Re: ...WiFi why?.....

2004-05-20 Thread Timothy J. Luoma
Yes the advantage is that you can print to it w/o any other computer being
connected to the printer. That means that there does not need to be a
computer plugged in/turned on for the printer to work.

Many routers/cable modems have USB connectors but they are only for
network connection, not peripherals.

"a router that will let you print to a USB printer connected to the
router" I'm not sure if I am following this exactly.
First, my situation. I use a Belkin router that has wireless (b) and 4
ethernet ports. My daughter has an iMac with an Epson USB printer. My son
hooks up his PC via ethernet and I use my Pismo w/ an airport card. I can
easily print over the network to my daughters Epson from my Pismo. No
running back to her desk every time I need to use it. So yes, with a Belkin
(for $40 from Best Buy) I can print using this USB printer.
Second, my question. Is there an advantage to connecting the printer
directly to the router? (maybe no desktop at the router?) Or is my situation
what you meant. My router happens to have a USB port, but I thought it was
for the internet connection. I'm at work, so can't look at the manual until
I get home.

Thanks for any enlightenment,

Clamshell iBook-USB Storage Support Update

2004-05-20 Thread RK Rossi
I tried to upgrade my OS 9.1 USB Storage Support software to 1.3.5 on
the Apple site. Got it downloaded, read the requirements, says my
computer is compatible. However when actually try to install it I get a
message that it can't be installed on my computer.

I have to use OS 9.1 on this computer because I use a program which is
compatible with up to 9.1 only.

Thanks,

ibook disp/14/4 vram error

2004-05-20 Thread Ramon Garcia Icart
I have a 500Mhz dual usb ibook. When booting OS X it hangs just when the
blue screen appears. Hardware test shows a "disp/14/4" vram error.
I've reset the PMU, gone to OF and reset the nvram, etc...

Any ideas before replacing the motherboard?

Thanks,

Adding the ram will of course help, as will avoiding Windows XP. Windows
2000 runs well enough, and since you have 50% more speed than I do, it
should be better still.

I devoted 384MB of physical RAM to VPC and am satisfied with the results.

I was really disappointed to see that VPC 7 is being delayed until the 2nd

are even more frustrated.

At this point the only thing I really need to work under Windows is ACT!
and I would like to be able to view my web pages in IE for Windows w/o

I was wondering whether Win98 vs Win2000 vs WinXP would make a significant
difference. I'm on a PB 15"/1.5Ghz with 512mb ram perhaps this would
be a good time to add another 512mb?

Re: List mail bouncing message

2004-05-20 Thread Ned1
I've been getting a couple of bounced messages per day... but only from this list. I
think it's a problem with the list emailing software.

Additionally, if you're on AOL, it's almost impossible to actively participate on the
list. A standard reply to an email from the list will be rejected automatically since
it's not in plain text. Since there's no apparent way to send a plain text email
anymore, you have to go out to the internet via www.aol.com, sign in a second time, go
to mail, and then respond to emails. The internet flavor of AOL emails is plain text.

I think participation on this list would increase dramatically if the software was
enhanced to something current.

Just my opinion!

I put one of these into my Pismo. It's very quiet--quieter even than

Hi All, any thoughts, ideas, DIRECT EXPERIENCE with MS Virtual PC 6.1
and Panther 10.3.3 ? I am using a Pismo/400, 640MB RAM, lots of fast
HD, and Panther 10.3.3. PLEASE no rants about why, or M$, or the Dark

I use it running W98 on a TiBook 500 with 1GB RAM. It's a little slow,
but if you are only using it to accomplish a single function, then it
may be acceptable. I have one program that requires a PC so I can live
with it, but of course I'd like a faster PowerBook to help out. If you
have to do everything in VPC you might be disappointed in the speed
aspect. I recommend assigning as much real RAM to VPC as you
cansince you have 640 I'd say give VPC at least 256 or maybe even
320. BTW, using MSIE in the virtual machine is painfully slow, and
Mozilla and Firefox crashed it every time so I removed them.

Jim,
I have been using Virtual PC v6 on a 12" Powerbook 1.33ghz etc so mine
will not be a direct comparison to your setup. I have win 2000 and I
use primarily business software, (Autocad 2000) and it works actually
pretty good. I can't imagine it on a slower setup. If you need the odd
PC program and can live with it being a bit slower (depends on what you
want to run) it may work out alright. VPC is supposed to be around
20-25% faster than previous versions and from what I have seen
(comparing to a 1ghz iBook with VPC 5 it is significantly faster. I
bought the Powerbook to replace a PC portable that died and so far it
has been great. Max the ram in your computer and stay away from XP as
they really need a lot of ram etc to run. Win98SE runs maybe a touch
faster than win 2000 but either one is good.

There are a number of wireless USB printer servers available in the $50-$100
range and what they lack in Mac friendliness and documentation they can make
up for in price. After my original base station died this winter I did some
research and finally decided to buy another from Apple for three reasons:

1) it integrated the USB printer server with the base station and that made
it about $40 more expensive than the other stations/servers I was looking at

2) Apple's software which makes setting it up a breeze - but to be honest it
isn't hard to set up a D-Link or any other station. They use a web browser
rather than a friendly Mac program

3) firmware issues - oftentimes companies just don't get around to issuing
firmware upgrades that don't require a PC. Sure, I have a PC at home but the
less I have to use it the happier I am, and I really prefer keeping it
segregated from the internet.

When you buy be sure to do your research. There are some printers that
cannot be served and some that can be served in the PC world but not the
Mac.
