I don't think a Firewire port could give the laptop the 46 Watts that it
needs to run, and at the correct polarity etc. So unless anyone wants to
correct me, no it can't.

cigarette lighter adapter

2002-11-13 Thread John Slavin
Hello all:

I bought an iPod for my daughter, together with kit that includes an
auto adapter. It plugs into the firewire port on the ipod to provide
power. I was wondering if this could also be used to power her iBook
which has a firewire port. Anybody know?

Apple only supports up to 512MB RAM in the machine. Check out Knowledge
Base article #43126
.

That stated the machine will handle up to 1GB.

When I want to connect to a Windows shares, I usually select "Connect to
server..." at the Finder. Then, I click in the left column, not on any item
and that seems to refresh the different kind of protocols that are
available. In that left column, you should see the server name, or an IP
address. That's how I select.

Gates's Law: "The speed of software halves every 18 months." This oft-cited
law is an ironic comment on the tendency of software bloat to outpace the
every-18-month doubling in hardware capacity per dollar predicted by Moore's
Law. The reference is to Bill Gates; Microsoft is widely considered among
the worst if not the worst of the perpetrators of bloat.

Well this is interesting. I just checked the subscriber list for the swap

Almost every single subscription in feed mode reports 17 bounces. Nearly
every subscription in digest mode says 6 bounces.

Coincidence? I think not.

I am also posting this to a few of our other lists so that swap list
subscribers can know what Apple is up to and request that they stop
blocking this list that you've subscribed to.

November notes from Mom

2002-11-13 Thread Dan Knight
This is the first of two emails I'm sending to all of the lists this
evening. This one covers a bunch of little topics; the second will
address top vs. bottom posting.

--> Annoying Messages From the List Server

We are aware of the annoying messages. We have made Maclaunch aware of
the problem. It has been going on for months, and it looks unsolvable. We
do not run the server; we have no way to fix it.

We will be making an end run around the problem eventually. That's the
next point.

--> lemlists.com

We have registered our own domain specifically for handling our 30-some
email lists. We have the server up and running, and I will be leading a
team in the creation of the greatest list management software ever
devised for handling multiple lists. But it's going to take time.

After I send these emails out, I will begin to outline the program and
the steps needed to create it on the Mac Webmasters email list. If you
have programming experience and are at all interested in this open source
project, please join the list.

It is most likely that the program will be written in PHP and make
extensive use of MySQL. Other suggestions will be welcome on the list.

--> Off Topic vs. On Topic Postings

These are unmoderated lists. Except for the swap list, where discussion
is forbidden, we try to keep the focus on the Mac and Mac related issues.
Mac related includes things you do on the Mac, such as printing, browsing
the Web, handling email, etc.

We have some leeway for off topic postings, but not much. The busier the
list, the less likely we are to welcome an off topic thread coming along
and taking over digest after digest. This is particularly true of lists
such as PCI PowerMacs, Vintage Macs, and the iMac List, which are already
quite busy.

--> The Nannies

The list nannies help keep the lists on target, try to correct violations
of netiquette, and have the full authority to temporarily or permanently
ban subscribers in cases where they believe it is necessary. They also
have their own list where they can discuss these decisions with each
other.

In a pinch, a nanny can act on a list that isn't their own, but this will
mostly take place if the regular nanny is on vacation.

If you have problems with the way a nanny is handling something, don't
rant on the list -- send a reasonable note to the nanny. Rants will
generally be grounds for unsubscribing someone permanently.

--> The Lists

We runs a host of lists. One for pre-G3 PowerBooks and another for G3 and
G4 'Books. One for pre-PCI Power Macs, one for pre-G3 PCI Power Macs, and
one for G3 and G4 models. We also have clone lists for Motorola, Power
Computing, and Umax, as well as the Old Mac MP list for the DayStar
clones and other dual- and quad-processor models.

We have a list just for System 6, and another for those installing OS X
on unsupported hardware. We have national lists for Canada, the UK, and
down under (mostly Australia and New Zealand). We even have lists for the
Apple II, Lisa, and Newton.

Because of this, we ask that you try to ask questions on the appropriate
list. We allow some leeway, but not too much. For instance, don't ask
iMac questions on the Vintage Macs list. Plus or minus a generation is
our guideline if you must ask questions about off topic hardware.

--> The List Mom

I am running myself ragged. I will be taking most of the last week of the
month off. I need to get away from the responsibilities of 30-some
mailing lists, 3-5 new articles on Low End Mac, and all the other stuff
for a few days. Clear my head. Let the nannies handle the lists. Maybe
even find some time to do some programming, photography, reading, etc.

Top vs Bottom Posting

2002-11-13 Thread Dan Knight
One of my pet peeves -- and something a lot of you have probably received
a note about -- is people who quote the entire original message right
down through the footer. The header. The ads. Everything.

I go through each digest, scrolling past screen after screen of quoted
material. It's too much. It's unnecessary. It's poor netiquette. And it
violates list guidelines, which ask that you quote selectively in your
replies.

We had a lengthy and heated discussion of this and replying netiquette on
the iMac list. After reading it all, I did some statistical analysis, put
down my foot, and created a new rule for the lists. Well, guideline, if
you want to be precise.

--> Bottom Posting

I learned how to reply when I joined an email list and saw how others did
it. They would quote the line or paragraph they were replying to and
follow it with their response. It looks like a dialog -- he said, she
said.

The beauty of this method is that even if you never read the original
message (say you just subscribed), the quoted portions provide enough
information that you know what the writer is responding to.

It's not just brilliant, it's intuitive. The reply comes after what you
are replying to.

As Mary noted on the iMac List:

A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation.
Q: Why is top posting frowned upon?

--> Top Posting

Over the past decade, as more and more users have come to use email, a
new style of reply emerged where the reply came first and was followed by
the original message. Often the entire original message. No selective
quoting. No removing unnecessary header lines or ads at the bottom. Bam,
everything.

Some people prefer top posting, some are very vocal in their support of
it, and some refuse to scroll through a message to read a bottom posted
reply. Really.

--> Our Research

Remember the issue of quoting the entire original message? Well it turns
out that almost everyone who does that is a top poster. They use the
default setting on their email client, they don't take the time to quote
selectively, and they fill digests with massive quantities of
unnecessarily quoted content.

--> Our Guidelines

Bottom posting is not only the oldest established method of replying on
the Internet, it is also the most logical. It demonstrates that the
sender is in a dialogue. It makes it easy for new subscribers to follow
the conversation. It's just logical.

Because of this, we recommend bottom posting as the normal way of
replying on our lists.

This should also eliminate most of the problems with excessive quoting.

However, we are not passing a hard and fast rule against top posting. I
use it myself when I send the following note to excessive quoters:

>This is a semi-automatic message from Dan, the listmom.
>
>Thanks for posting to the list.
>
>Please be careful not to quote *too much* of the original message (your
>recent posting is quoted below) when replying to the list -- especially
>the header and/or footer. (You're not being singled out; we send this to
>everyone who does that, and we realize that many email programs do this by
>default, so you may have to read the manual or help files to learn how to
>change this.)
>
>Thanks!

Of course, that's not the kind of discussion we see within a list. On a
list, top posting should be the exception, not the rule. Something like
"this is a bunch of bunk" or "the nanny declares this thread DEAD" are
appropriate as top posts; most replies are not.

Remember that this is a guideline. We won't kick you off the list for not
following it, but we believe bottom posting is the better way.

OS X Mail problem

2002-11-13 Thread Amber Rhea
Hi all,

Just recently I've begun experiencing a problem with Mail in OS X. I'm
running 10.1.5 on an iBook. Sometimes, after I receive new mail, when I
click on a new message to open it, I get the spinning beachball
cursor... forever! (I've let it go for several minutes.) Then I have to
force quit. Often when I re-open Mail after that, it is fine.

This seems to happen truly randomly. It's not *that* big of a deal to me
since it hasn't been a major inconvenience, but I don't like to force
quit too much for fear of doing damage (what type, I don't know, but I
just don't like it). Any thoughts?

Just wanted to report that I've installed my second 512MB ram card
from OWC and my Pismo is up and running fine with 1GB. Both have
PC133 stickers on them. Shipping was $1.50 more for Express than
ground, so I ordered Friday night, it shipped on Saturday (not
expected) and with the holiday was here on Tuesday.
My GNX 40MB drive is also, knock on wood, operating flawlessly.
I use this machine for daily office work, but also do a daily dose of
iMovie and iPhoto, and it's the master for my iPod, so the ram and
hard drive space are a big benefit.
Apple really got it right on this powerbook! A great package when
new, I can't express the ease of upgrade relative to my (now sold) PB
2400. Same when going from a Powermac 8500 to the G3 Blue & White.
Now I just need to schedule the down time for the G4 upgrade...
:-)
Best,
Joel

George
I have the same router and have used it with Comcast cable and Earthlink
DSL.
The key in my case was cloning the MAC address so that the router
identified itself as the same device that the cable modem (or DSL modem)
was originally hooked up with.
I had to upgrade the router firmware to 1.37.9b on my original
non-wireless Linksys router to enable MAC address cloning. I think the
wireless router came with the later firmware.
Open the configuration page for your router and look for an "advanced"
tab in the upper right corner. Once you've selected "advanced" you
should have a tab labeled "MAC Addr. clone" where you can type in the
MAC from your pismo.
For what it's worth I have nothing entered in "host name" or "domain
name" and I have "obtain an IP address automatically" selected.

Powerbook G3

2002-11-13 Thread Clyde Kahrl
Bob Johnson Wrote:
We are having a problem with my daughters Powerbook G3. Purchased
new on 6-25-99

I have the exact same thing you have--a Lombard with 192 meg
running Office 98. It originally came with OS 8.5 and you should at
least be running 8.6, but I presume you are running OS9.1. There is
no problem with speed and you don't need more RAM. HOWEVER, in my
experience, one must always use virtual memory with all Microsoft
products of that era. This has nothing to do with the amount of
RAM, it apparently has to do with the way Microsoft prefers the
virtual-memory memory-manager. So set the VM to 193 (or 250,
whatever).

HP is notorious for not updating their drivers. (the
consequences of this are worse in the Windows world), but check out
their web page anyway for drivers. I have found that everything
works much better in OS 9.1 than in 8.x, but I don't have your
printer. As noted by others, defragging an overloaded drive doesn't
help as much as dumping files, although if you are using the computer
primarily for Office '98, you shouldn't be even close to filling 5
out of 6 Gigs.

You might try printing pages wit, say, 1 letter in Times font
or forcing Black & White in the driver, to see if certain settings
are causing a problem, but only use brand-new documents from scratch.
Try setting the print driver to the fastest and coarsest setting.
(Question: Does the printer take 14 minutes to start printing? or
does it start immediately and go really slow from there?)

Try starting documents that are brand new. MSWord can create
haunted documents that mess up your system. These documents are the
suck-egg dogs of your computer and must be destroyed. If you are
using bad documents for templates this can make MSWord worthless.
(These documents may have one invisible character somewhere that is
causing the print driver to spend 14 minutes and 59 seconds to print
nothing and the last second to print your document.

The same is true of your MSWord preference files. You may
have haunted preferences and styles, etc. Even if you delete the
specific header, footer, template or preference that was causing the
problem the Haunting will refuse to die and in my experience the only
thing to do is delete everything related to MSWord (except your old
docs) and reconstruct them from scratch. This is based upon my
experience using Word for 16 years. I recall having to do this with
Word 98 on my Secretary's Cube within the last 2 years.

Re: Virtual RAM problem in Pismo under Jaguar

Jim, from previous discussions on this list, I believe that Jaguar (and
all other versions of MacOS X) always uses virtual memory (i.e., you
cannot turn it off). You might be able to change how much memory in 9 is
allocated, but you won't be able to turn off the virtual memory that
Jaguar is using.

HTH,

Jim R.

Re: help! with router

2002-11-13 Thread Jay Snyder
I setup a Linksys router for my neighbor with a cable modem, and the problem
was the caching of the MAC address in the cable modem. You need to power up
the router before your cable modem -- if the modem can't contact the
"computer" or in this case the router on powerup, it uses the MAC address
from the last time it was powered up.This MAC address mis-match might be
what is causing your problem.

Re: help! with router

2002-11-13 Thread Jay Snyder
You may need to set up the "Hostname" in the router to be a specific name.
I set one of these up for a friend with Comcast (used to be @HOME), and we
had a little trouble with it until we set that up.I think the Linksys
tech support people where the ones that finally helpped with that. Call
them, they're very helpful.

Overheating Pismo DVD-ROM module

2002-11-13 Thread JW Travis
My recently acquired Pismo 400 can't play a music CD more than about 20-30
min. without serious dropout of the audio with concurrent noisy
"head-seeking behavior" (it sounds like its completely confused as to where
the tracks are). Eventually it stops spinning, then restarts repeatedly.
After removing the module and letting it cool, it works fine for another
20-30 min.

Is this a known issue?

The fan came on yesterday for the first time (a scorcher here in Australia)
for a short while, so it works, but doubt it cools that side much.

thanks,

Jack in Victoria

This is good advice! I had the same problem, had me stumped for
hours. The I read the FM and did this. Bing! All working.

But you must unplug from mains power, not justt switch off. Doing a
hard reset won't hurt either (usually a little hole on the back -
poke it with a paper clip).
