An OS 9.2 question

2003-09-05 Thread MarJo

I just had to do a clean install because of some
strange Alerts, probably due to damaged files.

I'm replacing and re-installing now. Does anyone know
the name of the file which holds the Favorites for
Internet Explorer? I haven't been able to locate it
in Preferences or Extensions.

That's a big loss in time and trouble. Would
appeciate any help you can give me. Thanks.
MarJo

Lombard keyboard replacement?

2003-09-05 Thread Zen
The keyboard of the Blue Lombard (terrible story, bored at 3 AM with blue
sign tape and Powerbook) has died. I am currently searching for a
replacement. Is anyone aware if a keyboard from any other powerbook or ibook
will fit? I know the Pismo's are out.

Could buy a new one, but I am cheap.

TIA

Best

Any other considderation ?

Any ideas of whether or not the new 15 will be able to boot

I suppose one good thing about an external Bluetooth adapter
is that I can use it with my MDD 2x1GHz, though quite why

2003-09-05 Thread Wayne
Concerning the boot into OS9 issue, I believe that all new Macs starting
with the last G4 Towers, 800 900 ibooks, and the current Powerbooks will
not allow booting into OS9.

I seem to remember seeing this issue awhile back, can anyone verify this for
Laurence (and for me, as I also need to boot into OS9 on occasion until all
the software is upgraded to native X).

Wayne

PS: The 12 is made out of a magnesium alloy, not has exciting as Titanium
but it is said that it does not show scratches as much as the Titanium does
while being about the same light weight and strength.

Re: PowerBook G4 Titanium/Aluminium ??

2003-09-05 Thread Michelle Klein-Hass
On Friday 05 September 2003 04:19 am, Nick wrote:
No new Macs will boot into 9.

This is one of the main reasons why I am still a fan of the black case G3s.
I have a Wallstreet PDQ, but the Lombard and (better yet) Pismo are also
great machines. If you absolutely have to have a G4 get a TiBook...those are
going to start getting cheaper. In addition, with a TiBook or a black G3 you
get PCMCIA card slots. Apple seems to have phased them out in favor of
relying on USB and FireWire periphs, but there is nothing like a PCMCIA
Compact Flash adaptor, for example, to help you get your pictures off your
digital camera. Transfer times are way better for PCMCIA than for either USB
or (gag!) serial port. It works almost as fast as a hard drive to hard drive
transfer, which is not surprising considering that CF is an IDE device just
like your hard drive. With the TiBook, also, there is the problem of the
titanium case interfering with the AirPort antenna. Put a Cardbus 802.11b or
802.11g card in the PCMCIA slot and you are good to go. Especially if you
also have a card which allows hookup of an external antenna.

Any black case G3 will still boot MacOS 9 just fine. If my memory serves me
right, the same case exists with the TiBook. However, the Ti is a bit
fragile, and requires a lot of TLC to keep going right. The black G3s are a
bit more sturdy, although the classic hinge problem is a bugaboo with all
of them, as is the auto-eject mechanism on the Wallstreet. shiver

BTW WallyNavi, my Wallstreet PDQ, is very happy with Yellow Dog Linux. YDL is
kind of fiddly to install, although my friends in Santa Barbara Linux User
Group (yes I live in LA but I am a member of SBLUG because they are just a
lot nicer and a lot more helpful than the membership of San Fernando Valley
LUG and Simi-Conejo LUG have been) assure me that it was a lot more fiddly in
the beginning. You basically have to put several Linux kernels into your
System Folder and install a control panel/extension/app combo (BootX) to turn
your MacOS 9 install into a dual-boot MacOS 9/Linux install. Once you get to
New World Macs it's a lot easier to install...Open Firmware doesn't care what
your OS is, just so long that it is bootable. The Lombard on up are New World
Macs so everything's cool.

I have even had great success with OpenOffice.Org, the Free/Open Source office
suite that gives MS Office a serious run for its money and writes valid MS
Office 97/98/2000/2001/XP/X files...and it's GRATIS too, folks! After using
it for a whole year or so on Linux on x86 machines it's great to have it run
on a Mac. OO.Org does have a MacOS X version, but it doesn't run under
Quartz...you have to install the Apple X11 Services to have it work there.
Under Linux and under Windows (yes! It does Windows) it basically Just Works
(tm).

Once you add Linux to a Mac that is just not cut out for MacOS X, you have a
UNIX-like operating system of your own that is stable, crash-resistant, multi
threaded, has preemptive multi-tasking and all the other goodies that make
MacOS X such a joy to work with. You also get about 98% of the apps that
people running Linux on x86 machines do...the other 2% of the apps that don't
recompile for Linux are the same that don't recompile for MacOS X. Those
usually have x86-dependent code or don't survive the endianness flip
gracefully. To explain endianness there is a great entry at
http://www.everything2.com/ . Unfortunately I can't figure out a way to give
you a direct link. This means that in this period when people are moving away
from creating programs that will run under MacOS 9 and below and basically
moving their Mac software to only support X, the main way that X-challenged
Macs can remain useful is to dual boot a PPC Linux distro.

Yellow Dog is not the only PPC Linux distro...there is Mandrake 9.1 PPC now,
which I haven't tried, and there is Debian PPC and even Debian 68K which are
the best options for those Macs a bit too old to run Yellow Dog. On the 68K
end there is also NetBSD which is a great thing for any old 68K machine with
a PMMU and a FPU. In all cases of Old World Macs, you have to have a
Classic MacOS boot partition and run BootX as a loader. You can't get around
that. Once you get around the fiddlyness of installing Linux using BootX to
load the installation kernel everything else is fairly easy.

WallyNavi is still up in Santa Barbara because it's getting some tuning and
some attention from my Linux guru friends. But I look forward to having it
back down again and showing the x86 snobs at SFVLUG (they aren't all that
way...one of the leaders even has an iBook now) how evil 'leet my Black G3
PowerBook of Doom is. Anyone for a Wardrive? ^_^

PIM recommendations for OS X and 9.2?

I need a personal information manager that runs on both OS 9.2 and X (my old

integrates with templates for producing letters, envelopes, faxes, also a
calendar. I don't need activity tracking and forecasting, but it's okay if
in the package.

Recommendations, please?

Besides the lousy WiFi antenna, my other tiBook gripe is that the

left edge of the computer when I type, and this has worn the paint off
the frame. When come back from running and sit down at the kitchen

Well, I don't know if all the features are there, but there is always
Palm Desktop. It's a free download from Palm.com and doesn't actually
require a Palm device to use it. Calendar, notes, contacts.

There is also Now Contact/Up to Date (http://www.nowsoftware.com/).

I've had this problem with every PowerBook I've ever owned. With my

housing, where the internal RF shield paint comes close to the outside
world. And I often get it off the trackpad too. I hate trackpads; I
wish Apple would use the rubber-nub type controller. That's one of the
big downsides of the Apple single-source world - everybody is forced to
live with one guy's cosmetic and ergonomic preferences.

Re: Lombard cache failure symptoms?

2003-09-05 Thread Andrew King
I have a Lombard 400 and have been following the thread on Lombard cache
failures.
I checked the URL http://www.pbzone.com/archive/1002_1thru7.shtml
but still have 2 questions:

Does the failure always produce the message that reads The built-in memory
test has detected a problem with cache memory?
What percentage of Lombards has had this problem to date (is it a case
of if or when?).

To each his own.
Precisely my point :)

I love the smoothness of the trackpads and the ability to double
click by tapping on them.
Modern nubs also support tap, double-tap, and tap-n-drag. Only the
first generation of nubs didn't (much like the first generation of
trackpads, e.g. on the PowerBook 500 series).

Can't stand those silly doinkers (a.k.a. nubs).
My two major tasks are CAD and typing (not counting general activities
like playing emulated games and Web surfing). For CAD, a trackpad is a
PITA. The pointer skitters around when trying to make accurate
movements. I also hate the way it feels on my fingertip. For typing, a
nub keeps my fingers on the home keys where they belong.

With the tiBook normal typing results in the wrist touching the bare
edge of the computer. I don't feel the shock from the ti sheet metal,
apparently the anodization is a sufficient insulator.

And I often get it off the trackpad too.
I've never been shocked from the trackpad, but then I'm almost always
using a mouse.

iBook DVD error message

2003-09-05 Thread Stella
I am the new owner of a used iBook Graphite SE Firewire. When I try
to play a DVD, I get an error message which begins Apple DVD player
does not support the video card... and then goes on to say something
about reducing my monitor's resolution. This last bit is followed by
the number 307.

Although I spent the last hours searching through Apple Support for
help, I couldn't seem to find anything.

Does anyone on this list have any ideas?

Thanks,

my other tiBook gripe is that the painted metal frame scratches.
Just take a look at some of the mods on www.applefritter.com
and it won't bother you!!
So maybe I should tear down my tiBook, chemically strip the outer
frame, and have it powder painted.

TiBooks in the US come with Mac OS 9. But you might have to install it
via the Software Restore CD, and it may not come pre-installed on the
TiBook you tried.

NO. NO. NO. You must WAIT for the 15 AlBook with Humbrol enamel kit and
functional WiFi antenna brush applicator.
