the problem was with xine trying to use the xv driver. It depends on a couple of things; are you using your own mplayer or a public one? If your system lacks support for encrypted DVDs, you might have that problem. Sounds like mplayer might not be working with your sound card... if you have artsd or whatever the KDE sound mixer thing is called it might be blocking. I disabled arts, and now it works for mp3, audio-cd and sound from the mpg-file. I think I don't need to recompile mplayer, as the system will be used only for freevo.
