Not sure about the specific specs for the iBook regarding the height of a
hard drive, but I think I saw a new drive from IBM that has 60 GB of
storage, if you're not too concerned about money. If you are, then there are
20 GB for less than $100 and $30 for a little bit more than $100. I
personally have a 20 GB in my Pismo and I still have plenty of storage. Of
course, I'm not editing any digital video on it and I'm not even ripping off
any of my CD...

firebottle n.obs.: A large, primitive, power-hungry active electrical
device, similar in function to a FET but constructed out of glass, metal,
and vacuum. Characterized by high cost, low density, low reliability,
high-temperature operation, and high power dissipation. Sometimes mistakenly
called a `tube' in the U.S. or a `valve' in England; another hackish term is
glassfet.

You should be fine. I started using Mac OS X 10.1.x initially on a
Wallstreet at 300 MHz and I was happy. Jaguar (10.2) is way faster than 10.1
so you should be OK.

Hi Andrew, I have a Mainstreet with the 12" screen, and put the same question
to a technician who does this conversion, here is his reply:

You can put the 13" on ok, but all the plastics and the ribbons, hinges, and
invertor must be changed as well.. It's a lot of work and hassle.. I charge
$500 for the 13" changeout and $575 for the 14.1" change out (with a new LCD
of course)..

I didn't go for it so I cannot recommend him, but if you want to contact me

I'm not sure I understand
"the Mac driver ONLY looks at the serial port for the printer"
It sounds like the powerbook is the print server looking for the printer
on the network to forward a job received over the ethernet. Or is it
that the powerbook needs network drivers to find a printer on the
ethernet?
I wanted to have a printer hooked up to a box that plugs into the
ethernet.
Once I have the print job converted to ethernet (proper drivers on
powerbook) then it doesn't matter whether the server box connects to the
printer via serial or parallel since all incoming jobs are ethernet?
I suppose I should also be worrying about whether my Linksys BEFW11S4
(?) wireless switch/router will pass the appletalk commands properly. I
think I read some posts here suggesting that that might be an issue.

Thanks for your help

Re: DVD on Wallstreet

Occasionally on my Wallstreet the cards would eject while the mechanism
would remain "cocked" as it were. The solution was to use a paperclip in
the eject hole when the slot was empty. This allows the card to be inserted.

Firewire2Go ??

2002-10-29 Thread Richard Smykla
Hi, All.

Undergoing a frantic effort to get my Cardbus Firewire2Go card to
work with my Lombard Powerbook. In both OS 9.2 and X.2 my card is
'seen' by Apple System Profiler, but I can't mount my LaCie
pocketdrive through it, even though it's independently powered. The
same drive works fine hooked up to my G4's built-in firewire port.
I've applied Newer's special 'enabler' patch (v1.01) for OS 9 (and
removed Apple's cardbus enabler extension, as indicated by NewerTech
faq), but it still doesn't want to mount in 9.2 Likewise, wondering
if anyone's gotten the card to work in OS X Jaguar. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. TIA.

well, first off, the Startup Manager (holding down the option key)
doesn't list OS Options it lists bootable volumes, and only shows
the currently selected OS for that volume.

downgrading an OS 9 System folder to a previous version (by running an
older update) is -always- a bad idea. if you need to go back a version,
it's better to just Clean Install OS 9 from scratch.

Pismo OS X.2/9.2.2 boot problem

2002-10-29 Thread Peter Johnson
Okay, here's the deal... for some reason my Pismo has
decided that it doesn't want to boot into OS 9.2.2 any
more. The machine is configured thusly:
400MhZ G3
384 MB RAM (256 lower + 128 upper)
25GB IBM HD, partitioned into 4 partitions.
OS X.2 installed on one partition.
9.2.2 on another.

I don't use 9.2.2 very much, so the other day I go to
boot into it for some work stuff and it keeps locking
up during the extension load. I track the problem down
to the Open Transport extension. So I copy the Open
Transport extension from another machine (an iMac,
probably a stupid idea, but I didn't have any other
choices at this point) and drop it into place to try
to fix the boot problem. The machine boots fine, but
Appletalk refuses to start up.
Okay, so I decide to run the 9.2.1 update to revert
all the OT extensions to earlier versions, then
re-update to 9.2.2. The 9.2.1 update freezes half way
through installation, upon reboot the Powerbook
refuses to acknowledge that the 9.2.2 partition is
bootable. I can select it in the Start Up disk control
panel in OS X.2 and when booted off a CD, but it
doesn't show up as a choice when the option key is
held on bootup.
Some last tidbits, I was able to run the 9.2.1 update
and the 9.2.2 update on the partition when booted off
a CD... but am still unable to boot off the 9.2.2
partition. In OS X.2, "classic mode" works just
peachy.
I ran Norton Disk Doctor and Tech Tool Pro on the
disk, fixed some minor problems and was still unable
to boot into 9.2.2.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I also have a Wallstreet (233MHz, 512k cache, 320MB Ram) and I can't
connect using the modem either, under Jaguar (I don't know about
10.1.x, because I jumped straight from 9.1 to 10.2). In my case,
neither the 10.2.1 nor the Modem Update that came out a while ago did
any good. The modem works fine in 9.1.
This seems to be (at least in my case) more than just a modem script
problem, because I cannot use any modem that I have tried (internal,
external, or cell phone using the IR port), although they all work in
OS 9.
