Upgrading.

2004-01-24 Thread invicta
Hello All,

I'm a new subscriber, living in the Netherlands and using Mac's since
'89 but never owned a laptop. To clarify my alias in my e-mail address,
I'm also a fervent fly fisher and Invicta is a well-known wetfly.

My present home-system is ADSL ethernet modem Vigor 2200E router
and one Flatpanel 800 Mhz iMac, 1 GB SDRam, running OS X v. 10.3. My
wife has an 400 Mhz SE iMac connected to the same router aswell as a
spritly SE/30 with OS 7.5 and 128 MB, to play with.

We decided to acquire an iSight to communicate with my son in Needham,
USA who has a G 4 iBook, 14, 933 Mhz, 640 SO-DIMM also running OS X v.
10.3.

As the 400 Mhz iMac is too slow for iSight I decided to give my
Flatpanel iMac to my wife and get a 17 Powerbook for myself. To make
the powerbook free from cables I intend to install an Airport base
station without modem connected to one free portal of my router. The
laptop can than be moved around in the house and in the garden aswell,
weather permitting.

Would this setup have your approval or have I forgotten some or more
things?

Thank you for your help, greetings, Andre.

Re: G5 Laptops on the way???

2004-01-24 Thread Krevnik
Should be possible now... although in a different form factor of sorts.
The largest battery shipped with an Apple Laptop since the Kanga G3
seems to actually be the Lombard/Pismo shipping with 4800mAh batteries
(and you can get up to 6600mAh from 3rd party batteries), and recently
the 17 Powerbooks with 5400mAh batteries. The G4 12/15 are at
4400mAh... so it is possible to get batteries that compare with the
increased power usage, but they will cost a fair amount more,
increasing the cost of a G5 Powerbook for the end user.

The 970FX, meanwhile, consumes a mere 12.3W at 1.4GHz, paving the way
for PowerBook G5s. That figure is comparable to the 7.5W a 1GHz
consumption of the G4-class Motorola MPC7447 that drives the current
PowerBook G4s.

Re: Ram upgrade enquiry on the Pismo

2004-01-24 Thread John Collins
Geoff-- An excellent response. I recently followed other listers
suggestions and did the upgrade to 2 - 512s and all went well (I
currently have the Viking 256 on eBay) but I have another question.

My Pismo was an upgraded Daystar version to G4/550 and I went back to
them for the purchase since I had had good service before (as you say
where you buy is important) and since this was new to me I wanted some
assistance if needed. I do think I paid a little too much from
them--OWC would probably have been better.

The question-- they recommended that I buy pc133-- they said it would
be a little faster??? Any comments about this. Interestingly they also
recommended Viking or Edge, but when I got their sticks for a premium
price--they had no indication of manufacturer. I think I was taken
in--but the Pismo works great.

Howdy!

According to the manual the max limit is 512mb but I've heard that
some of you out there have increased this to 1Gb. If so, which chips
did you use and did you have any problems arising as a result of
this, and what were they?

TThe chip you need is the 512 meg, 144 pin PC 100 32x64 CL 2 SD RAM T
The performance from adding 1- 512 with your 128 will be noticeable.
The prices seem to be edging up a little, if you can swing 2- 512s I
would go for it. There are other places for RAM OWC comes to mind,
maybe small dog computer. These are stable folks who will stand behind
the ram. You can also check Ramseeker.com to compare prices. Remember
lower is not always better. I have read more problems related to poor
ram cause problems with 10.2 and now 10.3 so while a stick of ram is
a stick of ram, who you buy it from is important if you get a bad
stick.

If I upgraded to 512mb should I buy 2x256mb chips or 1x512mb? Does
it make any difference performance wise?.
Again if all you swing at this time is 1- 512 go that way, you will
see a real difference and keep you 128 stick. If you put in 2X256,
your throwing out your 128 stick so to upgrade to 1 GIG you will have
to sell both 2X256 and the 128.Maxing it out will make it useful
for longer period of time. Each new program seems to eat ram just
because its there, they should be writing better programs instead of
pigging out on ram..

I would put the max in I could afford. The amount of RAM you have is
what you have, but you will be able to open more programs faster with
more ram. With 2-512s your virtual memory will be turned off and the
book will really zing.

The next step would be to upgrade the hard drive to a bigger and
faster speed.. The good news you could sell your old one or put it a
fire wire box $50.00 bucks OWC and use it for backups

Finally if anyone has some spare pc100 chips they no longer require
please drop me a line!
Wish I could help you

Geoff

That is exactly the set-up I use, only your machines
are newer. My son, daughter, and I use G4-ed PM 7500s
and a G3-ed Performa connected to the internet via
DSLmodemrouter and just installed an airport (an
older one, naturally ;-) ) to link my son's Pismo and
my 1400 wirelessly to the proceedings.

It should be a simple matter. Connect the Airport via
ethernet to the router and (presuming you have an
airport card installed in you PBook) follow the
Airport Setup instructions. We had a bit of
difficulty only because we had selected to connect
via PPPoe to the router, and we needed to select
via Ethernet as the PPPoe protocol is apparently
taken care of by the router.

Once it's set up, and unless Apple has somehow changed
this, any laptop/wireless card combination that
complies with 802.11b standards should be able to use
it to connect.

David Thrower

Panther and Canon digital Rebel

2004-01-24 Thread dreeder
I am considering the purchase of the Canon digital Rebel or the 10D
(and possibly the Canon i9100 printer). Anybody on the list using the
camera or printer with either Panther or Jaguar? Is so what have been
your experiences? It looks like Canon primarily supports Windows - not
much mention of OS X. Thanks.

If what passes for tech support from Canon is any indication, I'd stay

I got a canned response that was not at all helpful (directing me to

I have used several Canon cameras including the Digital Rebel with my
Mac computers including Panther. The camera comes with software for the
Mac but really it is much easier to use a card reader and iPhoto or
similar program. By the way the Digital Rebel is a great camera. I
have the 18-55mm lens and 55-200mm lens.

On the PC 133 I am sticking my neck out here a bit because
you have the G4 550 upgrade, but I do not think you will get a speed
bump out of it. It may work in the Pismo just fine but I have never
seen it posted or read that PC 133 will give you more horsepower in
the stock Pismo then the PC100. jmo

Viking and Edge or both named brands and the sticks I have
seen the Viking sticker is on there. I have not come across and Edge

bit loose with the name.

However, you did buy all these upgrades from them, so the
real advantage is if anything goes wrong they can not come back and
say your no name brand ram messed up the G4 upgrade. So if you paid a
bit more, I think you bought yourself some insurance for that G 4
upgrade.

If you can go to the link below and give a report of how
things went with the G4 upgrade, it will help others make a choice.
Post the PC 133 question, and put the ram situation in there too, you
will get better answers then I can give and if indeed the ram was a
bait and switch these reports will help stop this practice, if indeed
it was a switcheroo on the ram.

Reasons they listed: 1. Cost to fix would be more than the value of the
lens. 2. They suspected abuse of equipment.

I was there when it fell apart. The photographer just put the thing on
the camera body, gave it the twist to lock it, and it fell in about
three pieces. Me and photog had and have a good relationship; asked him
if it had been dropped and told him I readlly didn't give a shoot one
way or another; he said no, and I had good reason to believe him.

So yeah, I'm ticked at Canon, too.
