Poor Quality Video Out on iBook SE (2nd Ed)

2002-07-30 Thread Ian Jones

My iBook screen is perfectly clear, but has ALWAYS (since purchase)
translated to a fuzzy, barely readable image through the AV Out onto
a TV screen or through a digital projector. However, a DVD plays
quite clearly through AV Out, so I guess the cable is OK. Happens
under OS 9.2 as well as OS X. Anyone know what the problem is here?

It is weird to have the blurry DVD Player controls on the TV or
projection screen when the movie itself is quite clear.

It's because the resolution on TV's are so shitty.

Re: Comments per ADC newsletter

2002-07-30 Thread Luis Sequeira

Apple still clings to this notion that single buttons are easier to use,
despite overwhelming user feedback to the contrary. Explain to me again
how holding down a key AND clicking a mouse button, or even worse
clicking and holding for a period of time, are easier, more intuitive,
or more productive?! Sometimes it's ok to just admit you were wrong,
guys.

Actually, it is a nuisance trying not to hit the wrong button. The
apple pro mouse, without actually a button (the whole mouse *is* the
button) is the most comfortable and less rsi* provoking mouse I have
ever used. I just rest the palm of my hand on it and i don't have to
twist my fingers to try and avoid press the right button when I meant
the left one (or was it the other way around?). Thanks, Apple, for
not bowing to pressure on this one. Anybody can get a cheap two,
three or five button plus scroll wheel mouse for very little. I don't
need that.

Re: Ok, dead DVD drive, what next?

2002-07-30 Thread DavidWedge

FIrst,
My original posting of this to the list was accidental---sorry. It was meant
to be private...

However, we carry these replacement Panasonic drives. They fit the drive
sleds perfectly, and will perfectly replace the Panasonic drive modules
(SR8174, or SR-8173, etc).. When you have the Panasonic drive, the bezel
(door) will fit perfectly on our drive.

If you've got the LG, you're in for a tough go. The door won't just bolt
up--it would have to be epoxy'd on, and even then the buttons don't really
line up with the release button eject button..

We're working on sourcing for the doors but it's slow going...

Thanks,
David

Why on a smaller than 8 gig partition?

On my G3 Mt (upgraded to G4400Maxpowr) the installer required me to

this may only apply to older G3's. Paul

GraphicConverter?

Hi all,

I have some questions about using GraphicConverter and its features. Before
I post them here (because they'd be off-topic) does someone know of a
GraphicConverter forum or some other similar place where I can ask these
types of questions more appropriately? I have only dabbled with image
editing in the past and now I need to do a little more with it (still
nothing advanced, but new to me!) Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I have some questions about using GraphicConverter and its features.

Perhaps it isn't totally ontopic, but its rather full-featured for
its price *and* everything works without paying. So just download it
and try it, see if it'll do what you want. I own photoshop (and have
paid for more upgrades that I want to think about) and still paid for
graphicconverter also because of its useful feature set.

handle. If the iBook is set to 800x600 the TV is made for 640x480. So try

 The TV has S-Video connectors.

 Thanks.

You need the little S-Video adapter cable that came with the Pismo, and
 a mini-jack-to-whatever-audio-connector-you-need cable (probably
 dual-RCA).

Nah, you don't need the adapter cable -- you can do better than that. Just
run down to Radio Shack and get yourself an S-Video cable so you can pump it
in to your TV directly. The adapter is for those poor souls (like myself)
that don't have S-Video inputs on the TV.

memory upgrade confusion

2002-07-30 Thread Van Turner

Hi there!
I'm new to PowerBooks and to this list. I need some help.
I want to upgrade the memory in my Series II WallStreet. It has 128MB in it
by way of 2 - 64MB modules. According to AppleSpec, it's only good for 192MB
and the 128MB module can only go in the top slot. According to LEM, my
machine is good for 512MB. That would mean putting two 256MB modules in a
machine that's officially only good for one 128MB module and one 64MB
module.
Which is correct? I know of some people who have had good luck installing
high volume RAM to desktop machines that aren't officially tested for it. (I
put 128MB modules in a PowerMac 7500. Officially, it's only good for 64MB
modules.) I don't know about trying this with a laptop. I don't really even
know how to get into the machine. Could use some advice there, too.
Thanks in advance!

Both are correct. Apple's specification says that your box has been
tested for up to 192 MB. The reason is that, at the time, there were
no such memory modules that large. So the 192 MB max is based on what
Apple knew at the time and, as far as the company is concerned, is now
willing to support. Nowadays, thanks to the speed of technological
advances, it's easy to reach the memory max. But Apple won't help you.

: You can upgrade to 512MB, but you have to make sure that the memory modules
: are compatibles. You don't have to buy at a premium, but just make sure
: you're buying from a reputable RAM reseller. I've never had any problem with
: DataMemory Systems http://www.datamem.com/. They don't have the best
: deals, but they're very reasonable. They used to have 2nd day delivery from
: AirBorne for $7, but they now offer next day delivery for $9. Check
: RAMSeeker http://www.ramseeker.com/ too before deciding...

And be sure the RAM specifically says it's for Wallstreet. The modules
used in Pismo (and up) often will not work correctly for your PowerBook.

If the video quality is low, no amount of expensive hardware can make it
 look any better.

Are you using the S-video connection or the monitor connection? If you are
using the S-video, would it not be sending a lower quality image than the
digital image to the monitor? I haven't had any experience yet with these
things, but I would use the monitor connection if I could.
