Oh, and one more thing.. If I have OS X 10.3.4 Panther, will apple let
me update to OS X 10.4.1 Tiger for free? Or will I have to buy that
version? ~Joshua Braddock~

So, with each version release, like 10.1 to 10.2 cost money? why didnt
they do like what they did with classic os's and do 8.1 costs, but
8.2-8.4 doesnt, 8.5 does, 8.6-8.9 doesnt? lol i dont under stand that..
so 10.1.1-x is free, but 10.1 to 10.2 isnt. and 10.2 to 10.3 isnt, and

Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-17 Thread Hal
It's called residual revenue.
Apple, like any company that is only going to sell you a major product
every few years, needs to insure that they can make money on a regular
basis. It's the same reason Microsoft updates Office every 2 years and
makes just enough changes that if one person in your office gets the
new version, everyone has to upgrade...

Seriously though, I've been impressed enough with the last 2 versions
to pay retail for them... 10.2 and 10.3 have been pretty major
upgrades. I hope 10.4 is as good.

Just my $0.02.

If they stuck to the original numbering scheme, I guess Jaguar would be
10.5, Panther 11.0, and Tiger 11.5. I believe this more accurately
reflect the differences between systems. However, this would introduce
the problem with the Mac OS X moniker. (I still don't know where
Apple will go with this one.)

Coincidentally, for a short while Apple's Public Relations website had
a picture of a Panther CD with a Mac OS X Version 11 label. This was
quickly changed to one with Mac OS X Version 10.3.

Airport Extreme - Just checking

I am thinking of moving from Airport to Airport Extreme. I have:

TiBook 500
iMac G3 400 Graphite SE

I thought I had remembered some advice here that some older Macs like
mine may not support the Extreme cards. Is that correct?

If not regular delete, try secure delete.
If not, try moving it to /tmp which is (I think) automatically cleaned

I think the experts here need a little more info. In your earlier post you
said you have an iBook. Is that a brand new, current model or an older,
refurbished or used model? If new, that iBook will not boot in OS 9, and
neither would the CD.

If an older model iBook, what particular model is it? Also describe the CD
you are talking about. Is it an Apple OS CD or is it a copy? If it is an
Apple CD, is it an Install or a Restore CD? I think some restore CDs
will not boot in OS 9, even on an OS 9 bootable machine. They boot in OS X
and the OS 9 System Folder gets installed from there.

Good Luck,

Yes. Apple's AirPort cards have proprietary connectors. In fact, the
connectors between Apple's own AirPort cards and AirPort Extreme cards
are different! Even though you cannot take advantage of AirPort Extreme
on your TiBook, you can still get 802.11g via 3rd-party PC Cards. The
nice thing with the PC Cards is that you will almost certaily get much
better reception and signal strength than the built-in antennas.

I had to comment on this one. . .this reminded me of the one thing
Apple has done over the years that truly is a slap to loyal Mac users.
Anyone look in their box for X? Or 9 for that matter? See those
upgrade coupons? Wonder what they are for? Basically nothing. .
.it's things like this that make me shrug whenever Steve Jobs announces
a new version of Mac OS, because I know that it's gonna take a small
chunk out of my wallet. I strongly feel that Apple should have just
waited at least until the new Windose OS comes out. . .ya' know, the
one that's going to put PC users what we Mac users went through.
Jumping from 9 to X wasn't easy. I didn't do it until the last release
of Jaguar was introduced to the market. I my opinion, Apple should sit
back on the software side, and focus on it's users, it's newest
hardware ( the new cinema displays are enough of a distraction alone),
and try to make sure everyone is happy with Jaguar and Panther BEFORE
they even talk about Tiger. I watched the recording of Jobs in San
Francisco. As far as I'm concerned, Tiger wasn't originally planned to
even be mentioned until late next year. What was most likely planned
was for Steve to introduce the new iMac G5 line. . which everyone knows
Apple dropped the ball on. Of course, we Mac users know it wasn't
Apple, but IBM for not being able to develop a better cooling system to
work in the tight quarters within an iMac. But now I'm getting into a
tangent aren't I? :)

Just noticed something rather odd. I've got the Pismo, which is
supposed to have the swappable expansion bays. I tried the Apple Tech

I pop out the CD/DVD drive, believe it or not, OS X Panther CRASHES!
Any ideas? It's getting old. . .sometimes I'm in the need for my other
battery, or my zip drive module, or vise versa. I pop it out, and BAM.
. .all over again. Any help would be. . .er. . .helpful.

Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-17 Thread Adam Thayer
This is precisely why, actually. Steve Jobs said that MacOS X would
'last us' through the decade at least, which is why it has been 10.x.x
for 5 years now. Another way to look at it is this:

MacOS x.y.z
x - Major Version Number - Represents a whole new core for the OS.
y - Minor Version Number - Represents new features that are added to
the OS.
z - Patch Version Number - Represents tuning and other enhancements
that don't add features.

Granted this only works for versions since 10.0.0, but once you get
used to it, it makes as much sense as Apple's system before.
