I think it was a word of mouth type mixed with some personal agitation against MS. I have used Entourage since it was initially released, and I have never had a corrupt database. I rebuilt my database once a month for maintenance. My wife has never rebuilt her database, and she has no problems either. The old version of it had a 2 Gig size limit, at which point it would be un-usable (and it has now been changed to 4 Gig). I have known a couple people via the newsgroups that have encountered this limit, but I have never come close. Those people who did encounter it had imported OE5 or some other mail database that had been used for the last 5 or 6 years. The largest my database ever had been was about 120 Megs, and was back to 60 or so after the database was rebuilt. I normally have about 1000 emails, including saved, new, and deleted items. Notes from the List Mom
Where's the List Mom been for the last week? Here, but due to our host moving to a new mail server, I've been unable to access my [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address with Claris Emailer. Since I have several scripts and macros for Emailer that I use with the lists and we've been unable to find a solution to the problem of accessing this mailbox from Emailer, I've switched addresses. Any future correspondence regarding subscriptions, posting problems, etc., should be sent to == [EMAIL PROTECTED] == instead of the old address. At least I can check this mailbox with Emailer. I've spent the last hour or so forwarding lists digests and listmom email to the lemlists account and hope to get through it all in the next few days. (I have to work at the camera store today, so I won't be able to get much done this morning.) I have not had the time to update the list footers; hope to find the time this weekend. I will update the published FAQ for all the lists with the morning site update. Email sent to the old listmom address should automatically forward to the new one. -- Dan Knight, president, Cobweb Publishing, Inc. http://cobwebpublishing.com http://lowendmac.com http://digital-views.com http://digigraphica.com http://lowendpc.com http://reformed.net Please have your pet peeves spayed or neutered. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: [PB]Entourage
About the database corruption, I think it also has to do with Outlook Express. Many people use Outlook Express, and it actually is easily corrupted. I've heard a few people reporting the same problem I had - on startup, a dialog box pops up saying The end of file was reached. There is no explanation given, it's absolutely impossible to get into the program, and reinstalling it doesn't help. It might possibly work if you reformat and reinstall the system, but I'm not sure. Since Entourage looks a lot like OE and since they're both by MS, I can see why there would be some confusion. Yep. The 40 GB one I bought most recently was made in Hungary. The drive arrived with minimal packaging and, at first, I sorta wished it would have come with more documentation. When I thought about it though, I probably wouldn't have been able to read it anyway. My Hungarian is very rusty. I've rebuilt the data base every few months as it get a bit bloated but have not had a serious problem in the several years I've used it. And I know I push it's limits with all my folders and subfolders. I track 11 email addresses and I'm currently storing 17,465 messages (and I just recently purged about 4000 old messages). I love that my Rules can redirect mail from all my mail lists and clients, to their designated folders. I'm also smart enough to do a regular backup of the Identities folder which stores my database, because no program is perfect and I'm sure that one day I will loose everything. But I haven't yet needed to call on one of these backups. I'm on the fence right now about switching to Apple's Mail because OE5 is really the only application I currently run in classic and I'm not willing to spring for a full version of Office X just to get Entourage. When connecting through an SMB share to my Winbloze XP box, transferring large files, I am getting network utilization rates (as shown on the Windoze side) of like 5% of my 100mbps connection. That's 5mbps. Doesn't this thing have 10/100 ethernet? Is this just a bad SMB implementation? I know the networking cable/switch/system is fine. The switch reports that the Tibook is connected at 100mbps, as well as my Windoze machine. Plus, connections over SMB shares from one windoze box to another on the same segment at home (yes, I have lots of machines) get transfer rates of nearly 80-90 mbps. How can I speed up a Ti 400?
I have a Titanium Powerbook G4/400 that seems as slow as molasses. The applications are not to slow, but all actions in the Finder are. Launching Apps, Moving Items, whatever...I spend an unreasonable time watching the spinning beach ball. I have 384 MB RAM, OS 10.2.1 and the stock hard drive. What are my options? I have considered a larger and faster hard drive - if that will help -how much will it help? I don't want to back up to OS 9. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... On a dial-in connection smb is glacially slow; afp is mereley like using a dial-in connection to transfer files, ie works ok. If you have OS9, DAVE is real nice in that it works, but it's slower than molasses a lot of the time, too. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Is this just a bad SMB implementation? I know the networking I just answered my own question - yes, it's a bad SMB implementation, I guess. Network tests show 90Mbps from the tibook to the same server. Oh well .. maybe I'll have to try out Jaguar. Mark -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... 8500 not installing
Put a new PRAM battery in it. Got it to install OS 8.1 without any problem. Still won't install 9.1. Same error as before. The installer script doesn't recognize the computer. Curious thing. The Apple System Profiler sees the 8500 as a 7600 series. Is this right? Is the 8500 counted as a 7600 series computer? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: [PB]Entourage
Just a question. Is this easily corrupted in your own experience, or via word-of-mouth from others? I've been using Entourage for about a year and a half, and I've never lost and email, and any corruption I've had was easily fixed with a database rebuild. I haven't counted recently, but I have well within 5 digits of email in all my trays combinde. (well over 10,000 emails). I've never had a corrupted database--only bloated. I've certainly never been forced to rebuild the database because I was unable to open it, and I've never lost an email. For the record, Claris Emailer 2 also used the single database approach, which is where Entourage gets its scheme. The same people who wrote Emailer wrote Entourage and OE. As I mentioned, I'm a long time Eudora user; I'd never trust my personal data to the clowns in redmond (personal agitation), and I too have 5 digits worth of emails, but who's counting. So yes, I learned of the corrupt database problems from others who have posted on lists and newsgroups. Why do you find it acceptable to have to routinely rebuild a bloated database file? I don't see why I should have to put up with that nonsense. It just seems illogical to put all of your eggs in one bloated basket. I've used Lookout, Lookout Express and Entrailage and they have nice UIs I suppose, but the data storage scheme is not simple enough. And yes, I know that the lead Emailer developer now works for the evil empire, that's common knowledge. I never liked Emailer much either. I've worked in the software industry in Seattle as a test engineer and systems analyst so I do have some experience with most email apps. For IMAP, Netscape is better than Eudora, but I am talking about POP3 since that is what I use at home. At work we use Netscape Messenger on XP, NT, 95 and OS/2 boxes and it seems to work well enough. But Eudora's filtering is far superior to Netscape's, and that is another reason I've stuck with Eudora. I like Powermail's UI and filtering the best, and would switch to it in a flash, but no way am I using an app that puts my mail in a database file. Mozilla? Yeah, it's the best browser I've ever used. I've trashed Omniweb, IE, Netscape, Opera and iCab since Mozilla got stable enough to use. But I don't have a need for Mozilla mail. Eudora stores my email in plain text files, easily backed up, easily moved and easily read with TextEdit. Simple and elegant, no rebuilds necessary and no un-sightly bloating. It's a design that I appreciate more and more with each passing, trouble and maintenance-free year. Ross Cottrell Windows is like a Mac in the same way that a transvestite is like a real woman. It's 95 percent the same, and actually what some people would prefer, but not really the same for those who care about small differences. - John Dvorak -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
