Re: PISMO CAN'T FIND SYSTEM
Drew. I got the machine running again. The case was that I thougt that the arrow up key was the option key. After being puzzled for a long time the switch went on. That made a big difference. And the sound didn't sound because the soundlevel was at 0. Thank you so much. You are my hero! What a knowledge. Now i have to find out how to show my old firewire HD on the desktop. Do i have to use jumpers? - Original Message - From: Andrew Kershaw [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: G-Books [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 1:17 AM Subject: Re: PISMO CAN'T FIND SYSTEM Thank you Drew. I tried all your hints but Pismo doesn't make a start up sound. It goes straight to a grey screen with a small folder in the middle wich switches to a system icon and a question mark. What to do? That's strange. Some Macs when muted don't sound the startup chime... Don't know if that's the case with the Pismo or not... Try this: As soon as you hit the power button, hold down Apple-Option-O-F to boot into OpenFirmware. You should get a white-ish/grey screen with a text interface (it will look a bit like DOS does). Type reset-all return at the prompt. You Mac should reboot after you hit the return key. Then try holding down Apple-option-p-r to reset the PRAM... If after doing all this booting from a CD still doesn't work (by holding the c key at startup), then who knows... Failing all that, I'd check all the connections again - make sure to check that the keyboard is plugged in correctly, that all the RAM is seated correctly, and that both ends of the hard drive cable are firmly seated. You might even try using an external keyboard, just to be on the safe side. I'm also rather surprised that the PRAM reset didn't sound the startup chime the second time. Not that I doubt you, but are you sure you pressed all four buttons at the same time and that you pressed them immediately after (or even during) the startup chime (or right after pushing down the power button), then held them down until the screen lit up, went dark, PowerBook restarted, and repeated once or twice? The fact that you didn't hear a startup chime sounds odd - a PRAM reset done correctly _always_ sounds the startup chime on the re-boot. If that still doesn't work, then I'm stumped. Sudo, followed by a command, will prompt you for your password. Once you successfully enter your password, that command will be run as the root (or another) user on the system. By default under OS X, the root user, and anyone with admin privileges (ie the user you created during your OS X install) will have the ability to run any command as root via sudo. This access is controlled by a file called /etc/sudoers, and can be edited with the visudo command. That file, and the command to edit it can be accessed only at the command line. Sudo is nice in that you can give someone rights to only run a single command or shell script as root, even if they are not a root or admin equivalent. Typing man sudo at the command prompt will give you a ton of information on the sudo command and all it's permutations. Hope this helps... Install OS 9 on G4 867?
I recently purchased a G4 867 to replace my workhorse PB 3400. One of the selling points for my boss was the ability to retain my ton of legacy SCSI devices like scanners, especially my old Color OneScanner, which is perfect to carry on the road. I was expecting to be able to boot my new G4 into OS 9, but when I select start up disk there's no OS 9 folder. The system does run Classic Environment, but will not boot to OS 9. So, is it possible to install OS 9 on this new PowerBook? I have a copy of the OX 9.1 disk that came with my OS X install disks when I upgraded all the office desktops. Also have the PowerBook restore disks, but that doesn't seem to have OS 9 on them, unless I just looked in the wrong place. All suggestions gladly received - thanks! Re: is my powerbook dead?
While it eliminates your hard drive it does not eliminate other possibilities such as a loose connection or perhaps a cracked circuit board. It's my understanding that Apple has a flat charge for repairing Powerbooks. If you are not comfortable doing a teardown rebuild yourself, it may pay for you to take it to them for repair. I have heard that the newest tower G4s cannot boot into OS 9 because the firmware prevents it. You can run in Classic mode but that's all. -tom -- From: Ken Strayhorn Subject: Install OS 9 on G4 867? Re: is my powerbook dead?
Thanks Seeing as I need this laptop for work / school (I use it from 8AM until I go to sleep) I can't afford to be without it for any period of time. Today I rode up to the apple store in soho, plunked down my credit card, and walked out with a new 15 AlBook. The machine is amazing. Once I've migrated everything off the old TiBook, I'm going to run it as an MP3 serverthat is after I tear it apart to find out what the problem was. Thanks for the helpIt would have been nice to have been spared the expense of the new laptop, but oh well Brendan On Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at 08:55 AM, Joe Ellis wrote: While it eliminates your hard drive it does not eliminate other possibilities such as a loose connection or perhaps a cracked circuit board.
