Re: Yo Yo Adapter's

2001-07-23 Thread Thomas Ethen

Sending back the original two, keeping the new ones-checked to see if there
was a difference and the resistance seems to be it. New ones low, old ones
high-high resistance seems to mean heat and sparks.
It's two YO YO's, for two Pismos with low resistance! That's harder to say
five times fast!

Why are you sending them back if you just got them? Because of the
resistance? And if you have no idea what this means, why are you checking
it?

And why do you have five yo-yos for two Pismos? (say that 5 times fast ;^)

Just wondering.

Re: Yo Yo Adapter's

2001-07-23 Thread Tom Ethen

I got my adapter's today for both my Pismo's! I checked the resistance on
all four and the Delta Yo Yo (which sparked a lot) was five times the
resistance of the new ones, while the Samsung Yo Yo (which only sparked a
little) was only twice the resistance of the new ones. I have no idea what
this means, but I thought I would check them out before I send them back to
Apple.
The new adapter's don't get as hot as the old ones did either!

crust, makmac, kyle,

truly, the next time anyone asks me why I continue to pin my colours to the
Cupertino mast I will tell them of the momentous day when, from across the
world, the massed armies of mac afficionados rallied round to save one poor
little Pismo from a life as a doorstop. The story will be handed down through
the generations, doubtless growing more fantastical with the telling ("no, it
was a 6Gb RAM chip he was trying to install, not a 4Gb one", etc.), but the
core message, of these fabled beings' devotion to their platform in the face
of the Redmondian onslaught, will always shine through...oh, must stop now, I'm
gushing:)

I forget where I read this, but a simple way to compare the value of
upgrades like this is to divide the speed by the price, highest number is
"best" value. You will always pay a premium to get the highest speed.

500 MHz / $399 = 1.25 MHz/$
466 MHz / $249 = 1.87 MHz/$

Good idea. And I can only echo what someone else said: make sure you have
the processor card seated. I put some new memory into my own Pismo a week
ago, and had the same result: dead Pismo. After trying to reseat the damn
processor card for the 5th time or so, I finally pulled out the manual...and
it says pretty clearly in there, make sure you have the memory in the top
slot removed, because the place you need to push to make the connection for
the card is directly underneath where the chip would be. There will be an
audible click, and you will feel it as it hits. Then reinstall the top
memory chip. I was a mess for about an hour there, thinking I'd killed my
Pismo - which is my ONLY computer, and which I've only had a few months (and
which is the best computer I've ever owned!).

Mine was far too tight in my Wallstreet and since I recall a much earlier
post from someone who damaged the AC port on his Wallstreet after 2 weeks of
using a yo-yo adapter (prior to the recall) I decided to loosen up mine.

I rather barbaricly spread out the shield on the plug using a flat blade
screwdriver. I slowly worked the screwdriver around the perimeter of the
shield prying it outward. This resulted in a tiny gap at the seam of the
shield which loosened it up enough to relieve the tightness. I was careful
not to apply any significant pressure (while prying) to the jack in the
center as I didn't want to break it. I repeated this until it was loosened
up enough. It's still tighter than my original black AC but I feel more
comfortable with it.

Now it fits quite nicely. I don't think it would have loosened up enough
over time. I figured it would be less costly to break the adapter than end
up needing to replace the power board in my Wallstreet.

Do this at your own risk of course.

I'm awaiting my new one, but I do have a spare yoyo adapter I've used
with both the Wallstreet & the Lombard for about 9 months. They're
somewhat tight when new (like most things, like coffee plungers), but
wear in pretty quickly. It's no tighter or looser than the standard black
adapter (we should christen the black baby adapter sometime - 'Son of
Delta'; 'Idiot from Quanta Who Subcontracted Delta' or something?).

New adapter hard to plug in

I hate to even post another comment on the adapter
exchange program, but my newly-replaced adapter's plug
is extremely tight in the power jack and I'm worried
it will damage the jack's mount. Anyone else have
similar concerns/experiences? If it does break off
the mounting for the jack, would Apple repair it out
of warranty because it's due to the new adapter?

Re: Dead Pismo

2001-07-23 Thread mikeferguson

We have a new symptom

After Kyle's (helpful) post following my original cry for
help, I went back and took my book apart again to
jiggle the processor card about a bit to seat it properly.

When I did this I noticed that the processor, the heat
shield and the heat sink were all hot to the touch (not
burning, but hot). Now, the thing hasn't booted, but it's
definitely drawing enough power from the battery (which
I just stuck back in when I reassembled it) to cause this
heating. I put it all back together again, battery
included, and left it for ten minutes and checked again -
sure enough the heat shield and sink were hot again.
And in the interim it still wouldn't boot.

Now I don't think that a supposedly dead Powerbook
should be drawing ANY current, much less enough to
cause it to heat up like it has. I've now removed the
battery, 'cos I'm worried.

This give anyone any more clues?

PS On a lighter note, the PB1400 I bought on eBay last
week arrived this morning just after the Pismo died -
perfect timing, though I wish I'd been able to introduce
them to each other (sniff, sniff...)

The processor is probably not fully seated. Reseat it and see what
happens. It's a common thing with Pismo's. Also. Note that you are not
supposed to remove the heat sink from the Microprocessor board. The 2
small phillips headed screws are supposed to stay connected, otherwise you
remove the thermal transfer pad from between the processor and the
heatsink. It'll probably be fine, but if you are anywhere near an
electronics store get some thermal conductive glue and put a small amount
(3mm wide line) around the edge of the thermal transfer pad, so that the
connection remains solid. In the future just remove the one long screw off
to the left and leave the heatsink assembly attached to the microprocessor
board.

Dead Pismo

2001-07-23 Thread mikeferguson

Oh dear, I've killed it.
Trying to install a 256Mb upgrade in the bottom slot.
Put it all back together again, pressed go and nothing,
nada.
Here's what I did:
1. Popped off the keyboard
2. Took the two screws out of the heat shield over the
processer, and the longer one out of the big heatsink
under the lower left hand side of the keyboard.
3. Pulled gently at the tab on the side of the processer
card to lift it out. It was very reluctant. So I pulled the
one for the hard drive (which came out quite easily),
then had another go. Eventually it came free, though it
felt more difficult than I had expected. And in the
process I knocked the heatsink off the top of the
processer (though this seemed to clip back on OK). But
I didn't hear any 'breaking' noises.
4. Removed the old 64 chip and replaced it with the
new 256 one.
5. Reversed the above. The processer card went back
in quite smoothly, and I felt it had engaged OK in that
big socket with all the little pins.
Question - could I have dislodged something during this
process? If so, what, where, and is there an online
resource which can show me how to put it back?
I'm 99% sure I haven't fried it with static - I discharged
myself and didn't move while I was working on a clean
desk etc etc.
Any and all help gratefully received before I reluctantly
admit my failure to a £50 per hour techie.

TIA

Mike
