I have not had to make any hinge repair for my Ti867 but I have

A guy in Iceland posted some pics of his repair at < www.photo.is>.

I don't know if these are still available or if they are useful. If you

Yes, you could get an ORiNOCO Silver or Gold card, which are basically the
same than Apple own AirPort card. On OS 9, you only have to install the
AirPort software and your card will be recognized as a genuine AirPort card.
On OS X, you need to use 3rd party drivers.
-Laurent.
I concur. The ORiNOCO Silver/Gold are good cards. I use them exclusively.

FWIW, though, IOXperts make drivers that will work with just about
any Wi-Fi card out there. The drivers are pretty cheap (~$20, so if
you find a really cheap PC card...). They make drivers for OS 9 and
OS X. You'll need two seperate licenses (one per operating system),
if you run both OSs.

As Laurent already mentioned, the ORiNOCO cards (WaveLAN chipset) are
recognized by AirPort 1.x and 2.x as AirPort PC cards. OS X (and
AirPort 3.x) do NOT recognize these cards, so you'll need drivers for
OS X.

FWIW, the Apple AirPort card is a rebadged WaveLAN Silver...

(Dan K - I still haven't played around with my AirPort card in my PC
Card slot or WaveLAN card in my AirPort slot - I'll let you know if
anything funny happens when I do.)

Peace,
Drew

Problem with 12'' PB not detecting external Display.

2003-09-28 Thread Guillaume Potard
I have a problem , which apparently is due to a bug of OS X or the Powerbook
12'' Hardware due to the number of people having the same problem :
Here is the problem:

I cannot swtich the external video to PAL anymore (using the composite and
S-video adapter). That is, in the Display control pannel I can only select
modes that are 60 Hz..
However, connecting a monitor using the VGA adapter works fine.

The video output used to work fine for a short while after I got my
powerbook but then it suddenly stopped ... only NTSC after that :)

This is what I tried with no success:

-Upgrade to OSX 10.2.6
-Fresh new adapter
-Different Data projectors and VCRs (it always shows the external device
as 'Display' no matter what is connected)
-Resetting the firmware

I think it's a matter of not detecting the display properly really
annoying as the primary use of my powerbook is video stuff
Apple wanted something really flash.. .but just made something too
complicated and buggy

Is there anybody out there that has this problem ? And has a solution /
advice . This is a major flaw of the Powerbook 12'' !!

Thanks

Guillaume

My gigE 550 does the same thing for 2 years. Ti-books are using the

Re: Installing new Tibook Hinges

2003-09-28 Thread Ron van Veen
Pretty tricky operation.
I replaced a hinge by peeling the side of the screen open (just the
border) and took out the broken pieces. screwed a new hinge in and
knocked carefully the peeled border back. It is a little-bit bubbled
now, but works great. Use a heavy glue to keep the frame together and
you've just saved a lot of money.
Good luck.

2003-09-28 Thread Geoff Doctor
On my powerbook gigE 667, I noticed that my fan comes on quite a bit,

The part located there is the motherboard and inverter, and I was
having some backlighting issues. Do you think the inverter is the
culprit?

The top cover can easily be replaced, Powerbookguy.com sells the top

Other than the 2 cracks, I'd rate it an 8 out of 10. It has some wear

Re: Installing new Tibook Hinges

2003-09-28 Thread Jim Katz
A general comment on Ti-Book hinges. I had a green vertical line problem on
my Ti-400 that got replaced under Applecare by replacing the whole display.
It needed two tries to get it right, and then the lid was very tight and
hard to close. a couple of weeks later one hinge had cracked through and I
headed back for repair again. It is still tighter than when new, and I
expect will fail again. I suspect it is really difficult to get these
hinges aligned and great precision is needed in the installation - don't
just screw it on and expect it to fly forever. (I tried opening and closing
three new ones at a store and only one was smooth and easy even right out of
the box.)

Help w/connecting ipod

2003-09-28 Thread ifab
Lombard 333mhz, running os 9.2.2. Trying to get my ipod to connect
through a pcmcia firewire port. Have tried two different cards; one off
ebay- generic and one is a belkin card. Both have showed up on the
desktop but don't see the ipod as being connected. The ipod is in disk
mode so doesn't need a powered bus card. I tried my externally powered
cdrw and that was not detected through the cards either. All the right
extensions are there for firewire support. Do I just need another brand
of card? The cardbus is working as it does see my wireless wavelan card.
 I'm really stumped.

Could mean your On board ram took a dump,
Try installing a known good 64-128 SODIMM, (be sure to remove the

about 30 minuntes with no battery and not plugged it before installing

Morning, all. I've had my 12" G4 PB for about a month, now. I'm very
happy with it, even though my battery life has become questionable with
the 10.2.8 update...

I've noticed that, when running on battery, it seems the sound
subsystem gets turned off, but wakes up when a sound event gets played.
For example, just now, after not having any sounds played for a while,
I went to iTerm and hit ^G to cause an alert to trigger. I heard a bit
of disk activity, a slight pop from the speakers, and finally the alert
sound. It took about 2-3 seconds for the alert to finally sound. If I
trigger another alert soon after, it'll play again with no delay. If I
wait a minute or two, the delay will happen again.

Is this an energy-saving "feature"? It doesn't seem to happen when
running off the AC adapter...

Thanks,
B

I know what you mean. I've been looking for some info on replacing the hinge
on a TiBook G4/550. Can anyone point me in the right direction for DIY
repairs? I know some companies do the job for a lot less than Apple, but
said prices are still in the $500 range, plus shipping (I'm in Europe).

I came across a G4/550 with combo drive at a good price, though it has a
busted right hinge (the guy uses it with an external monitor and it works
fine). I also see right (and left) hinges selling on ebay in the $100 range.
If I could do the repair job myself it'd be a great deal; there'd be no
advantage in getting a company to do the repair job at $400-500.

I do have some experience in piecing broken powerbooks into good working
Macs, including 1400s, 3400s and Pismos. I've also done screen replacements
on these. Though obviously the TiBook screen is in a whole different league.
I have the Gigabit Ethernet takeapart manual and I can see that the job is
not for the faint of heart.

If anyone wants to advise for or against, please let me know. And if anyone
has any info on replacing the hinge yourself, any and all info would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Chris

It was only my account hiccupping...(sheepish smile) and I fired off the
wrong email confirming I still want to be on the list

Any girl knows a little super or nail glue will put that fingernail right

That did make me chuckle...

It's been a couple of years, but as I recall, I just pried up with a
fingernail and it popped off.

Re: Wallstreet keyboard (continued)

From: Tom Ethen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I don't understand why it isn't feasible as both the PowerBook Medic and
the
ebay seller I posted could send the keys through the mail. The last time I
sent a letter with a CD inside to a friend of mine in Denmark it cost less
than $5, so why can't you have them send the keys to you in Sweden?
Ok, wrong choice of word, economical.

I live and travel into Stockholm, where most Macs reside here,
and therefore if I find someone with a dead keyboard it'll cost
me the equivallent of cents.
Also, the keys on an American keyboard is different to the keys
on a Swedish keyboard. It's not not an A, B or C key I'm after...
