D'oh! Sorry, forgot to mention- you will probably want to go to your home
user folder, select its priledges and set it to "everyone" then "none". Now
the other non-admins won't be able to mess with it.

Make sure they don't know your password though, or you're screwed via a
simple CLI command or trip to netinfo.

It's not as hard as they are making it out to be, really.

Create a new user, make sure "allow user to administer", and turn off
automatic login.

Create an applications folder for him, or put the applications you want him
to have access to within the root applications folder.

Anything you do not want him to have access to, put in your own user folder.
Anything you want to keep out of his folders but don't want him to have
access to, use "show info" to then access privileges to set to your desire,
or download "batchmod" from versiontracker.com which can be simpler.

He won't be able to touch your stuff at this point. Works out pretty well.
You can even "leave" stuff for him by throwing it into your public/shared
folder.

If I knew of one I would surely pass it on but I am a Unix user
specifically (this whole LEMLists.com thing is taking up ALL my time
right now) and if I could take the time away I would reinstall X and
check it out myself.

If you can use the command line (as SU) try these commands:
groupadd "group name"
usermod "username" -g "group name"
That should change the user you made to the other group as his
primary group. If that doesn't work use "-G".

I am sure another Unix admin can correct me on this if I am wrong or
give more specific instruction there.

Well if you're willing to wait for the next release of OS X (jaguar) it
will be an admin tool in the users preference pane. It will be out
later this summer (as OS X 10.2 probably..or 10.5).

That is, unless they remove it from what they already have in the betas
for some reason.

And no, I didn't sign a nondisclosure agreement :o)

Find the application... get info, choose the Permissions option, and
you can configure your user to only load run (Execute) the
application. Another option is assign him to a different group than
the other users, only allow the main users to run those programs and
set your brother to a different group. You then disable the Everyone

I'm looking for a way to restrict the use of certain applications and

There are a couple of ways to do this- you didnĀ¹t mention whether you want
to use OS9 or OSX.

1) Move all your mail accounts to IMAP so they aren't stored locally, but
rather on your server. You could even be at a friends house, enter your
settings and all your mail will be there. Downside is speed, and if you're
like me you will use a lot of storage space. OS9 & OSX applicable.

2) Install office on both machines, then while they are both closed down
copy your /documents/microsoft user data/ folder (or just the identities)
between the two machines, replacing the one on your laptop before you go.
Everything will be there now, then if you get new mail you'll want to
reverse the procedure when you get home. OS9 & OSX applicable.

3) Create a shell script using ditto or rsync (or use one of the tools at
VT) that at a click will archive your mail to your laptop if it is plugged
in. Overwriting the user folder on the laptop could cause problems if
entourage is running. Watch out for rsync, as it doesn't copy resource
forks, only data- this may or may not cause a problem with the entourage
database. OSX applicable.

To install RAM in your wallstreet just take off the keyboard, Heatsink and
then the processor card. To remove the processor card just find a plastic
tool (similar in shape to a screwdriver) and pry it up on the right hand
side. There are 2 tabs and slots on the left...slide it out and it will be
in your hand. be sure to put the 2 tabs in the slots when you reinstall, and
after jiggling doen the card to be sure it is aligned properly firmly press
doiwn on the right hand side with your thumb. You will be able to feel it
pop into place.

Hey guys,

A couple of my friends got Tibooks, and now that my G4 Sawtooth 350 is getting a
little long in the tooth (bad pun, sorry), I'm thinking of adding a portable to my lab.

So, I do have a question about life with a tower and portable. How do you keep email

I'm on the road.

Any insight is much appreciated.

The only guide I know is the Service Manual. Very hard to find these days.
Apple keeps shutting down the sites that carry them. Email-me and I'll give
you more details.

I think that 4753 is the Wallstreet.

Lower slot RAM on PBG3/266

2002-07-12 Thread gd2

Can anyone point me to a guide on installing lower-slot RAM on a Powerbook
G3 Series 233Mhz? I'm not sure how the proc card comes out to get to the
lower slot.

(And by the way - which PB is model M4753? Lombard or Wallstreet?)

Thanks -
Gene

There's a glowing review at Barefeats.com right now.

lemlists.com

2002-07-12 Thread Dan Knight

Our monumentally huge project for the summer will be setting up a new
domain (I just registered lemlists.com) for our email lists and creating
our own software to manage subscriptions, process messages, etc. It's
going to be a huge undertaking, and it's going to make things much better
for all of us.

One idea I've had for funding this is selling email addresses
@lemlists.com for $5/year. The bulk of this would go toward running the
server and paying for bandwidth, with a small percentage coming back to
Low End Mac for administering the lists.

We're working with Ryan Coleman of to set this
up. The goal is to set up a pretty spam resistant server that can be used
as a POP3 mail server -- and for Web-based email as well. Best of all, if
you're subscribed to any of our lists from a lemlists.com address, you'd
never have to worry about AOL, mac.com, etc. going down or bouncing
messages from the list, since they'll be on the same machine that handles
the lists.

We'd like to hear from any of you who might be interested in supporting
the LEM lists and having a lemlists.com mailbox for $5.00 per year. This
will help us determine the feasibility of the project, how much drive
space we'll need, and whether Coleman Web will need to upgrade their
Internet connection to allow for more bandwidth.

If you're interested, DO NOT reply to the list and DO NOT reply to me.
Send an email to Ryan at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> with the subject
"lemlists.com".

Whether we go through with mailboxes or not, we will be working with
Coleman Web to set up the Low End Mac List Server in coming days. I'm
guessing this project may take several months of programming and
debugging to get things just right. I'll keep you posted.

At 118K miles, your Volvo is just about broken in. You should be able to
double it. But you knew that.

I'm keeping in on the radar, but I won't commit right now. I still have over
a year on AppleCare and according to a post I read on comp.sys.mac.portable,
although installing the upgrade wouldn't automatically void your warranty,
it would apparently to the sole Apple discretion whether a damage would be
covered or not. Apparently, the motherboard would probably be out. That's
one of the most expensive part, with the LCD. Speaking of the LCD, the
person reporting this said that the LCD would most likely be covered, unless
Apple would decide that the upgrade, generating too much heat, would be the
cause. In such case, the LCD wouldn't be covered. I also read that there
were a few reports on XLR8YourMac that complained that the 400 Pismo was
generating much more heat than with the G3 processor.
