bridging/extending airport networks

2003-07-26 Thread Hal
Anyone know a good/easy way to extend airport networks (not extreme) by
using base stations as repeaters? I've heard that this is a standard
feature in airport extreme, but I have the older model. I'm trying to
extend my coverage to my whole house and my one graphite base station
is coming up short. Besides, I need coverage in my backyard as well.
:-)

Any help is appreciated.

Buying a wifi bridge will extend your range. You should be able to pick
one up at like Best Buy. You should be able to configure it through
your web browser.

Wallstreet screen dark after wake from sleep fix

2003-07-26 Thread Clark Martin
I know this is a common problem but I don't know if this fix is well
known. My Wallstreet (OS 10.2.6) started not lighting the screen
after waking from sleep and restart. After looking around I found a
suggestion of booting into OS 9, sleeping it, waking it and switching
back to OS X. I tried this and it worked.

It started having problems after the battery popped loose when it was asleep.

I had some problems setting the start up disk in OS 9 but I think
that was another problem (I ended up having to update the disk driver
and run DFA on the boot disk).

Anyways I figured I'd post this as from my reading the problem is
common but I didn't find the solution until after a lot of digging.

Re: iBook 700 and date time error on start-up

2003-07-26 Thread James Rohde
On 07/25/2003, Richard Smykla apparently wrote:

Michael,

Sounds like your PRAM battery needs replacing.

Hi,
Our iBook 700 running 9.2.2 has developed the strangest error. On
restart/boot, it gives a date time error message at finder launch that
says the time zone is invalid. It also turns off Appletalk.

Anyone heard of this before or know of a fix? I've searched but not found
anything.
Thanks!
Michael
However, I have had that problem without the PRAM battery needing
replacement. In my case, I had St. Louis listed as a city in my time
zone, which was one of the choices given in the Date and Time control
panel. This after a while, led to the Time zone is invalid message
(possibly connected to the Location Manager, since the error messages
began after I added some locations in it). After I changed the city in
Date Time to Chicago, it went away. I think after I had (for other
reasons) to re-install my system, I was able to select the St. Louis in
DTime again without getting the error message.

I found it puzzling that one selection from Apple's choices in Date
Time gave me the error messages (for any period of time), but another
selection in that same list would not.

HTH,

Jim Rohde

Not sure about the PLW LS one, but for the Epson 740, just plug it in.
10.2.6 will do the rest.

You won't be able to use your PLW LS, because it's not a Postscript printer
and Apple hasn't released any driver for non-Postscript printers in OS X.

There are drivers for plenty of non-PostScript printers. All inkjets, as far as I
know, don't have PostScript. Jaguar includes CUPS, Common UNIX Printing System, and it
has the capability to generate a raw bitmap that with the proper filters, will drive
various bitmap printers.

How does your Personal LaserWriter LS connect? Is it SCSI, LocalTalk, Serial or what?

It shouldn't be too hard to write a CUPS driver for it, but there's no money in it. It
could probably be done in a few weeks, but why for such an old printer?

Wallstreet Woes

2003-07-26 Thread LINUXorred
Hello All,
I have a Powerbook Wallstreet 266 that had a bad power board connector (small board
with audio and power connectors on it.) I attempted to resolder the power board
connector with one pulled from a Duo 230...worked worse than i had expected. The
board smoked.
So after bidding around on eBay, i got a new one, installed it, and i could power the
wallstreet, but ANOTHER problem had arisen. The connector seemed to have a bad
contact somewhere, the powerbook would shut off when moved ever so slightly on my
desk. I figured something must be mis-seated, so i took the Wallstreet apart, and
reseated everything, uncluding the processor. Now the Wallstreet does nothing.
I'm stumped...any help would be greatly appreciated.
Much Thanks in advance.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? Resetting the Wallstreet itself? I can't
imagine that you can't boot in 9. Have you been able before to boot from the
same OS 9 install CD you're trying? Maybe something is corrupted in your OS
9 partition, on your hard drive, so that might explain why it does the
little flashing after starting. But you should be able to boot from an OS 9
