Re: Is an external Hard Drive a good solution?

2003-12-18 Thread Gary Adams
Well, I just put a 60gb Travelstar in my Pismo for that reason--except
I just carry mine to work, but I have a couple of external firewire
drives that I use for backing up stuff. They are the leftovers from
previous upgrades, installed in 2.5" combo drive cases. It's very handy
when I want to move data to my clamshell iBook, too. I have no
experience with PocketDrives. A guy had some for sale on the iBook list
earlier in the month, though. He said they were very reliable (of
course), but that he needed more space.

Yes your correct, the most difficult part seems to be removing the
clutch cover. This is covered in the inverter board take apart
section. The manual says, after removal of appropriate parts to lift
up until you can disengage the hooks at the back. Hmm sounds a little
delicate. This is where I would get a bead of sweat on my forehead.
I like the paper clip route. So how far do you lift up on the
cover before you slide the paper clip in to disengage the clips. Do
you go high enough to where you can see these clips or just go by
feel. In the manual the photo implies I could lift this cover to
about 45 degrees and this should disengage the clips. I think this
might be a little dangerous on plastic.
Thanks for the help
Geoff
I don't lift up at all, I tug the cover towards the front (trackpad) of
the machine. The paper clip fits under the cover when the processor
heatsink is removed. Then, it's a rather firm yank required. You'll
feel them disengage, and then you can tilt it up the 45 degrees and
lift it out. After the clips are loose, the cover will still be held in
by the screen housing but that's very little pressure.
If you could lift the cover as far as your manual says, the clips would
already be disengaged!
And if you bust it let me know, I think I have a spare.

Since the two drives are identical, if you have the time and skill set, I
would suggest that you swap the two drives between the two systems to see if
the problem follows the drive or remains with the machine.

Good luck,

Howdy:

Different drives of the same rpm definitely have different
characteristics and some work better under certain circumstances than
others. They have different cache sizes and the electronics make each
brand and model drive different. However, not all is as it seems. I
know that there were some either Toshiba or Fujitsu drives that were
the same speed as the Hitachi/IBM drives yet had an 8MB cache versus
the 2 or 4MB cache in the Hitachi/IBM drive... yet on xlr8yourmac the
Hitachi/IBM drive consistently outperformed the other drive (not sure
now what the other drive brand was). I have had good luck and
performance (quiet, fast, reliable, cost effective) out of IBM drives
so I have stuck with them. I'd recommend checking out xlr8yourmac.com
for reviews and benchmarks so you can make an informed decision. There
may be other relevant resources, this is one I've used that I trust.

if nothing else is stated, "Digital Video" means the DV format or better
IMHO. And even if not, many may assume you can do any kind of video on a
wallstreet if statements on video on wallstreet are heard like in this

find ways together to do video on a WS, the inherent limitations
shouldn't be pretended to not exist. Hence my friendly objection.

I wrote FCP, not FCP 4. I'd say FCP 3 could work but I wouldn't count on
it working with less than a 300 mhz WS. I'm not sure how OS X woudl tip
the demands, but I think it will a little bit better due to better HD
handling. At least this is my experienc with Audio. CPU intense actions
could probably need an additional 50 mhz under OS X. But these are just
speculations, mind you.

Dead Pismo

2003-12-18 Thread Joe

I have a dead pismo, and it shows no signs of life no matter what I try or what I
reseat, is there a way to test the sound/power card to see if it is functional before
plunking down $100ish for a new one? Does anyone know if a dead cpu would make the
computer be dead? The pismo does have a crack in the case that would be on the belly
side of the mouse button if it were facing you in your lap, I took it ALL the way
apart and checked for things that would look broken or burned or whatever, foudn
nothing. If I can't get a simple solution to this the guy trying to sell it to me for
$125 will most likely give it to me for free, and I could repair it with parts from
ebay. I have a lombard, would it be possible to swap the sound/power card out of that
and into the pismo without killing anything? My lombard works fine except for a
vertical white line of pixels that I'm trying to fix as well, but that is not as
important as getting this pismo running. As I can use my lombard with the pixel
issue, it s a little harder to use a dead pismo ;-)
