Video Stream messeges?

2004-03-27 Thread invicta
Hello All,

I just heard that you can attach a video stream to an e-mail but only
in Windoze, not Mac's. Is this correct and why?

Greetings, Andre

Card DWL-G650+ Wireless

2004-03-27 Thread Hans M
Hi.

I have a PowerBook G4/400 and recently I invested in a wireless
router, Dlink-614+. It works great connected to an Ethernet cable.

I tried DLink wireless cards, installed software from the internet
but I haven't had any success at all establishing a wireless connection.
I tested the DWL-G650+ card, but I didn't succeed in getting any of
the green lights on it to go on.

I tried OWC, IOXperts80211.pkg and Install WirelessDriver.mpkg

Question:

Has anyone in this community succeeded in getting a Dlink-614+ card
to function on a Mac PowerBook?

I use MacOS X 10.3, Panther 10.3.3.

Thank you in advance for any useful info.

/Hans.

newbie laptop questions

2004-03-27 Thread Rad Craig
I just got my first mac laptop (wallstreet) and I have some questions.

1. It had OS X 10.2.6 on it when i got it and I want to upgrade to the
latest version. I did software update, but 10.2.8 is the highest it
seems to go, which is on it now. I have 10.3 on a CD, but it says it
can't be installed when i try to run it off the CD.

Will software update not allow it to go from 10.2.8 to 10.3?

I have XPostFacto (latest version, got it last night), but not sure I'm
using it right.

2. How does 'drag-lock' work for the trackpad?

3. Is there no way to be able to right-click with the trackpad?

Thanks

 Greetings, Andre

What do you mean exaclty by video stream? A video stream is usually a
server providing video over the network while the client plays it in real
time. Usually, that means providing the URL to the server's video stream.
So, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to provide a URL in an
email. If you mean being able to play the video from the email application
you're using, then you may be right. I only used Entourage so far and it
hasn't the ability to play video streams from an email. Maybe another email
application on the Mac would be able to do it. In any case, it's usually
just a matter of copying the URL to the video stream into your browser.

If by video stream you mean attaching the video file to the message, then,
again, I don't see why you would be able to do it from Windows but not from
the Mac. It would depend on the size of the file and whether your ISP limits
the size of emails you can send.

Officially, 10.3 requires built-in USB ports on the Macintosh you want to
install it on. Your Wallstreet doesn't have built-in USB ports. So, you'll
need to use XPostFacto, but I've never used it myself.

 2. How does 'drag-lock' work for the trackpad?

You double-click a moveable object (like a window title bar) and you hold
the second click down for a few seconds. Usually, that will lock the drag.
You tap the trackpad again to release.

 3. Is there no way to be able to right-click with the trackpad?

Hold down the Control key when clicking.

Re: Meritline External Enclosure Help-Question

2004-03-27 Thread Andrew Kershaw
You mean to re-initialize the entire hard drive just for one driver? Is it
not just possible to install the driver to OS 9 so that it can read this
external drive? I've never done the re-initialization and am a bit reticent
unless I can't find an easier, simpler way.
You shouldn't have to do that.

Disk drivers (in the hard disk drive sense) reside in a special
partition on the hard drive itself, not somewhere in your extensions
folder as would a CD-ROM drive's drivers. When you partition or
format a drive in OS 9, Drive Setup automatically writes the drivers
to the disk. If you do it in OS X, the drivers needed for OS 9 to
recognize the drive may not be written.

The solution is to re-initialize the disk making sure the OS 9
drivers get written. But you should be able to boot into OS 9, open
Drive Setup, and choose update drivers from the functions menu
without having to re-initialize the drive I think.

Peace,
Drew

iBooks vs. the World

2004-03-27 Thread illovox
I feel that all this talk of the iBooks and G3 units as useful only for
light this and that is nonsense. Only a few short years ago, G3 chips were
the top of the Mac food chain. At that time G2s were only for light so
and so. Fact is, G3s handle heavy work just fine. In some cases, the jobs
take a little longer...that's all. In some cases, a G3 will perform even
faster. A 900mhz G3 will perform all functions more swiftly than a 500mhz
G4, all other elements being equal. So, the real issues in choosing between
an iBook and a Powerbook are extended desktop use, professional connectivity
and presentation issues, required time to get jobs done, appearance and one
other caveat: The iBooks have been suffering from a hinge problem wherein
the hinge eventually cuts through the cable bundle that wires the screen to
the mainboard. Once cut through, expecially the power cable, it shorts the
entire system. That is what has been causing all the MoBo failures in the
iBook line. Apple won't admit it, despite their limited recall, and all the
discussion sites and boards are speculating about bad mainboards and so on,
but it's scissored cable junctions, hands down. As to if the new iBooks
have finally addressed this time will tell. But it is an expensive
mitigating factor and one I don't want to have to go through again.

Re: Dim Screen on a G3 Series II - fix or replace?

2004-03-27 Thread Paul Nicholson
It sounds like the cold-cathode (fluorescent lamp) or the lamp power
supply is out. You'll have to figure out how to open up the display
housing. Be careful, the voltage from the lamp driver can fry your
voltmeter. If you want to measure it, build a resistive attenuator out
of a 100 meg and 1 meg resistor.

The Power Adapter is the Yoyo type and the battery
charges well. Surfing via ADSL with OS 9.0.4 is very
quick using iCab.
I have taken apart powerbooks before and this one
looks easy (compared to a 3400c). What am I looking

If the 14.1 (I am reasonably sure it's not smaller)

I ran Norton and TechTools before buying the unit. I
have only the standard user manuals and the original

Re: iBooks vs. the World

2004-03-27 Thread Nick Marshall
Good point. Light this and that changes over time. I remember a heavy load
on my 7300/200 was 8 audio tracks with a compressor or eq per track. That
same load on my PB 667 is very light. Heavy now is ~24 tracks, compressor,
delay or eq on every track, a ton of edits and automation, and a real nice
reverb on the master fader. This might be a light load on a PB 1.25 or a
piece of cake on a dual g5 2Ghz.

That 7300 used to encode 64kbps mp3s at around 1-2x speed. My 667 does the
same job at 5-12x.

I could edit little 320x240 quicktim movies and a text effect would take
about 20sec to render. My 667 doing DV takes about 3sec.

As CPUs get more powerful, the load tends to move along with it.

Re: Dim Screen on a G3 Series II - fix or replace?

2004-03-27 Thread George Mogiljansky
Thanks, Paul.
The closest take-apart instructions with pictures I
found are here -
http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum3.html,
and for the display -
http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum9.html.

I followed them to the end, i.e. so no mention of the
cold cathode or power supply. What should the voltage
be (seeing as how the power is off; I am an amateur)?

My main concern is the cables so that if I get a
replacement screen, it will work 'out of the box'. So
far, I 'see' no damage with regards to cables. And
probably the screen is not expensive compared to the
cold cathode lamp and/or lamp power supply?
George

It sounds like the cold-cathode (fluorescent lamp)
 or the lamp power
supply is out. You'll have to figure out how to open
 up the display
housing. Be careful, the voltage from the lamp
 driver can fry your
voltmeter. If you want to measure it, build a
 resistive attenuator out
of a 100 meg and 1 meg resistor.

Re: Help to install panther in the lombard

2004-03-27 Thread John Kamimura
Some Lombards can't/won't install OS X due a problem with the CPU and/or memory. You
may want to check out the macfixit. com web site under the portable macs forum for the
threads on problems.

Some things to try from the threads
reseat the CPU and RAM
install OS X with only the original Apple RAM in the lower slot (nothing in upper slot)

The cash is 512 the memory is 128 top and 128 bottom i did try to
remove the top memory and still crash
lombard works fine using 9.2.2

how does it cash? what is your memory configuration? anything else not stock?

Re: Toast 6 DVD

2004-03-27 Thread Thomas Ethen
I am trying to burn a DVD with Toast 6 and it keeps telling me that I don't
have enough space on this disk and that I need 4.5 Gigs more, but I am
getting my files from a 120 Gig HD and the DVD is only an hour long.

How do I get it to read the 120 Gig external Firewire drive instead of
looking at the startup drive for free space?

Wireless woes with a Apple Airport card

2004-03-27 Thread DPrice
I am having the hardest time going wireless. I still need a little
help. I have installed the card in Pismo. It is recognized, and on
the menubar. it shows a signal, shows the base station id, etc, but I
can't connect. I am using a D-Link DI-514 router via cable modem. I
called the D-link support people and after half an hour of
suggestions they decided it was an OS X issue (10.2.3). Can any
resident wireless wizards out there help out this wireless
nincompoop? TIA!
