver (and
freevobox)

As stated, it's quick and dirty implementation of a survey, not all questions are
complete, because i am not a native english
speaker and it's a quick and dirty implementation, it needs some serious shaping.

Just let me know what you tink about it. It's certainly NOT complete, but I tried to
include many of the topics on the
mailinglists...

P.S. The used webserver is a home-server with a rather slow ADSL-connection, so be
patient while downloading.

 With kind regards.

[Freevo-users] Re: Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-08 Thread Fons van der Beek
Here is my input on ideas how the next major version of Freevo could look like.

At first the "looks" of freevo:
Comparing freevo to competetors: freevo already looks professional and good (actualy
after finetuning freevo looks best) tastes
may vary but all main ingredients: playing media, viewing metadata, connecting to
internet are OK! A finetuning of OSD (by using
bmovl(2)) would be fine BUT beware of extra dependencies:

 with version 1.4
freevo strength was the easy initial installation if mplayer worked freevo provided a
fine
 user interface!

 with freevo version 1.5
Freevo looked better! but installation was more difficult and may scare new users off

The needs of users for a new version how freevo will be used depends on the current
usage of freevo:
-a computer with a crt(tft) and attached keyboard
-a setopbox: a dedicated pc with output to a tv or plasma screen
-a computer with a crt(tft) and keyboard WITH tv or plasma screen

users with an attached crt, keyboard may benefiet from input features like browsing and
renaming mp3 tags etc
users with an extra TV attached to their computer may benefiet from a dual screen
configuration
users using freevo as setopbox want a "simple" user interface and may benefiet from a
webinterface allowing them to configure and
operate their system with a second computer.

IMHO extending the webinterface may serve all users in all configurations...
Extending input like renaming mp3-tages, grouping radio stations, creating playlists
is much easyer done by using a webinterface as
by using a remote control or an attached keyboard to a setopbox

Therefore my question/suggestions would be:
-Perl scripts for downloading main dependencies.
-Keep the TV interface simple (but as beautifull as possible):
It's for displaying and playing playlists, albums, movies and dvd's.
Everyone also children and housewife's should be able to operate the "TV interface"
of freevo

-Usage of buttons like: red, green, yellow, blue would result in a more user friendly
programm
-Usage of statusbars/screens when streaming could also add functionality
-Usage of a sliding controlpannel could add user comfort
-Define a plugin interface as stated on emails before: the businterface
-Extend the webinterface: configuration and modifying things like media tags,
playlists, radiostations, xmltv bindings, stationlist, jukebox etc etc.
-A second setup step could be by using the webinterface for finetuning the
installation.
(this serves every user, by using a browser on a second or the main freevo box)
-Add a jukebox function not based on using the TV set but by using a webinterface.
Personally i use a modified version of coolmp3 database as a seperate jukebox on my
freevo box
combining them (database features for playing and modifying mp3's) and using them
over a webinterface (i don't want my tv on all
the time) would certainly add functionality.

Users that do not benefit from a webinterface are those users only having ONE computer
attached to a TV with no second computer
around, or no second crt and keyboard around.Designing a good webinterface with "good"
looks would certainly make freevo unique to
it's competetors. (the other's all "suck"). A good designed webinterface could also
serve as "remote control" for pda users.

If all requirements, dependencies, interfaces are known, I would be happy to help
implementing/migrating the current web interface to
a new one with new functions like remote control, jukebox, configuration etc etc.
Just name what program's that will be used and i will get to know them.

The requirments/sepcs could be:
-a lightwight implementation of a webserver other than apache+php+mysql
-Hardware specs (generating graphs on the freevo box?)
-at what speed the webserver should work: lanspeed or modemspeed
-Graphical design of menu's
-by using java clients (i do not prefer them)
-dependencies: imagemagick, sqllite,python, businterface ?

On the other hand.just for being complete
A completly other aproach could be: controling the freevobox by .e.g.
tightvnc.. (if freevo is used with X)
Currently I use this aproach and it serves me well, but ofcourse i don't have all
input features as described above simple for the
fact that freevo doesn't have them.

I wonder if a survey for users of freevo wouldn't be usefull:
"knowing the users and their freevo usage would serve the developpers most certainly"

Some questions in this survey could be:

-Hardware specs:
 -CPU, memory, diskspace
-(Remote)controll usage: serial lirc, capturing card, usb, keyboard?
 -Used graphic cards
 -Used sound system: OSS /alsa
 -Is AC3 used?
 -Usage of TV out
-How many (current or planned) TV or SAT cards in te freevo box

-How are spekaers connected to the system?
 -By a 5.1 Amp?
 -Directly: computer speakers?

-How many computers are connected to the freevo box?
-Is the freevo computer contiously conncted to the internet.

-Usage rating: current and future use
 Picture viewing
 Movie viewing
 DVD viewing
 MP3 playing
 Weather
 Ripping DVD's
 Ripping CD's
 TV viewing and recording
 SAT viewing and recording
 Digital TV viewing and recording
 Need for dual screen configuration?
 Answering machine for telephone?
 Email usage on freevo box?
 RSS feeds

-Need for?
 Installation wizards
 recording Radio

I this sounds good, i can setup a survey for the freevo pages.
If it doesn't sound goodforget it, it's just an idea

Just my 2 cents

As stated in the text on the original email expanding the movie takes considerable cpu
time, for
a feature that is not often needed.

I guess an option would be:
Expand a movie smallar as a given minimum let's say e.g. 450x600, if the movie is
"bigger" downsize or upsize
the graphics of the "OSD" to movie size. This would enhance performance of the system
and preserve a decent layout. Perhaps sizing
of the "OSD" must also be dependend on the aspect ratio of the movie.

my 2 cents...

I you can tell me how. I looked at the dvb standard (I will only do
that for dvb because I have no other card) and there is a vps
flag. Maybe the next version of Freevo will have vps support for dvb,
maybe not, depends if the stations use that flag. Also showview sounds
like a good idea, but IIRC no one has cracked the code yet.

As I said, I have not fully
configured Freevo for video operations yet so I have no clue how
recording _exactly_ works, sorry.

However, if Freevo used VDR
(http://home.t-online.de/home/hubertus.sandmann/VDR_installieren.htm)
for recording, it seems to support VPS "natively". But maybe I am wrong
and it can't be used.

Currently: yes! The basic concept does not, but I guess the best way
would be always use the default resolution and scale it down before
sending it to bmovl. With that it's easier to move objects from on
screen to the other without resizing.

Bittorrent is a great program, it it could change the way we download
big files ... but right now, when someone thinks of bittorrent, he
thinks of illegal downloads. The legal video downloads are close to
nothing.

Since I don't want to spend my free time to fight with film studios
that Freevo is illegal (They think very simple and stupid: freevo can
use bt, bt can be used to download illegal videos ==> freevo is
illegal. Let's sue them).

We know that, it's close to the top of my todo list.

Oops, the sentence is not finished.

Re: [Freevo-users] Re: Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-08 Thread Jon Scheer
First off, I want to say that Freevo is great, and if you never made any
changes to it again my wife and I would still love it and continue to
use it. :-)

Concerning ideas for future releases, when navigating menus, I think it
would be nice if the menu option you selected was briefly highlighted
(say, for 250msec) before going into that menu (like on many DVD
players). I use LIRC to control Freevo (from any TV location in the
house), and every now and then when I push a button on the remote Freevo
(LIRC, really) detects it as multiple presses. Thus, I may be at the
top level of the menu, then when I press the button I'm suddenly 3
levels down. Having a brief delay before going into the menu would not
only help to know where one is about to go, but it would make it
look/work like many (all?) DVD players, etc.

A second idea is an extension of Faser's comment about images -- can the
EXIF information be read and the image rotated automatically?

Again, thank you for Freevo -- it's a gift to the open source community.
Take care.

already part of Freevo, don't have me box running).

Exif is supported, but it only has minor informations. For my vacation
pictures I want at least add a nice title, maybe a location, a small
text and maybe a list of people on the photo.

One other suggestion (I don't know if easy or not) have direct access menus
on the top level (e.g. that I can define a new Menu to directly start a
certain radio station).

I will think how to do that.
